Spring officially arrives with the March equinox
(March 20th) and has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth and new beginnings. The flowers burst forth in full bloom – trees show off their new growth. Warm, sunny days coax us to go outside and enjoy more time in the great outdoors. Spring in Las Vegas is one of the best times to enjoy activities such as walking, biking, jogging/running and, of course, spending time walking and playing with our pets. Even indoor pets appreciate the fresh air of an open window and can enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of spring. There are many pet events happening in March and April. Visit our website at www.lvpetscene.com and ‘like us’ on facebook (facebook.com/lasvegaspetscene) to keep up to date on pet events happening in Las Vegas. Southern Nevada BARK Rangers By Kimberly Reinhart and Paula Jacoby-Garrett
Each spring the National Park Service celebrates America’s treasures during National Park Week, which is scheduled for April 16 to 24, 2022. You might assume only humans are invited to this party, but you’d be wrong! In 2016, the Olympic National Park in Washington introduced the BARK Ranger Program, which quickly grew in popularity and is now offered at nearly fifty parks across the United States. Fortunately for Southern Nevadans, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area participates in the On Bea’s first trip to Lake Mead, program and offers many dog she became a BARK Ranger. friendly trails and beaches for us to explore with our four-legged friends. What is the BARK Ranger Program? The BARK Ranger Program is designed to help preserve the delicate ecosystems of the national parks. BARK is an acronym for: Bag your pet’s waste. Always leash your pet. Respect wildlife. Know where you can go. To join the program at Lake Mead, visit a Park Ranger at the Alan Bible Visitor Center (702-293-8990; 10 Lakeshore Road, Boulder City) and complete the BARK Ranger pledge. You will have the option to purchase an official Always keeping your pet on a leash is key BARK Ranger tag for your to the BARK Ranger Program. A leash dog to show off. Each park could be what keeps your pet safe and by has their own tag, so you can your side when and if you are fortunate collect these as you travel and enough to see wildlife while hiking. explore.
Willow, Lammy, and Pepper recommend these beaches.
➠
If you are in the mood for a beach, the National Park Service suggests taking your dog to the following beaches: Special Events Beach, Kayak & Canoe Beach, PWC Beach, North Arizona Telephone Cove, Princess Cove, and Cabinsite Cove.
If you are in the mood for a hike, dog-friendly trails include the Historic Railroad Trail, Owl Canyon, Bluffs Trail, Redstone, and more. The Historic Railroad Trail is extremely popular due to the flat terrain and sweeping views of the Lake. In Spring, Owl Canyon is a great option because the walls of the canyon provide shade, keeping you and your pup from getting too warm. On the first day of National Park Week, April 16th, park entrance fees ($25 per car) are waived. If you have been waiting for an excuse to explore the park in our backyard, now is the time to go!
Piper, a Bernadoodle, enjoys an early morning hike with her family Braelyn, Brynn, and Brooke.
OWL CANYON TRAIL
(2.25 mile round trip hike) The Owl Canyon Trailhead is located along Lakeshore Drive in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. From Las Vegas, drive to the Las Vegas Wash entrance station, then south and east to 33 Hole Road (there is a sign and turn off from Lakeshore Drive). The trailhead is on the left side of the parking lot by the picnic tables.
One of the most accessible slot canyons from Las Vegas, Owl Canyon is fun to explore on a nice spring day, as Tilly and Madilyn do here.
From the trailhead sign, the trail immediately leads down from the parking lot, across a flat area, up a small ridge and into an open area. Multiple trails lead to the left, which is back toward Lakeshore Road and up the drainage toward Owl Canyon. Follow the most obvious path and after about 0.25-mile, you and your furry friend will enter the first of the narrow canyons. Tall walls of conglomerate rock form the slot canyon and have created interesting shapes and textures. Watch for white markings on the walls which are the signs that Barn Owl once roosted above. The trail will pass through two sets of culverts under Lakeshore Road and the River Mountains Loop Trail. After the second culvert crossing, the canyon opens to a wide wash. Share a snack with your trail companion and return the way you came.

THE NEWS
SPAIN PASSES NEW LAW: AS OF JANUARY 5, 2022 PETS WILL BE RECOGNIZED AS LEGAL FAMILY MEMBERS Spain is not the first country to pass a law recognizing pets as sentient beings rather than property; hopefully though it is not the last country to do so. In recent years several countries such as France, New Zealand, Slovakia, Portugal, Germany, Austria and Switzerland have passed similar laws. Spain’s new law considers the welfare and feelings of pets in a breakup or split allowing for shared custody and visitation rights. The basis for the law is that animals are sentient beings with emotions. Rather than having to prove pet ownership the law provides for the welfare of pets much like the welfare and needs of children in separation or divorce cases. Pet parents already consider pets as part of their family. Fortunately, this law is part of a growing trend of governments to treat pets as family members instead of possessions to be divided in divorce or separation settlements.

Spring is in the air! WAYS FOR CATS TO ENJOY THE OUTDOORS
T
he days are longer with plenty of sunshine. Cats love to lounge and bask in the sun. Perhaps it’s the internal call of the wild but even indoor cats yearn to fully experience the sights, sounds and scents of the outdoors. The earth is waking up and it affects cats. They’re being stimulated with lots of sensory input. It is feline spring fever; they’re restless and spend more time looking out the window. During the winter my cat ignored his cat tower and I wondered if he lost interest in it. Lately though he has been spending lots of time on the top perch looking longingly outside. I notice his head moves slightly as he watches the little birds in the bushes right outside the window. Is he aware of the world outside his safe home? I love the outdoors and my cat often sits by a window and watches me and yes, I feel guilty.
concern. Never leave them alone outside.
How can we help our cats enjoy and benefit from the outdoors during the marvelous Las Vegas spring weather? One simple way is to bring the outdoors inside. You can place a cat tower, or a window shelf or perch in front of a window with a great view of the outdoors. Opening the window provides fresh air and maybe a chance to hear birds singing. For many cats this will satisfy their need for the sights, sounds and scents of the outdoors. However, for some it is not enough. Many feline experts feel that whenever possible cats should be offered safe access to the outdoors. Supervised and safe outdoor experiences provide mental and physical stimulation for cats; they benefit by being in contact with the earth. Fortunately, there are many ways to do this.
An outdoor enclosure or catio (cat patio) is a very popular option. These structures provide safe and secure ways for cats to enjoy the outdoors. They can be stand-alone enclosures or screened-in porches or balconies. You can go as simple or sophisticated as you like; you can purchase a premade one, hire a contractor or go the do-it-yourself route. The plans and styles are limitless. On Pinterest I saw quite a few DIY catios using PVC pipe. Some were very simple and looked like they would be easy to do. There are also cat cages made with metal wire frames which are easily moved to different areas of your yard or patio. They are fairly inexpensive and might be a good first step to creating an outdoor environment for your cat. Creating an outdoor environment is an ongoing project. Cats get bored very quickly so adding towers, platforms, perches, and plants provides variety and opportunities to climb, view their kingdom and safely experience the great outdoors.
First, and most importantly, honor your cat’s temperament. The outdoors can be too stressful for many cats. Taking a cat for walks with a harness and leash is becoming very popular. Let them get accustomed to wearing a harness in the security of their home. Safety is always the number one
Pet Strollers are great for taking longer walks with your cat. They get to enjoy the benefits of the outdoors and offers a convenient way to take cats to outdoor events or walking with dog-walking friends. Pet tents and portable pet playpens are easily set up and are good transitional options to determine if your cat would enjoy a more permanent outdoor enclosure.
Enjoy the great outdoors with your feline friend this spring – you’ll both appreciate these special times of togetherness. Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • March/April 2022

SNIFF ALL THE THINGS.
Spring is here and as the winter chill leaves the air, that’s the thought on every dog’s mind. Nature is medicine, and while your dog may not suffer from the same stressors as you (traffic, mortgage payments, and a less than wonderful boss), Fido has stress too. Being indoors can wreak havoc on his physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It’s up to you as doggy parent to provide fresh air and exercise to keep him happy and healthy.
With such beautiful trails here in Las Vegas, there’s no better way to give your pup the outing they deserve, than a hike out in nature. • By Sheryl Green
WHY DOGS NEED TO HIKE
PREPPING FOR YOUR HIKE
There are a number of reasons why you should leash up your four-legged best friend and head out for a hike.
While hiking is a beautiful way to spend the day, and has countless health benefits for both your dog and you, there are some dangers associated with the great outdoors. Before you plan your first excursion, there are a few tasks to take care of.
1 2 3 4
A slim dog is a health dog. While a roly-poly pooch may look cute, pet obesity is dangerous for your furry family member. Extra weight can impact your dog’s joints and skeletal system, causing osteoarthritis and intervertebral disc disease, and can cause diabetes, heart failure, and many other weight-related conditions. Since pets spend most of their day lounging on the couch, a good hike can strengthen your pup and help them stay healthier and live longer. Your home stinks. Don’t take that wrong. You may keep your house fresh and clean, but there are a variety of toxins released from your carpets, upholstery, and the cleaning products you use, that can cause breathing problems for your fur baby. Having plenty of (pet-safe) plants in your home can help, but getting your dog outside for a regular hike, will give them the opportunity to breathe easy. Your dog doesn’t watch Netflix. Sure, you love to binge on Downtown Abby, but your pup is likely sleeping away the day. He is bored and needs stimulation that can best be found running around in nature, sniffing all the things (and then peeing on them), and meeting new canine friends along the way. Your dog is an animal and he was meant to spend time in nature. The Earth has a magnetic current that does a body good (yours too) and dogs need time to roll around in the grass or dirt to clear the impact of the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) they are exposed to being in the house all day.
1 2 3
Microchip your pup and pick out a snug collar with ID tags. Why do you need both? Because collars can get snagged and leave your dog running around in his birthday suit. If your pooch is ever lost, a microchip will ensure that if found, he’ll find his way home to you. Know the terrain. If you’ll be enjoying a hike on a rough surface, you may want to invest in some dog booties to protect Fido’s paw pads. Know the potential threats. Will you be hiking in areas with rattlesnakes or other wildlife that could potentially harm your dog? Is there poisonous flora you need to keep them away?
Your pup will love spending time in nature. He’ll enjoy the sights, the smells, the activity, and most importantly… his time spent with you.

Rabbits also do not require daily walks which makes them ideal for people whose lifestyles do not adapt for those activities. Rabbits, however, are often referred to as small pets with “large pet” requirements. AVOID MAKING AN IMPULSIVE DECISION [ DO YOUR RESEARCH.
For starters here are a few important issues to consider.
Little bunnies are so cute and cuddly. Unfortunately, that little bundle of fur quickly grows into an adult pet with full-sized needs. They have a lifespan from approximately 7 to 10 years. Having a rabbit as a pet is a long-term commitment. Their cage must be large enough for hopping and exercising. Rabbits should not be left in their cages for long periods of time. It is recommended that they spend a few hours every day outside their cages.
THESE ARE EASTER GIFTS.
BUNNY-PROOFING YOUR HOME It is important to provide an area large enough for them to safely roam, explore and get exercise. They love to chew and can gnaw on furniture and other wood items. They also seem to be drawn to power cords. As with all pets, rabbits require socialization and enrichment activities for stimulation and to prevent boredom. Companion rabbits are great pets for people who understand their needs and are willing to provide a place in their hearts and homes for a pet rabbit. Unfortunately, rabbits are the third most relinquished pet in shelters across the United States. Many more are just abandoned. If after doing your research you feel that a rabbit is the ideal pet for you, please adopt from a shelter or rescue.

DOG BLOAT SYMPTOMS PREVENTION TIPS
BY ELIZABETH RACINE, DVM
Gastric dilation and volvulus – more commonly known as bloat – is one of the most serious medical emergencies veterinarians encounter. Bloat is a life-threatening condition that occurs most commonly in large and giant breed dogs. If your dog is a breed at risk for bloat, make sure you are able to identify the common risks and symptoms of this condition, so you can seek medical care right away if your dog should ever develop it. WHAT IS BLOAT?
Bloat is the common name for a medical condition called gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV). GDV is an emergency condition that occurs when the stomach fills with gas and then twists upon itself, cutting off circulation and increasing the pressure inside the stomach. Gas and fluid continue to build up in the stomach and cut off blood flow, creating an emergency situation that must be addressed quickly.
WHAT CAUSES BLOAT IN DOGS?
We don’t know exactly why some dogs develop GDV while others don’t, but there are several risk factors that can make a dog more prone to developing GDV. Risk factors for bloat in dogs include: » Having first-degree relatives that have a history of GDV » Deep-chested conformation » Lean body condition » Advancing age » Eating quickly » Eating from a raised food bowl » Eating only dry food, especially in a single large meal » Having a fearful or nervous temperament » Exercising after eating a large meal or drinking a lot of water If your dog displays some of all of these risk factors, it’s especially important to familiarize yourself with the symptoms of GDV so you can intervene quickly should your dog ever develop bloat.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BLOAT IN DOGS? Bloat is an emergency situation, so if you notice these signs in your dog, seek veterinary care right away. Common symptoms of bloat include: » » » » » » » » » » »
Retching Excessive salivation Abdominal pain Distended abdomen Restlessness Weakness Collapse Pale mucous membranes Fast breathing and heart rate Difficult or labored breathing Sudden death
HOW IS BLOAT DIAGNOSED AND TREATED? Your veterinarian will initially diagnose bloat based on a physical examination. Your vet will then quickly stabilize your dog by starting him or her on intravenous (IV) fluids and decompressing the stomach to alleviate pressure and restore blood flow. Once your dog is stable, your veterinarian can then perform additional diagnostic testing such as taking radiographs (x-rays) of the stomach to confirm the presence of dilation and volvulus. Your veterinarian may also recommend additional diagnostic testing such as blood work.
Unfortunately, the only treatment for GDV is surgery. Your veterinarian will untwist the stomach and return in to its proper position. Your vet will also perform a procedure called a gastropexy, in which the stomach is tacked to the abdominal wall to prevent it from rotating again. Following the procedure, your dog will need to be hospitalized for IV fluids and close monitoring. Your dog will also be treated with antibiotics, antiemetics, and pain control medications.
CAN BLOAT BE PREVENTED? The good news is that bloat can be prevented in at-risk breeds. Breeds such as the Great Dane, German Shepherd, Standard Poodle, and Doberman Pinscher are more commonly affected by GDV. In these and other at-risk dogs, a prophylactic gastropexy may be performed to tack the stomach to the abdominal wall and prevent volvulus from occurring. This procedure is often performed at the time of spay or neuter, or it can be performed as a separate procedure. Having a prophylactic gastropexy performed greatly reduces the risk of developing GDV.
BLOAT IN DOGS IS MORE THAN AN UPSET TUMMY!
Despite its innocuous-sounding name, bloat is a serious and life-threatening medical condition in dogs. If your dog shows signs of bloat, seek veterinary care right away. By knowing the signs and symptoms of GDV, you’ll be able to act quickly should your dog develop this condition – saving valuable time that could save your dog’s life. 20

NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK March 20 - 26, 2022
T
By Gail Mayhugh
Awareness is the key to prevention!
he week is an opportunity to highlight the dangers of poisoning. So, as you start your spring cleaning, take extra time to check around your house, garage, and yard for anything that might be poisonous to you, the little ones that visit, and your pets.
IT'S CLEANING TIME
With all the products on the market to make cleaning easier, many can be toxic. Watch the spray foam cleaners. That pretty blue water most likely contains toxic substances and bleach. You might do a quick spray and walk away to let it work for a few minutes, but that's all it takes for a lick or two. One lick may not affect your pup but make your friend's kitty extremely sick. Fabric softener sheets make everything feel so nice, but their chemicals can cause kidney failure if ingested. Not everyone folds wash right out of the dryer, and I hate to admit that I don't. So, you have to watch that Fido doesn’t go into the laundry basket and steal the softener sheet. You may want to skip using liquid fabric softener when washing their bedding, as many contain the same harmful chemicals. Other items making cleaning easier are soap gel packs for your laundry and dishwashers. The anionic mixtures in them can be toxic, and they're small enough to be snatched if dropped.
LET'S GO OUTSIDE
We all know there are many toxic and life-threatening plants outside. I knew about oleanders and poinsettias, but I didn't realize how poisonous vinca, tulips, daisies, and lilies are. Not that my kids are flower trimmers, but I'm not taking the chance if they decide to take a nibble one day. So, what else do you have in your backyard? How about pesticides, lawn, and pool chemicals? I'm sure you're not leaving them out and around the yard but be careful when you have the shed door open. Pets are curious and often can't resist smelling, tasting, and sometimes swallowing items that interest them. 22
Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • March/April 2022
WHAT'S INSIDE YOUR HOME?
You might not even think about your remote controls or phones, but some dogs love to chew, and batteries, if ingested, can cause severe chemical burns. Did you know that Teflon-coated cookware can produce highly toxic fumes which kill birds? Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems, and this is just one of many cooking items to watch out for. As well as aerosol sprays, ammonia, and oven cleaners, to name just a few. Be aware of cigarettes, change, vitamins, prescription drugs, sugarless chewing gums, mints with xylitol, and chocolate. Your pets can quickly get to your night stands from the bed, and Fluffy may like to jump up on your counter. In the end, never assume your pet will know the difference between things that are toxic and nontoxic. When you welcome a new pet into your home, make sure to research what can make them seriously ill or be fatal. Kitty loves her milk but it’s dangerous for a ferret. Ninety percent of poisonings occur in the home. What is safe for us isn't always safe for pets. If you think your pet has ingested something poisonous, seek veterinary attention immediately. There are 24-hour emergency clinics. Find out which one is closest to you now, so in the event of an unfortunate situation, you can jump in the car and go immediately. You can also call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680. Both are available 24 hours a day. 30TH ANNUAL LVMPD K-9 TRIALS
at South Point Arena March 20, 2022
T
he Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department K-9 Section will host the 30th Annual LVMPD K-9 Trials on March 20, 2022, at South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Teams from all over the country will join the LVMPD K-9 Section in competitions for Narcotics, Bombs, Area Search, Building Search, Obedience, Agility, and Handler Protection. German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, Belgian Malinois’, Labradors, and English Springer Spaniels will compete in the seven different categories. Additionally, the top three finishers will receive Tough Dog, Top Dog, and Top Agency awards. Teams include police K-9 units and hotel security teams and are judged on many facets of their performance including the handler’s tactics. “Most people have seen a demonstration at one time or another showing how the patrol dogs chase down suspects,’ says Lt. Jeff Clark of the LVMPD K-9 Section. “You will see that, but it’s a tiny portion of what they do. The police dog of today is like its human counterpart, professional and highly trained, and everyone who comes to the Trials will truly see that.” Lt. Clark will serve as show emcee along with Beth Fisher, the former news anchor who now handles Community Relations for the LVMPD Public Information Office. And in addition to all the breathtaking and dangerous K-9 contests, SWAT will kick it up a notch with a demonstration during half-time.

Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • March/April 2022
The Trials will be held at the Arena at South Point Hotel & Casino this year. “We are very excited to be at a new location accustomed to having animals. It makes a real difference,” adds Clark. LVMPD has one of the oldest, continuously operating K-9 units in the United States. This year, it celebrates the fifty-seventh year of the unit that began with the City of Las Vegas Police Department in 1961, organized by Sergeant Harold Miller. The LVMPD K-9 Section includes 14 Officers, three Sergeants, and one Lieutenant. There are 17 Patrol Dogs, five Narcotic Detector Dogs, and five Explosive Detector Dogs. Five Patrol Dogs are also certified as Human Remains Detectors. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation is producing the event. The nonprofit organization supports and supplements Metro area commands, special units like the K-9 section, equipment & technology, crime prevention events, and hundreds of positive community-police engagement activities, programs, and initiatives that help make Las Vegas safer for all.
General Admission tickets to the LVMPD K-9 Trials are available for FREE, but you must register online: lvmpdfoundation.org/k9trials

URICIDE SOLVES PET ODOR PROBLEMS WITH AMAZING NEW TECHNOLOGY ®
URICIDE® of California has developed a powerful, living bacteria product that is 100% guaranteed to remove pet odors on all surfaces. “Most odor elimination products are enzyme based, and can only eliminate part of the odor problem,” says URICIDE® Manager Jeff Thompson “These inferior products are more susceptible to the elements and will deteriorate quickly from heat, humidity, and certain surface conditions. Once an enzyme is sprayed and its life cycle has started, it will only be productive for several minutes up to a few days. When this happens, the odor comes back after only a day or two. URICIDE® transcends the traditional way of removing odors with remarkable new technology. The company’s
innovative formulas use potent strains of living bacteria to consume organic waste matter, break down solids, eliminate harmful bacteria and neutralize harsh smells. “Enzyme-only products break down complex waste, but not simple waste,” explains Thompson. “URICIDE® uses a two-step process, in which the complex waste gets broken down first, then the bacteria go to work, breaking down the simple waste. This extra step (which most odor products are missing) is what makes URICIDE such a superior product.” “The inclusion of live bacteria in URICIDE® means less product is needed per application and the results will last much longer than your typical enzymebased odor eliminator.”
About
URICIDE® URICIDE® odor elimination products have restored harmony to the homes of pet owners across the USA and other countries abroad. From office cleaning solutions to veterinary treatment room sanitation to odor removal on artificial turf surfaces, URICIDE® has you covered. While other companies attempt to tackle similar issues with the use of harsh and toxic chemicals, URICIDE® remains committed to solving common cleaning and sanitation problems by harnessing the latent forces of Mother Nature. With escalating concern over man-made environmental issues, the last thing the planet needs is for consumers to add millions of gallons of toxic waste into water systems each year. At URICIDE®, our technicians have developed potent cleaning, sanitation and odor removal products that are all 100% biodegradable and environmentally safe. All URICIDE® products are proudly made in the USA, providing you with eco-friendly solutions you can depend on. To learn more about URICIDE®, please visit us at www.URICIDE.com.

VETERINARY PROFESSIONALS IN DEMAND Explore the Opportunities
H
ave you tried to make an appointment with your veterinarian lately? If so, you are undoubtedly aware that many vet offices are booking appointments 3-6 weeks out, if not longer. Unfortunately, this is currently a nationwide dilemma. Veterinarians and veterinary technicians are in short supply right now and it’s creating an incredible hardship for pet owners and their pets. The shortage of veterinary services is due to a combination of circumstances including many that are a direct result of the COVID pandemic. During the pandemic’s earliest months, pet adoptions soared. According to an ASPCA survey released in May 2021, 90% of dogs and 85% of cats adopted during that time were kept by their owners. This greatly increased the need for veterinary services on an already stressed and understaffed workforce. In addition, veterinary offices were faced with the extra duties of thoroughly sanitizing examination rooms and all surfaces throughout their clinics. Arranging and providing curbside pickups again added to their workload and took time away from their ultimate job of caring for pets. Since vet offices were considered an essential service, they remained open but could primarily only deal with pet emergencies. Routine procedures like spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and follow-ups were postponed out of necessity, which only backlogged their appointments. This is one of the reasons it is so difficult to a get an appointment now. Currently, Las Vegas, Henderson, and the valley have about 205 veterinary facilities to serve roughly 1 million animals. This staggering number helps explain why so many vets and vet techs have either retired or left the field entirely in search of other employment. The long hours, the workload, and the stress of the job has taken its toll on many in the veterinary field. If you have ever considered getting into veterinary medicine, now is the perfect time to pursue your interests. Vet & vet tech jobs are expected to grow 17% between 2020-2030, which is much faster than the average of other occupations. The need for more veterinarians, vet techs, and veterinary assistants is a nationwide problem. Adding to the veterinary workforce will be essential to the recovery of our animal care services. 32
Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • March/April 2022
Understandably, becoming a veterinarian involves a significant amount of education, but is an achievable goal for many people. It requires four years of college, followed by a 4-year program in an accredited veterinary school. Since there are only 32 veterinary schools in the nation (compared to over 150 medical schools), acceptance is extremely competitive. Of all the careers in the veterinary field, becoming a veterinarian requires the most education. Still within the veterinary sciences, a career that requires less formal education is a vet tech. Vet techs assist with the administration of medications, vaccines, and treatments. They additionally help with preparing animals and instruments for surgery, collecting/documenting animal case histories, and restraining animals for examination or treatment. To become a vet tech, you will need to complete a vet tech program (usually obtaining a 2-year associates degree) and pass a state certification exam. As a final step, you will need to obtain a vet tech license before securing employment. For those who would like to enter the veterinary field more quickly, working as a veterinary assistant may be a good first step. It requires less training time and is considered an entrylevel job in animal care. It is a role that enables individuals to determine whether they want to further their education in the field. Veterinary assistance programs can be completed in as few as 9 months. Typical responsibilities of a veterinary assistant include: Feeding, grooming and weighing animals, cleaning cages and bathing animals, sterilizing equipment and soothing upset or frightened animals. All of these positions are in high demand right now. The position you choose to pursue depends on the kind of animal care you want to provide and the amount of education you are willing to complete.

RESEARCH Your Breed By Elizabeth Parker
SHOULD I OR SHOULDN’T I? That is a question many of us ask ourselves when trying to decide if we can adopt a new pup into our homes. We already know our hearts say yes... but have we thought about all of the responsibilities that go along with adopting a new pup? More importantly, have we determined if the breed we intend on adopting fits our lifestyle and/or the lifestyle of our family?
I
t may seem like a silly question, right? We know we love dogs. We know that pup is adorable...but we also have to realize that each breed has some unique characteristics that set them apart from the others. If we don’t have experience with their traits and quirks, or think it might be too much to handle, it may not actually be a good fit! One way to help prevent failure or disaster is to do a little research before signing those papers! This doesn’t mean you don’t want to help, and it doesn’t mean you don’t care. It simply means you want to provide the best home possible for these animals in need, and you want them to thrive in their environment! They need to be a good match for your training experience and ability. Their activity level is also something to take into consideration. Some breeds are quite content as a couch potato watching hours of television with their families, however, for other breeds, that same scenario will drive them to the point of insanity... and they will take their owners along for the ride. The next thing to consider is the size of the breed, as large dogs – friendly or not – are more difficult to manage than a three pound dog of a similar personality. Even the friendliest of large dogs can be extremely powerful and if not trained accordingly, the result is an unhappy dog owner and an unhappy dog. While it might not appear important at first, each breed has a different type of fur, which means that some will shed and require more daily maintenance than others. This can easily add up to a few hours per week on grooming alone. As an example, one breed for which I’ve become quite familiar is the golden retriever. This is the breed with the award-winning smile and beautiful, golden coat. It’s also a breed that requires a bit of maintenance. Not only do they need to exercise daily but as affectionate dogs, a simple pat on their head won’t suffice. They thrive on attention. In addition, many goldens don’t realize that they’ve 36
Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • March/April 2022
grown up – even as they reach their senior years – and, though they are gentle giants, they fail to realize their own strength. A golden retriever can easily knock down an adult human, even if their only intent was to play. Don’t let their gentle demeanor fool you, my current golden got scared during a thunderstorm and dragged a 400 pound elliptical machine (that was sitting atop an area rug) half way across the room! As their name suggests, they enjoy retrieving things—including items that their owners might consider off limits. In fact, those are the items that are most enticing to a golden. Lastly, it’s necessary to provide frequent grooming and still, they shed a lot. If a pristine house is in your plans, the energetic and playful golden retriever might not be the breed for you. This is only one example, but each breed is known for having their own wants and needs. I’ve never owned a husky, but have spoken to those who are familiar with the breed and they have stated that before adopting one, husky experience is absolutely necessary! If you plan to exercise with your pooch, then you might not want a dog that is known for being lazy, and if you love to relax, then you’ll want a dog who enjoys doing the same. It’s important to research their typical personalities and temperament, size, and grooming necessities to help determine if this breed will be a good fit with your family. There is nothing in the world like the love and companionship of a dog. Their loyalty is unsurpassed and once you find the right dog, you’ll be happy you did the research first... and so will your new addition!

Preparing Your
PETS for the Arrival of a New
BABY
By Kelley Bollen, MS, CABC • Certified Animal Behavior Consultant • Principal Consultant – Kelley Bollen Consulting, LLC
I
f you have a dog or a cat that is currently your “baby” but you are now expecting a human baby, it’s important to prepare your furry kid(s) for what is about to happen in their lives. A new baby in the house changes so many things for your pets - from walking schedules to sleeping arrangements. You really do need to prepare them for what’s to come. The best thing to do is to start preparing your pets a few months before the little bundle of joy comes into the scene. It might take them that long to get accustomed to all the sights, sounds and smells that will be new in the house. The first thing to consider are all the smells that come with a baby because for dogs and cats, their sense of smell is their most important and powerful sense. To accustom your pets to baby smells, purchase some of the products that you will need for your baby (lotion, powder, baby oil, baby wipes) and start to use them on yourselves so that your pet becomes familiar with the new scents. You should also consider all of the sounds that come with a baby - the crying, screaming, gurgling, and laughter of a baby. They actually make CDs of baby sounds (available online). Playing the CD will accustom your pets to the baby sounds that they will experience. Bring in some of the new items that will be added to the house for the baby. Set up the nursery complete with a crib, changing table, playpen, and rocking chair so that they get used to seeing these new pieces of furniture. If you are going to banish your pets from the nursery once the baby is here, let them investigate the items for a few days and then put up a baby gate on the door to the nursery so that they learn ahead of time that this is an off-limit area. 42
Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • March/April 2022
The most valuable item that you should purchase is a baby doll. Find a life-sized baby doll and start to carry it around, sit with it in your lap, change its diaper, give it a bath, and put the lotion and powder and on it. Basically, you want to act like this is your new baby so that your pet gets used to seeing you interact with something the way you will interact with your baby. This part might seem a bit creepy to you but it is probably the most valuable thing you can do to prepare your pets for their new human sister or brother. The better you prepare your pets for the major change in all of your lives, the better they will accept this new little human. Once you have done all of these things, the only new item in the house will be the actual living, breathing infant. When you bring the baby home from the hospital have mom go into the house first to greet the pets who will be excited to see her after the few days absence. Dad can carry the new baby inside behind mom. Your pets will be interested in smelling the baby, which you can let them do safely. If your dog tends to get overly excited in greeting or is a jumper - make sure the he is on a tether so that he doesn’t jump up on the baby. Be very careful not to punish your pets for being interested in the baby. If your dog jumps up to see the infant and you yell at him for jumping, you will have just formed a negative association - baby on scene means getting yelled at. That’s why it’s so important to control the dog with a leash or tether at first. The pets should be praised and even given a special treat when they first meet the baby so that a positive association is formed. With all of this great preparation both you and your pets will be in good shape to welcome the newest member of your family into your home.

DOG BITE
PREVENTION WEEK April 10-16, 2022 BY C.A. RITZ
WATCH OUT! One day a little child skipped down her street to visit a kind elderly lady known for handing out freshly baked cookies. Through the woman’s wooden gate, up the stairs, and to the door was never an issue since that old woman delighted in company. The only obstacle that day to those yummy cookies was a fluffy noisy dog. Normally docile, the little dog chased the child away from the door, down the steps, and back through the gate which thankfully closed behind the girl. An even smaller child came along who did not heed warnings and stuck her hand through the fence toward the dog. NIP! That was a scene neither child would ever forget, nor the elderly lady who never handed out cookies again. I was one of those girls. We all know someone who’s been bitten. Obviously, you’d like to avoid this kind of situation, so what can be done?
AWARENESS Research reveals about 4.5 million people get bitten by dogs in the US every year. Some breeds of dogs have reputations for being dangerous, and a large dog can often be more threatening than a small one. Courts encounter many lawsuits yearly. The American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes the role dogs fill in families, but also acknowledges a potential danger. However, many animal bites can be prevented through awareness. So, how can you stay safe? Here are a few tips.
AS A PEDESTRIAN OR VISITOR
✘ ✘ Don’t awaken a sleeping dog ✘ Don’t take a dog’s toy or food ✘ Never walk between a mother dog Don’t startle a dog
and her puppies
✔ ✔ ✔
Watch for animal warning signs like:
→ A dog’s ears pulled back or eyes widened → Fur standing upward → A dog crouching, growling or barking
Keep your eyes to the owner, not the dog Keep your hands to self until given permission
AS A RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER ➠ DO NOT put your dog in unsupervised situations without you ➠ DO NOT put your dog in public scary situations, like firework displays ➠ PLEASE keep your dog leashed at public events
THE END OF THE STORY Children grow and memories fade. After overcoming more than one dog-related scary moment, a furry dog named Tiger came into our lives. With big brown eyes and a sweet temperament, he sat waiting in the middle of a pet store looking to adopt a family. Who would believe he’d been there three weeks without finding a home? Leaving the store, I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was meant to be our dog, so we went back! We’ll always be thankful for the training and love Tiger brought into our home. Dogs, if trained, and children if taught boundaries, can thrive together. Remember to do your part to keep yourself and others safe.

Batty is an easy going dog. He absolutely loves to lay with you and be with you and has a touch of separation anxiety. He barks when you leave but settles down quickly. He does posture and growl/bark at new dogs until he gets used to them (this takes a day). Batty is a real nice dog and even though he is a senior, he is in excellent shape now that his medical is done and he acts youthful. Y
Bonded brother Furrari and his sis Rolls Royce aka Rooibos are two VERY affectionate approx. 10 month old kittens looking for the purrfect home, together. They are fully vetted, microchipped, kitty friendly and kid friendly, too! These two love to snuggle with anyone that will hold them. They also love pet stroller rides around the neighborhood.Y
