A Resolution for July - Be Happy!

July – the beginning of the second half of 2017! The days, weeks, months go by so quickly. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we celebrated New Year’s and many of us made resolutions. Usually resolutions are about being better or doing more in the coming year. Resolutions, goals, and plans are extremely important in life. Sometimes, though, we might need a break from goal setting, planning and projects. What if the only item on our To Do List was: Be Happy? How can we be happy? A Harvard study known as the Happiness Study found that happiness is having good relationships. And for pet lovers, our relationships with our pets help keep us happy. Some of our pets are furry; some feathered; some with fins, and some scaly. They’re all unique and special to us. Let’s resolve to enjoy them and to appreciate the happiness they bring us.

Happiness is contagious –

if we enjoy our pets they’ll pick up on our happiness and be happier too!

Their goals are to recognize and honor assistance dogs; raise awareness and educate the public about how these specially trained animals help so many people; honor puppy raisers and trainers; and recognize deeds performed by assistance dogs in their communities. Assistance dogs serve as Guide Dogs, Service Dogs, Hearing Alert Dogs, Seizure Alert/ Response Dogs and Medical Alert/Response Dogs. They transform the lives of their human partners by mitigating their disability-related limitations and serve as their helper, companion, and best friend and close family member. IADW was established due to the efforts of Marcie Davis, a paraplegic for over 35 years. She is the author of Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook, and is the founder of Working Like Dogs.

As I’m writing this it is 115 degrees out, boy did these triple digits sneak up on us. We all like spending more time outdoors but we know that in Las Vegas we are challenged with our blistering heat. Even though our furry family members live primarily indoors, when we’re outside they want to be with us.

materials and surface selections need to be on the top of our list. Dogs especially love to chew and all plants are not compatible with dogs, and if ingested can cause serious health problems. Along with plants, we must look into what they are stepping on. Are there toxins that can be harmful when absorbed by their paws or when they lick them? Please take the time to visit the ASPCA Poison Control website for more information.

If you don’t have a pool or don’t want your pup in it, create their own water park. Instead of placing the kiddie pool on top of the grass, put it in the ground. Pick one that is shallow enough for your pet to easily get in and out of and a safe size for them. Also by putting in the ground it will keep them from chewing it up, dragging it around or through the doggie door as we’ve all seen on hilarious YouTube videos. You can surround it with pavers or even incorporate it into your pool design. Now, yes you will have to drain it, but there are simple siphons you can get at any home improvement store. There’s even cute pools shaped like bone bones that claim to be chew resistant. Consider a pondless fountain like a floor or planter fountain water feature. They’ll have fun trying to catch the water while you enjoy watching them and listening to the serene sound of the flowing water. Since Las Vegas is a water crisis area, don’t run it all day, just when you’re home so you and Fido can both enjoy it.

If your little or big one likes a chair of his or her own, take a thrift store Adirondack chair and cut the legs off to make it pet height. You can buy them specifically for pets or make it a DIY project and save money for those patio parties. Ottomans also make a great place for them to lay. If you have little ones, you can adjust the height by changing the legs.

If it’s hot on your feet, it’s hot for them also. Bring color 7 and pattern to your patio with an area rug. Buy one made for the outdoors or something inexpensive that will last a couple seasons. If you have artificial grass, remember it’s plastic and gets piping hot. We put up an automatic awning to cover it during the day. Yes, we already know we’re crazy puppy parents.

Protect your dog’s paws from the hot pavement by wearing dog booties. Note: dogs “perspire” through their paws – take breaks and remove boots periodically to prevent overheating.

Small Pool

A plastic kiddie pool or large tub might be a great option if your dog loves water. Many dogs love playing or lounging in the cool water.

CATS DON’T SWEAT! IS IT

Certainly cats possess a certain attitude or cattitude of appearing aloof and above mundane activities such as panting like a dog. While the dog is panting like crazy, the cat appears to be totally unaffected by the heat and leisurely grooming itself. Cats do have sweat glands. Like dogs they have sweat glands in their paws. When your cat is overheated or stressed it may leave a trail of wet pawprints on the floor. The small surface paw area, however, isn’t large enough to completely cool a cat. They’ve developed other ways to cope with heat. That “aloof , unaffected by the weather” grooming is one of the more efficient ways they have for cooling themselves. The evaporation of their salvia on their fur helps cool them off the same way the evaporation of sweat does for us. They also are less active; they seek out cool, shady spots for cat naps and don’t exert themselves enough to get overheated. Panting is a dog’s normal response to heat. It is a less common response in cat. If your cat is panting , it is important to watch for other signs of overheating or heat exhaustion. Help your cat maintain its Cool Catittude by providing water and cool places for naps and grooming.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS It is hard to believe that just like people, dogs and cats can acquire the same urinary complications as we do! By Dr. McDonagh, DVM - Town Center Animal Hospital Approximately 14% of dogs will acquire a UTI in their lifetime, most commonly occurring in young to middle aged females, whereas middle to older aged cats more frequently acquire UTIs.

What is involved with the urinary tract? Understanding the parts involved with the urinary system is important because your pet can display different clinical signs depending on where an infection is occurring in the body. The urinary tract consist of two kidneys where urine is produced, attaching each to a ureter connecting to the urinary bladder where urine is stored in the body. The urine then enters the urethra and leaves the body.

Where do UTIs occur? A UTI can occur in any part of the urinary system. Most commonly a bacterial infection starts on the outside of the body and ascends up into the bladder. Skin and external genital area have large amounts of bacteria residing on the outside of the body. If a pet has abnormal anatomic structures, or their normal immune defenses are down, the bacteria can migrate up the urinary tract and reside in the bladder, which is normally a sterile environment. If infection is left untreated, or your pet has other concurrent systemic conditions, bacteria can move up to the kidneys in which signs of lethargy, nausea and fever can occur, along with potential to develop secondary complications such as bladder stones, or blocking the urethra completely!

Common signs to look for with urinary bladder infections: • Urinating small amounts at a time • Posturing to urinate repeatedly • Urinating more frequently • Having accidents in the house • Drinking more water • Mucous/discharge before or after a pet urinates • Blood spots may be present in the urine and also urine can develop strong odor 20

Some pets show no symptoms at all! Annual labwork involving CBC/Chemistry and urinalysis are screening tests to rule out underlying systemic conditions and infections that can be missed at home.

Testing for urinary tract infections: The main test confirming a urinary tract infection is a urine culture. Since the bladder is normally a sterile environment, a urine culture consists of obtaining a urine sample directly from the bladder by a process known as cystocentesis. The sample is then grown in a specific environment and checked for bacterial growth. Having a urine culture also allows for correct antibiotic treatment of the infection. A urinalysis allows your veterinarian to evaluate further properties of urine such as the concentration, presence of protein, blood, inflammatory cells, glucose, and crystals. Urine sediment can give overall clues to your pet’s systemic health. It is important to understand that since pets with other systemic conditions such as metabolic abnormalities, kidney injury, and bladder stones, bloodwork along with advanced imaging may also be recommend by your veterinarian to allow for optimal care for your pet.

Treatment Urinary tract infections are routinely treated with appropriate antibiotics. Depending on the type of infection, antibiotic treatment can last for a minimum of 10-14 days, up to 21 days. Treatment for persistent UTIs can average 31-45 days. Once antibiotic treatment is finished a repeat urine culture is recommend to confirm there is no longer bacterial growth. Pending other properties of your pet’s urine, special urinary diets along with supplements are also available to aid in the overall health and comfort of your pet.

ets become such important members of our families that it is sometimes difficult to remember that they are still animals – creatures with innate survival responses that we need to respect. Unfortunately, children are extremely susceptible to triggering these potentially deadly responses if not supervised. Left alone or unsupervised with the family dog, a child runs the risk of injury or even death. In fact, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that half of all children 12 years-of-age and under have been bitten by a dog.* The majority of those bites were from a dog that the child was acquainted with – the family dog, a neighbor’s or a friend’s dog. Unfortunately, over 79% of all fatal dog attacks are on children and most commonly happen when a child is left unsupervised with a dog. Although deadly attacks like these are infrequent, they can and do occur. It does not take an overlyaggressive dog to inflict serious or deadly injuries. Even a gentle animal can bite if provoked. In most instances, it is simply a dog reacting instinctively to fear, confusion, or uncertainty. Dogs rely on their canine instincts to protect themselves and ensure their survival if they feel threatened. Unfortunately, it can be an instant response that does not allow them enough time to identify the attacker. Many dogs (and cats) are especially uneasy around children because they are inherently noisy, fastmoving, and very unpredictable. The combination of all 3 of these can easily heighten a pet’s alertness and readiness to protect itself. 22

By following a few simple guidelines, you can greatly reduce the risk of unforeseen attacks by a family pet. • Never leave a young child alone and unsupervised with an animal. • Never approach any animal while he or she is eating, sleeping, chewing on a toy, or caring for its young. • Always pet animals gently – with no pulling or tugging on their fur. • Don’t make loud noises or sudden moves when approaching any animal. • Do not touch the animal’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth or genitals. • Don’t let your child approach or touch a dog during times of heightened excitement. (Barking at someone at the door, eating, etc.)

Most importantly, teach your children that a pet is a living creature to be respected. No matter how much they love and embrace you as a family member, they still have natural instincts they rely on to protect themselves from harm. Respecting their space at all times will help ensure a lifetime of family harmony.

With the aid of a few turtles and Canadian geese to distract owners, Rover was able to interview a number of recent Pet Scene Photo Contestants at a park located somewhere in the greater Las Vegas area. Out of ten canines interviewed, seven confided they were willing to pose for pictures out of sheer loyalty and to bring smiles. Another revealed she could be bribed with treats, lots of treats. One other adorable pup whose overbite gives

SPEAK OUT! the impression of a perpetual smile told his story. He spilled the beans, literally at his owner’s birthday party at the park pavilion. He was then told to wipe that smile off his face. But because he could not, he was entered into Pet Scene’s Best Smile Photo Contest! Rover also met a huge yappy dog which confessed to being so needy for attention, that wearing hats, glasses, or other human attire seemed necessary. Generally, dogs enjoy the playful experiences, antics, and treats pet owners employ to snap photographs. Cats, however, appear more aloof. When asked, one feline just stared. No others could be reached for comment.

Rover leaves us with three thoughts. He believes all pet owners share a love for nature and desire animals to be healthy and happy. Further, he suggests they can improve communication by listening to their pets’ sounds, and noting expressions or behavior. You’ve got 20 minutes until you have to be at the V-E-T and suddenly Fido can spell and Tiger is now hanging by one claw from your living room drapes. What do you do? The trick for a happy, stress-free trip to the veterinary clinic starts way before the actual day of the appointment. Here are 7 tips to keep your fur babies at ease when they have to visit the doctor.

Get your dog used to the car. According to Dr. Cade Lavengco, DVM at Town Center Animal Hospital, “The best time to get a puppy used to a car ride is when they are young. This is the time where motion sickness could be prevented for life. Most puppies will get motion sickness at a young age but exposing them early could prevent a life-long problem.” Plus, if the only time your pup sees the inside of a vehicle is on trips to the vet, chances are he’s not going to eagerly hop in the backseat. If car rides mean trips to the park, visits to your favorite coffee shop for Puppiccinos, and shopping trips to the pet supply store to pick out a new toy, your pooch won’t hightail it out of the garage. A bit of a backseat driver, your kitty will probably travel in a crate. If you only take the crate out when it’s time for a vet visit, your kitty is likely to snow-angel the moment the crate comes into view. Leave the crate out so the kitty can get used to the smell and put some treats in there so when they decided to explore, they get a bonus. Get your fur baby used to being handled. The more your dog or cat gets snuggled, belly rubbed, scratched, and has their paws and tail played with, the easier it will be for your vet to examine them without incident. Pack a toy. You wouldn’t expect a toddler to sit quietly in a waiting room without any entertainment, so why a pet? Bring an especially intriguing toy for your pet so they have something to keep them distracted. also pack a shirt or blanket that smells like you. This will keep your pet calm during the wait and can be put on the exam table to relax them during the appointment.

Stay calm. Animals pick up on the moods and emotions of their human counterparts. If you are anxious, upset, or frightened, your fur baby will be too. Take a deep breath, speak calmly, and remember that they will mirror your state. If you have a particularly anxious or aggressive pet, ask the staff ahead of time if they use “fear-free handling techniques”. Sometimes, the less restraint used on an animal, the calmer they will be. A pet who is tied down like Hannibal Lecter might get a tad antsy. Consider using essential oils or pheromones for increased relaxation. Lavender oil is known to be quite relaxing for dogs and there are products designed for cats that can keep anxiety at bay. This can be sprayed on the carrier, blankets, or your pup’s collar.

Magician… Animal Lover… Children’s Book Author… AS A MAGICIAN: Aaron got his start at the young age of six and quickly turned his grandmother’s gift of a magic set into a full-time hobby. Up until the age of 14, he kept his magic to family and friends. Then, Aaron began performing for various schools, organizations, and private parties. Now, he and his cast have toured 45 U.S. states, 35 countries, and 6 continents. Aaron is the only magician who has been commissioned by the U.S. Pentagon for a command performance for the U.S. Military. AS AN ANIMAL LOVER: When asked about his first pet, Aaron shared this heartwarming story: My mother told me that on the ride home from the hospital after my birth, she whispered to me “We have a dog waiting for you at home”. His commitment to pet rescue is a culmination of many experiences; seeing all the pets that need rehoming, learning about puppy mills and other pet rescue issues. For Aaron, the stage offers him a platform to share a positive message about rescued pets.

CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHOR: People are always happy to meet Dingo, the dog with the long tongue; he is cute and irresistible. He travels with Aaron sometimes going on stage as a poster “child” for rescue pets. Adopted at age 2 by Aaron, she already had a few unsuccessful adoptions in her short life. “She is too excitable” was the reason given for the returns. Aaron stresses the importance of a careful selection process matching the prospective pet parent with the right pet. Rescued pets have already been through too much change. Ingredients: 2 Cups Seedless Watermelon 1 Cup Coconut Water* Optional: you can add 1/4 cup honey or blackstrap molasses

Blend the ingredients together to make a liquid. Pour the liquid into some ice cube trays and freeze. Note: if you use the silicone bone or paw print molds you must use a cookie tray or something solid to be able to pour the liquid into the molds and then to place in the freezer. Otherwise, you’ll have a sticky mess on your counter, floor or freezer. *Coconut water is naturally refreshing and contains easily digested carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Ice Cream Treats Ingredients: 1 Cup Ripe Bananas 8 Ounces Yogurt 1/3 Cup Peanut Butter** Blend ingredients together. Pour mixture into ice cube trays, plastic or paper cups, or freezer molds and place into freezer. **Peanut butter – it is best to use unsalted and unsweetened AND check the label to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs.

The ingredients in these recipes are considered safe for dogs. Remember though that these are treats and need to be offered carefully. It is always best to add just one or two new items at a time in case your dog has an adverse reaction to them. If your dog has any medical condition please check with your veterinarian about offering these frozen treats to them.

Poca, who graced our cover in July/August 2013 exudes that beauty and grace, yet she is more than a gorgeous beautiful horse. Rescued by L.E.A.N. and officially adopted by Paradise Ranch on October 29, 2012, Poca is able to emotionally connect with people for whom emotional connections are difficult and for some, impossible. L.E.A.N. stands for Local Equine Assistance Network. It is a unique horse nonprofit because it does not have a physical ranch or sanctuary. It operates as a network of fosters, volunteers and sponsors who rescue horses seized by or surrendered to the Animal Control agencies of Clark County, Nevada. L.E.A.N. horses are kept in private foster homes and cared for by the members of that barn.

THROUGH HORSE ASSISTED THERAPY Poca is Paradise Ranch’s old lady Appaloosa, she was found running alone on Nellis Boulevard. Beaten, starved, hooves so long she could hardly walk, and with a wound on her withers down to her spin; Poca had given up on people and life. The rescue group LEAN took ownership of Poca and called Mr. Paul to help assess her. Poca walked right over to Mr. Paul’s young daughter, placing her forehead into his daughter’s outstretched hand. It was love at first sight. Poca took many months to rehabilitate and it took time for her to learn to trust adults again; but she is now one of the client’s favorite horses.

Since joining the Paradise Ranch therapy team in 2012, Poca has helped hundreds of children and adults through Horse Assisted Therapy. Poca is, admittedly, a favorite among the clients. Poca lives at Mr. Paul’s family’s home a short five miles from Paradise Ranch. The ranch boasts an indoor climate controlled arena, with soft sand, and gentle loving staff. For this reason, Poca and her horse brothers and sisters argue over who gets to go to work for the day, no one minds the extra attention or afternoon naps indoors. Poca is now in her (very) late 20’s, and is feeling great. As an old lady she needs extra feed, beet pulp, and equine senior to help her keep her weight up. One of the many examples of the impact Poca has on children; can be seen with a child who was in the foster care system because of abuse and neglect who found a close friend she could trust in Poca. This little girl, who had a much harder life than most want to imagine in her mere 8 years on this earth, would lovingly brush Poca with tears streaming down her face and say “You are a good girl Poca. You deserve to be loved and so do I.” Poca will live out the rest of her life safe and loved at Paradise Ranch.

My niece Garyn gave me such a special gift & I was so very blessed to have had you in my life. You were so loyal, loving & intelligent. Grandma really misses you saying her name. You had the most beautiful fur and gorgeous markings I had ever seen. God said ask the animals - they will teach you. You taught me so much; about unconditional love, about nature & more importantly about God. As Vest said, dogs are the only friends that will never leave us, that will be with us in the best situations but also during the bad moments we have in life. I’d like to believe like in the movie “A Dog’s Purpose” that your soul will make it back to me, so we can have a little more time before you go to be with Jesus. That would be so wonderful! FUN INDOOR GAMES to beat the summer boredom blues

Food puzzles are inexpensive and come in a variety of shapes and styles specifically designed for dogs or cats. It can be a great way to stimulate their problemsolving skills and help them fulfill their primal instincts to hunt and scavenge. They will enjoy the challenge of retrieving the treat and you will enjoy watching them try! Another stimulating activity for both dogs and cats is “Hide the Treat”. Simply take a few favorite pet snacks and place them in a bowl where your pet can see them. Then, take them out of the bowl and hide them throughout the house. This game will encourage their natural scavenging instincts and will give them a little exercise in the process. It is always much more exciting to find a treasure than to have it handed to you. Hide and Seek is another great game many dogs love to play. Start by telling your dog to sit and stay while you go find a hiding spot in the house. Once you’re hidden, call him to come find you. When he finds you (which hopefully he will), give him lots of enthusiastic praise and love. Your dog may insist on playing this game over and over again if you’re willing.
