September – Labor Day The unofficial end of “summer” and more pet events…. It is still August though as we’re writing this; we’re finalizing this issue and prepping it for the printer. For us, this section is an opportunity to share our thoughts and feelings. Some of the thoughts centered on words: community, connection, communication, and common concerns. In the light of what is happening in Texas our thoughts changed. The arrival of Hurricane Harvey disrupted personal plans for people in those areas. Disaster preparedness plans became top priority. It is difficult to imagine the loss and destruction to people, pets and property. It is difficult to know how to feel, how to respond. We’re thankful for the government agencies, charities, religious organizations and animal rescue groups that are being mobilized to provide disaster relief, collect funds, and send volunteers. By the time you read this the disaster relief and cleanup work will be underway. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and pets of Texas. On a local level, we are so thankful for the sense of connection we feel with the pet community of Las Vegas. Our shared commitment to making a difference for pets in our community helps sustains our passion and purpose. It expands our personal efforts in ways that alone we could not accomplish.

National Service Dog Month National Service Dog Month celebrates service dogs and promotes awareness about the services they perform. It encourages us to learn more about the service performed by these dedicated dogs. First, what is a service dog and what do they do? The Americans with Disabilities Act defines a service dog as follows: A service animal means any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. For a person to legally qualify to have a service dog, they must have a disability that substantially limits their ability to perform at least one major life task without assistance. There are so many different types of service dogs depending on the needs of their handler. A few types are: Autism Assistance Dogs, Emergency Medical Response Dogs, Diabetic Alert Dogs, Hearing Dogs, Guide Dogs, Medical Alert Dogs, Psychiatric Service Dogs, Seizure Alert Dogs, and Wheelchair Assistance Dogs. There is often confusion about other therapy animals that are not considered service dogs. There are therapy animals that are trained to visit in hospitals, retirement and nursing homes, and schools. Another type is Animal Assisted Therapy. These animals assist therapists in helping their clients meet important goals in their recovery.

P
oppy will never win a dog show. She will probably never hear me calling her to come in the house. She will never be able to jump up on the couch or walk on a leash. She is handicapped due to birth defects or neglect or possibly both. But she has given me so much. Poppy came into my life a little over eight months ago. At the time, I wasn’t sure if she was deaf or brain-damaged or just wasn’t used to being in a home with people. She had been picked up as a stray and rescued by Forget Me Not Animal Sanctuary of Las Vegas. Her ear canals were plugged with dirt and infection. She had been in a foster home for about two months, but her life before that is unknown. Since then I’ve come to realize she probably does have some deafness. She doesn’t respond to everyday noises, but does appear to respond to very loud noises. This makes it a challenge to train her as well as keeping her safe; she will never be able to hear me if she were to escape our yard and be in imminent danger. Her safety is completely in my hands. She also appears to be brain damaged. She will sometimes sit in one spot and stare off into space without recognizing the other dogs or me. And sometimes she will look at you with one eye but the other eye points in the opposite direction. These deficits do not matter because she has so much to give. 8

Senior pets are the most overlooked pets in shelters across America, but the plight of disabled pets is far worse. People involved in animal welfare do a great job of advocating the joy in adopting “other abled” pets. However, these pets are passed up by adopters preferring a young pet or one without special needs. Many of these potential adopters, without blame, are not able to afford veterinary care above the average cost of regular checkups and vaccinations. But what about those pets who only require a little extra care or attention? Many people want the cute little puppy or kitten, but what about the ones that have been there before? Some pets have behavioral issues, but a majority of those behavioral issues can be worked on. These pets have so much to give. Many times their behavioral issues are because the people who owned them before, didn’t take enough time to teach them or take them out for walks or just show them love and keep them comfortable. They deserve to be happy, to be loved and to be given the chance to show people how much joy they can give if only they have the opportunity to do so. Poppy continues to blossom revealing her true self. She loves her toys and plays with Nicki, her new best friend. She also runs even though her back kneecaps are fused incorrectly, so her running is more like hopping. Some people have told me she is lucky to have me. I quickly point out that I am the lucky one to have her in my life.

M
any of us are fortunate enough to share our homes with our dogs, providing food, water, shelter and love in exchange for unconditional love in return, steady companionship and comfort from them. While it is a wonderful and everlasting relationship and dogs would never complain, or tell us otherwise, there is one thing that they could be missing, and that one thing is socialization. Some dogs are socialized from the day they are able to stand on their own four paws. They have the advantage of being brought up in an environment with other dogs, cats, or other animals and many visitors of the human variety. However, other dogs might not share that same luxury. For a potpourri of reasons, they might not be as comfortable with other animals or confident around other humans. For those, they adhere to a very different lifestyle.
BY NATURE, DOGS ARE SOCIAL ANIMALS.
Some require the emotional reassurance of having another pet to share their lives with. If at one time they were living in harmony with another pet and are now the only pet, it is quite conceivable that they miss having a companion of the same species. They may play less or are now somewhat withdrawn. Sometimes they appear irritable. If there are no obvious medical reasons for their melancholy behavior, they may simply miss having a friend around. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they need a new dog in the house, but, they may benefit from frequent trips to the dog park or a scheduled walk with a friend and their dog. 12

As people, we have many opportunities for social outlets both in person and on social media. Even television provides us with entertainment and a sense of escape. For dogs, however, we are their only source of companionship. They rely on us to monitor when they are social and with whom. For those dogs who have never been friendly with other animals, it’s possible that they don’t “miss” having another friend around, however, and not to burst our own bubbles—but they may want to see other people besides their owners! If they are friendly toward people when they do encounter them, chances are, they’d like to socialize a bit more with human friends outside of their household, if only for a while. Realizing that many people adopt older dogs, it can be difficult to determine how social your pup once was, but it is something to consider trying in a safe environment. For those who are able to adopt puppies, it’s important to get them acclimated with everyone (including humans and other animals) from the start. Here is where we, as humans, have the advantage to make sure that the pup is social. This will build confidence in the pup and get them accustomed to meeting others. In turn, it will make their lives and yours easier (and happier) when it comes time to have people in your home, or when your pup meets another animal on a dog walk. I
was having one of those days - too many errands and appointments squeezed into it – stressful! One of my errands was taking my grandson to the dentist office. And, yes, there was an aquarium. As I sat waiting for my grandson’s name to be called, I totally enjoyed watching the fish glide through the water. Interestingly, it only housed two large goldfish. They had lots of places to explore and they seemed to be playing hide and seek with each other. Perhaps that is why in Switzerland it is illegal to have fewer than two goldfish in one tank. They know that goldfish are social and need companionship. These two goldfish were frolicking and having lots of fun, totally enjoying each other and I totally enjoyed watching them.

We receive so many benefits from having fish in our lives. But what do the fish get in return? First, their basic physical needs have to be satisfied. Their habitat must be sized correctly for the type and number of fish that will be placed in it. They also need areas to explore and to hide in to feel safe. Setting up and maintaining an aquarium requires research and work. Second, their social nature and needs must be considered. You also have to learn about their ideal companions. You want to create a compatible community of happy fish. Though not cuddly like dogs and cats, fish do experience pain and suffer from depression and boredom. It is important to provide them with an enriched environment that replicates their natural habitat as much as possible. Fish are intelligent and are capable of fun and playfulness.

Congratulations
on adding a new fur baby to your family! BUT NOW WHAT? By Gail Mayhugh Besides the awesome hugs, licks and baby breath, getting a new puppy can be an exciting, uncertain and sometimes frustrating time. You have this new living, breathing and chewing addition to your home. I know that we shouldn’t have to rearrange our lives and home for our new additions, but we do it in order to make this transition safe while still creating an enjoyable and relaxing place for everyone in our home.

ow we all know accidents are going to happen so we need to take precautions to limit them as much as we can. Remember everything is a new adventure for them. They’re on an all-day treasure hunt. They don’t know what they can and cannot touch. What can be fun and what can hurt them. Where they’re allowed to go and where they need to stay out of. We have to teach them these things. If you’ve not had a little one in a long time it may be a big adjustment until they are house trained to your rules, just like kids. My girlfriend just got a puppy. It’s her first in over 15 years so it’s been an eye opening adjustment for her. Lots of “Emma No’s” “Emma Ack’s” but they’re working it through together.
I think for all new puppy parents, potty training is one of the biggest challenges. So for their bed the best thing you can do is purchase one with a Crypton cover, liquids run right off of it. Actually, no matter the age of your pet, they are the best. Now you’ll still want to wash it but at least you’re not having to also wash the pillow each time. You can also put a waterproof fitted crib sheet on their bed. Then cover it with a regular fitted sheet. Again easier clean-up for those accidents that are going to happen. 16
Take inventory of your decorative pillows and bedding. Now might not be the time to have your best ones out. Watch any that have tassels, trims, buttons or beading on them. When I had my Millie, one night I noticed she wasn’t in the room with me. I went a hunting and there she was up on the bed enjoying the tassels on my pillows. I knew I had to teach her not to touch, but until I had that down, off they went as I didn’t need her choking on an insignificant tassel. All dogs, but especially puppies like to run and play, going from zero to Mach speed in seconds. So think of those delicate, best and treasured things you have out and put them in a less dangerous place from getting broken. Think of baby proofing your house, but for your puppy. By putting those items up and out-of-the-way for a couple months, it will make it less stressful for you and your playful little one. We all have way too many cords in our homes, goodness I have six chargers just in one place. Cords need to be arranged or tied so they’re not so interesting for them to nibble on. There are some great cord control products out on the market to keep them organized and detangled. Start creating boundaries by using different textiles on the floor. With my first puppy I didn’t want her in the kitchen around the cooking area. I put a floor runner where I wanted her to stop. The texture was different from the tile and she learned her boundary.

After a couple months I was able to take it up because she knew the distance she wasn’t allowed to cross. Then when we got her a sister, she simply followed her lead. o you ever wonder about the personality of a special needs puppy? Do they know how much they impact our lives? The day I adopted a tiny Maltese weighing in at two and a half pounds, who I would name Little Ray Charles, I wondered the same thing. There was something about this little one, he would sit and stare off into space. No one ever seemed interested in him, months passed by and no one took him home. I brought him home and he acted like he had been with me his entire life and fit right into my life like a tiny missing puzzle piece. Little Ray was diagnosed as being completely blind; he was not cross eyed as I was told. At five months old he was diagnosed with a microscopic liver shunt, and has been on a special diet and medication ever since. If I had not caught his inoperable liver shunt early he may not have lived as long as he has. At the age of seven he began to have seizures. Despite his health conditions, now age of nine he is a happy and as healthy as he can be. He has set the standards for what I will look for in any future pets, my heart will now always be open to a blind or special needs dog. Despite his health issues he is absolutely perfect and acts like a puppy still to this day. The best part of coming home is to see this tiny six pound bundle of joy come running to me as fast as he can and wagging his tiny tail ready to be picked up.

ALEXA FAHD is a 15 year old who has a huge heart with a special
place for all her furry friends! Her first experience with pet adoption was when we adopted a pet poodle when she was 8 years old. Fransis was scared, matted, abandoned, and probably beaten but with lots of love she flourished and is now a very happy 15 year old dog. Alexa is currently Miss Las Vegas’ Outstanding Teen for the Miss America pageant system. Her platform is “Adopt don’t Shop” . Alexa’s volunteer activities include collecting blankets for Paws For The Cause. She placed a decorated dog-themed box in the lobby of her dance studio for blanket donations. She also shared her blanket drive on social media. It was a big success and she collected over 100 blankets for Paws for the Cause! In addition, she volunteered at The Animal Foundation’s Halloween Pet Costume Contest and Best in Show, as well as Meals on Wheels and Heaven Can Wait Animal Sanctuary.

What You Need To Know About…
Canine Distemper By Dr. Lyndi Ashley ~ Town Center Animal Hospital
WHAT IS IT? A contagious virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of puppies and dogs. WHAT ARE THE CLINICAL SIGNS? When dogs
initially become infected with canine distemper virus, they display signs consistent with a common cold, such as a fever, coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, lack of appetite, and even vomiting. As the disease progresses, the virus attacks the nervous system, causing twitching, seizures, and even paralysis. Distemper can be fatal. Sometimes, distemper is referred to as “hard pad disease” because the virus may cause the foot pads to harden.
HOW DO DOGS GET CANINE DISTEMPER?
Any dog can get canine distemper virus, but young, unvaccinated puppies are more at risk. Dogs usually contract the virus through airborne exposure to contaminated respiratory secretions. Dogs and/or puppies that are kept in crowded conditions, such as animal shelters, are more likely to contract the virus. Canine distemper is not zoonotic, meaning people cannot get the virus from infected dogs and/or wildlife.
HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? More commonly, canine distemper is diagnosed based on the dog’s age, vaccination status, and clinical signs. However, there are specific and advanced lab tests that can confirm the presence of the virus.
HOW CAN IT BE TREATED? Unfortunately, there is no cure for canine distemper virus. A single drug does not exist that kills the virus. Instead, affected dogs are treated with supportive care, to ensure the pet stays hydrated and warm. Veterinarians may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Dogs suspected of being infected with canine distemper virus are separated from others to minimize the risk of further infection. 22

CAN IT BE PREVENTED? Yes! Since there is no
cure for canine distemper, prevention is key. The most important aspect of prevention is vaccination. Both puppies and adult dogs should be vaccinated against canine distemper virus. Since puppies have an immature immune system, vaccination is essential in providing disease protection. When born, a puppy is protected by antibodies in colostrum (mother’s milk). As the puppy ages, protection from mother’s milk wears off and the puppy becomes susceptible to infection and disease. To provide adequate protection during these times of susceptibility, veterinarians will vaccinate a puppy for distemper every 3-4 weeks (booster shots). Veterinarians may start vaccinating puppies as early as 6 weeks of age. The vaccine commonly used is a combination vaccine, which protects against canine distemper virus, along with parvovirus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza. Until a puppy has been fully vaccinated, owners should refrain from taking their pet to dog parks, grooming salons, doggy daycare and even obedience classes. Veterinarians recommend adult dogs receive a yearly vaccination to remain protected. Isolation of infected animals is also important in the prevention and spread of the virus. If you suspect canine distemper virus or if your dog has been around other sick animals, please seek veterinary care immediately. When handling a sick animal, always wear gloves and thoroughly wash your hands.

swinging dog’s tail or by a curious cat.
KEEP YOUR PETS INDOORS ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT. Animals are at risk for cruel treatment

“Why Do They Do That?”
Our pets are a constant source of entertainment. Their comical behaviors make us laugh and often make us wonder, “Why do they DO that”? While some behaviors are unique quirks of an individual pet, many “somewhat strange” things they do serve an actual purpose. Here are a few explanations of pet behaviors that many people find puzzling:
DOGS
SPINNING AROUND IN THEIR BED – Dogs
will often spin around in their bed several times before ultimately lying down. Why? This behavior has been passed down from their wolf ancestors that would make a bed in the grass or dirt. Spinning around several times would ensure that there were no snakes or bugs in their spot and would also smash down the grass and soften up the dirt. In warm temperatures, it would also help them get down into the cooler soil.
THE HEAD TILT – In addition to
looking absolutely ADORABLE, the head tilt also serves a purpose. By tilting their head in different positions, it allows a dog to pick up sounds coming from different directions and helps them locate audio cues that may help them identify a sound. Some experts also suggest that tilting their head helps get their muzzle out of the way for a better view of our facial expressions and body language.
KICKING UP GRASS AND DIRT AFTER POOPING – Does your dog exuberantly kick up grass
and dirt around his freshly made poop? This is perfectly normal behavior for both male and female dogs that also stems from their wolf ancestry. Dogs have scent glands under their paws and between their toes. When they scrape their paws on the ground, it stimulates these glands, leaving even more of their scent around their favorite pooping spot. The scent secreted from these glands actually lasts much longer than the scent of the feces itself. It is another way for your dog to mark their territory and claim it as their own.
CATS
FACE RUBBING – Have
you noticed that your cat seems to rub its face against virtually everything in the house, including you? This behavior is called “bunting”. Cats have pheromone (scent) glands on either side of their face, primarily around their whiskers. By rubbing against the objects and people in their home, they are staking a claim on their space. Leaving their scent on these items lets other cats know that this territory has been claimed and it’s MINE.
THE SLOW BLINK – Does your cat ever
look at you and give you a long, slow blink? If so, that’s a great sign! Cats use this blink as a way to communicate to other cats that they feel comfortable and at ease with their presence. In cat language, it means everything is GOOD! When your cat gives you the slow blink, he’s telling you essentially the same thing. Some believe that slow blinking at humans is a sign of affection and love. It is often referred to as a “Kitty Kiss”.
TOYS IN THE WATER BOWL – Do you ever find your Kitty’s toys sitting in the bottom of their water bowl? Believe it or not, your cat is hiding their precious toys in a place they consider to be safe. Although they may not be hidden very well, your cat is leaving them there because they see their water bowl as being a secure part of their territory; the toys are safe there until they are ready to play with them again. As an added bonus, their toys will undoubtedly come out a little cleaner!
Although we know the reasons behind some pet behaviors, there are still many that we don’t. In the end, only our furry friends truly know why they do what they do. 30

In addition to providing access to basic resources such as food and water, it’s important to provide an enriching environment at home to improve your dog’s quality of life and meet their mental and physical needs. For those dog owners who leave their home to work all day, it’s especially important to have a routine in place that helps calm your dog and maintain his or her well-being throughout the day. Incorporating animal enrichment techniques, like some of those used daily at The Animal Foundation, can help to prevent boredom and curb unwanted behaviors. You’ll have fun doing it and, more importantly, your dog can avoid becoming a daytime couch potato. Before you walk out the door in the morning, consider taking these easy steps to creating a calming and relaxing environment for your furry friend: To discourage destructive chewing habits, give your dog a sizeappropriate KONG toy filled with dog-approved foods such as peanut butter, bananas or plain low-fat yogurt. KONGs are petsafe and feature durable, built-to-chew rubber. Most dogs love them. We recommend stuffing the KONG and then freezing it to make it last longer. Timed puzzle feeders, such as the Foobler, can also help keep your dog busy and entertained during the day. The Foobler has six timer-activated pods with a mechanical ball that can be set to go off up to 90 minutes apart, keeping your dog engaged. Pet pheromone products are said to mimic soothing natural dog pheromones and come in various forms, including sprays, plug-in diffusers, wipes, and collars. Playing calming music can also help to ease any stress your dog may be experiencing in your absence during the day. Recent studies, in fact, have shown that classical music can lower the heart rate and effectively calm an anxious dog.

If you speak to your pet in the real world, they’re not going to chat in human language. Of course, if you were writing fantasy, anything would be possible. But, let’s consider the real world; your world.

Dealing daily with situations, you may go through ups and downs with learning, school activities, and friends. You may experience stress. After a recent opinion poll, here’s what you told us: • 75% of kids surveyed said, “Yes,” when asked if they talked to their pets. • 28% said they do talk about feelings, how their day went, and problems. (Animals don’t pry or ask, “why”. They just seem to understand.) • 14% interviewed practice speaking in front of a pet for assignments or family matters. • Nearly 20% read to their pets! This can be great practice and fun! • There were a few who added they think, meditate or pray while holding their furry friend.

There are ongoing studies to find out if animals really do comfort young, old, or learning-impaired persons. Some observers suggest the findings are inconclusive (That means nothing can be proven at this time). Beyond the softness, warmth, and compassionate eyes, would you say animals are good listeners? Maybe, like humans, it depends on the individual. Do you think animals have the ability to understand and encourage you? Do you talk to your pet?
WRITING AND YOUR PET
Some children (and adults) write letters, then read them out loud to their pets. Truthfully, no one in our survey claimed doing this, but once I remember missing my cat at school. I scribbled a note during free time and read it to her when I got home. (If I’d done this more often, I may have developed better writing and speaking skills!) Do you think my kitty understood? Maybe not, but animals do seem to pick up on the joy in our voices or tears in our eyes. Their reactions can be rewarding, heartwarming, or amusing. You may even gush with giggles. My two cats, Solomon and Rowdy, very different in size, color and personality share one characteristic – a flabby belly that swings from side to side. It is especially noticeable when they’re chasing each other in the hallway.
Though some people think the flabby belly is a characteristic of indoor cats, actually it is one shared with even large cats in the wild. The anatomical name for the flabby, sagging belly is primordial pouch. It serves a number of functions.
PROVIDES PROTECTION – Even when fighting playfully cats tend to kick at their
opponent’s abdomen with their hind legs. It’s called “bunny kicking”. Having that extra skin provides protection for their internal organs.
HELPS WITH STRETCHING - Cats are extremely flexible. The extra skin helps them to
fully stretch their limbs and allows a wider range of motion when jumping.
STORAGE POUCH - The primordial pouch was critical to our cat’s ancestors. It enabled them to consume their prey at one time after a hunt. Even today, for example, wild lions eat an average of 10 to 15 pounds a day but they may eat up to 60 pounds in one feeding but not again for a few days. The pouch doesn’t actually store food but allows their belly to expand during eating and overeating. Though the primordial pouch is a natural part of your cat’s body, today’s companion cats do not need to “store” their food as their ancestors did. Be careful about overfeeding because cats can store extra fat in their belly flab.
