There’s nothing like hiking in fall up at Mt. Charleston. The cool breezes and the fall colors remind us that fall is really here and winter is on its way. This 3.2-mile roundtrip hike begins off Nevada Highway 157 in Kyle Canyon, a ½ mile past the turnoff to Nevada Highway 158. The trailhead is on the north side of the road with parking on the south side alongside the road. While the length of the hike isn’t that long, there is a thousand-foot elevation gain as you hike back into the canyon.

Eventually, the trail crosses the stream and heads back into the canyon. From here the canyon walls begin to close in and become vertical creating the ‘Fletcher narrows.’ This area is prone to flash flooding so check weather reports before hiking and don’t hike if rain is predicted. As the trail narrows, conditions deteriorate, and rock scrambling is necessary at several points. At the end of the trail, a massive boulder formation blocks the canyon. There is often water running across these boulders creating a waterfall. From here, stop and have some lunch then head back the way you came.

The hike begins in the canyon forest amongst the trees at the Forest Service information board. As you hike along the trail, look for the high elevation cactus that makes this habitat their home. Further up the canyon, you will begin to notice a small stream flowing. Depending on the weather, the stream length will vary. Along the stream are wild roses, columbine and maidenhair ferns. Along the trail you may see old piping – before the use of wells in this area the water from Fletcher Canyon was piped to the Kyle Saw Mill.

Hot summer months last a little longer in Nevada and we are still mopping up the sweat in October. What are the animals doing? Dogs sweat through their feet, and pant to discharge heat. Cats are much the same. However, if a cat pants it is in danger of heat stroke. To stay cool, they limit exertion more than usual and spread out when resting. Bunnies sweat through their lips, nose, chin and feet; however, it is their ears that radiate the heat away from their bodies. The best way to check how they are doing is to check the ears. If a rabbit overheats, the ears will turn red. Good ventilation and cool water is a must for all. Pigs do not sweat either. They overheat easily and need cool water to beat the heat, along with mud. Pigs can get sun burn, so they also need shelter.

As the days grow shorter and cooler, and the visions of summer are behind us, we look forward to longer walks with our loved ones and turning our thoughts to the upcoming winter holidays.

KIDNEY DISEASE In Dogs and Cats

Kidney (renal) disease is a common ailment in dogs and cats, and any age group can be affected. By Dr. Lyndi Ashley, DVM Town Center Animal Hospital â&#x20AC;˘ www.towncentervet.com

What are the most common causes of kidney disease?

How do you diagnose kidney disease?

Any disease process, acute or chronic, that prevents the kidneys from functioning properly. Every wonder what the kidneys do? Well, the kidneys have multiple jobs, but their primary and most important role is to filter the blood and remove toxins.

Before discussing, it is important to understand the difference between acute and chronic kidney disease. In acute cases, the onset is sudden and clinical signs are usually more severe, since blood toxins build up quickly. In chronic cases, the disease usually progresses slowly and clinical signs may go unnoticed for months. Most common causes of acute kidney disease are ingestion of toxins such as certain foods or plants. For example, raisins and grapes can be extremely toxic to dogs. In cats, ingestion of lilies can cause kidney failure and even death. Other causes of acute kidney disease include infectious causes, such as leptospirosis, lyme disease and pyelonephritis. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection usually spread by infected wildlife and concentrated in areas with rivers, lakes and/or streams. Leptospirosis is not common in Nevada. Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks, this is why tick prevention is important in areas where tick burdens are high. Pyelonephritis occurs secondary to a lower urinary tract infection, when bacteria ascend up into the kidneys, causing sudden and often severe illness. Chronic kidney disease usually occurs over a long period of time. In many patients with chronic disease, the underlying cause may not be determined. Chronic kidney disease is more common in aging dogs and cats. 12

During the early stages of kidney disease, the signs are usually non specific, such as increased thirst and urination, and decreased appetite. In acute cases, or when the disease process progresses, you may notice vomiting, lethargy and weight loss.

Since chronic kidney disease may go unnoticed, it is important to include annual veterinarian care. IF your pet is over 7 years of age, it is recommended to have routine check-ups every 6 months. Your veterinarian may perform a physical exam, complete blood profile, and urinalysis. In addition, imaging, such as radiographs (x-rays) and ultrasound of the kidneys may be performed. However, many tests may be normal in early stages of kidney disease. A newer blood test, called SDMA is now routinely used to aid in earlier detection of kidney disease.

What are treatment options?

The mainstay in treating kidney disease, is good hydration and dietary modification. If an underlying cause is determined, other treatments may be used. Occasionally, your pet may need hospitalization for more intensive care. If you think your pet is showing clinical signs of kidney disease, please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Did you know? Ethylene glycol, a common ingredient in anti freeze, is severely toxic to dogs. In addition, giving your pets over-the-counter human drugs, such as aspirin, may cause kidney failure. Please make sure to keep these products out of reach of your furry friends.

ining out with your dog can be an exciting new adventure for you and your favorite pooch to enjoy. With more and more restaurants and coffee shops offering pet-friendly eating areas, the ability to take your dog with you for a cup of coffee or a nice meal with friends is such a welcome option. For the optimal dining experience, there are a few things you can do beforehand to help ensure that your dog is up to a social dining experience. Since you know your dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personality and possible problematic behaviors, you will be able to determine if your dog is a good candidate for a social dining experience. Like many people, not all dogs are comfortable in social situations. Meeting new people, new dogs, and dealing with unpredictable situations can be too much for some dogs. If your dog is very timid or potentially aggressive in social settings, it may be best to leave him at home until you feel confident in his readiness. But if your dog is obedient, good with other dogs, and enjoys meeting new people, he may be the perfect candidate to accompany you on a dining or coffee date.

Before you embark on your first doggie-dining outing, here are a few tips and rules of etiquette you may find helpful: RESTAURANT POLICY u Check out the pet-friendly restaurant you are considering visiting beforehand. Make a note of the table locations and available seating. You may want to check with the staff regarding their pet-friendly policies and call them ahead of time to check on seating availability before you go. SOCIALIZE YOUR DOG u A well-socialized dog that is comfortable with people and unfamiliar surroundings will probably be a good dining companion in a pet-friendly restaurant. Lying down next to your chair and being patient is really all that you are asking of your four-legged companion. Your dog should be wellversed in the basic commands of sit, lie down, and stay. 14

BEFORE YOU GO u It is important to have a plan before you embark on this new adventure. Prepare for your visit by packing a water bowl and a chewy or quiet toy for your dog to enjoy while you are eating. Be sure to exercise your dog and feed him before you go to the restaurant. A full-bellied, tired pooch will only add to your chances of having an uneventful, relaxing time with your friends. Immediately before you enter the restaurant, give your dog a chance to go potty. (An unexpected potty accident can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable dining interruption.) Plan on bringing a friend with you for your restaurant visit. If YOU need a restroom break, your friend can take care of your dog in your absence.

AT THE TABLE u Keep your dog leashed at all

times. While seated at your table, keep your dog’s leash in your hand or readily available to you. Do not tie the leash to the table or even your chair. An unexpected “dog emergency”, like a scrambling mouse or squirrel, may surprise you both with an overturned table or chair. Either keep the leash in hand or try sitting on it, wrapping it around your thigh or ankle. Keep your dog close to you where he is not obstructing the foot traffic of other patrons or your server.

TABLE MANNERS u It is always important for

you and your pup to observe good table manners; no begging, barking or feeding your dog from your plate or silverware. (It is a violation of health codes for pets to use the restaurant’s dishware or silverware.) If you’ve forgotten your water bowl, your server will typically be happy to bring you a plastic water bowl for your dog. Additionally, your dog should not be allowed on your lap or seated in a chair at the table. Pets should be positioned next to your chair where they can relax comfortably.

You know, the one your pet gives you summoning you to a little bit of quality time? Perhaps it’s a bark, a cry or a playful growl.

t’s those very gestures that remind us that while we have plenty to do to keep us busy, our pets need to be emotionally stimulated as well.

We have many social outlets, events, chores, and jobs to do. Sometimes, we just want to sit back and relax. For our pets, however, all they have is us and it’s very easy to let hours slip by without giving them the attention they deserve! Hence, boredom settles in and here’s where your pet might begin misbehaving. After all, if they misbehave, they get attention! So, with our busy lifestyles, how do we make time to give our pets a little TLC and pampering? There are many ways to do this and you don’t necessarily need hours to do it! You can easily break it up into segments throughout the day. During the work week, you can start your day a little bit earlier and take your pup for a walk, even if it is a short one. They will enjoy getting out, sniffing around and get a bit of exercise as well. When you come home from work, another short walk would make them even happier! On the weekends, perhaps extend this walk a little. If you had a rough day and want to relax for a few moments, your pet will be more than happy to relax with you. Have them watch television with you but cuddle up next to them while you’re doing it. A few belly rubs would make it that much more enjoyable for your pooch (or cat, if they enjoy it too)! Have a pool? During the summer months, why not take a few minutes to bring your dog in with you. Swimming is great exercise for a dog and if you are in there with them to make sure they are safe, this will provide a great bonding experience! 20

If you don’t have a pool, consider getting them their own pool to splash around in! If you have an energetic dog who loves to run, take them in your backyard, or drive them up to the park (if it’s fenced in) and let them run around. Throw a ball and let them play fetch. Again, it doesn’t need to be for long periods of time. Short periods of attention can go a very long way. Your pet will appreciate these moments and it will keep them (and you) satisfied and happy. Have an older dog? Get some toys and keep them on hand. Distribute new ones throughout the week. (This works for younger dogs too). This will give them something new to discover and if you’re by their side while they are playing, they’ll most likely enjoy it more. You don’t need to break the bank either for new toys. Check out the clearance items at your local pet shop. I’ve found that dogs love routine, so if possible, give your pet something to look forward to and follow the same routine daily. They’ll grow accustomed to knowing that they always get their morning walk, or they always have “play time” in the afternoon. Believe it or not, this will eliminate some of the anxiety if they sense they are on the same schedule each day.

Of course, any additional quality time is a bonus as I don’t know many pets who will reject affection whenever time permits!

Caring for PIT BULLS This article is for the millions of households that already have pit bulls in their family — quite a large audience, since it’s estimated that 20% of the nation’s 90 million dogs are pit bull terriers.1 Caring for them is much the same as caring for any breed of dog, but it’s good to be aware of a few health issues and considerations that are common with bully breeds. ➺ By Dr. Ken Sieranski, Directory of Veterinary Services, The Animal Foundation

OBESITY

Energetic, agile and friendly pit bulls need exercise to keep muscle tone and to prevent problems with weight gain. In fact, obesity is one of the most common health concerns for pit bulls. Plan to take long walks with your dog and make time for plenty of play sessions – it will be good for your health too! 2

Pit Bulls are energetic eaters as well, so provide a high-quality, high-protein diet with plenty of nutrients and vitamins. While it might be tempting to share table scraps and human food, those morsels often contribute to canine obesity. It’s best to refrain.

ALLERGIES

Despite their sturdy exterior, pit bulls can be susceptible to allergies. Allergies can be food-related, or they may be associated with the outdoors. Skin irritations, skin infections and itching can be some of the most common signs. If the allergy is food-related, you may also see signs of diarrhea, vomiting or even chronic ear infections. Work with your veterinarian to determine the cause and treatment of any symptoms your dog is displaying. During your appointment, be prepared to let your veterinarian know of any recent diet changes or new environmental factors.

HIP DYSPLASIA

As a large dog breed, pit bull terriers are susceptible to hip dysplasia, which is a result of the hip joint not forming properly when the dog is young. Symptoms, sometimes subtle, can include difficulty rising from a sitting/laying position or a change in walking. Preventing obesity can help slow the progression of symptoms, and it’s one of the most important things you can do to take stress off of your dog’s joints. If you notice any change in the way your dog is walking, visit your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.

HYPOTHYROIDISM

While several other breeds are more susceptible, hypothyroidism – a drop in hormones produced by the thyroid gland — can 24

affect some pit bulls. Low energy, weight gain, and dull hair or hair loss are common warning signs. Your veterinarian can help identify and treat this condition, often with hormone replacement therapy.

VETERINARY EXAMS AND VACCINATIONS

The best way to identify and prevent health concerns for your pit bull terrier is to visit your veterinarian each year for a checkup. For dogs seven and older, it’s recommended that you visit the vet twice a year. As with every member of your family, vaccinations and booster shots are important, so make sure your pet gets the recommended vaccinations as a puppy and throughout his or her lifetime. Pit bulls have an average lifespan of 11 to 13 years. Follow the tips listed above, and you’ll be well on the way to making those years healthy and happy for your precious pet! “Pit Bull” is not an AKC-recognized breed but rather a term that has evolved to describe many dogs with certain physical characteristics. 2 The American Temperament Test Society found bit bulls to be less aggressive than many other breeds, including Golden Retrievers and Chihuahuas. 1

October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month National Pit Bull Awareness Day is October 27, 2018 National Pit Bull Awareness Day was established in 2007 by Bless the Bullys, a pit bull rescue and education group in Middle Tennessee, as a nationwide effort to bring positive awareness and attention to pit bulls. In 2011 due to the success of National Pit Bull Awareness Day, October was designated as National Pit Bull Awareness Month. The goals are to raise awareness and appreciation for pit bulls, educate and encourage positive communications and experiences. They are dedicated to restoring the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier and help change public perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners.

ave you ever seen “Finding Nemo” and wanted to recreate the amazing dynamic between the characters in your very own aquarium? Great News! Maintenance is one of the biggest factors in keeping up a healthy and vibrant tank. These will help stabilize the pH levels of your tank and keep the water ideal for the fish. Las Vegas’ own Andy Gil was invited to ride along with Las Vegas Metro K9 Officer Sean Malia and his partner K9 Bear. He was able to witness an evening on the Vegas streets with the crime fighting duo and learn more about these amazing true First Responders. Andy Gil: Sean, what brought you to the Las Vegas Metro PD from California? Did you ever see yourself in the beginning working with K9 and now SWAT? K9 Sean: My uncle was a retired police officer living here in Las Vegas and told me great things about LVMPD 20 years ago. And working in K9 and assisting the SWAT team is a privilege and was always a goal of mine. Andy Gil: We often come across many people that don’t think about what it really entails and what training is involved. Talk to me about that, and the fact that you and your K9 team are the definition of real First Responders. Someone may arrive first, but you and Mr. Bear, right here, are the first to go in. K9 Sean: Often times we are on scene with Patrol officers before SWAT arrives. Active crime scenes demand we act and deploy our K9 partners accordingly. Our K9 partners save lives. They give us the time and distance to address a dangerous situation that we encounter. Andy Gil: Tell me about Friends For LV K9 and how important it is for the animals in transition. Also, tell me how you got involved and seem to enjoy the extra work and people you get to meet through the foundation. K9 Sean: Friends is a great organization. Our department takes great care of our K9 partners during their career. Friends allows for that same care to continue helping with all of their medical needs once they retire. It is a passion of mine to ensure these dogs get to enjoy the retirement they deserve. Andy Gil: Tell me all about the Las Vegas Metro K9 Trials. How did it start? It looks like it’s been growing every year. Congrats on YOUR win last year! K9 Sean: We are in our 28th year of the K9 Trials. It’s our largest fundraiser for the non-profit. It brings agencies from all across the country and allows them to showcase their K9 teams. The first two days take place at Lake Las Vegas and the final day takes place at The Orleans Arena. Last year my K9 partner Bear and I competed. We were fortunate to win Top Dog out of 40 competitors and help win Top Agency. This meant a lot to me to represent my K9 section, my department, and my community. Being Vegas Strong is something I take very seriously and hold dear to my heart. Andy Gil: So Bear…tell me, how did it feel to take home the trophy? K9 Bear: Woof, Woof-Woof. For 2018, the American Pet Products Association estimated that $72.13 billion will be spent on pets in the United States alone. Now we know most of that goes for their care, but that still leaves a nice portion that will be spent on creature comforts for both them and us. So what does every animal lover need? Animal-inspired décor in their home. So you don’t go animal crazy, here are a few simple ideas.

ow about a fun dog tail hook. Perfect place for their leashes, collars, and coats. You can find them made out of metal, but I’ve also seen it done using stencils and wall decals with a regular coat hook mounted in the center. Take it another step and personalize it with their names or picture above each hook. You can do this with a wall rub-on or a 4 x 6 pet picture frame. Which you could also use on the wall without the glass and place the coat hook in the center. The outdoors is a great place to make a pet décor haven if you don’t want to mix it in with your interiors. Everyone has a doormat, so welcome your guests with a bone shaped ‘Wipe Your Paws’ mat. You can find them in about every breed, fun and quirky and even have one custom made with your pet’s cute little face or Welcome to Fido’s House. Don’t want it at your front door. There’s always the garage and back door entries too. Outdoor sculptures are popular for pet lovers; they add a little whimsy to your yard. By Gail Mayhugh be a pretty addition to any yard with the realistic faux greenery. If you prefer something more colorful, look for one just made out of wire and spray paint it a bold color. I have a very playful backyard and I’m a big fan of spray paint. You can completely change the look of any inexpensive accessory with a single coat of paint. There are plenty of pet prints available, as well as photos and paintings of your own, but how about something different? I saw this great idea online, so I can’t take credit for it. They used metal cutouts of cats in different positions, mounted them about three inches off the wall and then backlit them. The lights were hard-wired to the wall, but the same could be done with battery operated lights. Wall galleries are one of my favorite things to do. I like to use different types of artwork, add shelves and use rub-on wall words. It doesn’t have to be a focal wall but that odd wall you’ve always wondered what to do with. I met a gal who decorated her powder bath with dog prints. They were different breeds, styles of art, framed and canvas. She created a wallpaper effect by hanging

them floor-to-ceiling. The funny thing is that she didn’t have a dog, she just enjoyed looking at them. Not everything has to be pet obvious, you can have subtle touches. If you have birds, you could decorate with simple bird cages. Have a couple toss pillows with pet sayings instead of images. Use some unusual accessories that are inspired by pet shapes versus being immediately identifiable. I found a set of funky, abstract, wood carved birds in a thrift store. You don’t know what kind of birds they are, but that they’re still birds. There’s nothing that can’t be customized with a pet theme. is a rescue organization committed to helping the pets in our community. Their therapy dogs bring smiles to residents in nursing homes and hospice centers. It seemed like a natural progression to use therapy dogs in schools to help children with Autism and behavioral problems.

They started a program called Therapy Dogs go to School. Currently they go into five schools. It has been very successful; the children had amazing accomplishments working with the therapy dogs. One major breakthrough was with an Autistic boy who in the beginning was unable to be touched and didn’t want to touch anyone. By the end of the school year he was able to put his hands on the dog. It was exciting for the teachers and volunteers to see the great progress that the therapy program made for him. They plan to expand their program to include additional schools. n the reptile world you have a lot of choices as a pet. Some make great pets. Some don’t. But when it comes to ease in care, handling and just an all around great reptile pet, nothing compares to a Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragons are part of the Agama family of lizards. This family includes such lizards as Water Dragons, Uromastyx and Frilled Lizards. Bearded Dragons are native to Australia and were first imported into the United States in the 1990’s. They quickly became super popular and soon replaced the Green Iguana as the #1 pet lizard. Housing should consist of a 40 gallon or larger enclosure. Babies can be housed in smaller terrarium until they grow large enough to use a larger enclosure. Place bedding into the enclosure. I don’t recommend sand, as there have been cases of Dragons eating it on accident and becoming impacted. I do like Orchid bark and ground coconut core. I have rarely ever seen impaction using these substrates. Artificial turf or even newspaper also works well. You’ll need a nice sized water bowl and food bowl. For heat and light you have many choices, but the main two issues are heat and UV lighting. You can use a heat emitter, spot heat lamps or a mercury vapor lamp. If using a mercury vapor lamp then no other lighting is needed. The main need is a hot spot of about 120 degrees and a high UV output to simulate the sun’s rays. My preferred set up is to place a mercury vapor lamp at one end of the enclosure and run a florecent lamp across the top of the enclosure. If your home gets below 65 degrees at night, then a nocturnal heat lamp that gives a hot spot of 75 degrees would also be suggested for night heat. The other lamps can be turned on and off in 12 hour cycles. Dragons like to climb, so provide some nice sturdy branches for them to sit on and to bask. Place one branch under the heat lamp, making sure there are other branches for the dragon to navigate to when it wants less heat. You can add 40

all kinds of furniture and even plastic plants if desired. I feel a hide box is not needed, but adding one will not hurt at all. Bearded Dragons eat almost anything. In captivity they will take almost any insect such as crickets, roaches, horned worms, meal worms and wax worms. They are omnivores, so they will also relish leafy greens, mixed veggies and flowers. Be aware that they will eat almost anything. Take care not to let them come in contact with toxic plants. These guys are best housed alone. Babies tend to nip off each others tails and toes. Adult males will fight each other sometimes. Males will breed females to death if given the chance. If you do wish to have two dragons in one enclosure, I would suggest a couple of females since they tend to ignore each other. If you plan on housing two or more, a larger enclosure is required. I would suggest a minimum of 60 gallons for two adults. But bigger is always better. Bearded Dragons come in a variety of colors and patterns in captivity. It seems that a new color or pattern morph pops up every year. They are calm, easy to care for and appear to be very social with humans. Their average life span is approx. 8 years. They rarely, if ever bite and almost never run away. All in all, the perfect pet.

Although this is a warm weather dwelling animal, do not take your Bearded Dragon outside in the Las Vegas heat! In direct sunlight at 90 degrees death will come from overheating in about 10 minutes. Keep them inside and enjoy them.

Strong-Willed CAT

e love the cats that share our homes and our hearts. It is estimated that nearly 35% of all households in the United States have one or more cats. Yet in spite of our love affair with them we often experience disharmony and stress in our relationships with them. I’ve read a number of articles about “naughty” or “bad” cats and what to do if your cat is naughty, or how to deal with a disobedient cat. The most helpful for me was how to live with a strong-willed cat. Advice is available for parents of strongwilled children but what about strong-willed cats? Personally, I adopted a kitten named Rowdy and it took me almost a year before I realized I was dealing with a charming and delightful yet strong-willed cat. The strong-willed cat is dominant and persistent; they dictate the rules, push the boundaries and set the terms of the living arrangements. They are not subtle about their wants or needs. On the flip side, they are charming, cuddly, and very loving. Most of their “naughtiness” is part of their unique personalities. Here are a few solutions that helped Rowdy and me. First, I identified the undesirable behaviors and wondered why he was doing them, what did he need. One example: my desk was off limits to him yet he persistently jumped on it and raced across the top until everything scattered or landed on the floor. He pushed the limits until I finally put him outside the office and shut the door. Clearly neither of us was happy with this arrangement. I finally accepted that his preferred place was the desk. We reached a win/win solution. His need was to be near me and my need was to see the computer screen. Now I allow him on the desk when he lies “down” so I can see the screen. 42

He enjoys being with me and I can see the screen and do my work. Occasionally he gets antsy and shuffles too many papers, guards the keypad or knocks too many items off the desk. Then I put him outside the office in “time out” for about three minutes before letting him back into the office. We cuddle for a few moments and he then jumps up on the desk to assume his usual position. Works for us! Second, I questioned if I was contributing to his “naughtiness” by rewarding undesirable behaviors. For example, I’m an early riser but often Rowdy wanted me up before the alarm rang. One of his “naughty” wake-up behaviors was his flying leap and belly landing on mom. Another was knocking things off the shelves. One morning I awoke to a huge crash and a large planter was scattered all over the bedroom floor. His wake up calls worked! Mom got up and Rowdy got his “reward” for naughty behaviors but mom wasn’t happy with her early wake-up calls. Now if he is “naughty” I get up and put him out of the bedroom and shut the door. I let him in when the alarm goes off. He now associates the alarm clock with mom’s waking up. Some mornings I chuckle as I see him pawing the alarm clock as if he trying to get it to ring. Mornings are calmer for both of us. These simple solutions are working for us. It is important to accept typical cat behavior, recognize your cat’s distinctive personality traits and seek to find creative solutions that work for both of you. Some behavioral issues, however, are more serious and the best solution is to contact your veterinarian or consult with a pet behavior specialist.

Paws 4 Love Pet Rescue Started in early 2009, Paws 4 Love Pet Rescue, a cat and kitten rescue organization is committed to creating a better life for homeless cats and kittens. It is dedicated to assisting abused, neglected, and abandoned cats by rescuing, providing medical care and re-homing them. The cats live with foster volunteers while waiting for their forever family to adopt them. Shelter and care is provided for each one until they are adopted. Hey Kids! What animal books have you read lately that made

you laugh or smile? Maybe those books helped you see caterpillars, or frogs and toads, or elephants, or even pigeons a little differently! How about that cute cat that’s a chihuahua wanna-be? Here’s a quick quiz. • How are Snoopy and Garfield alike? • How about Black Beauty, too? If you say they were pets, you’re right. These pets taught their owners (and us) so much. Sometimes we laughed and other times we cried. As we study and appreciate the lessons from animals in books and those in our own homes, we learn to respect, care for, and show compassion. We grow to treasure animals and other people!

LEMON-FILLED CUPCAKE LESSON One Friday in November, a little person was bursting with birthday glee. Dodging snowflakes while scurrying home, the child anticipated a first birthday sleep-over to be held that evening. That child took an afternoon nap each day after school and this special day would be no exception. Her black velvet cat was scooped up as usual for a quick, snuggly, warm snooze. When the little person woke to her mom’s distressed calls, she ran to find out what was the commotion. A trail of home-made lemon-filled cupcake crumbs and powered-sugar led from birthday preparations to the (no longer napping) cat hiding in the shadows under a table. Party plans were crumpling, literally. Fortunately, there were untouched cupcakes on the kitchen counter. That was the day I decided to train my cat! That tough situation produced a lesson that wouldn’t be forgotten.

Here’s pet what my e taught m that day:

• Cats will eat Lemon Cupcakes! • What we do (or fail to do) has consequences. • With ownership comes responsibility. • Pets are great teachers… even if one experience is not good.

THE END OF THE STORY After being taught a lesson the hard way that day, my cat did get food, water, and training on a regular schedule. Our relationship did deepen and I learned the joy of caring for a pet, whose memory I still treasure 50 years later.

Pet Safety Tips NO SWEETS. Your dog or cat may beg for some Halloween candy but remember that chocolate is harmful in any amount. Be careful about diet candies - the ingredient Xylitol is in many sugar-free treats and is a serious danger for pets. Another popular Halloween treat to avoid for pets is raisins. CANDY WRAPPERS, such as tin foil and plastic, can get stuck in your pet’s digestive track and make them ill. BE CAREFUL ABOUT CANDLES AND LIGHTED JACK-O LANTERNS. They can easily be

knocked over by a swinging dog’s tail or by a curious cat.

KEEP YOUR PETS INDOORS ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT. Animals are at risk for cruel treatment by Halloween pranksters. Spooked pets can get lost. Microchip and tag them in case they get out. COSTUMES ARE OPTIONAL - If your dog or cat doesn’t want to wear a costume, don’t force the issue. A costume should never confine, constrain or aggravate your pet. Watch for loose parts and chewing hazards. BE CAREFUL OF GLOW STICKS. Great for child safety but they pose hazards for pets. They contain DBP, a chemical though considered low in toxicity some studies have shown that it causes problems and organ damage in younger pets. The inner glass vial and plastic casing create other complications such as choking.

Non-Profit Organization Spotlight Forget Me Not Animal Sanctuary of Las Vegas,

started in January 2016, is an organization whose mission is to provide an environment of love, care and compassion to the less fortunate animals in our city. Their focus is on animals that are homeless, those with special needs and those that are on death row in shelters. They are a foster-based organization which helps many types of animals including cats, dogs, chickens, reptiles, and rabbits. They actively participate in the spaying and neutering of strays and rescues to reduce the number of euthanized animals due to overpopulation. They have done rescue missions of dogs in need in other countries and plan to continue that rescue work.
