It is always a privilege and a joy to publish each issue but this is another meaningful milestone for us. Our premiere issue was September/October 2011 so this issue is the beginning of our 9th year. HIKES ALONG LAKE MEAD’S NORTHSHORE ROAD F av

Fall In The Desert signifies a break from the heat and time to get

outdoors. One of the best places to get outdoors and enjoy nature is at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Located just to the east of Las Vegas, this national park provides a variety of landscapes, beautiful vistas, and hiking opportunities. Here are a few hikes located on Lake Mead’s Northshore Road. The road can be accessed from Henderson via Lake Mead Parkway. Turn left onto Northshore road from Lake Mead, 1/3 of a mile after the fee station. Northshore road can also be accessed via Lake Mead Blvd on the east side of town. The road is located approximately 2 miles after the fee station.

WETLANDS TRAIL

Located at mile 1.2, this trail overlooks the Las Vegas Wash as it flows underneath Lake Las Vegas and out to Lake Mead. The trail is a 1 ¼ mile loop.

NORTHSHORE SUMMIT TRAIL

This trail is so short, it is hard to call it a hike but the views are spectacular! Located at mile 20.5, park in the parking area located on the left. From there follow the trail 0.25 miles up to a small saddle overlooking the Muddy Mountains, the Bowl of Fire and beyond.

REDSTONE TRAIL

Gracie Meeko A unique place to take visitors when your dog is tagging along on the trip, this area has red sandstone formations that create a wonderful backdrop and are fun to hike around. The parking area is located at mile 27 on Northshore road. While there is a designated trail that is 1/2 mile long, there are plenty of areas to explore.

Other hikes to check out in this area are the Northshore Summit trail, the Rogers Spring Trail and St. Thomas.

We had just lost our American Bulldog, Zestie. She developed a tumor on her spleen and it was time to let her go. Even though other dogs were in the house, our home and hearts were empty. The following weekend my wife, Lynn, and I took a ride to a local shelter in search of a Boxer. As we looked them over they all had signs on their pens that they had already been adopted. There was only one run left to check. When we got there, there she was, Cali, a white boxer with big sad brown eyes, black polka dots on her skin and a very timid personality. She wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but she looked so sad, I just had to visit with her for a while. I asked the attendant if we could visit. He retrieved a leash and brought Cali out of her run. He placed the two of us in a pen and I sat petting her and softly speaking to her. She looked at me, reached over and gave me a very gentle kiss on the cheek. It was magic! I knew she had found her new home and family. Cali is no longer timid, but she is both spoiled and playful. She greets me every morning when I wake up and puts me to bed at night. In the morning, she checks to see if I’m awake by gently walking on the bed, careful not to step on me. When I attempt to make the bed she helps by pouncing on the blankets so I can’t pull them up over the pillows. She’s a giant puppy at heart and shares my oversized recliner with me, while she tries to smother me with kisses. When I first met Cali at the shelter, I didn’t think she was going to be the one to steal my heart, but she certainly has done so.

Puppy Mill Awareness Month is

ow many of us can resist that adorable puppy in the pet store? The sad reality is that those playful bundles of joy belie the miserable existence of the parents left behind at the puppy mills (mass breeding operations), forced to crank out litter after litter of retail pets until their broken bodies are no longer useful. Conditions at these facilities have routinely been exposed via raids and undercover investigations, showing animals forced to live in squalor, overcrowding, noisy and stenchfilled environments. Often, they are warehoused in the dark or outside year-round in all elements with inadequate shelter. Veterinary care is doubtful so these animals are likely to suffer from infections, disease, cataracts, corneal ulcers, rotted teeth, deformed limbs, urine-scalded paws, and feces-matted fur. They lack proper nutrition and clean water; and they typically don’t receive exercise and enrichment. We know that most will never belong to a family who will give them the love and attention they crave and so dearly deserve. According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), there are about 10,000 puppy mills in America where profit counts more than the well-being of dogs. That number doesn’t include unlicensed backyard breeders. While the United States of Agriculture (USDA) licenses a fraction of all kennels, which submit to annual inspections and standard-of-care regulations, they admit that it is impossible to monitor all facilities, especially those on the Internet. It’s estimated that approximately half of the two million puppy mill dogs are sold in stores, with the rest being trafficked online and through classified ads. What about the heartbreak of unsuspecting consumers who have purchased a pet that was discovered to be ill? This is a common occurrence for those pets acquired from pet stores, illegal breeders, and many backyard breeders. Despite money-back guarantees from pet stores and illegal breeders, there is no way to compensate an aching heart when that new pet is found to be seriously ill or dies. 10

Furthermore, there is not always a guarantee of a pet’s breed. In 2017, Inside Edition investigated the DNA of puppies sold in pet stores, and found that some are not even close to the breed advertised. Meanwhile, beautiful, potentially wonderful pets of all breeds are dying or languishing in shelters/rescues while consumers continue to subsidize the torment at puppy mill facilities. While efforts are succeeding at bringing about change, the consumer has the ultimate power and ability to shut down puppy mill operations and help drive illegal breeders out of business by depriving them of our business. Some of the initiatives are state and federal legislation and regulation, litigation against stores by animal welfare groups/private citizens, persuading/assisting pet stores to transition to offering only shelter animals for adoption, and educating consumers. As to the illegal breeders, it’s important to recognize red flags before making a purchase. If someone refuses to allow access to their facility or they suggest meeting in a parking lot or other off-premise location, that’s a good indication that they are not operating legitimately. Bottom line, adopting from shelters and rescues is one way to ensure we’re not supporting animal cruelty.

Less Adoptable Pets and How You Can Help Them By: Rachel Sheppard

September 21-27th is Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week. Petfinder.com established this annual event in 2009. The purpose of this week is to recognize, and hopefully find homes for, those pets who are seen as “less adoptable”.

WHAT MAKES A PET “LESS ADOPTABLE”?

Pets that are considered by society as “less adoptable” are just as loving, sweet, and kind as all of the other pets. However, they aren’t blessed with the natural poster child adoptability as the other pets in the shelter. Many people probably don’t realize that certain types of pets have a harder time finding their forever home, but Petfinder.com discovered that less adoptable pets spend an average of 48 weeks on Petfinder.com where other pets spend about 12.5 weeks. This week is less about the beautiful puppy that with undoubtedly get a home and more about the underdogs and cats in the shelters and rescues throughout the U.S.

Here are some examples of pets who are considered “less adoptable” and would love to make this week the week they find their forever home.

Black Dogs and Black Cats: There are several theories behind the phenomenon that is Black Dog Syndrome (which also

applies to cats). Petfinder.com states that Black Dog Syndrome could be due to the following factors; the size of the dog, dimly lit kennels, unclear facial features, and negative portrayals of black pets in books and media. No matter what theory you subscribe to, research supports that black dogs and cats have a difficult time getting adopted. Therefore, this is the week to go down to the shelter and add a black dog or cat to your family!

Senior Pets: For the life of me, I can’t figure out why senior pets are considered less adoptable. Senior pets may not be able

to give you the same number of years that other pets can, but they can give you some of the best years of your life. Senior pets are already house trained and have an attainable level of energy. If you are someone who likes to do the following things; take a nap, go for a leisurely walk, sleep-in, cuddle, hang-out, or watch a movie, then a senior pet is right for you.

Special Needs Pets: Special needs pets could come in many different sizes or shapes. The term special needs may sound

intimidating to some potential pet parents, but the needs aren’t always what they seem. For example, a cat with one eye is considered special needs. However, her needs are pretty simple, she has just had some challenges in her life, but her quality of life is still great! In some cases, a special needs pet may require an experienced pet owner, so if you fit that criteria, you could provide an excellent home for a loving pet.

What can you do to improve the likelihood that these pets will get a home? • Share their photos on social media. Social media has helped many pets find their forever homes in recent years. Use your online social presence to bring awareness to the adoptability of black dogs and cats, seniors pets, and special needs pets. • Educate your friends and family. Knowledge is power, so share it! Tell people about black dog syndrome and the benefits of having a senior or special needs pet by your side! • Share your story! If you have shared your life with a black pet, a special needs pet or a senior pet, share your story. Sharing positive stories can help change the stigma associated with these categories of pets. My hope is that 10-20 years from now these categories are no longer considered “less adoptable”. FLOORING Ê Most people are installing hard surfaces and

using area rugs as they’re easier to clean than carpet. With area rugs, consider something that is moderately priced and upgrade your pad to make it cushier for you. Buying something expensive may end up aggravating you with possible slobber and accidents. I’d advise against any rugs with fringe as it will most likely be chewed off. As well as looped pile rugs as you run the risk of their nails snagging it.

ACCESSORIES Ê Accessories are the finishing touches

to any room like a pearl necklace is for a basic black dress. But with pets, it’s important where you place them and what they’re made of. Depending on your pet and how active they are playing in the house, you might not want any breakables or sentimental items within the reach of their tails and paws. Instead display them on wall shelves, a built-in or curio cabinet. If you have room for a wall gallery, incorporate shelves for accessories with the wall art. Be careful with pillows and throws that have tassels and fringe. They’re an invitation to chew on and can become a choking hazard. Decorative cord is an attractive and safer alternative. Accessories with small intricate details and openings are dust and pet hair catchers. We already have plenty of Vegas dust, but we all know that pets generate even more with doors being opened and closed more often. Accessories that can easily be washed in the sink are the best choices.

BEDDING Ê Don’t you just want those pretty dressed beds you see in magazines? But most are not meant for a home with pets. Many of us let our pets get on our beds and even sleep with us. Heck, to be honest, sometimes it seems they’re letting us sleep with them. So, we need to think how to keep our bedding clean. My first suggestion is to use washable bedding. I like to use duvet covers and quilts that I can throw in the washer. If you can’t find something washable, have a duvet made from sheets. I’ve done these many times for my clients. 14

If your fur-babies like to rub along the bed or play hide and seek underneath, here are two suggestions. First, put a fitted sheet on your box spring to keep it clean. Works great since it can be washed, which is better than steam cleaning the box spring. Second, if you have a bed skirt, put a fitted sheet on your box spring and have a seamstress add Velcro to the bed skirt and the fitted sheet, making it a breeze to take off and clean.

WINDOW TREATMENTS Ê More people are

moving away from fabric treatments to shutters, because of the upkeep in our dusty environment. If you still want that extra colorful layer, be mindful when selecting the fabric and style. If you’re going to do drapery panels, stay away from hard to clean fabrics, such as linen, silk or delicate sheers. Machine washable fabrics are best as dry cleaning gets expensive. Although not as popular anymore but still being made, are drapery panels that puddle on the floor, which is not great for a pet-friendly home. The fabric on the floor is an open invitation for your pet to cozy up or make into a chew toy. Instead, have them at least an inch off the floor. I had a client that had drapery panels right by her doggie door, so we had clear vinyl sewn onto the bottom 12 inches. It was in the corner, so you didn’t even notice it.

UPHOLSTERYÊ We all have to sit somewhere, including

Fido. I know not everyone lets their pets on the sofa, but they still walk by it. For fabrics consider ultra-suede, my favorite go-to pet-friendly fabric. If you don’t like the look of ultra-suede, there’s faux or real leather. With leather know that it will get scratched from their nails, so you’re best to consider the weathered look. One fabric to stay away from is any type of weave. Fur loves to get in between the fibers, is difficult to get out, and feels like a pin sticking you. I was reupholstering a chair and ottoman and fell in love with a fabric with a light background. The ottoman happens to be in the girl’s running path from the bedroom to the backyard, so I had to come up with a solution to keep the ottoman clean. To let me enjoy my fabric and keep it clean, I had a clear slipcover made.

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN – BY GARTH STEIN –

I watched the trailer for the movie The Art of Racing in the Rain because Milo Ventimiglia is one of my favorite actors. As soon as I saw Milo’s performance, I was hooked and I had to know more. After reading a brief summary I knew instantly that I wanted to read the book. The story is narrated by Enzo and the introduction begins at the end of his life. Enzo is a lab-poodle, though he’ll convince you he was more terrier than poodle. He was one of Denny’s best friends. Life with Denny and his family was rich and full of true friendship and companionship with lots of laughter (the zebra) and true love. Enzo was loyal and devoted to Denny and his family. Their story includes triumph, defeat, success, failure, loss, heartbreak, death and acceptance. Denny shared a quote after watching a tape of one of his races with his wife. The quote was told to him by Gabriel Flouret, a Formula One Race Car Driver when they were at a driving school in Europe. “That which you manifest is before you.” This single sentence, these few words were like a rain drop of knowledge in the storm of uncertainty which we call life. Throughout the book, Enzo sees himself being reincarnated as a man in his next life. This belief manifests itself through all the uncertainties and unexpected events life throws at him and his family. His life truly ends where it began. I could not love this book more. I laughed, I cried a lot, was upset, angry and inspired. The way Garth wrote the book from Enzo’s perspective was a nice change and honestly could not have been told any other way. I highly recommend this for everyone. If you believe that our dogs and even cats understand more than we will ever know; this is the book for you.

This day was established to honor our pets both past and present and to recognize the important roles they play in our lives. This is a good day to reflect on the pets you have loved and lost. Coping with the loss of a pet is very difficult. For our 5th year anniversary issue (Sept Oct 2016) we included a piece called Remembering the Pets Who Inspired LVPSM - Pets We’ve Loved and Lost. It was difficult to write but it was our way of honoring the roles they played in our lives.

9 Steps for Finding a Lost Pet ~ By Sheryl Green ~

Losing a pet is every fur parents worst nightmare. If your four-legged child has gotten loose or snuck out, reacting quickly and calmly will give you the best chance of having them returned without a single whisker harmed. Here are nine steps to bring your baby home:

Canvas the neighborhood as soon as you notice that your pet is missing. Enlist family, friends, and neighbors to help. This can be a traumatic experience for your pet and they will likely be frightened. Call the animal’s name repeatedly and have treats and a leash or carrier on hand to entice your baby over. File a lost pet report with the local animal shelters. Visit the shelters each day and check online to see if your baby has been found and brought in. You can search The Animal Foundation online at: https://animalfoundation.com/get-pethelp/lost-found-pets and Henderson Animal Shelter at www. cityofhenderson.com/animal-control/lost-and-found. If your pet is micro-chipped and registered with a service like Home-Again or 24PetWatch, notify them immediately so they can send out an alert to pet lovers in your neighborhood. Make missing pet posters and hang them around your neighborhood. Place them on mailboxes, street signs, in grocery stores, the library, etc. Include breed, color, weight, sex, age, and any special markings. If possible, leave one identifying characteristic off of the flier. When someone finds your pet, ask them to describe it so you know they’ve got the right one. Make sure to include your contact information and any special instructions about approaching your baby. You can offer a reward, but it’s best not to list the amount on the poster.

Visit www.petharbor.com and search by city. This will allow you to check with local animal rescues that may have found your pet and are keeping him or her safe until you can be reunited. Don’t panic and never give up. Pets have been returned to their families months, even years later.

These steps can help bring your baby home, but the best time to take action is before your pet gets lost.

Most importantly, get your pet MICRO-CHIPPED.

For a minimal amount of money, and a small amount of discomfort to your baby, you can ensure that if Fido ever gets out and is found, he will be returned to you within two shakes of a dog’s tail.

- Always make sure that you have a RECENT PHOTO of your baby.

Contact veterinary clinics throughout the valley to see if anyone has brought in an injured or stray animal. Since vets can scan for micro-chips, a rescuer may bring your pet there even if they are not injured.

Utilize the power of social media. Include your flier on Facebook, Twitter, and any other sites you use. Ask friends to share the post so it reaches an even wider audience.

Place a few pieces of worn clothing outside your house. If your pup is still in the neighborhood, he may be able to pick up on your smell and follow it home.

Genetic Spinal Disorders In Dogs By Dr. Corinna Gorgon, DVM • Town Center Animal Hospital • www.towncentervet.com

Getting a new puppy can be a mixture of a lot of different emotions, primarily those of excitement and happiness! Learning about the genetics of your puppy can be an important step in this process. There can be a variety of different genetic spinal disorders for owners to know about depending on what breed of puppy you get. These disorders range from those commonly seen to incredibly rare. Things to look out for at home include incoordination, awkward posture, unusual body conformation or urinary and/or fecal incontinence. If you see any of these, you should bring your puppy to the vet. This article will talk about two more well known genetic diseases, Degenerative Myelopathy and Wobblers syndrome and another disease that is fortunately incredibly rare, Spinal Dysraphism in Weimaraners.

DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY OF DOGS: This is a slow and progressive degeneration of the nerves that affect the spinal cord. Affected dogs are usually 8 years or older and veterinarians most commonly see this disorder in German Shepherds, Corgis, Boxers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, but other breeds may be affected as well. Degenerative myelopathy is caused by a mutation in a specific gene and is an inherited genetic disorder, meaning that it gets passed on from generation to generation. The first clinical signs an owner may notice is a lack of coordination when walking and sometimes weakness of the back legs, which is why often times this disorder gets confused with osteoarthritis. As the disorder progresses, owners may start to notice an inability to walk on all 4 legs or wanting to continuously lay down because it is too hard for them to get up. Diagnosis is made by MRI and by looking at the spinal fluid to rule out other diseases. There is also a DNA test available to test for the specific gene that causes this mutation. There is no specific treatment for this disorder and although dogs can live with this disease for years, because of its progressive nature, most dogs ultimately have to be humanely euthanized.

CAUDAL CERVICAL SPONDYLOMYELOPATHY (WOBBLERS): This is a spinal disorder that causes neurological deficits such as an uncoordinated walk or an inability to walk. It is most commonly seen in Dobermans 2 years and older, and affected dogs may hold their neck down in pain from compression of the vertebrae. Diagnosis is by radiographs and an MRI or CT scan. Treatment is medical management or surgery. 24

SPINAL DYSRAPHISM IN WEIMARANER DOGS: Spinal dysraphism in Weimaraners is a rare genetic disorder that causes neurological signs and is caused by a mutation in a gene that is present at birth. It is only seen in approximately 1.5% of Weimaraners. Clinical signs include puppies having difficulty beginning to walk and an uncoordinated walk called “bunny hopping”. The disorder is not painful and it does not progress during the life of an affected dog. Diagnosis is made based on examination by your veterinarian, an MRI, and radiographs. There is no treatment for this disorder but most dogs live a completely normal life. Veterinarians rely on you as an owner to pick up on the more subtle signs of illness at home. It is so important to bring your puppy into your veterinarian to catch early signs of what could be a genetic disorder. It is also important to get your puppies from reliable sources who test for breed specific disorders.

If you want to enjoy walks around the block, at the park or participate in social outings with your dog, it’s worth the time and commitment it takes to train your dog to walk politely on leash. Every time you allow your dog to move forward when he pulls, you teach him that dragging you down the street gets him where he wants to go. And the longer he’s been practicing this, the more committed to training you will have to be.

➠ HOW TO GET STARTED

Work in collaboration with your training partner and make training FUN!

pattern, ask your dog for eye contact, click and treat when behavior is performed correctly. Repeat a few times. If behavior is not performed correctly, back up and work on that behavior alone with little movement. Once behavior is solid, start to work a short straight pattern. Burn off some of your dog’s energy before working on your leash training skills. Play a little fetch, go for a swim or play a little Nose Work. Once your dog is walking nicely with you and is able to move forward, stop, change directions, you will want to add a cue, such as “let’s walk” for this behavior. It’s equally important to cue him to “go sniff” when he has permission to move away from you on a loose leash to read the pee-mail. Dogs experience their world through olfaction, they want to sniff and should be given an opportunity to explore. Plan an occasional Sniffari Walk for your dog! On this adventure walk, put your dog on a long lead in an open area and encourage him to explore a natural environment without being asked to check in or offer behaviors.

This is only a test — of skill and agility. On Saturday, October 5th, 50 police officers and their four-legged partners will converge upon Lake Las Vegas for the annual Las Vegas Metro K-9 trials. This is the third year the event will be held in the community. “On Saturday, they do a decoy search. They do a building search looking for pretend bad guys, and that’s all graded on tactics and time,” said Las Vegas Metro K9 Officer Sean Malia.

EMERGENCY PLANNING For You & Your Pets

Emergencies can strike at any time, day or night. Earthquakes, floods, house fires, and gas leaks are all potential disasters that can require you to immediately evacuate your home. With little or no warning, you may be forced to leave your home with very little time to decide what to take with you. Of course, getting your family and pets out of the house is the first priority, but what else should you take if you can? The best time to decide that is before an emergency occurs. Be prepared ahead of time by making a family emergency plan that includes the well-being of your pets. As a part of your emergency plan, it is important to remember important documents that your family may have difficulty replacing if they were destroyed. If you keep important family documents in your home (birth certificates, passports, insurance policies, house deeds), keep them in a brightly colored folder that would be easy to recognize and take with you in case of emergency. Similarly, prepare a folder for your pet(s) that includes health and vaccination records and recent photos of each pet. Include veterinarian contact information in addition to pet-friendly hotels and shelters in your area. Made sure everyone in your family knows where the folders are kept. Evacuating your home with the added responsibility of pets may seem overwhelming. Luckily, there are many things you can do to prepare them for an emergency before it occurs. For starters, ensure that your pet wears current identification at all times that includes your name, rabies tag, and your cell phone number. If your pet is microchipped, make sure the information on file is also up to date. It is also a good idea to invest in a carrier for each of your animals. In an emergency situation, having the ability to confine your pet in a carrier will help ensure their safety and comfort. Pet carriers will make them easier to transport and will be extremely helpful if you need to stay in a hotel or possibly a shelter. For added safety, write your name and cell phone number on each of your pet carriers. If you get separated from your pets, it will help emergency workers easily access your contact information without removing the animals from their carriers.

As a final step in your emergency pet-preparation, gather all of the supplies you will need for your pets and create a “go bag” which you can easily grab in a hurry. Some recommended items to include are:

Horses As Companions Recently I overheard a conversation and heard this comment: “Why would anyone ever keep a horse they can’t ride”? To me it was more of an opinion rather than a question. A brief response to the “question” might be interesting.

A companion only horse is one that for a variety of reasons cannot be ridden. What is the value of having a horse that you can’t ride? Many people keep horses simply as pets and lovingly call them their “pasture pets”. Equine-assisted therapy is very valuable yet only a few actually involve riding. The healing comes primarily from the relationship between horse and client. Being with them is therapeutic - grooming, feeding, and caring for them helps reduce stress, lower blood pressure and has many physical benefits.

One suggestion is to take your horse for a walk and explore new areas. Another is to just be with them; sit in their pasture – perhaps use the time to journal or read a book. Apparently horses enjoy music especially bagpipe, cello and flute music. You can enjoy music together. Get creative – the possibilities are endless. Horse ownership is not for everyone but if you have the resources consider opening your heart and pasture to a “pasture pet” or companion only horse!

Connecting with horses can be spiritually and emotionally rewarding. One time as I groomed a horse that had been a trail horse I noticed visible scars. I sensed they came from whippings. Gently rubbing those areas I spoke softly, said I understood and shared briefly my pain, my invisible scars. He sighed and leaned gently into me. It felt as if we were supporting each other. The bond was incredible. As with any pet, responsible pet horse ownership means learning about all the requirements involved with caring for a horse. They require land to graze and run, a safe shelter, and resources for food and vet bills. They also require lots of time – they need to be groomed, stalls need to be cleaned. Beyond the basics they need time and attention; horses need plenty of stimulation, new adventures and exercise.

She has 100 days to train the horse for the Las Vegas TIP Challenge which will be held in Las Vegas for the first time on October 31 to November 2nd at Horseman Park. The TIP (Trainer Incentive Program) Challenge was created by the Mustang Heritage Foundation as part of their mission to place mustangs and burros in adoptive homes.

Getting to Know Our Fascinating Felines a Little Better….. BREEDS COLORS PATTERNS

Cats are so popular and yet there is so

much we don’t know about them. For example, if someone asks you what kind of cat do you have how do you respond? I have two very different cats in size, personality and color. In spite of these differences their adoption papers list them both as Domestic Shorthair. Interestingly only about five percent of cats are “purebred” or pedigreed. That means that 95 percent of cats are considered domestic (a term used to describe a cat that does not belong to a breed) and are either shorthair or longhair depending on hair length. A fun way to discover more about our own fur baby is to look at the various breeds to see which ones our cat “looks and acts” like the most. For starters here are three cat breeds that are fairly well known: The Maine Coon is one of the largest domesticated cats; they are often called the “gentle giants” of the cat world. They’re loving and intelligent and are popular pets. The term Maine Coon Mix means that the cat looks and acts like one without any proof or documentation. Ragdolls are people lovers. One characteristic is their tendency for flopping especially when you pick them up. They love to cuddle and play. They fit in the category of breeds that are considered “doglike” since they can be trained to fetch and have other doglike behaviors. The American Shorthair cat is a very popular breed. They were bred originally for catching mice and other rodents and were considered working cats. They are easy going and love to play but don’t require constant attention. They are purebreds but are often confused with domestic or mixed-breed cats.

Cats are also described by their colors and color patterns; all cats come in a wonderful variety of colors and patterns. The three basic colors are black, white, red (usually considered orange or “ginger”), or a combination/pattern or mixture of these colors. Bicolored cats include one color combined with white such as orange and white or gray and white. Tuxedo cats are black with white patches on the chin, stomach, chest and paws. Black and white cats without this color pattern are considered bi-colored. Other familiar color patterns are the tabbies or tigers, calicos, and tortoiseshells AKA “torties”. DNA testing for cats is becoming a popular way to find out more about the fascinating felines who share our hearts and homes. A DNA test could find out what kind of breeds make up our cat’s genome (gene base), help determine if our cat is at risk for a genetic disorder; possibly identify traits linked to health conditions, and offer insight into our cat’s personality and unique traits. Whether we have a purebred, a mixed breed, or a delightful “domestic” it is the love connection between us that is important. Deepening our knowledge and awareness of the complexity of the cat world adds greater depth to the bond between us and our cats.

Mission: Possible 2020 In 2015 the Animal Foundation announced its Mission: Possible 2020 campaign with a goal to reach zero euthanasia of all healthy and treatable animals who enter their care by the end of the year 2020. One important milestone in accomplishing this goal was the opening of the Engelstad Family Adoption Center in February. It was planned and designed using the best practices in animal shelter care. It has private meet and greet areas where visitors can get to know their potential companions in a more intimate and interactive environment. There are communal cat rooms and one even has a tree in the center! It provides safe and comfortable housing for cats, other small animals, birds and reptiles. In addition to the new adoption center, many new programs were developed such as innovative outreach and education efforts to help address pet overpopulation, a Community Cats program to decrease the area’s homeless cat population, and a Pets for Life (PFL) program that reaches out to underserved communities to offer free pet care resources, services and information. The Keeping Every Person & Pet Together (KEPPT) program is helping to keep pets at home and out of the shelter. They experienced a 75% success rate with KEPPT -- out of 379 appointments for surrender they had 285 successful interventions!

At the same time our adoptions are up, our intakes are also up this year. When fully complete, the new and improved facilities will allow The Animal Foundation to increase its capacity to save more lives in a humane and healthy way.
