I recently reread a story called The Hidden Gold. It’s been shared in a variety of ways and often in the context of personal growth. This time it had a different meaning for me:

In Bangkok, Thailand, there is a golden Buddha with an interesting history. Built in the 1400’s, it was revered for hundreds of years. In mid-1700 the monks heard that the monastery was going to be invaded. To protect this valuable and sacred statue the monks covered it with plaster and clay. For hundreds of years no one knew the true value of this popular yet ordinary-looking statue. During the relocation of the monastery in 1957, a monk noticed a large crack in the clay. Using a hammer and chisel he chipped away at the clay exterior and discovered that the statue was made of solid gold. Approximate value today – 250 million dollars.

If you’ve never been to a pet event, you’re missing out! Whether put on by a specific community, a radio station, or a rescue group, these events are fun-filled and fur-filled! Some of the benefits include:

With many people going back to working outside of the home, your fur baby is likely missing all that time together. Spend an afternoon at a pet event and give them the thrill of their week.

Of course, safety should always be your primary concern. There are a few things you need to know and prepare before you pack Fluffy’s day bag.

« KNOW YOUR DOG’S PERSONALITY (& THEIR LIMITS)

This environment is not ideal for every pet. Frightened, aggressive, or overly timid dogs may not handle the overstimulation well. Know your dog and if need be, start out with a smaller event or a short period of time and see how they handle it. If you notice any signs of fear or aggression, high-tail it out of there.

« LEASH YOUR PET

“But my dog listens to me!” Unless you are Dr. Dolittle, keep your dog on a leash. Just because you’ve got your dog under control during everyday circumstances, doesn’t mean you can control them (or any other dog) when things get heated.

« MAKE SURE YOUR PUP IS UP-TO-DATE ON VACCINES

Vaccines are an easy, inexpensive way to keep your pet healthy. When they are sniffing, licking, and sharing a water dish and a poop area, you’ll be extra glad that they are protected from common diseases.

When you live in Las Vegas, you get used to it being hot nine months out of the year. Keep an eye on your furry friend and make sure they stay hydrated, aren’t forced to walk on hot surfaces, and don’t suffer from heat stroke.

Pet events can be a wonderful experience for everyone. Prep ahead of time and you and your pup can have a beautiful day of fun and bonding.

Photographing those special moments with our pets can sometimes be difficult. Our pets can be so active and unpredictable that getting a great photo of them can be a real challenge. Sometimes we try to photograph an adorable, perfect pet moment when we think they are sleeping or oblivious to what we are doing. But as soon as we grab the camera, they miraculously wake up and scatter like the wind. Ugh!! Yes, getting great pictures of our pets can be frustrating and definitely takes practice. With a few helpful tips, it is possible to photograph our furry friends and get great pics to share with our family and friends.

Now, with the convenience of our cell phone cameras, we can take photos quickly and capture moments that we may have missed otherwise. Armed with a camera in your pocket and a few pet photography tips, you will soon be shooting wonderful photos of your furry family members.

Since our pets are much shorter than we are, it is best to get down on their level to really capture their faces and overall features. Focusing on their eyes and getting their attention with a favorite toy or an unusual noise will help peak their curiosity and may provide you with great inquisitive expressions. Focusing on the eyes will create depth and emphasize eye color. Do not be afraid to take multiple photos of anything that seems promising. (Digital film is free!) If your pet is extremely energetic, it may be best to try to run some energy out of them before shooting. A tired pet moves more slowly and can make

your photo-shoot a little easier. Photographing cats is typically a little more difficult than dogs unless your cat is a lazy couch potato (I have one of those). In general, you need to be very sneaky with cats and move MUCH faster to capture those special kitty moments.

Another important ingredient to a great photo is lighting. The perfect lighting for your photo can turn a good photo into a GREAT photo! For photographing pets, it is always best to turn your camera flash off. It can distract your pet and will not supply the type of light you need. Similarly, trying to photograph your pet in bright sunlight is difficult due to the harsh shadows and extensive glare. The best time of day to get great outdoor shots is late evening or early morning. The lighting at these times is perfect for a great, non-intrusive light source. The sunrise and sunset hours often create a golden background or a pleasant glow that will accomplish a well-lit photo with minimal glare and shadows. Another good option is to shoot some pics on a cloudy day. Overcast days provide even light that will scatter and soften the sunlight.

When using your cell phone camera, it is beneficial to thoroughly research all the features your specific camera provides. It may have many capabilities that you are totally unaware of. Exploring and learning all the photo features your camera has will help you take great photos of all types. Features like Burst (for action shots), Portrait and Time-Lapse can be very helpful when you learn how to use them correctly.

With a little practice, you will be able to shoot some memorable photos that you can share and cherish for years to come.

Pet Obesity

A LITTLE EXTRA WEIGHT IS A BIG PROBLEM.

Primary obesity is due to increased caloric intake or over feeding more than the body uses therefore increasing body fat. A common justification for over feeding is for one’s pet to have a higher quality of life, but in reality overweight and obese pets commonly have primary and secondary health issues that can lead to a decreased life span. Studies have shown that lean or optimal weight pets may live on average 1 to 2 years longer than overweight pets.

SECONDARY NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF OBESITY

Obesity affects every part of the body and thus healthy body function.

Grossly obese pets have increased frequency of traumatic and degenerative bone disorders. Overweight puppies are more likely to develop clinical signs of orthopedic disease during development and older pets having arthritis. Overweight pets have reduced activity, decreased heat tolerance, predisposing to heat stroke during hotter climates, and also can show visible signs of aging earlier than ideal weight animals.

Other health problems commonly noted include congestive heart failure, respiratory issues, Diabetes Mellitus, and increased anesthetic risk during

elective or necessary surgical procedures. Overweight cats in particular that do not eat can be predisposed to liver disease known as hepatic lipidosis leading to liver failure.

BODY CONDITION SCORING –NOT JUST THE WEIGHT

Body weight alone does not indicate whether a pet’s weight is appropriate. Body condition scoring (BCS) is a useful tool that estimates an animal’s body fat content, taking into account the breed and frame size independent of body weight such as evaluating the ribs, vertebrae, waist, and hips. Clinicians frequently use the 5 or 9-point system (1/9 emaciated, 9/9 grossly obese). Ideal BCS is a 4 to 5/9 having ribs easily palpable, with minimal fat covering. The waist is easily observed behind ribs and when viewed from above, and an abdominal tuck is apparent when viewed from the side.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

If your pet has a primary overweight problem not secondary to underlying disease/ metabolic condition your primary veterinarian will formulate a specific weight loss program. Components to a healthy weight loss program include changes in diet, using a feeding schedule, decreasing/eliminating treats, and routine exercise. Eliminating

treats does not affect daily nutrition and decreases negative effects such as vomiting and diarrhea. Substituting in vegetables such at carrots, green beans, broccoli or squash are acceptable due to lower calorie content, and higher water and fiber content for digestion. Prescription diets are also available that can be prescribed by your veterinarian after your pet has had a full physical evaluation. Using a routine schedule such as feeding twice a day compared to leaving food out will allow the amount of food one’s pet is eating to be accurately monitored, and also allows for a routine bathroom schedule. Exercise such as daily walks and interactive toys at home can help eliminate extra weight. Pets should be started with frequent short 5-10 minute walks increasing the length of the walk/jog over time if not use to exercising. Swimming is also beneficial allowing use of all the muscles without the increased weight placing more pressure on the joints.

Weight management is an important factor to your pet’s health and quality of life. Leaner pets are more active, play more and have less risk to the many secondary health issues that come with being overweight. Appropriate diet and weight management is key to ensuring that your pets have a prolonged happier and healthier life.

Over the past 5 years it has been estimated that 24% to 35% of the pet population in the United States seen by veterinarians is overweight or obese.

You’ve decided to remodel and change your flooring and paint. If you have pets, you’ll want to keep in mind what will work best for them and you. Here are some things to consider.

Always select your flooring first. Yes, there are many products to select from, but they’re still limited compared to paint colors.

CARPET: Pay extra attention to their stain resistance and durability qualities. Carpets are more comfortable and slipresistant, but for those with allergies or asthma; the dust and pet dander will wreak havoc for you as well as the longevity of your carpet if it’s not vacuumed frequently.

As far as durability, nylon is more durable and stain resistant than polyester. Although with that said, advancements in fiber construction is what will make the difference. Be sure to consult with a flooring professional to help you with your decision.

TILE: Tiles are great for pets, they’re durable and stain resistant. But you do have to consider comfort and that they’re slippery. As your pet ages, they may have problems getting up, so look at textured versus smooth finishes.

When looking at tiles get a large format, you’ll have less grout, and they look beautiful. Twelve by twenty-four has been popular for many years, but now you can find 24 x 48 and even larger.

LAMINATE: Many have moved away from laminate with the introduction of quality luxury vinyl, specifically planks. Laminate is scratch resistant and good with accidents, although accidents need to be cleaned up quickly otherwise the planks can buckle.

HARDWOOD: If a single scratch is going to send you into a tizzy, hardwood is not for you.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST FLOORING & PAINTS FOR PETS

It’s beautiful but even the hardest will scratch, it’s wood. Just as with laminate, you need to clean up accidents as soon as possible. If you want hardwood floors look at harder species such as Brazilian Cherry, Mesquite, and Mahogany and those that are hand-scraped or distressed; the scratches will blend in with the natural look of the wood.

LUXURY VINYL TILE ( LVT):

This has been the number one flooring selection for both commercial and residential. They don’t scratch easily, and are water resistant, which helps with accidents.

The plank design is the most popular as it looks like real wood without all the maintenance. For older pets, it also has grip to it so slipping is less likely.

You’ve selected your flooring so now onto paint. If you have pets, you know your walls can take a beating. Down the halls, around the corners, their rooms, and those play areas that need special attention.

I feel flat paint has no place in an animal house unless you like to paint a whole lot. Honestly, I don’t like flat paint in any home. It’s true flat paint has its advantages. Its non-reflective nature masks any surface imperfection. It’s easier to touch up but unless you invest in the more expensive washables, you just can’t wipe it down without at some point going down to the plasterboard.

Some of the other sheens to consider are eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss. Sheen refers to how much light is reflected off the painted surface as well as durability.

Eggshell gets its name from the texture and sheen of an actual eggshell. It has a slight sheen and is more washable than flat.

A satin is sometimes also called pearl, it has a slight gloss and offers more cleanability. Personally, I only use satin or eggshell as I don’t like the reflection from semi-gloss. But you do need to use high-quality paint.

Typically, semi-gloss is used in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms because they make surfaces easier to clean and are moisture resistant. Although there are eggshell and satin paints that are moisture resistant. The higher the gloss the tougher and more stain resistant the paint. So, if you have a high pet traffic area you might want to consider a semi-gloss.

With paint, use one that is low or no VOC, Volatile Organic Compound, especially if you have birds as they have a very sensitive respiratory system.

No matter what selection you make, there will always be accidents, shedding, and playful running with pets. Everyone has different tolerance levels for maintenance and comfort, you have to determine yours.

EXPLORE ANIMAL MEDITATION AND MASSAGE

A quick Google search will tell you your pets need play, training, proper nutrition, and exercise, but adding animal-led meditation and animal massage into your pet’s routine will support your pet’s emotional needs and deepen the bond you share.

Animal-Led Meditation

Meditation is not just for people; animals love it too. When we invite our animals into the meditation space, two things happen; they receive the benefits of meditation, and the bond we share grows deeper.

Animal-Led Meditation Tips

Find a quiet, comfortable place.

Be sure your pet is walked, fed, and provided outdoor time before sitting down to meditate.

Focus on your breath, taking slow deep breaths in and out through your nose.

Invite your pet to join you in this space. Simply say or think, “I invite you to join me in this meditation.”

Never force, leash, or kennel your pet to get them to meditate with you. Always allow them to move around or even leave the area.

Look at your pet through the eyes of love. Focus on your breath and the love and gratitude you feel for your pet. This is not the time to focus on what’s wrong. This is the time to focus on the perfection of your relationship.

Animal Massage

Massage is another great tool to increase the bond you share with your pet. Just touching your pet will cause your body to release oxytocin, a hormone that causes sensations of bonding and love. And while therapeutic massage should be left to professionals, there are simple techniques you can do at home.

Warm Up

Introduce your pet to massage by gently running your fingertips along your pet’s back. Use a feather-like touch. Start at the top of your pet’s head and stroke down the entire back on both sides of the spine. Do not put any pressure on your pet’s back. Do this several times.

Head Rub

Start at the top of your pet’s nose, and run your thumb over the head, going back and forth slowly.

Remember to monitor your pet’s body language during a meditation or massage session. Your pet may stretch, lean into your body, or even fall asleep. But if they seem uncomfortable or try to escape – stop. You can try again the next day.

5Ways to Turn Your Dog Into Your Copilot

Between whining like a hyena with a sinus infection and puking every 60 or so miles, I can say for certain that my last fur baby was NOT a good traveler. Fortunately, I now know that even the most nervous of fuzzy passengers can get used to car rides (and actually enjoy them). Like just about every aspect of pet parenting, the trick is to be prepared.

Dogs can make excellent driving companions if you take the time to make them comfortable. Follow these 5 steps to help your pup acclimate to road trips.

GET THEM USED TO THE CAR

Your pet’s first experience in the car doesn’t have to be while it’s moving. In fact, getting them used to the car before you put it into drive can help them feel calmer and more secure.

MAKE IT A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE

The better early travel experiences are, the better they will be for life. Bring toys, blankets, and lots of treats to show them that being in the car can be fun and stress-free.

BUCKLE THEM IN

You’ll want to secure your precious cargo with a harness or buckle them into a doggy seat. This serves three purposes. First, your dog will feel safer and, therefore, calmer. Second, you don’t want your dog trying to drive. While it’s adorable seeing a pup sitting on their owner’s lap, it is terribly unsafe. If there were an accident, the airbag would be incredibly dangerous. Even without an accident, a cute pooch in your face definitely counts as “distracted driving.” Finally, if unsecured, the pup could become a projectile during an accident. That’s no good for anyone. Just harness them in, okay?

TAKE A SHORT DRIVE

No need to drive cross-country the first time your baby steps their paws into the car. Take a quick drive around the block,

and then reward, reward, reward. Treat this trip like your dog won the Nobel Prize. Give them yummy snacks, scritchyscratchy their butt, and praise them with lots of “good boys.”

FIND A HAPPY DESTINATION

Much like their first trip doesn’t have to be long, it also doesn’t have to be fraught with stress, needle pokes, and prying fingers. Instead of going to the vet, go to the park, grab a puppuccino, head to the pet supply store for a new toy, head to the hiking trail, or just ride around town with the windows open and some relaxing tunes. My dogs enjoy Bob Marley.

Once your pup is comfy being in the car for longer periods of time, make sure you don’t push it. Pups need time to go potty, stretch their legs, and sniff their surroundings. Make frequent pit stops and reward your dog for being the amazing traveler he or she is.

And whatever you do… do not leave them in a hot car! Temps can rise quickly, and you never want to put your pup in any danger.

By following these easy steps, you can turn an anxious pup into a world traveler! Just don’t expect them to navigate, or you’ll keep ending up at the Barkery.

Watching fish swimming gracefully in a beautiful aquarium helps relieve stress. Some studies have shown that watching fish swim improves our concentration and can help children study. Before, however, running to your local pet store to buy an aquarium there are a number of considerations.

Typically the start-up costs for a freshwater aquarium are $200 and up; saltwater fish aquariums normally have higher set-up costs. Freshwater aquariums are usually recommended for beginners because they tend to be easier to maintain. Though it is tempting to start real small to keep your start-up costs low it is important to think realistically about what you ultimately want for your aquarium. Creating a proper environment for your fish is critical. Larger aquariums, though initially more expensive, are usually more “forgiving” of beginner mistakes and are conducive to long-term success.

It is helpful to ask yourself what type of fish you find attractive or appealing. The type and number of fish you select will help determine the size and type of aquarium you need. There are many different types of fish available and they each have specific needs and requirements. Schooling fish naturally are more comfortable in bigger groups; they also need more length for swimming space. Community fish like Tetras, Barbs, Guppies, and Rainbows normally require less space. Cichlids need lots of bottom space.

DO YOUR RESEARCH – setting up a first-time aquarium can be a daunting task for a beginner. Visit your local pet shop, ask lots of questions, read books, check online resources. Time spent doing your homework will result in an investment that will provide years of enjoyment.

Fish as pets requires the same level of commitment as is required for having any pet. Beyond the initial cost of setting up an aquarium you need to be committed to giving your fish the time and care to maintain a healthful stress-free environment for them.

The arrival of fall brings cooler weather and more opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. Even without calendars our pups can sense there are changes in the air. They feel the excitement; their energy levels are higher. They need activities to help channel and discharge their energy. It’s a good time for more frequent and longer walks. How do you feel about walking your dog? Do you enjoy walking your dog?

Walking is an activity well known to have physical, emotional, and mental benefits for people and dogs. Establishing a dog-walking routine gives our dogs chances for socializing and provides ideal opportunities for training. Even walking 15 minutes a day has significant health benefits. For us, it will help lower blood pressure, reduce stress levels and help with weight management.

For dogs, a daily exercise routine promotes cardiovascular fitness and helps prevent obesity. However, walking is so much more than a physical activity. It is their link to the outside world. They need sensory enrichment. They crave opportunities to explore new places and smells. Walking in new areas helps them process a variety of different sights, smells and sounds. It’s great for mental stimulation and development. It’s helpful to develop a routine, however, by adding variety you are giving them the freedom to explore, to sniff, and to help set the pace. Eventually you’ll establish a rhythm that works for both of you and will be a positive bonding experience.

Walking your dog will encourage socialization. Your dog will have opportunities to socialize and interact with other people and dogs. These interactions will help them practice their social skills in a variety of settings.

Walking WalkingTHE BENEFITS OF YOUR DOG

As you travel on your walk together, there will be many chances to teach and practice training skills. As pet parents we are responsible for their safety and well-being. In spite of the benefits that walking offers our dogs, there are some potential dangers.

One of the most important commands to teach and reinforce is the “Drop It/Leave It” command. Dogs pick up all kinds of interesting treasures such as chicken bones, all kinds of poop with cat poop high on the list, and potentially hazardous items containing xylitol and THC/marijuana. The “leave it” command tells dogs to not touch the item and the “drop it” is used to tell them to drop the item if they picked it up. Have you ever wondered why poop is on the list? Or have you ever asked the question, why do dogs eat poop? It’s gross to us but it is fairly normal behavior for some dogs. In addition to experiencing their world through sniffing, dogs also use their mouths to explore their world. We use our hands in much the same way. Poop informs them about the dog or cat who made it and what they recently consumed. It is thought too, that some dogs like the taste and texture of poop. Eating the poop of other dogs or cats can cause health problems if the poop is contaminated with parasites, viruses or toxins. HALLOWEEN Pet Safety Tips

NO SWEETS. Your dog or cat may beg for some Halloween candy but remember that chocolate is harmful in any amount. Be careful about diet candies - the ingredient Xylitol is in many sugar-free treats and is a serious danger for pets. Another popular Halloween treat to avoid for pets is raisins.

CANDY WRAPPERS , such as tin foil and plastic, can get stuck in your pet’s digestive track and make them ill.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT CANDLES AND LIGHTED JACK-O LANTERNS. They can easily be knocked over by a swinging dog’s tail or by a curious cat.

KEEP YOUR PETS INDOORS ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT. Animals are at risk for cruel treatment by Halloween pranksters. Spooked pets can get lost. Microchip and tag them in case they get out.

COSTUMES ARE OPTIONAL - If your dog or cat doesn’t want to wear a costume, don’t force the issue. A costume should never confine, constrain or aggravate your pet. Watch for loose parts and chewing hazards.

KNEAD?

We love our delightful and fascinating felines. One of the cutest behaviors that cats do is often referred to as “making biscuits” or kneading because it actually looks as if they are kneading dough. I’m sure you’ve seen them moving their feet and alternating their paws, pushing in and out against a blanket, stuffed animal or something soft. It’s a common behavior for most cats and there are a number of reasons why they do it.

It is instinctive behavior from their kitten years. When nursing, young kittens knead on their mothers to help stimulate milk production. This kneading action also releases oxytocin which creates a strong bond with their mothers. In the adult cat kneading is thought to be a self-soothing behavior that comforts them. They often knead before they fall asleep. Before bedtime, my cat often kneads his favorite stuffed cat for about 3 to 5 minutes. When he is finished kneading, he puts his head on it and falls asleep. It is so cute to watch!

Another reason for kneading is to mark their territory. They have scent glands on the bottom of their paws. When they knead, they release pheromones or their scent onto the kneaded surfaces. It’s their way to stake their claim.

It’s great to be loved and needed by a cat, however, being “kneaded” by a cat can be painful. This instinctive and natural behavior is how some cats show their love and affection for their people. Do not punish your cat for kneading you. Keep their nails trimmed short. Have a blanket handy to put on your lap for protection. Provide alternate items such as stuffed animals or other toys for them to knead while on your lap.

Understanding feline behavior helps us love and appreciate our cats and strengthens the bonds between us.

Kittens love to play! We love to watch them play. Their play helps them learn the necessary skills of stalking and pouncing for catching and killing prey. Cats in the wild had to hunt birds, mice, and small animals to survive. They were always ready to pounce and catch their next meal. Domesticated cats still need toys and activities to provide opportunities to use their prey behaviors of stalking and pouncing. Play stimulates cats mentally and helps them develop coordination and balance.

Most cats love to play regardless of their age. As some cats mature their personal interest for play may diminish yet their actual need for play still exists. It is important to keep challenging your cat to play. Cats are naturally curious and they can get bored and depressed without daily play and stimulation. Play and challenging activity is the best remedy for Bored Cat Syndrome. Some cats sleep excessively when bored and under stimulated. Other cats resort to destructive and aggressive behaviors.

Cats will get bored with a toy after a while. It is helpful to provide them with a few toys at a time. Rotating the toys makes the old toys seem new and exciting and helps keep your cat interested in their toys.

Interaction with you is one of the most important ways to enrich your cat’s play life. Set aside five minutes twice a day for playing with your cat. Use different toys and activities during these periods to provide your cat with the physical and social stimulation they need for their well being and happiness.

When you adopt or buy a dog as a puppy, you go through the regular stages of puppyhood from catching Rover as he chews up valuable items to cleaning up constant accidents in the house. While the puppy era can be frustrating, it is almost bearable as you realize that they will grow out of it and become responsible adult dogs sometime soon. With each day, training will become easier as you and your puppy become acquainted. They’ll learn what you expect of them and you’ll learn how to communicate effectively perfecting the language of dog.

For the next few years, it’s a peaceful journey as you and your dog cohabitate collectively in your home, respecting each other’s boundaries. Visits to the vets are typically nothing more serious than vaccinations or perhaps Max had run too fast at the dog park and pulled a muscle. A gentle dose of painkillers for a week takes care of the injury and you’re free to enjoy each other’s energy shortly thereafter.

Later on, down the road, you begin to notice the gentle telltale signs of your dog as the aging process begins. At first, the signs are slight. They may walk just a little more slowly but perk up back to normal once they get moving. They may have minor aches and pains, again ever so slight.

Their faces may begin to turn gray and then fully white, as the fur on their backs begins to turn gray as well.

Eventually, they take a little bit longer to get up from a down position and it becomes clear that arthritis is bothering them a bit. Their joints are not as flexible.

Their teeth might not shine as brightly and their fur might not be as soft. You may notice they need to go outside more frequently and might sleep a little more.

It’s during this stage of their lives when you realize that your pup has finally begun the aging process. You now are the proud owner of a senior dog.

What Can Be Done?

Sadly, just like humans, we can’t slow life down. It’s going to happen at its own steady pace and with it is going to come a decrease in energy and some ailments.

Using glucosamine as a supplement will help ease the pain in their joints. If the pain gets more severe, you may want to inquire about Rimadyl or Metacam.

If they are getting a little chubby around the waistline, there are low-fat foods that might keep them trim. Since some older dogs are not as active as they once were, taking multiple short walks throughout the day can help them get the exercise they need without overdoing it.

Senior dogs seem to develop cysts or tumors. Many are benign, but if you feel a new bump on your pet, bring this to your vet’s attention for further evaluation, especially if your pup seems to be in pain.

With a senior pet, it may become somewhat stressful as you worry about their well-being, but you can still enjoy life with them. It just involves a little extra care and caution with them and ensuring that they are comfortable. It’s the least we can do for an animal that has provided us with love, loyalty, and trust for their entire time with us.

It’s not a secret that the rise in popularity of true crime shows has grown tremendously in recent years. Similar to scary movies, it allows people the cathartic effect of intense fear without living through it themselves. Unfortunately, that fear is very real to those targeted by these crimes. Beyond the thrill of a mystery, what’s even worse is when the victims can’t speak for themselves, and they rely on others to advocate for them. Such is the case for the victims of animal abuse – animals that I see much too frequently. Giving them a voice is one of the most rewarding parts of my job as a veterinarian training in veterinary forensic science.

What exactly is veterinary forensic science? It is the use of veterinary medicine and forensic science techniques to investigate potential crimes involving animals and just one of the many growing and evolving fields within the animal care industry. Even within this field, there are small sub-specialties, such as those involving wildlife and illegal game hunting to the science of analyzing crime scenes. Our organization, Hearts Alive Village, partners with the law enforcement agencies in Clark County, City of Las Vegas, City of North Las Vegas, and Henderson in providing forensic examination services for possible victims of animal cruelty.

Live and deceased animals, who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect, are brought to our facility by animal protection officers. It is our job to then examine them, or conduct a necropsy (animal autopsy) if the animal is deceased, to assess the animals objectively and collect evidence when animal cruelty is suspected. We take photographs, collect biological samples and document important data relevant to the case. This information is then drafted into a formal statement of case findings along with an interpretation of the presented details. Sometimes, this leads to working additionally with the district attorney’s office if they need an expert witness to testify for particular cases.

Because most people in this line of work are animal lovers, veterinary forensics can be extremely challenging, especially when an animal is brutally killed, severely injured or is suffering and in pain. However, seeking justice for these animals is a vital part of law enforcement, not just for the welfare of animals, but also for human welfare. According to the Federal Bureau of the Investigation, research shows a well-documented link that animal cruelty is a predictive or co-occurring crime with violence against humans (including intimate partners, children, and elders) and is associated with other types of violent offenses. An increased awareness of this linkage and a collaborative approach to these investigations strengthens the identification and reduction of such crimes.

As much as I love what I do, it’s a hard reality that seeing animal cruelty victims is a frequent part of my job. But choosing to focus on the positive is a necessary skill. Plus, knowing I play a part in seeking justice for these animals and, sometimes, eventually placing them in a loving home, is all the gratification I need.

In a classroom, a young student taps a pencil, gazes out the window, and sighs.

“AH! My dog is home waiting for me,” he mumbles in response to his desk partner’s prying whisper.

“My kitty’s home alone, too. Think they’re, ok?”

“I dunno. Why couldn’t we just stay home?”

Kids, separated from their pets, may experience anxiety. Concerns arise when animals are left at home. Young children can become restless, unfocused, and worry about leaving their pets behind. Their pet has been hugged, spoiled, and played with for months. They hope their loyal furry pal will be okay till they return.

BEFORE SCHOOL

Children and pets can be reassured. Start with a morning routine that strengthens their bond, allowing them to feel good about each other. Here are four simple tasks to do before leaving for school:

➥ Change toys occasionally to avoid boredom and misconduct

Some teachers suggest placing a photo in a backpack before leaving for school. This helps a young child reduce separation worries which are a developmental hurdle children may experience. Handled gently, they, and their pets can adjust.

AFTER SCHOOL

Your pet or pets may become sad or bored without you. They will be waiting and wanting your attention just like you want your parent’s attention sometimes. They may chew or whine when they see you, or they may cling. (Some cats ignore you to say they weren’t happy you left.) Both you and your pet will miss each other. But you can help them adjust. Take 10 or 20 minutes to play with your pet, you both will feel loved, get needed exercise, and be ready to settle down for homework. Like at school, being responsible will help you both enjoy your new schedule.
