ANIMALZONE IS NOW EXPANDING TO COX TELEVISION’S NATIONAL MARKET The award-winning television series, AnimalZone is coming to Las Vegas. It will air on Saturdays on Cox Cable’s national network at 9:30 PM and channels 13 & 14 and 1013 & 1014 in Las Vegas. The first Las Vegas episode airs on November 6 and will feature Gregory Popovich of Comedy Pet Theater at the V Theater in Planet Hollywood, Hearts Alive Village and Dog Junkies. Future episodes will feature other Las Vegas shelters and rescues including Seniors To The Rescue. AnimalZone was started in 2018 by Arthur von Wiesenberger, a passionate animal lover and advocate. As host of the TV series, Arthur meets with animal lovers, learns tips and tricks for giving animals the best lives possible, and introduces audiences to loving animal friends who are looking for their forever homes. The goal of the show is to help educate, entertain and inspire people to rescue and care for animals. It addresses critical animal welfare issues and promotes pet adoption. AnimalZone shares the important work being done by so many organizations and professionals in the animal field.

THE INCREDIBLE ICE SKATING DOG

Imagine the ice skating rink, spectators are collectively silent waiting in anticipation; then as if on cue the crowd starts shouting and cheering, “Benny, Benny, Benny” as Benny enters the rink. He is totally focused on skating and jumping over hurdles. His fans love him and he loves performing for them.

his talented and gifted canine celebrity performs, does tricks, models and is an incredible ice skating dog. Yet perhaps his most important role is promoting and supporting pet rescue. His mom, Cheryl DelSangro, calls him the “poster pup” for adoptable dogs and “second chances”. Benny got his second chance approximately 8 years ago when Cheryl and her husband, Flory, decided it was time to add another rescue dog to their family. In searching online Cheryl came across Benny’s picture, looking into his eyes, she fell in love with this cute Yellow Lab young dog. She learned that he was in a Salt Lake City, Utah shelter for six months and was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. They quickly went through the rescue work to adopt him and give him his second chance. Cheryl said she recognized immediately that Benny was very smart and a fast learner so she began training him. Naturally athletic with a great sense of body awareness, he loved the challenge of learning new skills and tricks. Benny has always participated in a variety of charity fundraisers and children’s events performing and doing tricks. At Opportunity Village he visits with residents and even pushing some in wheelchairs. Another one of his favorite charities is Spectrum on Ice where he enjoys skating with the children. Spectrum on Ice is dedicated to promoting acceptance and providing opportunities on and off the ice for athletes with a spectrum of abilities. He has

made appearances at local animal organizations including The Animal Foundation and the Nevada SPCA. Given Benny’s natural athletic ability it is not surprising that Benny’s ice skating potential surfaced. In May 2018 Cheryl was invited to do a cheer video at Las Vegas Ice Center after the Vegas Golden Knights made the NHL Playoffs. Benny joined her on the ice running around on the ice with a hockey stick in his mouth. That was when Cheryl thought that Benny could add ice skating to the list of sports Benny enjoyed such as dock driving and skateboarding. One challenge was designing custom-made skates which took a few months. On his first practice on the ice his mom corrected his feet positions a few times and then he was off on his own; he was able to skate. He was doing jumps and even perfected crossovers. Benny became the Incredible Ice Skating Dog!

You can see Benny is person on December 8 at the Cosmopolitan Ice Skating Rink from 6-8PM. For every skate rental purchased during the event, $2.00 will be donated to the Nevada SPCA. Benny truly is a “Poster Pup” for spreading the message of pet rescue and giving pets “second chances”. PET ORGANIZATION Organize Your Life with Pets By

eeping our pet’s things organized is no different than our own; they can overtake our home with clutter if we don’t keep it under control. When things are organized it’s much easier and quicker to get what you need rather than searching for them So, where do we start to keep things under control? Even with my own things, I gather up what I want to organize in a better way by bringing them together in one place. If you have time to do them all, that’s great. But if doing that seems overwhelming and your time is limited, do one type of category at a time. I love this saying I saw on a sugar packet and have taped to my computer, “The best way to get there is to start.” Then I sort them by category, just like the pet stores do. Looking for a new leash, you can head right to that aisle. Look through what you have and ask yourself, are there things you no longer need or have seen better days. It will be amazing how many expired medications you’ll find, or ones where you can’t even read the label. I had a couple of these. Now that you have all the like items together, where would be the most convenient place to store them and take them to that area. It’s essential you do this to see how much room you have and to have an idea of the type and size of containers to buy. Do you have room in a cabinet and don’t need something decorative, or are they visible, and do you want to conceal them in pretty containers? If a couple of family members walk Fido, have a walk station by the door. Use a tote to place his leash, harness, waste bags, and baby wipes if you need a quick clean-up. A small first aid kit would be a good idea too. Then put it by the door or hang it in a closet for easy grabbing. This way, everyone knows where his leash is. Have one shelf in your storage pantry just for their things. I like to use clear plastic boxes to keep things that are not boxed or too small to stack, like their chew bones, vitamins, medication, and grooming items. The dollar stores have all types and sizes of boxes. I use a separate container for each type and label them Don’t have room in your pantry? You can do a doggy drawer. Use drawer organizers or plastic boxes to keep it organized;

you don’t need another junk drawer. Also, clear-over-the-door shoe organizers work great for small items. Now how do you tackle their toys? There’s no perfect way around toys being on the floor and having to pick them up at the end of the night. You want them to be able to keep themselves occupied and play when they want to. So, either you have them where they can get to them, or you pull a couple out each day. I like mine to pick what they want, and I figure what’s the difference between gathering up two toys or ten. If you’re going to have them out, have just one place where they get put away each night. A quick grab and drop are better than stepping on their squeaky toys in the middle of the night. There are all kinds of attractive containers you can use. If you get one with a handle, you can carry it around when doing your toy run. How about a large decorative ice trough? Cut down a wine barrel. A trip to an antique store can get your creative juices flowing to find something unique. In my master retreat, I have my baby rocker where I put the toys they play with in the morning when I’m getting ready. Want them out of sight but easy to get to? Storage ottomans are perfect and dual-functional. Pull their toys out and get your feet up after a long day. Vintage suitcases can add a nice touch. They stack, close, and are very chic. You can even sort their toys by suitcase – one for bones, one for plush toys, and one for their squeaky toys. No matter how and where you store your fur baby’s things, you need to be diligent in putting them away; otherwise, you’ll be back to where you started. As they say, “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

t’s that time of year again and the holidays are approaching quickly. If one were to look at the commercials and all of the beautiful decorations in the stores, the common theme is to find the utmost happiness during this time of the year. While we strive to make that happen, often times it’s not that easy. As pet owners, we know what a blessing our pets are, however, during the holidays being a caregiver can prohibit us from doing certain things, such as seeing family members or friends, or traveling out of state to be with loved ones during this time of year. This happens especially when one is a caregiver to an older pet, or one that has special needs. In turn, it can actually wind up being a very lonely and depressing time of year for many. It’s not easy to leave a healthy pet and enjoy the holidays without them, but when pets need a little more special attention, it makes leaving them even more difficult! There are ways to circumvent this. Little adjustments that can turn the holiday into one of peace and inner joy. Although the holidays fall on a specific day every year, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate before or after. If you have family and friends in town but know that they won’t be able to visit your home on the holidays, why not have a small gathering at your own home before the holidays begin? This way you don’t need to feel like you are abandoning your pet, and at the same time, get to partake in the festivities, albeit a few days earlier. It doesn’t need to be a fancy shindig, nor do you even have to cook! These days, ordering in is simple, and you can make it a day of spoiling both you and your pet, while having your loved ones close by. If you can normally leave your pet, and would need to travel to see family and friends, you might find pet sitters are booked for the holiday. Again, you can travel the week before or after. You might be able to get the perfect pet sitter and also might score on some decent prices to travel as well! 14

If being with family and friends is not an option for you at all, perhaps you can make the holidays a time to pamper you AND your pets. If you have dogs (and they are capable) maybe take them on that hike you’ve been meaning to go on. If they are not well, or not up for too much exercise, they might enjoy a little car ride as their adventure. Dust off your good camera and take some quality pictures, or create a scrapbook. Use this day to indulge in your creative side and while you’re at it, put on your favorite movie (Hint- it doesn’t need to be a holiday special)! Also, cook your preferred meal! Just because you are not celebrating in the traditional sense, doesn’t mean you can’t gather your ingredients and cook up something you enjoy! Use this holiday week to call and get in touch with those whom you haven’t spoken to in a while. Rehash happy memories and catch up on all of the things you haven’t had a chance to speak about. In addition, make some time to spoil yourself. As caregivers for pets that are not well, we often neglect our own needs and start to feel withdrawn and even unhealthy. While we want to focus all of our energy on our pets, the only way we can effectively do that is if we feel up to the task. It’s crucial to take even just one hour out of the day to go on that long walk or enjoy a relaxing pedicure. In order for your pet to feel healthy and happy, you also need be well rested and have plenty of nutrition, hydration and rest!

Take solace in the fact that you are doing a wonderful thing by taking care of your pet so judiciously! ith the holiday season rapidly approaching, you may already be planning your special meals and gifts for your family and friends. It is the time of year when we want to spend time with our families and show our appreciation to those that are close to us. It is also the season for giving – the perfect time to support and “give back” to a deserving animal rescue organization. There are so many ways to help out an animal rescue. Finding out what their specific needs are is a great start. Maybe they’re in need of cat litter, water bowls, bedding, or grooming supplies. Purchasing a few items for them is one option, but you may already have some items around the house that could be useful. Old blankets or comforters can make great bedding material. Maybe you have some extra bowls or containers around the house that could be repurposed into a pet’s food or water bowl? Extra leashes and collars are also things you may have on hand that could be donated. Another great gift for an animal rescue is the donation of your time. Find out what they need help with and when. It may be dog walking, bathing/grooming, feeding, or even cleaning out cat litter boxes. (No, it’s not ALL fun stuff, but still needs doing.) Virtually anything you can help with will be greatly appreciated by the staff and beneficial to the animals. You will be providing a much-needed service.

WE’VE ALL HAD DAYS LIKE THIS… Probably every pet lover has had their day or outlook turned around completely by an experience with a pet similar to the one a reader recently shared with us.

I’m new to sales. I’ve resisted it my whole life because I knew in my heart that it would be one of the hardest jobs for me. I thought I wasn’t built for it. I was afraid to “take work home” with me. And I was afraid to worry about my “numbers.” However, despite what my heart tells me, my brain reminds me that I can talk to people and I can compose a decent email and I can take no for an answer. Still, there are tough days. On many occasions these past 8 months, I’ve wanted to quit. I couldn’t stomach walking into another person’s office; their gatekeeper glaring at me as if to say, “Oh, another salesman.” And I couldn’t handle the white lies. “She’s in a meeting.” “He’s already left for lunch.” “We’re good, we don’t need anything.” Eight months into it and I was having a bad day. The “No’s” seemed louder and more aggressive, the gatekeepers eyes were rolling, the check engine light on the Jeep was on and the normal things we all worry about were on my mind: our health, our families, our livelihoods. And then, I looked out the window at a stoplight and saw “Chili Dog.” He was sitting there on his human’s back, living his best life. I rolled down the window and even told the biker, “Man! STOPPING A CAT FROM SCRATCHING THE FURNITURE By Kelley Bollen, MS, CABC Certified Animal Behavior Consultant Principal Consultant – Kelley Bollen Consulting, LLC

ne of the most common complaints about cats is that they scratch the furniture with their claws resulting in a shredded mess. Why do they insist on ruining your stuff? Well, the first thing you need to understand is that scratching is a normal and important behavior for cats. Its not just a behavior they like to do, it’s a behavior they have to do. Every two to three months the outer sheath of the cat’s nail comes off to make room for the newer nail to grow in. Scratching helps cats remove that dead nail sheath. In addition to this necessary function, scratching is also an important marking behavior for cats. Cats are very territorial animals and scratching is one way that they mark their territory. The visual mark that they leave behind (the shredded substrate) tells everyone that this area is theirs. In addition to the visual marks, cats also leave an olfactory mark on the scratched surface. You see, cats have scent glands in the pads of their feet and when they scratch on something they also deposit the substance in those glands onto the surface. Because a cat’s sense of smell is their most important sense, leaving behind a scent mark is a powerful message to other cats. Since scratching is such a normal and important behavior for cats there is no way to stop them from doing it. The goal is to get them to scratch on a more suitable item like a scratching post so that they stop damaging your furniture. There are many different kinds of scratching posts so it’s important to purchase the ones that cats prefer. The first thing to consider is the substrate covering the post. Although many of the scratching posts you find in stores are covered in loop carpeting, cats do not prefer this substrate because their claws get caught in the carpet loops when they scratch. If you purchase a carpeted post make sure it’s covered with the low pile berber carpeting. The posts that most cats prefer however are the ones covered with sisal rope or those made of natural wood. You can even make your own natural wood post using a tree branch or log from the woodpile. The second important component is the height of the post. A vertical scratching post needs to be tall and stable. Cats 20

love to stretch their whole body when they scratch so the short posts are not preferred. And if the post is not stable and falls over when the cat scratches on it they will stop using it. Some cats also enjoy horizontal posts. Many of the horizontal scratching boards are made of corrugated cardboard and are quite inexpensive. My recommendation is to purchase a variety of scratching posts so that your cat has a choice. The last bit of advice is the location of the posts. It is very important to place the posts in prominent areas of your house. This is where your cat feels he needs to advertise his presence - not in the back bedroom or the basement. If your cat is scratching on the sofa in your living room, put a scratching post near the sofa. While you may not want a scratching post in your living room, its way better to have one there than to replace your expensive sofa every few years. Once you have provided your cat with a variety of scratching posts in prominent areas of your house you can discourage use of your furniture using a few different strategies. You can put double-sided tape or some aluminum foil strips on the corners of your furniture to discourage use or you can hang a sachet on the furniture soaked with a scent that cats don’t like such as citrus or menthol.

Living peacefully with your cat takes understanding of their kitty ways and providing an environment where they can do cat things without it causing human grief and frustration.

Why I Sponsored AB209 AKA Anti-Declaw Cat Bill Background:

During my re-election campaign in 2020, I was approached by a constituent who spoke to me at length regarding the physical and physiological effects of cat declawing. I had always believed that declawing involved a simple surgery where the cat’s nails are removed similar to having your fingernails trimmed. Upon further research, I was horrified to learn that declawing was basically toe amputation. This would be the equivalent of cutting off each finger at the last knuckle.

2021 Nevada Legislative Session

During the 2021 Nevada Legislative Session, I sponsored AB209, which was commonly referred to as the “Anti-Declaw Cat bill”. This bill would have prohibited the practice of cat declawing unless it was medically necessary to address the physical condition of the cat. Prior to sponsoring this bill, I was warned by many people that this would be an incredibly difficult journey due to strong opposition by certain groups. In fact, one animal rights advocate was concerned that the bill would not even receive a committee hearing. I knew that in order for this bill to move forward, I needed to build support from constituents and community organizations. My staff and I reached out to some incredible animal organizations, including local animal organizations, the Humane Society of the United States, and the Paw Project. They provided me with an extraordinary amount of knowledge, resources, and expertise to continue pushing this bill forward. During the first committee hearing of AB209, I was shocked and amazed at what I was witnessing. Constituents from all over Nevada with different backgrounds and political beliefs testifying one by one in support of AB209. These weren’t lobbyists or politically connected individuals. These were ordinary Nevadans who came together on this issue and made their voices heard. They would periodically call my staff and request information on how they could participate in the legislative process by writing letters to legislators, calling their offices, and even testifying in committee. Because of them, AB209 passed the Nevada State Assembly with bipartisan support and headed to the Senate.

Disappointments & Inspiration

Although AB209 did not pass the Nevada State Senate, I will forever be grateful to the amount Nevadans who made their voices heard. During my legislative career, I’ve sponsored many pieces of legislation including consumer protection laws, public safety protections, and establishing in-door air quality standards in public schools. AB209 was by far the most popular, responsive, and passionate bill I have ever sponsored. Often times, we feel that our voices aren’t being heard. That we can’t make a difference in the legislative process. As a legislator myself, I will be the first to tell you. When you call, send emails, and write letters to your representatives. It DOES make a difference. They may not always agree with you, but I promise you - they WILL notice. That’s why it’s important to get involved early by contacting your representative, educating them on this issue, and voicing your support during the legislative process. Our work doesn’t end here. We’re just getting started.

ets have always played a vital role in my life. Growing up, we always had kitties and dogs and a variety of other animals at various times. After the loss of my beloved cat, Sammy, I experienced what life is like without the pitter-patter of little paws roaming around the house. I soon realized that life without pets is not for me. After months of pondering whether I wanted a dog or a cat, an unexpected trip to my family’s ranch in Wyoming provided me with the perfect opportunity to adopt a kitten that needed a new home. My cousin in Lusk, Wyoming had four barn kittens that needed good homes. She and her family had spent a lot of time with them, so they were all very tame, healthy, and extremely friendly. I was immediately drawn to a pretty little orange and white male, while my son was very fond of an adorable little tiger-tabby female. These two kittens were very sociable with people and were definitely bonded with each other. I fell in love with both of them. So, OF COURSE, I came home with two kittens! No big deal, right? It really couldn’t be that much different than just having one? Within thirty minutes of getting them home, I learned that having two kittens is monumentally different than having just one! These adorable, furry little monsters abruptly transformed my home into something unrecognizable. All flat surfaces in my house were immediately cleared of all “trivial” items I had on them. My reading glasses, remotes, pens and pencils, phone chargers, nail files, paper clips, tissue boxes, and everything else I had on my coffee table and end tables were immediately swatted onto the floor and attacked at random. Picking up my stuff and putting it back soon proved to be a futile activity. After putting several things away in a secure spot, all my other items are still typically found conveniently accessible on the floor. (Yes, sometimes you have to choose your battles.) My pre-kitten leisurely mornings of drinking coffee and watching a little news have also drastically changed. Guarding my coffee cup, the TV remote, reading glasses, and laptop are now my new morning activities. Coffee cups, along with water/ 28

juice glasses, need to be guarded every minute. I cannot put cups or drinking glasses down anywhere, even if they’re empty! My coffee cup will immediately be attacked wherever I put it, so I need to hold on to it at all times. ANY drinking glasses left on the coffee table will soon have two little furry heads stuffed inside of them. They will promptly tip them over, lick them clean, and then readily discard them onto the floor in one slap. (At least they’re keeping all of my stuff in the same general floor area, right?) My new leisurely mornings now consist of stuffing my reading glasses in my collar, the tv remote and cell phone in my pocket, and my coffee cup in hand where ever I go. Aside from the various “toys” they have discovered on my coffee table, I purchased some cat toys I thought might curb their affinity for playing with MY stuff. Before I could get to a store, I went through my junk drawer and created some make-shift kitty toys. I found an old camera strap, a shoe lace, a ribbon, a piece of irrigation hose, and a variety of other miscellaneous items that I thought they might like. They actually LOVED them! (For some reason, the camera strap tied to the shoe lace is still their absolute favorite.) One of the new toys I bought them was a package of some little stuffed toy mice with catnip. At the time, I thought it was a good choice – Nope, NOT a good choice at all. Unless you are planning on staying up all night for a particular reason or if you can sleep through eight exuberant pounding little paws running laps under and across your bed all night long, I would not recommend catnip for kittens. Although I have had to make some adjustments to my everyday life, my new little kitties are SO worth it. They make me laugh and bring me joy every day. I have named them Luke and Leia. Luke, my little orange male, is typically very chill, but still extremely playful and curious. Leia is my petite little daredevil that has no fear and gets into FAR more trouble than her brother. They make a great pair. I am looking forward to spending many, many years with my newfound furry family members. I am also enjoying that sweet, comforting sound of tiny little paws roaming throughout my house once again.

Bobbie took opportunities to spend time with horses while growing up. When asked about childhood memories, she replied, “I think the thing I loved most about horses were their muzzles… velvet soft, with prickles where their whiskers are.” To get that close, Bobbie learned to observe, trust, and communicate from her heart.

AT A RANCH

Each day horses are loved, respected, and cared for often by volunteers and mentees. Pony Clubs, 4-H clubs, riding camps, and equestrian organizations are concerned about animals and dedicated to their well-being. Organizations like Horses4Heroes in Las Vegas serve numerous veterans, community workers, and children. When I visited this ranch, students were confident, compassionate, and followed instructors’ leads watching the animals for signs of communication. Sydney Knott Cunningham, founder and CEO of Horses4Heroes and her team teach respect, communication skills, and how to care for animals including goats, miniature horses and a llama who watches over his steer “brother”. Certified instructor, Libuse “Libby” Bugl, is director of Health & Wellness programs. With family members who serve as first responders, Libby understands the challenges faced by families and the power of horses to heal hearts and reduce anxiety.

Libby calls Maverick, “the class clown”. Within moments of an introduction, his friendly yet mischievous side can be sensed. Horses at the ranch, like humans, have various personalities. One mare had four foals (baby horses) within five years. She is exceptionally sweet toward young human children. There’s also Tex, a horse who had no reason to trust humans but has developed an incredible bond with Libby, whose love for him is clear. Penny, a friendly mare, and Westley, her half-sibling, were saved when they were inside their mothers who were marked

for slaughter until rescued. There are so many compelling stories. Each horse influences different children and you can see kids gravitate to the personality with which they identify.

HOLIDAY PLANTS AND PETS Tis the Season to deck the halls with boughs of holly – unfortunately many of the festive plants associated with the winter holidays are toxic to cats and dogs. AMARYLLIS - Plant bulb kits featuring Amaryllis, Daffodils, and other plants in the lily family are popular gift items at this time of year. These are very toxic for cats and dogs. These plants cause severe gastrointestinal problems, cardiac arrhythmias, kidney failure, convulsions and death. MISTLETOE & HOLLY are holiday plants are considered moderately to severely toxic. POINSETTIAS –The toxicity of this plant is not as serious as once thought. It is irritating to the mouth and stomach and sometimes causes vomiting. It is still a good idea to keep them out of your pet’s reach. CHRISTMAS CACTUS – This is one of the safer choices, it is non toxic to cats and dogs. There is one more holiday plant to add to the list – THE CHRISTMAS TREE. Pine trees are mildly toxic and can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach. The needles are not easily digested and can cause GI problems and vomiting. More toxic, however, is the standing water in the tree stand. It contains fertilizers and probably harbors mold and bacteria - a few sips can cause your pet to become extremely sick. Keep the plant stand covered so your pets can’t drink the tree water. Eating any plant material can still cause vomiting and other reactions in your pets. It is better to be safe than sorry.

URINARY INCONTINENCE IN DOGS By Elizabeth Racine, DVM

Is your dog waking up to a wet bed? Are you finding spots of urine around the house when your dog was previously well-trained? Your dog may be experiencing urinary incontinence. This condition can occur in dogs of any age, but adult females are especially prone to developing it. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN URINARY INCONTINENCE AND INAPPROPRIATE URINATION?

When you bring your dog to the veterinary clinic for urinary accidents in the house, one of the first things your veterinarian will try to ascertain is whether your dog’s accidents are due to incontinence or inappropriate urination. Urinary incontinence is involuntary and, in many cases, your dog may be unaware that the problem is even occurring. When a dog is incontinent, urinary accidents may occur when the dog is relaxed, often while sleeping or resting. Some incontinent dogs will dribble urine without even noticing. Alternatively, inappropriate urination is often voluntary – the dog will get up, posture, and urinate in a specific place on purpose. Differentiating between these two types of urination is an important step in the diagnostic process.

WHAT CAUSES URINARY INCONTINENCE?

The most common cause of urinary incontinence in adult dogs is urethral sphincter mechanism incontinence (USMI). This condition occurs primarily in females, typically 2-4 years after they are spayed, although male dogs may be affected as well. With USMI, the muscles of the urethra fail to contract, allowing urine to leak out. A number of factors can predispose dogs to developing USMI, including breed, having a docked tail, and obesity. Other causes of urinary incontinence in dogs include neurologic disorders, anatomic abnormalities, bladder hypercontractility, urine retention (overflow incontinence), and bladder muscle atony or weakness.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE?

Many dogs with urinary incontinence initially present to the veterinary clinic for having accidents in the house. However, these accidents are unique in that they often occur when the dog is asleep or resting, and the dog may be unaware that he or she has urinated. Other symptoms of incontinence can include: • Persistent wetness around the vulva or prepuce • Dribbling urine • Urinating less volume than usual during normal voiding 40

HOW IS URINARY INCONTINENCE TREATED?

Urethral sphincter mechanism incontinence (USMI) is commonly treated with medication. Phenylpropanolamine (PAA) is one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for USMI. This drug works by acting on receptors in the urethra to increase urethral tone, thereby reducing urine leakage. Estrogen may also be given to dogs that do not respond to PAA or those that experience USMI following spaying. For patients that do not respond to medical therapy, surgical treatment options are available. Patients experiencing other types of urinary incontinence may be treated with medical or surgical therapies, depending on the underlying cause of the incontinence.

WILL MY DOG ALWAYS BE INCONTINENT?

Most dogs with USMI respond well to medication and do not experience incontinence as long as they continue to take their medication(s) daily. The prognosis varies for dogs with incontinence due to other underlying causes. Your veterinarian is your best resource to help you determine your treatment options as well as the chances of your dog returning to full urinary continence. The good news is that dogs with incontinence can continue to live full and happy lives, but may need some extra care to ensure they remain healthy. Incontinent dogs are more likely to develop urinary tract infections, so frequent check-ups with your veterinarian may be necessary. You’ll also need to ensure your dog stays clean and dry. Diapers and pads specifically designed for male and female dogs are available to help make managing incontinence easier. Be sure to monitor your dog’s skin for any signs of urine scalding or skin infection, which are common in incontinent dogs, and contact your veterinarian if these conditions occur. With a few adjustments, your dog can continue to live a normal and active life!

Saving the Desert Tortoise The desert tortoise is one of the most well-adapted creatures roaming our deserts. These magnificent reptiles have evolved by having the ability to make something out of almost nothing. Even in the inhospitable desert heat where water and vegetation are sparce, these slow-moving desert inhabitants are well equipped to survive. To beat the heat, tortoises spend much of their time under the shade of shrubs or rocks or in underground burrows. With their slightly flattened front legs, they can easily dig into the desert sand and dirt to create a protective shelter against predators and the extreme desert heat. They also use their burrows to help protect them from the cold and to hibernate in during the coldest part of the winter. Since water is scarce, the tortoise has developed the ability to obtain the majority of the water it needs from the plants it eats. They are able to store water in their bladder for long periods of time due to their innate ability to tolerate high levels of urea in their blood. Tortoises can go for long periods of time without food or water. Sadly, tortoises in the wild are being threatened by the loss of their natural habitat. To make matters worse, there are currently 1,000 pet desert tortoises per year being surrendered in Clark County alone. With the help of many tortoise adoption programs throughout the southwest, these wonderful creatures are being saved. Tortoises in Nevada are considered wildlife and technically belong to the people of the state. Adoptees are considered custodians of these unique animals. Since tortoises require specific accommodations, potential custodians need to have their yards and facilities approved by accredited tortoise adoption agencies to ensure their safety. Book Recommendation Looking for a holiday gift for a young person on your gift list? At Street Dogz, we help our community with MUCH MORE than just pet food…. Street Dogz originally started by providing pet food to homeless pet owners and has since grown into so much more! Our mission has been the same since the beginning - to ensure no pet is surrendered due to a lack of resources on the part of their humans. There isn’t anything that we won’t do to keep a pet and owner together. Street Dogz is made up of a group of dedicated individuals who go above and beyond just volunteering. We genuinely care about not only the animals but our clients as well. The best for our clients means the best for their pets! We are 100% volunteer-powered and 100% donor-funded.

An example of some “outside the box” things we do to keep our clients and pets happy, healthy, and together: • Free spay and neuter for all bully breeds (other breeds & cats as funds allow) • Veterinarian services, medication, and specialty pet food • Monthly Pop-Up’s providing food, pet & human supplies, vaccinations, & grooming • Emergency housing for homeless pets after surgery • Day-boarding for any homeless pet • Provide euthanasia services for those who cannot afford it • Lyft rides to veterinarian appointments when needed • Bailing out clients petz from the local shelters • Purchased necessary supplies/equipment for clients to start work • Provide bus passes for clients to get to work and distribution sites • Furnish clients newly acquired apartments • Walk and exercise obese pets • Transported pets to their home in other states via land and air • Build fencing to keep pets in the yard and off the chain • Provide portable & window air conditioning units, generators, and car batteries • Partner with Sunrise Hospital to care for pets left at home (or shelter) for owners who are out of their household, e.g., hospital, jail

• Mobile grooming for homeless pets, senior clients • Boarding/foster care for DV, rehab, jobs, recent homelessness, • Answer welfare check calls from concerned citizens • Provide food/supplies for any animal who needs it including; chickens, parrots, guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, bunnies, and geese

Every day we provide strollers, wagons, kiddie pools, spray bottles, dog shoes, dog coats, backpacks, suitcases, blankets, dog beds, carriers, tents, sleeping bags, umbrellas, Cosequin, shampoo, collars, harness, leashes, dog tags, bowls, etc. We are happy to do all these things and more as long as it means one less animal surrendered to our local shelter. Providing pet food and supplies is still the core of what we do. Street Dogz holds nine food distribution events around the valley each month. We service both low-income, homed, and homeless clients. We enjoy checking in on our clients and their pets every month. We distribute about 5,500 lbs. of dry food and 1000 cans of pet food each month.
