There are also special months, weeks, and days set aside for pets. Some are serious and important and serve as opportunities for pet lovers to focus together on specific pet issues. Some seem to be created purely for fun. For example, one that we stumbled across is If Pets Had Thumbs Day which is celebrated on March 3. No one seems to know the origin of this special day but it offers us an opportunity to use our imagination and have some fun. Holidays and special pet-themed days provide opportunities for celebration, specialness, and lightheartedness. Are you looking for a fun, rewarding activity that you and your dog can enjoy together? If your dog loves to please you and enjoys a challenge, then Agility training might be an exciting new activity for you both. “Charra”

Agility is a relatively new kind of dog competition which requires you and your dog to maneuver through an obstacle course that includes everything from tunnels and jumps to climbing and weaving. Although YOU won’t be doing the jumping and weaving, you will need to instruct your dog on what to do and where to go by using only voice commands and hand gestures to communicate. You and your dog will need to work as a team to achieve the fastest time with the best accuracy. Your dog will be depending on you for guidance and encouragement throughout the course. At first glance, an Agility course resembles a children’s playground. Bright colors adorn the various obstacles, making them highly visible for both dog and owner. Most courses include bar jumps (a bar that can be placed at different heights) and tire jumps (not actually a tire, but a hoop that a dog jumps through). The tire jump can also be adjusted to different heights, based on the size of the dog. Other fun obstacles include two different types of tunnels: An open tunnel, (through which you can see the opening at the other end), and a closed tunnel, (which opens as the dog proceeds through it). Tunnels, in general, seem to be a dog’s favorite obstacle! Perhaps one of the most entertaining parts of the course to watch is the “weave poles”. The weave poles, consisting of 6 upright poles that a dog must weave in and out of, requires a dog to slow down a little and concentrate. After so much running, jumping and excitement, sometimes the weave poles can trip them up. Watching them try to “hurry” through these poles can be very amusing.

If this fun, fast-paced sport sounds like an activity you’d like to explore, there are a few things to know before getting started. Whether you are interested in Agility training for competition or just for fun, you should start with a basic obedience class for your dog. “Rita” According to Monica Klein with Impressive Vizslas, “dogs should know how to walk on a AM/MEX/FCI/INT.CH.POQUITO’S PICANTE MARGARITA, JH, CD, RN, MX , MXJ, CC, OC, TT, CGC Owner: Mike and Monica Klein leash and know the basic obedience skills (sit, stay, down, and come) before ever starting Agility class. Agility is not something you want to try and do on your own if you have not had previous instruction and classes. This could result in injury to the dog if not trained on how to do all the obstacles in a safe and proper manner.” Sandy Brannum, of the Vegas Valley Dog Obedience Club, explains that after obedience training, your dog should also be able to walk on a loose lead and be under control. “Agility training is on leash to start, but soon graduates to off-leash work if the dog is under control and knows basic commands.” In addition to getting your dog mentally prepared for Agility training, you must also make sure that your dog is physically prepared for this activity. It is important that your dog is physically sound and a healthy weight. Since Agility is a physically demanding sport, dogs with any physical problems (such as hip/elbow dysplasia, or lameness) should not be attempting it. Dogs should also be at least 1 year old before beginning Agility training. Dogs under a year old still have soft bones and their joints are still forming. Extensive jumping and running before the age of one could cause an injury. Your dog’s temperament also plays an important role in the success of Agility training. A good sound disposition goes a long way in this sport. Aggressive dogs are generally not permitted at most Agility courses, but shy or timid dogs are encouraged to participate. Agility training can be greatly beneficial for timid dogs by boosting their confidence and exposing them to new and different situations. They will find out all the things they CAN do!

If Agility sounds like an incredibly FUN activity to share with your dog – it IS! You will strengthen the bond you share with your dog and have a great time doing it. 6

Making a Difference One Girl Scout at a Time…. It all started

back in May of 2013 at a Girl Scout meeting where we were given a long list of possible ideas and projects to think about for our Silver Award, a project that would require a minimum of 50 hours of time to better a cause. We decided we wanted to help animals but was not sure how to exactly go about that. Then one day, while Samantha’s 17 year-old cat, Scrunchie, was getting a vaccination at her veterinarian’s ofﬁce, Samantha saw the cover of Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine. The cover story was about Noah’s Animal House, and it piqued her interest. After we read the great article about Noah’s Animal House, and how it is the the animal shelter for the women and families at Shade Tree, we knew we had found our topic! Over the course of the next six months, we visited the animal shelter, and got to meet the staff and resident pets, 13 dogs and 15 cats. We saw the “cuddle rooms”, and how important it was for the women and families to be connected to their pets in a time of crises. It became clear to us that this non-proﬁt organization, that gets its donations from the community, needed our help. We decided, with the guidance of our

Troop Leader Dawn Mack, to do an Angel Tree Donation Drive for the various items on the wish list of Noah’s House. We called it “Noah’s House Bow-Wow Meow Angel Tree Drive.” We bought our Christmas trees, made the pet ornaments with descriptions of what was needed, and was lucky enough to ﬁnd kind people to house our trees at the holidays. South Shores Animal Hospital, Pet Medical Center, Summer Hills Dental, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, all put up our Angel Trees. We also made special brochures describing our project, and what was on the wish list, like pet treats, potty pads, dog sweaters, gift cards, paper towels, cat litter, etc.

On January 11, 2014, we were able to make over 1,000 dollars in monetary and gift card donations, along with many, many supplies. We were so happy to see how impressed and excited the staff at Noah’s House was to get all the goodies. It was clear we had made an impact for the pets and their loving families. The best part was the feeling of knowing that we did something to help our community and those precious pets in need. In May 2013, we knew we were going to help animals in some way. It is exciting to know that in January 2014, we were able to be a bright spot for the shelter we have come to know and love, Noah’s House. Thank you to Pet Scene Magazine for making this story available to us, and therefore, making our dream become a reality.

HORSES4HEROES DAYS AT TULE SPRINGS TO KICK OFF WEEK OF MARCH 3 Horses4Heroes, Inc., with its local partners, Cox Charities and the Associated General Contractors of America’s Las Vegas Chapter (AGC) are presenting Horses4Heroes Days at Tule Springs, a month-long celebration honoring local heroes and the horses that serve them every day. The events, including free horseback rides for all ages, from small children to adults, will be held March 3-31 in Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs. According to Guy Martin, vice president with Las Vegas-based Martin-Harris Construction and the president of the AGC of Las Vegas, a kick-off is planned the week of March 3 as part of the national association’s charitable effort, known as “Operation Opening Doors.” “Donating the construction services needed to make this project a reality gives us an opportunity to give something back to those in our community whose call of duty is to protect and serve,” said Martin. Horses4Heroes is one of the most successful equestrian service groups for the military, and the only national non-profit equestrian organization that is based in Las Vegas. The organization, at its headquarter facility and through a national network of 265 affiliates in 44 states, provides affordable recreational and instructional

programs for all ages and all riding levels. City of Las Vegas Ward 6 Councilman Steve Ross said bringing horses back to this historic park was part of the 2007 Master Plan, and is important for the community. “We hope that Horses4Heroes Days at Tule Springs is the beginning of a successful partnership between the city of Las Vegas and Horses4Heroes to offer community equestrian services, once again, at Tule Springs,” Councilman Ross said. “Tule Springs was once a working cattle ranch and, later a resort with horseback riding, tennis courts, a swimming pool and spa. Many of us remember riding horses at the park when we were kids and we are looking forward to sharing this experience with our children and grandchildren for many years to come.” During the month of March, Horses4Heroes will be relocating all of its operations to Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs. Activities are planned every weekend in March with weekday activities Tuesday through Friday. weatherpermitting. Daily activities include the popular HorsePlay, a “mommy and me” class for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 18 months to 6 years), beginning and intermediate lessons, and afterschool programs for middle-school and high school students.

In addition to offering low-cost, affordable instructional programs at its northwest Las Vegas headquarters, the organization partners with local non-profits, families and individuals to provide free morale-boosting health & wellness programs for those in the community who need a “hand up.” With names like Back in the Saddle, 8.9.10: Ride to Win, Ladies Unbridled, Unfinished Business, H4H Pony Express and Operation Free Ride, these programs are designed to empower, engage, inspire and even entertain foster children and teens, at-risk youth, victims of domestic abuse and violence, veterans with PTS/TBI/MST and others who can benefit from time spent with horses. The organization uses donated, leased, and aged horses, as well as Animal Control and Feed Lot rescues in its daily programs. APRIL IS Pet First Aid Awareness MONTH

Spring is coming and we’re looking forward to warmer weather and spending more time outdoors. Warmer weather, however, does bring safety concerns for our pets. A FEW IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE AWARE OF: Do not leave an animal in a car even for short periods of time in warm weather. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open. Watch out for heat stroke – when the temperatures rise heat stroke is a problem since pets are not acclimated to the warmer weather. Animals love to play and may not stop playing even if they are becoming overheated. The signs of heat stroke are heavy panting, inability to calm down even when lying down, brick red gums, and a fast pulse rate. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke you should take their temperature rectally. If their temperature is above 105 degrees cool your pet down until the temperature drops to 103. The easiest way to do this is by using a water hose. You should take your pet to the veterinarian as soon as possible as heat stroke can lead to severe organ dysfunction and damage. Be careful when taking your dog for walks on streets and sidewalks. These areas get very hot and can burn your dog’s paws. Open windows and doors can be a pet hazard. Windows and doors are more likely to be open as the weather gets warmer and pets are likely to try to get out. Spring plants can also be a pet hazard – do not use plants which are poisonous to animals. For instance, many lilies are very poisonous to cats. Visit the ASPCA Poison Control web site to find out which plants and flowers are poisonous to animals.

A pet is part of the family. Just like any other family member, pets deserve to be cared for and protected. Pet First Aid Awareness Month is a great time for people to learn how to protect their pet and keep them healthy.

Providing for your pet if you are no longer able to care for them… What if you were told you only had six months to live? What plans would you make for your pet or pets? What if you were told that your death could happen anytime within that six month time? How would you plan for their care?

ou love your pet and are a responsible pet owner. You provide your pet with food, water, shelter, veterinary care, exercise, and lots of love. Providing for your pet in the event of your absence is a part of responsible pet ownership. You want to make sure that the love and care continues for your pet even in your absence. What if you were in a car accident or suffered a serious health problem and were unable to communicate? Would anyone know you have a pet at home? Do you have someone who would be able to care for your pet immediately? Here are a few practical planning tips you can implement immediately:

Select Temporary Caregivers - Find at least one

and preferably two responsible friends or relatives who are willing to be temporary caregivers if something unexpected happens to you.

Carry A Wallet Card - Carry a card in your wallet that lists the names and phone numbers of your temporary pet caregivers. Also include your pets by type and name and their location.

Post Stickers Visible From Outside - Post removable stickers on the inside of your doors or windows that are visible from the outside to alert firefighters, police, or emergency medical technicians that you have pets. Include the type of pet, how many you have, size, and colors. Date the stickers so emergency responders know that the information is current. Create Inside Stickers – Post removable stickers on the inside of your front and back doors listing the names and phone numbers of your temporary caregivers. Emergency responders will be able to notify your caregivers that they need to provide care for your pets..

We all love to pamper our pets. But we also want to keep our homes neat, tidy and attractive. There are many furniture products on the market which are attractive yet also functional for our furry family members. I’m sure you’ve seen the cute pet sized sofas, end tables and night stands which double as crates and chests which hold their dry food as well as bowls. They all like to have a special hidy-hole and spot to call their own. I know mine do, it’s their safe haven. So here are a few other ideas you might not have seen.

Since most cats like to climb, instead of a standard cat tree, place shelves and even this wall mounted bed from www.akemitanaka.com, as part of a wall gallery. It gives them a special place where they can jump, lay and not knock off accessories. To properly secure the art on the wall, use Pic-Sure-Stays. On one side is double stick tape which goes on the back of the frame and the other side is a small nail, which goes into the wall. I use them all the time to keep my art pieces level and secure. You can find them online or at a craft store.

For those that have crate trained their pets, why not dress it up and transform it into an interesting piece of furniture. Add accents from doll houses or build one out of a crib. Have fun and match to your décor.

I love this idea of building a bed into a window seat. They’re tucked away so not under feet, yet in their comfy safe heaven. You can also do this in a TV entertainment center, desk, coffee table or ottoman.

What about hiding the litter box in a dresser or buffet piece? There are many stock pieces you can find at any furniture store. Ear Infections what causes it? what are the treatments? how can it be prevented? By Dr. Erich Roush, DVM

Especially in cats, another cause of ear infections is mites. Otodectes is notoriously contagious between cats and causes intense ear discomfort.

My first step in approaching any ear infection case is to get a feel for the pet’s history: Was the pet recently bathed or taken swimming? Has it been running through fields of tall grasses? Does it have a history of itching or irritation elsewhere on the body? If it’s a cat, are other cats in the household also showing symptoms, or does it mingle with other cats?

Initial tests at your veterinarian’s disposal include otoscopic examination, cleaning of the ears – sometimes under sedation, obtaining a swab of the ear to identify yeast and/ or bacteria, and scraping the skin for mites. Additional testing may be required for more complicated conditions (e.g. allergies, middle/inner ear infections). Treatment often involves some form of topical anti-inflammatory, antifungal and/or antibacterial drugs, though oral medications may also be administered when necessary. Of course, any underlying conditions - such as foreign material or allergies - will need to be addressed as well.

s a veterinarian, one of the most common afflictions I see is external ear infections. The symptoms usually include intense scratching at the ear(s), shaking of the head, debris and sometime odor. In severe cases, pets can traumatize their ears so much that they cause them to swell with blood – something called an aural hematoma. Thankfully, many ear infections can be easily treated and - in some - even prevented.

The majority of ear infections involve the natural yeast and bacteria in your pet’s skin that have been given the opportunity to overgrow. There are three things that these microorganisms enjoy: warmth, moisture, and a plentiful food supply. Retained water, allergies, grass seeds and other foreign material can cause inflammation and accumulation of dead skin cells, making the ideal environment for microbial growth in the ear. Bacteria and yeast ear infections are not contagious, but they perpetuate the inflammation in the ears that is making your pet uncomfortable – the bacteria, yeast and underlying cause(s) must all be identified and addressed together.

TO REDUCE RISKS OF EAR INFECTIONS IN YOUR PET: • Keep cotton balls on hand and use them to dry out your pet’s ears after baths and/or swimming – never use Q-tips!

Ask your veterinarian to recommend a general-purpose ear cleaner and use it to remove dirt and debris once weekly or as needed to keep the ears clean.

Ask your groomer and/or veterinarian to remove excessive hair from the ear canal, when present.

•

If your pet has allergies, work with your veterinarian to keep them under control.

It is also the time when our pets spend more time outside and often accidentally get into poisonous things. Be careful about garden supplies like fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides, and plants. The animals will live in the center full time until they find their forever homes. Currently they have bunnies, a baby gerbil, hamsters, and Chilean degus. As soon as one critter finds their ‘happily ever- after’ home, a trip is made to the shelter to find the next lucky critter. The center is more than a holding place for the animals as they wait for their perfect match. ENRICHMENT By Nancy Steinke

What does that mean? We hear the word tossed around, but what does it mean to people that keep animals? We may nod our heads knowingly and say ‘Enrichment, sure, I do Enrichment. Just the other day, I fed my horse (goat, bird, lizard, etc) something different than their regular food. That’s Enrichment, right?’ Well, yes it is, but there is so much more that can be called Enrichment. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as: “...to make richer, to improve the quality of something, to make something better, to improve the usefulness or quality of something by adding something to it. Hmm, The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute has this to say: “... Environmental Enrichment is the process of providing stimulating environments for zoo (confined) animals in order for them to demonstrate their species typical behavior, to allow them to exercise control or choice over their environment, and to enhance their well being.” Whew! Sounds a little daunting, doesn’t it? It’s not. Truly not if you as the person keeping the animal use a little creativity and common sense to make it happen. It doesn’t have to be expensive, in fact, it doesn’t have to add any cost to what you already do. When we speak of Enrichment, what we are saying is that it is up to us, as caretakers to provide opportunity for the animal to stimulate its mind and body in ways that it would not if just left to its own devices hanging about in its cage waiting to be fed.

Here are a few examples of, and opportunities for Enrichment that anyone can provide and can be used for many differing types of critters.

Use different levels for the flooring, provide things to climb or swing on, or to dig in. Provide some opportunity for privacy, with either a wall or perhaps a partial drape of the cage for him or her to use when they are feeling frightened or just not feeling social.

environment. Everybody has to eat, so use it as an Enriching opportunity: use food puzzles so they have to solve a problem to get the food. Scatter or hide food around the enclosure, bury it in a bucket of clean dirt or place it into a cloth bag which you then tie up. Give them whole fruit- like a pomegranate or pumpkin, or whole vegetables like a wet head of leaf lettuce, corn on the cob, peas in the shell or an entire broccoli tree. Freeze fruit in water/fruit juice on a hot day. Bake whole treats into corn bread. You get the idea, make it interesting!

NOVEL OBJECTS:

Swings, toys, balls, large and smaller, toys stuffed with a good quality peanut or almond butter. A tub of water, a non-toxic plant to shred, a child’s toy that speaks or makes a sound when manipulated. Use your creativity and imagination! Just remember: safety, safety, safety. Never leave your critter unsupervised with an unfamiliar toy, and unless it is specifically food, make sure the parts are too big to swallow. Use common sense and have fun!

TRAINING:

Interact with the animal- allow them to make a choice whether or not to participate in an activity. Training gives the critter a ‘job’ and allows the caregiver to observe the animal closely to gauge its health. Also, training builds trust, making the animal easier to handle for things like routine grooming or trips to the vet, and heaven forbid, in case of an emergency.

SOUND/SMELL:

Play music, play recorded calls of like and different animals in their natural state. Provide smells of prey animals, and predator animals as well.

The first Friday of each month in 2014, proceeds from Crossfire concerts at Club Tequila will benefit one of Southern Nevada’s animal rescue organizations. WATCH OUT! I remember a time when pet etiquette was missing in my life. A small fuzzy dog stood on hind legs whining for attention. A curious five-year old quickly reached through the wooden fence to calm the pup. To the child’s surprise, the dog snapped! Jumping back, she took a deep breath and yelled, “STAY BACK!” but a second child did not listen and reached for that dog. The dog’s owner had to run to help. Having been bitten, that second child was sent to the doctor. I was the five-year old who had jumped back, seen the dog bite, and would be frightened by dogs for years. Why did some children love them and all I got was nipped at or chased? I could have used some lessons in Pet Etiquette.

ETIQUETTE Etiquette is a word we use from the French language. It is the state of being polite towards others. We are taught to use manners as a life skill (respect). When we add pets to etiquette, we get “Petiquette”. (Okay, “Petiquette” is not a real word, but maybe it ought to be!) While many owners are careful and teach pets to learn manners, it is wise for us all to act respectfully towards animals.

SAFETY TIPS

What should you do when you see a cute cuddly looking animal? At home and school you are taught not to talk to strangers. Is this safety rule the same for an adorable fluffy cat or dog? Your safety is important and so parents, teachers, community leaders, and businesses like pet stores provide great tips. Here are a few common ones to remember.

TIP #1: STOP

Look the situation over. Do not startle, tease, or chase pets. (Scared animals may attack as in the true story above.)

TIP #2: THINK

Keep your face safely away from any pet’s mouth, beak, or claws. Keep back when pets are eating, sleeping, or with their babies.

TIP #3: ASK

If your parent allows, ask permission from the owner before petting any animal. Speaking to the owners first will effect the attitude of the pet. It is the same for a child in a store with a parent. If strangers talk to you, it’s not comfortable. When they talk to your parent and you see they are friends, you feel safer. Pets act the same.

TIP #4: TAKE TIME

Take your time, moving slowly. Allow the animal to smell your hand. Be respectful to the animal and its owner. Focus on what is best for them.

TIP #5: STAY SAFE

Stay away from unknown animals as you would from strangers. Again, the rule is to ask your parents first. Then, get permission from the person in charge of the animal you wish to approach.

THE MORAL OF THE STORY

My fear of dogs was finally overcome and our dog, Tiger, has been a sweet addition to our family of felines. Although once a timid rescued pup, Tiger continues to thrive and our story encourages children. Every pet, young or old, serves a purpose. Some may become therapy dogs (or cats), or work for the police, fire department, while others bring great joy to their own families. Using Pet Etiquette, we can help our furry friends reach their potential as we also move towards our own. You can make a difference.

Meet Monty the Therapy Ferret! Monty is the first member of the newly established Nevada Chapter of Paws for Friendship, Inc. Monty’s mom, Marie Lemay-Neeley, says, “Soon after adopting Monty, we took him along to pick our son up from school and we were amazed to see how happy the children were around him. We knew we couldn’t keep him to ourselves! Everywhere he goes, he brings smiles to people’s face.” Marie is the coordinator for the Nevada Chapter. The Nevada chapter encourages other pet owners to share the unconditional love of their pets with their neighbors. Although ferrets are energetic and relentless little creatures, Monty will need a helping paw or two. A “STOMPY” UPDATE… Yeah! Stompy, my box turtle that refused to hibernate,

FINALLY decided that it was time to go to bed. Although she never did dig her own burrow, she seemed somewhat pleased with the one I made for her. Stompy appeared to be sleeping comfortably until this past weekend. She sure didn’t hibernate very long this year. We’ve had such unseasonably warm weather, poor little turtle must be terribly confused. She arose from her burrow while I was watering in the yard, probably hoping to get a drink from the hose (her favorite activity). Looking so cute with her little “sleepy-eyes” squinting in the sunshine, she was incredibly thirsty. She drank and drank as the water from the hose trickled past her feet. Although she’s still not moving around very fast, she appears to be a little more awake with each passing day. I guess Stompy is ready for spring to be here, no matter what month it actually is. As far as she’s concerned, it’s time to wake up and “stomp” around the yard once more. 34
