are busy months as we prepare for the holidays. It is a time also for reflection as we say “Good bye” to 2014 and look forward to 2015. Our Work To Be Done list sometimes grows faster than our Work Accomplished list. It is easy to minimize our personal accomplishments or the accomplishments of our organization. Year after year it continues – sometimes we’re weary, stressed out, and wonder if it is worth it. Are we making a difference?

The Story of Three Bricklayers is often used by motivational speakers to inspire people to value their individual efforts in the scope of the greater good:

Once upon a time, there were three bricklayers.

When asked, “What are you doing?” The first bricklayer replied: “I’m laying bricks.”

The second bricklayer was asked the same question. He answered: “I’m putting up a wall.”

HOLIDAY PLANTS AND PETS Tis the Season to deck the halls with boughs of holly – unfortunately many of the festive plants associated with the winter holidays are toxic to cats and dogs.

AMARYLLIS - Plant bulb kits featuring Amaryllis, Daffodils, and other plants in the lily family are popular gift items at this time of year. These are very toxic for cats and dogs.

These plants cause severe gastrointestinal problems, cardiac arrhythmias, kidney failure, convulsions and death.

MISTLETOE & HOLLY are holiday plants are considered moderately to severely toxic.

POINSETTIAS –The toxicity of this plant is not as serious as once thought.

It is irritating to the mouth and stomach and sometimes causes vomiting. It is still a good idea to keep them out of your pet’s reach.

CHRISTMAS CACTUS – This is one of the safer choices, it is non toxic to cats and dogs.

There is one more holiday plant to add to the list – THE CHRISTMAS TREE. Pine trees are mildly toxic and can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach. The needles are not easily digested and can cause GI problems and vomiting. More toxic, however, is the standing water in the tree stand. It contains fertilizers and probably harbors mold and bacteria - a few sips can cause your pet to become extremely sick. Keep the plant stand covered so your pets can’t drink the tree water.

Eating any plant material can still cause vomiting and other reactions in your pets. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Thanksgiving

is a day for giving thanks AND for eating huge meals. So many of us are tempted to share special treats with our pets under the table – yet we know it is wrong to do this. There are, however, quite a few holiday foods that are safe and healthy to share with our pets. Here are a few of them:

SWEET POTATOES are full of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants to help fight the effects of aging.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS are rich in fiber and vitamins and have

cancer-fighting properties that can benefit your cat or dog as much as they benefit you. These can be fed as a snack raw or cooked.

CARROTS, fresh and raw, are often mentioned as ideal snack for

dogs. They also have lots of vitamins, fiber and potassium. Cats also enjoy the benefits of carrots but raw carrots can be hard for some cats to digest. It is best to offer them cooked carrots.

CRANBERRIES have vitamins A, B1, B2, and C. They help

maintain healthy urinary tracts. Cats especially can benefit from eating cranberries. If you make your cranberry sauce using fresh cranberries you can safely share this with your dog or cat. Canned or jellied cranberry sauce has too much sugar and should not be given to pets.

PUMPKIN is good for dogs to eat not only because it’s low in calories and bursting with vitamins, beta carotene and fiber, but also because it helps with a dog’s digestion. If Fido is suffering from an upset tummy, diarrhea or constipation, a little bit of pumpkin may be just what the veterinarian ordered. It is important to use fresh or the plain canned variety and not pumpkin pie filling.

Pumpkin pie filling contains sugars and spices.

Offer these as snacks and avoid feeding them too much at one time.

Do not add salt, butter, other dressings, or spices.

Our pets will be thankful for their healthy Thanksgiving snacks.

A day-only facility, the park offers areas for picnicking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and activities for all ages. The Las Vegas Farmers Market (CoSponsored by the City of Las Vegas), featuring farm fresh fruits, vegetables, handmade crafts, and jewelry is also there on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm.

Within the boundaries of this picturesque park lies another treasure. One of Las Vegas’ hidden jewels, “The Horses4Heroes Community Equestrian Center at The Ranch” is a destination that should not be missed. This historic ranch was a working ranch in the 1940’s and has since been transformed into a place where EVERYONE can experience horses and a variety of other animals in a beautiful setting.

All of the animals you would expect to find in a barnyard are there! The Barnyard petting zoo, open 7 days a week, features goats, chickens, donkeys, rabbits, a llama, a sheep, and even a miniature cow that are always ready for some hands-on attention. They enjoy being brushed, fed, photographed, and especially “loved”.

For the horse-lovers in your family, a similar hands-on experience is found in a wide variety of educational and instructional horse activities. For those who have never been around horses, or have never ridden a horse before, The GRJV Studios Ranch offers family-friendly classes to help you learn more about these majestic animals and ride a horse for the very first time! Riding lessons are also offered in both Western and English styles, as well as classes in Trail Riding.

For the younger ones in your family (Ages 2 to 6), HorsePlay is a fun “Mommy and Me” style class which includes 15 minutes of Barnyard time, 15 minutes in the COX Community corral, and 15 minutes with ranch instructors doing various animal/horse activities.

For a unique tour of Floyd Lamb Park, a relaxing carriage ride can also be arranged. Times and prices vary, based on the length of the tour and the number of people in your party. Call ahead to schedule a day and a time!

With so many opportunities being offered to the community, it is clear that bringing the horses back to Tule Springs has been an overwhelming success. While this was part of the overall mission of Horses4Heroes, it was not their only mission. According to Sydney Knott, President and Founder of Horses4Heroes at The Ranch, “our mission was to make horseback riding affordable and accessible to our service members, veterans, survivors, First Responders, as well as nurses, special needs teachers and all of those that serve and sacrifice to keep us safe and free.” Horses4Heroes is fulfilling that mission, serving our “Heroes” every day with affordable recreational, instructional and morale-boosting health and wellness programs.

In addition to providing these well-deserved services, Horses4Heroes was recently recognized for their beginnerfriendly programs for people who have never gotten to pet, groom or ride a horse. Competing nationally in the 100-Day Horse Challenge, Horses4Heroes won a cash prize of $25,000 for introducing the most newcomers to horses in 100 days. The prize money will be used for beginner lesson scholarships for participating Horses4Heroes affiliates that generated the most newcomers. Founder, Sydney Knott commented, “It’s a dream come true to be recognized for our efforts to introduce new people to horses.

Animal Abuse

In a partnership with the Humane Society of the United States and the National Sheriffs’ Association, ICE Black Box, a free mobile app, is helping individuals in all 50 states record and report animal abuse. With the push of a button, video recordings of animal cruelty can be sent directly to the National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse. Information is then filtered and sent on to the appropriate police agency overseeing that specific location.

ICE BlackBox is not meant to replace a 911 call if animal abuse is witnessed, but it will significantly assist law enforcement with video evidence of a reported crime.

This new tool will allow individuals nationwide to be an extra set of eyes watching out for voiceless animal victims.

Zen and the Art of Mindful Dog Walking

M

y understanding of Zen Philosophy is limited, however, it seems to me that ‘mindfulness’ especially can be applied to our relationships with other people as well as to our pets, particularly our dogs!

Significant current research regarding canine intelligence indicates for example that dogs learn language in much the same way as humans and can correctly respond to 3 and 4-step commands quite easily. We also know they dream in much the same way we do and are very effective non-verbal communicators. My dog Princess will stand by her empty water bowl and look up at me, look down at her bowl and then look back at me until I finally snap to what she is trying to tell me. “Hello, I need water.”

A major tenant of Zen Philosophy is an underlying belief that all sentient beings have the same essential nature and, therefore, have the same basic needs and desires. If anyone told me four months ago that I would liken walking my dogs to Zen meditation I would have said, “You’re crazy!” Because ‘crazy’ was what walking my dogs used to be. If I so much as uttered the word, ‘walk.’ Or picked up a dog leash they would literally go bonkers, jumping up on me, doing the happy dance which made it next to impossible to attach the leashes to their collars.

I retired in July and now have the luxury as well as the privilege of walking with Princess and Niki everyday. The 14

consistency of our walking routine has changed how my dogs respond to me because of how I initiate and guide the experience. I don’t say the word ‘walk’ anymore. My dogs simply respond to my non-verbal cues. I put on my walking shoes and get the keys to the pick-up. No more leashing up at the house, instead we walk calmly out to the truck. I open the door they jump up inside where I now keep their leashes. With one easy click they are ready for our walk.

Now I allow my dogs to take the lead.

I follow along and go where they go. I observe their interests. I am fully present in the moment with them. They love to look for and flush out the small desert lizards and jack rabbits we encounter along the way. At a crossroads of the many dirt roads that crisscross the area where we walk I wait to see which way they want to go. This same strategy can be used if walking in a neighborhood too. At the corner just wait to see where your dog wants to go.

Another important aspect of Zen Philosophy involves conduct. Keeping our dogs and others safe by obeying leash laws is an important aspect of mindful walking. We can’t predict what people or dogs will do in dangerous or unfamiliar circumstances. It is better to be safe than sorry.

In the past I was often in a hurry and walking my dogs was just another task to check off on my “to do list”. I often checked and answered emails on my phone while

walking them. I no longer do that so that I can devote mindful attention to my dogs.

One appropriate use of my phone on my walks is to use an app to count the miles I am walking to earn donations for my favorite animal shelters.

The physical benefits of walking our dogs daily are well known for people and dogs.

Now I realize my daily walks with my dogs are also good for my mental health as well. Our walks have become special contemplative times where I experience greater understanding for my dogs and for myself. Our walks allow me to relax and focus on my intentions with purpose. I find that this type of daily meditation helps me to be more productive for the day and more in tune with my dogs. The time I spend with them has helped me to recognize how much my dogs need this time to follow the scents they are sensitive to, create their own games, and to pursue their own interests.

Our mindful walks are creating a direct opening for intuitive meditation for me and are having a calming affect on my dogs.

5 Simple Ways To Avoid The Veterinary Emergency Room This Holiday Season:

Never give your pets “treats” from the table. Doing so can cause a very serious illness called pancreatitis, which means inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreatitis can originate from many factors, however dietary indiscretion is the most common cause. Common clinical signs can include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort and lethargy. Keep extra dog treats nearby this holiday season, to discourage pets from begging and family members from giving people food. Also, keep in mind bringing in the new year with alcoholic beverages may be fun for us, but it is not for animals and can be very toxic.

Keep an extra close eye on new puppies and kittens, as holiday decorations can quickly be eaten. The last thing anyone wants is “Puppy’s First Christmas” to be remembered by hospitalization and possible surgery for removal of a foreign object. Foreign objects are anything not digestible by your pets body, which increase in availability especially during the holiday season (strings of lights, ornaments, various holiday plants, candles).

When celebrating with extended family, this may not be the best time to try to socialize your “semiaggressive, cautious, nervous” dog or cat. Yes, everyone wants to show off their babies, but this can quickly turn into an emergency, as a nervous animal around small children or strangers may bite. Yes, our pets are just as much a part of the family as everyone else, however be cautious when introducing them to new family members. Also, keep in mind that in the hustle and bustle dogs and cats can easily be injured, simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Furthermore, getting your pet microchipped is another good idea, just in case fido decides to take a holiday adventure through an unattended open door!

Storage Ideas For Pet Stuff

It’s hard enough trying to stay on

top of picking up after yourself and family, but when you have pets it makes it even more time consuming since they can’t pick up for themselves. Well, at least I haven’t been able to train mine to do that. Their toys decorate your floors throughout the house and those items that you need for them on a daily basis can clutter up your counters and cabinets if not organized. So what can you do to help make your life with Fido easier?

Here’s a couple ideas for you.

Have one shelf in your storage pantry just for their things. I like to use clear plastic boxes to keep things that are not boxed or too small to stack. Like their chew bones, extra toys I’ve bought when they were on sale, vitamins, medication and grooming items. I use a separate box for each type so when I need something I can just take out the box I need.

The dollar stores have small to medium ones which work perfect.

I’m real big on clear plastic for all my storage items. I hate having to drag out a box to see what’s in it. If you rather use something more decorative, you can place a plastic sleeve on the front and list what’s in the box.

Now how do you tackle their toys? There’s really no perfect way around toys being on the floor and having to pick them up at the end of the night. You want them to be able to keep themselves occupied and play when they want to. So either you have them where they can get to them or you pull a couple out of the closet for them each day. I like mine to be able to pick what they want to play with and figure what’s the difference between gathering up two toys or ten toys. Plus the bending over gives me a little exercise.

If you’re going to have them within their reach, start by having just one place where they get put away each night. A quick grab and drop is better than stepping on one of their squeaky toys in the middle of the night and almost scarring yourself to death. There are all kinds of attractive containers you can use. If you don’t have a chewer, baskets and vintage wooden crates can look nice. If you get one with a handle, you can carry it around with you when doing your toy run.

If you don’t have room in your pantry, over the door shoe racks work great for smaller items. They’re inexpensive, take up little space, and keep everything visible through the plastic pockets.

Place the items where you use them. Make it convenient to have it within arm’s length versus searching for it. I brush the girls in the yard, so I have a doggie box with their brushes and combs. Since I’ve put them outside, I’ve been so much better brushing them. I always have my first cup of coffee on the patio and they get a quick brush every day. When I used to bathe them myself, I had a plastic box with everything I needed under the sink in the guest bath.

How about a large decorative ice trough? Cut down a wine barrel. A trip to an antique store can get your creative juices flowing to find something unique. In my master retreat, I have my baby rocker that I put the toys they play with in the morning when I’m getting ready.

If you have a chewer and nothing on the floor will work, or have more than you know what to do with and just can’t throw one of their favorites out, look for a hidden corner you can put them in. I had mine behind a chair until the pile kept growing. I could never throw a favorite out. My husband would actually sew them up.

Want them out of sight but easy to get to? Storage ottomans are perfect and dual functional. Pull their toys out and get your feet up after a long day. Vintage suitcases can add a nice touch. They stack, close and very chic. You can even sort their toys by suitcase.

One for bones, one for plush toys and one for their squeaky toys. Picnic baskets come in all shapes and sizes. I love the old time ones.

Also by containing them in something, you won’t suck one up with the vacuum.

When I had my Maddy, she loved to take her toys outside. It was so darn cute to see her grab a toy from her pile, run around shaking it up and then head for the door. By the end of the night there could be ten to fifteen out there. Each night we would do what we called a baby round-up and then put them back in her pile for the next day’s run.

Hope this gave you a few easy and clever ideas to keep your counters, cabinets and floors clutter free.

Our community

continues to provide so many exciting opportunities to learn about Nevada’s love for animals. The diversity of those expressions of love are seemingly endless. One such expression is found with the local chapter of Puppy Up! Foundation (formerly known as 2 Million Dogs) and Rhondda Atlas. The Puppy Up! Foundation began with one mile, one city, one person, and two dogs. The founder, Luke Robinson, lost his beloved Great Pyrenees, Malcolm, to cancer. In March 2008, Luke and his two dogs, Hudson and Murphy, walked from Austin to Boston (2,000 miles) to raise awareness of how cancer touches everyone. His vision: If two dogs could walk over 2,000 miles then surely 2 million dogs could walk two miles to raise awareness about cancer. Rhondda met Luke in Boston after he completed his walk. His journey had an impact on her and she followed him on facebook. After her beloved dog, Ace, died of cancer Rhondda became determined to bring that awareness to Nevada.

Canine cancer affects one out of three dogs and their cancers are often the same ones humans develop. Veterinarian oncologists believe there are between 4 and 8 million new cases of cancer in companion animals every year. Pets are exposed to many of the same environmental risks as people. The malignant cells are biologically comparable to humans. By increasing the number of comparative oncology studies, pets will have access to the latest drug candidates. The Puppy Up! Foundation Early Warning Signs is building a partnership between the pet and people cancer community. Money raised is used to write grants for research, awareness, and education.

There is a way for you to get involved in this expression of Nevada’s love for animals. Rhondda coordinates a Puppy Up! Walk every year. This year’s walk will be held on November 15, 2014, beginning at 10:00 am, at Bruce Trent Park. Grab a friend or ten, your dogs, get some sponsors, and join the fight against cancer.

LUMPS – Not all lumps and bumps are cancerous in dogs. There are sebaceous cysts, lipomas, and warts all of which are benign but if you detect a growth on your dog it’s important to have it checked out by a veterinarian and if warranted, aspirated and biopsied.

LESIONS – Scratches and abscesses are not uncommon for the normal, active dog but the sores that don’t heal can be of concern.

LAMENESS – Bone cancer is typically found in larger breed dogs like Great Danes, Bernese Mountain dogs, Rottweilers, Boxers, Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, and Great Pyrenees and the primary early indication is prolonged limping or favoring a limb or side. Other types of cancers can also cause persistent lameness.

APPETITE LOSS – If your dog shows no interest in eating or their daily consumption has declined for several days, take them to a vet.

5.

LETHARGY – Tiring out easily, unwillingness to exercise and loss of interest in normal daily activities can be an early sign of cancer.

6.

WEIGHT LOSS – Not to be confused with loss of appetite. Cachexia, or emaciation, is often associated with cancer and can occur even if your dog is still eating normally. So if your dog is inexplicably losing weight, consult a veterinarian.

7.

LOUD ODOR – A very strong and offensive smell can sometimes be a byproduct of tumors in the mouth and nasal cavity.

8.

LOSS OF NORMAL BODY FUNCTIONS – Dogs having difficulty voiding or defecation or unusual urine or feces should be looked at.

9.

BLEEDING OR BLOODY DISCHARGE – Blood present in vomit, stool, and nasal discharge are cause for serious concern and although not always telltale signs of cancer, your dog should be examined as soon as possible.

A CHILD’S PERSPECTIVE

THEN CAME BOB

As Thanksgiving approaches many of us get sentimental over our childhood memories. We thankfully remember those who have added to our lives.

Reflecting back to elementary school, I recall a friend named Faith. At scout meetings and camping trips, she seemed kind, polite, and outgoing.

Recently chatting with Faith back in Ohio, I was surprised to hear she had actually been a rather shy child. Years later, childhood came to a close for Faith and she met a young man, Larry, who became her husband.

Bob was perhaps the second greatest love of Faith’s life. Larry and Faith adopted Bob, a large somewhat energetic Golden Retriever.

What might seem goofy to some may be therapeutic to others and Larry eventually recognized Bob had a capacity beyond the companionship animals normally give. About that same time Larry became acquainted with therapy dog visitations surrounding a hospital stay of his father. Difficult situations can be inspirational. Larry was very appreciative of these canine visits so he took action and initiated Bob’s career.

Through the caring hearts of Faith and Larry, Bob became a Pet Pals participant in Cleveland.

Bob was supplied with training by experts and a lighthearted assortment of hats ranging from firefighter to ladybug from Faith. People laughed and lives were touched as Bob encouraged hugs and smiles and defused fear in patients, many of whom were children. For six years Bob with Faith and Larry gave over 500 hours of dedicated visitation. They embraced the joys of Bob’s successes and at times had to accept the loss of patients whom they had grown to love.

THE END OF THE STORY It seems we all have people we can remember who taught us lessons in life. Family or friends who volunteered with selfless motives exemplify the compassion we hope to pass on to our children.

As the holidays arrive once more, let’s remember stories of real people who gave from their hearts; normal people like Faith and Larry who rose as heroes. Bob is gone now, but not his legacy. There can be great joy in giving. Demonstrating genuine compassion with our children can fill young hearts with courage to reach out.

Let’s teach our children to be productive members of society, it is good to convey giving is more than sharing money; it starts with being thankful and is instilled as we spend time and energy listening, with smiles, and hugs.

To some divorcing couples, choosing who keeps

the loyal dog or frisky feline can become a major concern. They understand it is typical for a court to make decisions on child custody, dividing debts, assigning assets and ordering support. But will the court need to decide who gets custody of Fido or Fluffy?

There are few laws governing custody, visitation or support of a pet.

In fact, in all states, pets are considered property, no different than a refrigerator or a car. Property that is awarded to one party or another is based on the rules applying to the division of property. To the eyes of the court, your fun-loving family pets are treated the same as furniture, even though they are typically very much part of the family unit.

PROVING WHO IS THE OWNER

Litigation concerning who should get the pet depends largely on which party can prove ownership. There are a few factors that can be presented as evidence to the court to support the ownership contention. No single piece of evidence resolves the dispute. The more evidence one party has to support the contention, the more likely it is that party will be awarded the pet.

Supportive evidence can include:

• Any written agreement as to who owns the pet and who will be the owner in the event of a divorce;

• A receipt showing who bought the pet;

• Receipts for veterinary care;

• Receipts for grooming, licensing, food, training and any other expense

• Witnesses such as neighbors who can say which party was generally the one to take the pet for a walk or play with the pet.

In many cases, possession is 90 percent of the law. Anyone in a divorce seeking custody of a pet should make certain that if they move out of the marital residence they take the beloved pet with them, or else risk waiving their right to ownership.

PET LAWS MAY BE CHANGING

With more than 50 million households having either a dog or cat, the courts have started to make some changes. Even though some courts have recognized that they cannot equate a pet with a couch, divorcing couples cannot count on that. Even if a court awards one party visitation, there is no law and no precedent that can be used to enforce the order. Unlike custodial and visitation orders governing children, the party with custody of an animal can simply refuse to allow visitation and the non-custodial party has no recourse for enforcing it. Because of this, many judges are reluctant to even have such a clause in a divorce decree.

A few years ago, Wisconsin legislators proposed a bill that would allow for custody, visitation and support payments for pets, but it failed to pass.

Courts in both Texas and Alaska have issued orders that establish visitation schedules for a pet to spend time with each of the former spouses. These judges have used a “best interest in the pet” analysis in making their decision, taking into consideration the age and health of the animal, which party has the home that gives the best quality of life for the pet, who has more time to give attention to the pet, and who has the financial resources to pay for the vet bills and such.

Courts are often so overwhelmed with case load in general, deciding more important issues relevant to the divorce, such as property and debt division, alimony, child custody, visitation and support, they do not want to be waste precious judicial resources having to decide what happens to the family pet, as well.

Until laws change and courts begin to recognize pets as more than just property, couples are strongly urged to create their own agreement as to how they will deal with support, custody and visitation of their pet after the divorce.

WHAT IS A PUPPY MILL and why are they so bad?

Throughout one’s lifetime,

it’s likely that we’ve stepped inside a puppy store and admired the irresistible pups that resided within.

It’s also feasible that some of our most loved and cherished dogs were purchased from that same store without us thinking about the parents of that puppy. All we knew was that we wanted to bring that charming furry friend home to join our own families.

What we didn’t know was that same puppy’s mother was living in unimaginable conditions lacking ample space, exercise, medical care, grooming, nutrients, love and sadly, a name. If we met her, chances are that we wouldn’t recognize the breed suffering under a coat of matted fur, scarred paws and countless injuries they’ve sustained in a cage that is barely big enough to turn around.

chances are that the shop doesn’t advertise the living conditions of the mother. Alternatively, some believe that dogs from a rescue group aren’t as good, however nothing is further from truth.

Every dog deserves a chance and rescued dogs from shelters or rescue groups aren’t any different. They are trainable, lovable and just as loyal (if not more so).

For those who prefer purebreds, breed specific rescue groups are happy to place their purebred dogs with loving families.

Keep this in mind. There’s never a shortage of dogs and we certainly don’t need to rely on puppy mills to supply more of them. By donating to and/or adopting from your local rescue group, you’ll help save lives and hopefully one day, these unfortunate dogs that live in puppy mills will find a good home and won’t be forced to produce more “inventory.”

For every dog you adopt from a shelter or rescue group, you’ll not only save its life but you’ll make room for another to be rescued. It’s a win-win for everyone.

This is the so-called life they live at a puppy mill or backyard breeder where they are forced to breed before it’s medically safe for them to do so, often resulting in many health issues for both them and their litter.

While some puppy stores do use licensed breeders, many others get their “inventory” from these dreadful mills. And sadly, many of these puppies are born with serious illnesses. A shop owner may boast that if the pup is sick, they can be exchanged for another. And at that moment, the fate of the sick pup is sealed and euthanasia often follows.

After all, a sick pup is an expensive pup and these stores are in it for the money.

So, why do people buy from puppy stores? Some may not realize where these puppies were born. Let’s face it, it’s easy to fall in love with an innocent puppy and 38
