Wintertime Weight Gain and Pet Nutrition During the winter months, we ALL tend to put on a little weight. People and pets typically put on a few pounds as the days get shorter and the temperatures dip. We tend to blame our extra pounds on those glorious holiday meals and too much pie. But what about our pet’s weight gain? Why are they looking so plump? The easiest answer to this question is “survival”. Before our dogs and cats became domesticated, they needed to prepare for winter by fattening up. They needed the extra calories to create fat for warmth and as a food reserve when game was scarce. Now, with most of our pets living indoors, they no longer need those extra calories. Unfortunately, our pets are unaware of this fact. They still have an innate increase in appetite as winter approaches and may need a little assistance in keeping their weight in check. Like people, successfully reducing your pet’s weight requires less calories and more exercise. Since all pets require a different number of calories, sometimes determining the correct caloric intake can be difficult. Reviewing the serving suggestions on your pet’s food bag is a great place to start.If you reduce the amount of food you are feeding, you will need to ensure that your pet’s minimum protein needs are still being met. A recommendation from your veterinarian is often helpful if you are unsure. Treats should also be carefully rationed, amounting to no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake.

AND, don’t forget to exercise! Whether it’s a rambunctious game of fetch or a brisk winter’s walk, the fresh air and the exercise will be healthy for you both.

You’ve waited all year, and the time is finally here! On Sunday November 15th, celebrate the life of devoted canine citizen and service dog, Pele, at the 2nd Annual Paw It Forward Las Vegas. Pele was a Golden Retriever who in addition to being an amazing service dog for his mom, Kelly McMahon, also rehabilitated abused shelter pups, helped children overcome their fears of animals (and of reading), cheered up the sick with his amazing “Pele Power”, and touched the lives of everyone who met him. He left us too soon, but his spirit lives on. Paw It Forward will be held at Smarty Paws Canine Coaching at 4544 W Russell Rd, Las Vegas NV 89118 on Sunday November 15th from 11 am to 4 pm. 100% of proceeds will benefit Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas. Hearts Alive Village is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to secure loving and stable homes for dogs and cats at risk of being lost in the shelter system. Through a variety of programs such as Kendall’s Kupboard (a pet food pantry), and Solutions over Surrenders which gives pet owners access to resources like training, financial assistance, and more, Hearts Alive aims to keep pets in their original homes whenever possible. They provide Humane Education to youth groups throughout the valley, and transitional housing for a domestic abuse survivor. In June of this year, they opened their first adoption center where potential families can meet rescued animals currently in foster homes, and a pet supply store so that the organization can eventually be self sustaining. They are now in the process of developing their Veterans program, and Seniors for Seniors. Paw It Forward will feature music by Community Productions, Musical Paws with Kyle Ashmore, microchipping by West Charleston Animal Hospital, dog photography by Go Dog Photo, Bows and Toes by Angel Tails Dog Grooming, Barks and Crafts, event photography by TFG Photography and Confess Media, human food by Raising Cane’s, Villa Pizza and Jamba Juice, dog treats, a Silent “Pawction” and mega raffle. Four Legged Friends Are Welcome At Lake Mead

ou and your pet are welcome to come and enjoy Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Junior Ranger, Cooper, a teacup Yorkshire terrier, is part of the education and outreach team at Lake Mead. He helps educate visitors, especially his four legged friends, about the pet friendly park. Take a hike along the Historic Railroad Trail, have a picnic, go for a jog on the River Mountains Loop Trail, go camping, take a cruise on a boat or take a dip in the lake. Most activities at Lake Mead are pet friendly. Dogs and other pets are allowed throughout the park, but there are some safety considerations that pet owners need to heed before heading out for a day at Lake Mead.

• All pets must be kept on a leash at all times, not to exceed six-feet in length. • Pets should never be left unattended because animals, such as coyotes and mountain lions, are natural predators that live in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. • Pets are not allowed in buildings or where it is signed ‘no pets.’ • Remember to bring plenty of water for you and your pet. • Always pick up after your pet and help keep Lake Mead’s beaches, trails and backcountry clean and unspoiled. Although Lake Mead National Recreation Area welcomes our furry friends please remember to recreate responsibly. The park is home to rare plants and animals like the desert tortoise, desert bighorn sheep, razorback sucker fish, Las Vegas bearpoppy and the silverleaf sunray, all of which are endangered or not found anywhere else in the world. Help us preserve nature so the next generation can enjoy the scenic, historic, scientific and other important features of the park.

As more states legalize marijuana to varying degrees it is important for pet owners to be aware of the dangers it poses for animals. While marijuana is rarely deadly it can cause serious illness in pets. One of the most common ways animals will ingest marijuana is when it has been left out and unattended. Although dogs more frequently will ingest marijuana this way, it can happen with cats also. This may happen when the plant itself has been left out or when it has been incorporated into baked goods which some pets find especially appealing. Another way is by inhaling the smoke. Beware that marijuana brownies are particularly unsafe because they include chocolate, an additional poison to dogs and cats, acting as a potent stimulant that can affect nervous systems negatively, causing illness or even death. Plus, dogs are attracted to the smell of chocolate as well as other baked goods, which makes them even more dangerous. It is crucial to get animals who have been exposed to marijuana to a veterinarian immediately so their heart rate and body temperature can be monitored. Depending on their body’s response to the drug, their heart rate may be very low or very high, both of which can have life-threatening consequences. In a recent survey of U.S. veterinarians conducted by Pets Best, the third most common toxin for which veterinarians treated dogs was marijuana. and as you’re starting to think about decorating, why not also consider including your pets in the festivities. Even though they don’t know the difference between a blanket with snowmen or one with bones, it’s fun for us and a change for them. If you’ve added a new furry family member this year, remember they have not had a chance to be introduced to your holiday décor so you might need to make some changes. Just because Fido didn’t touch the tree, doesn’t mean Fifi won’t. Just as form follows function when decorating, when you have pets, décor follows safety. If you don’t want to store it, throw it in the wash and donate it to a shelter. Believe me the dogs and cats won’t care if their new soft cozy beds have snowmen on them.

Pets can find the smells and textures of holiday decorations very interesting which can make for a dangerous time. You can still make your home beautiful for the holidays; just remember to decorate with your furry friends in mind.

# 2 - My pups love pillows; you could call them Pillow Princesses; so I switch out the plain pillow cases with holiday themed ones. # 3 – Change their everyday food and water bowls to

ones with some holiday cheer.

# 4 – Don’t want to fuss with changing their bowls? How about a fun mat? I use plastic placemats from the Dollar Store. They’re easy to clean, store and inexpensive. This is actually fun to do for the different holidays throughout the year. # 5 – Along with her pillows, my Matilda loves beach blankets. She is constantly balling them up until they are just right. Then when she’s done with hers off to her sister’s bed for a re-making. A quick and easy switch out. All these things don’t have to be holiday specific if you want to leave them out longer. Just look for designs with pine cones, winter scenes, or snowflakes.

# 1 – I love glass ornaments but they can be a real safety hazards. Make pet-friendly ornaments out of twigs or paper decorations dyed with food coloring. There are also many shatter proof plastic and metal ornaments to use. Don’t like the colors, simple non-toxic spray paint will change the color to match your tree’s color scheme. # 2- Tinsel, makes a tree sparkle but is often fatal when ingested. Instead make a paper garland. I had a client that spray painted different small plastic ornaments that she then strung together. Cleaver idea and very cute. # 3 – Use battery operated lights instead of electric. # 4 – Consider moving some of your decorations up and out of the reach of tails and teeth. I know if you have cats this can be a bit more challenging. Have you ever decorated above your kitchen cabinets? My girlfriend does it every year and it looks wonderful. # 5 – Decorate behind glass doors. Consider adding some holiday cheer to your china cabinet, entertainment unit, or glass kitchen cabinets. I put out a few of my Holiday Barbie’s in my entertainment unit each year. I’m a bit of a collector so it takes a couple years before I see the same ones again. # 6 - Give pets their own sets of holiday toys. Then anytime Fido goes for something hanging from the tree, quickly hand him one of his own special toys to show him that’s what he should be playing with.

Close your eyes and think of the word shrimp – what images or thoughts come to mind? Did you see or think of a table, plate, or food, etc? Or did you see or think of an aquarium, plants and water? I guess being asked to do this in a magazine about pets gave you a hint about where we’re going with this. Recently someone told me about their pet shrimp and how their size makes them an excellent choice for a small aquarium. Typically shrimp tanks are small, 10 gallons are very common. However, a smaller tank such as the desktop models (1.5 to 3 gallons) is sufficient if you plan to have only a few shrimp. This smaller arrangement could hold 2 to 4 shrimp or 2 shrimp and 2 companion fish such as guppies or tetras. Two possible selections to include in a beginner tank are ghost shrimp and cherry shrimp. They’re hardy and can tolerate a range of water conditions and temperatures.

You can also add shrimp to a larger aquarium. There are a number of benefits for adding them to your tank: – They’re scavengers and can help keep algae levels down – They help to keep levels of ammonia and nitrate low – Their size and scavenging behaviors makes it possible to add quite a few shrimp without adding to the bio load

Shrimp come in many colors and varieties. Price range varies from less than a dollar to over a hundred dollars. They can be very entertaining as they eat, swim and move around.

ew horse owners are sometimes surprised by the amount of care horses require. Just like your automobile, horses need routine maintenance. A minor problem can quickly escalate if not caught and treated promptly. The easiest way to maintain your horse is to design a health care plan with your veterinarian.

Confining our horses in stalls or paddocks, while convenient for us, is contrary to the way horses evolved. The horse’s natural habitat is open grassland where he will wander for miles grazing frequently. His stomach is designed to digest small amounts of forage throughout the day. Horses cannot regurgitate; once food enters the stomach it cannot come back up. Horses are prone to abdominal pain, or colic. A colicky horse will stop eating, start to sweat, look back at his stomach, paw, or try to roll. He may show other signs as well. Colic is a medical emergency; contact your veterinarian. Colic is often a symptom of other problems such as an abrupt change in diet, ulcers, parasites, or poor dental health.

yourself. Heavy infestations can block intestines and should be left to your veterinarian to treat. A horse with a dry, dull coat may be suffering from parasites. Horses are at risk for many diseases that can be easily prevented by administering vaccinations. When horses are stabled together, infections can spread quickly. Waiting to deal with a disease may be too late for your horse. At a minimum, horses should be immunized for tetanus, various strains of equine encephalitis and influenza, and rabies. In the Las Vegas Valley, mosquitos are testing positive for the West Nile virus that can also infect horses. Older horses that have “been there, done that” are a good investment for the novice, but seniors can suffer from minor aches and pains. A maintenance program of joint supplements and even injections can help your horse stay comfortable and carry you safely for years. We have briefly discussed some of the health issues you must be aware of when owning a horse. Your veterinarian will know of other concerns specific to your area.

In the wild, a horse’s feet are trimmed naturally by moving over rough terrain. The hooves are composed of keratin, a tough hornlike material that wraps around and protects the bones inside the foot. Like our fingernails, hooves grow and must be trimmed or shod every five to six weeks. A good farrier, or blacksmith, will help keep your horse sound. Over time, a horse’s teeth wear and develop sharp, jagged edges making it difficult to chew. Partially chewed food cannot be adequately digested. Sharp points on the teeth must be “floated” or filed down every six months to a year by an equine dentist or veterinarian. Older horses that are underweight are often suffering from dental problems. Horses - like dogs and cats - are susceptible to internal parasites, which are often transferred from horse to horse by grazing infected pastures. A veterinarian can help you develop a worming schedule that you can administer 20

HOLIDAY WISHLIST Gift giving is a joy yet finding the perfect gift for the loved ones on your list is sometimes challenging. Many of us have added our pets to our Christmas gift list. In fact, a recent petMD survey showed that 86 percent plan to buy a present for their pet this holiday season.

Though we haven’t had the opportunity to speak with each of your pets personally to ask them what they want for Christmas, we’ve asked a few pets to share their wish list with you.

Toby’s Wish List Dear Santa Paws, I’ve been an awfully good boy this year for the most part! Here is my Christmas List: A Doggy Blanket - I love my bed but a doggy blanket would just add a little extra warmth and be so cozy this winter! I would like a matching leash and collar. Maybe I’ll ask Grandma Geri to get me the ones that light up so I’l l be safe when I take my early morning and late evening walks. They even have illuminated tags for collars. I wonder if I could add a doggy backpack for when we go hiking. Toys – I would like some new toys. I love my “stuffies” but most of the ones I have now have lost their stuffing and are headless. Mom performs surgeries on them but many of them are beyond repair. I’m adding interactive puzz les to my list – that will make my Mom very happy. She likes to challenge me. She always tells me how smart I am when I put the puzz le together. Of course, I love my treats but Mom & Dad are really careful about rationing them since I have a slow metabolism – BOL! Mom added a treat ball to my list so I have to work for my treats. I’m okay with that because I enjoy challenges.

’s Wish List y d w o R Dear Santa Paws, I’ve been a good boy … I’d say I was way more nice than I was naughty! I want some new cardboard cat scratchers –I’ve used mine so much that they are falling apart. They come in many shapes and sizes. I like the flat kind but one that attaches to the wall might be fun to try out. Another collapsible tunnel – I have two and my mom tied them together. I love to race through them and surprise everyone. I think tying another tunnel will add to the “surprise factor”. I want some new toys, too. I’m sleeping more now that I’m older but I still have bursts of energy and having a variety of toys will help me channel my curiosity and energy. I love little surprises. I would like to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas – a small gift every day for 12 days. You could bring small items like a laser mouse, stuffed mice, poles with feathers, ribbons or other fascinating items attached are lots of fun, plastic balls with bells inside, balls filled with catnip or treats. Last year you got us something that wasn’t on my gift list. It was a cat tree - both my brother and I use it all the time. We love it! This year I heard my mom talking about asking you to get us something else not on my list. A cat stroller –she says she wants to take us for walks. I’m not sure if I’ll like this gift. However, it might be exciting to find out more about life outside my home.

I can’t wait for Christmas to come!

hese little guys are the perfect pet for lovers of quiet and variety who also want to be invested in the care of their companions. Despite the name, Hermit Crabs are very social. It is best to have two or more. A proper home should be large enough to hold in humidity but still let in fresh air. They breathe through hardened gills and cannot breathe properly unless the air is humid enough. Adding natural moss is a great way to increase humidity and also provide food for your “hermie”. The proper temperature is very important. Water is essential: you will need to provide two bowls of water, one filled with fresh water and one filled with salt water (use aquarium sea salt). They need a layer of substrate so they can easily dig and build caves to relieve stress, hide and molt. Your choice of food is also very important. Hermit crabs do not like to eat the same meal twice in a row. They are omnivorous and enjoy variety in their diet – you can feed them hermit crab food and add chopped apples, grapes, bananas and vegetables including dark green kale and broccoli. Clean and varied food is the key. Hermit crabs can live ten years or more with proper maintenance. Hermit crabs love to climb and play. Natural toys (no painted toys) are a must. Rocks, seashells, broken pots and plants make a very festive home. You will need to provide shells for your hermit crab.

They have a soft abdomen and use shells as protection. As they grow they need bigger shells. You need at least three shells per crab. Keep a variety of extra shells in their homes at all times. Shell selection is very important to them; they are very picky and may carry around an old one while trying out a new one. New shells should be ten to fifteen percent larger than the current shells. Your hermit crab will love to play with you. When they are awake let them climb over you while you read or watch TV. Be careful not to let them fall. Also, you may get pinched. They are crabs, after all. You will be fine. Hermit crabs are fascinating pets and require commitment. There are many websites dedicated to these little ones. Dig in and do the research before getting one for yourself or for your family – especially your children. They are, however, worth the effort.

CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE is caused by a heart defect present at birth and can be found on your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first veterinary visit by listening for a heart murmur or abnormal rhythm. Congenital heart diseases are commonly observed in puppies compared to kittens. PatentDuctus-Arteriosis, PDA is commonly inherited in smaller breeds such as Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese and Pomeranians, whereas Pulmonic-Stenosis and SubaorticStenosis are seen in larger breeds such as Golden Retrievers, German shepherds, English bulldogs, Boxers and Beagles. If your pet has a heart murmur, it is important to get routine exams to see if the murmur persists. Early detection is critical. Certain defects are surgically correctable, and treatment should be performed before progression and the onset irreversible damage. MITRAL VALVE ENDOCARDIOSIS, also called Myxomatous Valvular Disease, is the most common acquired canine heart disease accounting up to 75% in middle aged to older dogs. Endocardiosis is hereditary in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Dachshunds, but also is seen in Chihuahuas, Yorkies, and Maltese. Cavaliers can acquire Endocardisosis as puppies, but the typical age of onset occurs around 10 years. Degenerative changes of the mitral valve lead to left sided heart enlargement, which, if not managed, eventually leads to congestive heart failure. Though a progressive disease, not all dogs will develop clinical signs at the same time. 34

DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY is a condition affecting heart muscle. The muscle stretches; overtime losing its ability to efficiently contract thus decreasing blood flow to the rest of the body. Large purebreds are mainly affected such as Great Danes, Newfoundlands, St. Bernards, and Great Pyrenees. Causes can be due to nutritional deficiencies, toxins, infectious diseases, and is genetically seen more in Doberman pinschers and Irish wolfhounds. FELINE HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY is a condition leading to thickening of muscle making up the walls of the heart affecting the ability of the muscle to properly relax, eventually leading to left sided heart enlargement. Causes of HCM are unknown, but are mostly seen in middle-aged males in DHS (domestic shorthair), Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and Persians. Approximately 50% of cats will not have a heart murmur or even exhibit signs such as coughing. HCM cats have increased risk for blood clot formation within the heart. Clot pieces may break off and go to distant locations of the body most commonly the back legs; this leads to severe weakness and pain in the limbs. If your pet has a heart murmur or known CARDIAC DISEASE, common signs to look for are trouble breathing, coughing, exercise intolerance, and fainting. Though these conditions are progressive, they can be medically managed long term. It is important

to have routine exams to monitor progression. Your veterinarian will assess their condition by listening to their chest and taking x-rays to evaluate lungs, heart size and shape. Advanced diagnostics include an echocardiogram and EcG, allowing visualization of the heart chamber sizes, blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm. Try to avoid strenuous exercise or stressful situations for your pet. Avoiding salty treats, and using a diet that is moderately restricted in salt is also ideal for cardiac patients.

Thanksgiving

is a day for giving thanks AND for eating huge meals. So many of us are tempted to share special treats with our pets under the table – yet we know it is wrong to do this. There are, however, quite a few holiday foods that are safe and healthy to share with our pets. Here are a few of them:

SWEET POTATOES are full of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants to help fight the effects of aging. BRUSSELS SPROUTS are rich in fiber and vitamins and have cancer-fighting properties that can benefit your cat or dog as much as they benefit you. These can be fed as a snack raw or cooked.

CARROTS, fresh and raw, are often mentioned as ideal snack for dogs. They also have lots of vitamins, fiber and potassium. Cats also enjoy the benefits of carrots but raw carrots can be hard for some cats to digest. It is best to offer them cooked carrots. CRANBERRIES have vitamins A, B1, B2, and C. They help maintain healthy urinary tracts. Cats especially can benefit from eating cranberries. If you make your cranberry sauce using fresh cranberries you can safely share this with your dog or cat. Canned or jellied cranberry sauce has too much sugar and should not be given to pets.

PUMPKIN is good for dogs to eat not only because

it’s low in calories and bursting with vitamins, beta carotene and fiber, but also because it helps with a dog’s digestion. If Fido is suffering from an upset tummy, diarrhea or constipation, a little bit of pumpkin may be just what the veterinarian ordered. It is important to use fresh or the plain canned variety and not pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling contains sugars and spices. Offer these as snacks and avoid feeding them too much at one time. Do not add salt, butter, other dressings, or spices.
