Turco-Sino approaches! Only five years ago Turkey developed a fast and growing interest in the Chinese market and the key to the market was Intertextile. The first initiation started with a few companies. It doubled in the following year. The doubling continued almost for four years and the number of Turkish exhibitors at this fair reached almost to 50. It is 27 this year but it still represents the largest foreign and national participation in this largest Asian home textile show. Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles fair, Asia’s leading home textiles and accessories trade fair will take place at the brandnew National Exhibition and Convention Centre (Shanghai) from 26 – 28 August, with over 1,400 exhibitors from around 30 countries and regions scheduled to take part. Turkish exhibitors will showcase a broad range of products. Home Textile Exports magazine has been attending this fair for more than 10 years as the only Turkish publication to follow up the Turkish exhibitors and to cover this important event. We will be busier with the next issue which will be shipped to MoOD-Brussels, Heimtextil-Russia, CIFF-Shanghai and The Hotel Show Dubai. September is always one of the busiest times for the home textile industry and we never skip any of these important events. We wish lucrative business for all involved parties.

Brentano Delivers Pattern at the HD Expo

heeling, Ill. — Brentano delivered pattern at the Hospitality Design Expo in Las Vegas. Using a dramatic neutral palette, the textile design house demonstrated their skill with texture and motif in an array of new fabrics from the spring Studio collection and upcoming fall Jubilee collection. Brentano earned a coveted IIDA/HD Product Design Award — Brentano’s sixth such award in eight consecutive years — for Equinox, a performance upholstery with a starry, tessellation pattern that undulates from dark to light and back to dark in a metaphor for day and night. “We always look forward to HD, and winning an IIDA/HD Award is always an honor, but it’s especially significant this year. I’m thankful the judges recognized Equinox; but to me, it’s also recognition for Iris [Wang, Design Director,] and her milestone 25 years of dedication to hospitality design,” said National Sales Manager Jeff Frank.

Trevira Square brings knitted fabrics for the Contract Market to MoOD - Piovano Italy

G

iorgio Piovano’s innovative collections unites three worlds with its products that could, up to now, not be united: Trevira CS yarns, the technique of knitting and the contract market. Knitted fabrics have been on offer for the interior for some time, but thanks to the use of Trevira CS yarns, Piovano can respond to the highest demands of the contract market: the fabrics are flame retardant, washable, lightfast and they have the dimensional stability that was unthinkable before. With a Martindale of 35000 rubs they are suited for upholstery in the contract market. Piovano also offers fabrics for window covering and for decoration. The market is reacting particularly positive according to Giovani Piovano: “We introduced our collection to a number of European editors and the reactions are promising. The first large projects have already been delivered in Europe and in Asia. We are really looking forward to the reactions of visitors at MoOD. You will find us on the Trevira Square in hall 5.”

Champions of exports, towels and bathrobes

aving a major share in Turkish economy, the home textile industry ended 2014 with around 3.5 billion dollars of exports. According to data of TETSIAD, Turkey Home Textile Industrialists and Businessmen Association, towels and bathrobes are exported the most among other products, and Germany was the largest export market. The industry expects a 7 percent increase in home textile exports by the end of 2015. Improving its image and increasing it sales in world markets the players in Turkish home textile industry have been growing their successes. Having 38.96 percent share in total textile exports, the industry obtained 3.327 billion dollars of earnings from exports in 2014. While commenting on export data of the industry, TETSIAD disclosed that towels and bathrobes are the most important items with their 942 million dollar sales, followed by linens with 655 million dollars of exports, and fabrics for drapery and upholstery with 580 million dollars. Germany is the largest export market for Turkish home textile products with its export volume of 577 million dollars. Germany is followed by Russia with 307 million dollars and the USA with 269 million dollars. Austria, Estonia and Bulgaria ranks at last stages of the list of export markets.

Home textile industry gets benefit of hotel investments G

rowth in tourism industry provides business opportunities for more than 200 other industries. Largest category in hotel investments goes to home textile products. About 3.5 billion dollars of business volume is expected in 350 hotels project that were supported by incentives for home textile products including draperies, towels, bathrobes, bed linens and bed covers. While expressing his views on the subject, Yasar Kucukcalik, chairman of Turkish association of home textile industrialists and businessmen, TETIAD, said, “New hotel and renovation projects provide new businesses for our industry. An important business activity is expected in our industry in line with newly established hotels. We forecast about 3.5 billion dollars of business volume this year. Hotels heavily consume almost all category of products produced in home textile industry. Hotels are renovating these products at about four years intervals.�

fter last year’s record-breaking edition, where the visitor figure increased 10% to over 43,000, many of the industry’s leading brands have confirmed their participation at the 2015 iteration of Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles. Asia’s leading home textiles and accessories trade fair will take place at the brand-new National Exhibition and Convention Centre (Shanghai) from 26 – 28 August, with over 1,400 exhibitors from around 30 countries and regions scheduled to take part. The relocation to this fairground means a new experience for buyers as they browse the offerings of upholstery fabrics, bedding & towelling, carpets & rugs, wallcoverings, digital printing, sun protection systems, non-textile curtain accessories, design artwork and more. The fair will occupy seven halls in total, with all overseas exhibitors located in hall 7.2 (a change from the previously allocated hall 4.1), while domestic exhibitors are housed in the following halls: 5.1 for branded upholstery suppliers, West Hall for other upholstery fabrics, 7.1 for bedding & towelling, digital printing and other products, 7.2 for non-textile and sun protection system products, and 6.2 for accessories. Regional pavilions from Haining, Yuhang and Shaoxing / Tongxiang are located in halls 5.2, 6.1 and 6.2, respectively.

Furthermore, a new Whole-Home Style Zone will feature exhibitors with multiple home textile products which will be displayed in a ‘real-home setting’. This will help buyers to visualise upcoming trends and how different products can be matched to create new styles.

Eight country / region pavilions return again in 2015 Always a highlight with buyers are the country and region pavilions, with eight featuring at this edition from Belgium, India, Italy, Korea, Morocco, Pakistan, Taiwan and Turkey. Three of the largest pavilions include: Belgium Pavilion: organised by Fedustria, this pavilion returns for the fourth consecutive year, featuring a range of high-end premium products with unique designs.

Italy Pavilion: supported by the Italian Trade Commission (ICE), this zone will feature the best of Made-in-Italy with a strong focus on upholstery fabrics. Turkey Pavilion: organised by the Uludag Exporters’ Association (UTIB), this is the largest country pavilion again with around 30 suppliers, and showcases the country’s best bedding and curtain upholstery fabrics.

Haining Pavilion: the biggest regional pavilion with almost 240 exhibitors participating in 2015. Haining is known as a leading production hub for jacquard, embroidery, terry and high end decorative fabrics.

Intertextile Shanghai is also known for attracting many of the best domestic suppliers, as well as those from around the world. This year’s fair features regional Chinese pavilions from Binzhou, Gaoyang, Haining,

Eight country / region pavilions return again in 2015. Organised by Uludag Textile Exporters’ Association (UTIB), this is the largest country pavilion again with around 30 suppliers, and showcases the country’s best bedding and curtain upholstery fabrics.

Next month’s Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles will feature a new trend programme as the fair continues to expand beyond traditional home textile items to cover the entire product spectrum. The InterDesign programme has been developed in response to the increasing interest of Chinese consumers in design and trends, with some of the industry’s biggest players participating this year. As Asia’s leading event for the home textiles and accessories industry, Intertextile Shanghai will feature around 1,400 exhibitors from some 30 countries and regions, and takes place for the first time at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).

The InterDesign Programme includes three special areas in the International Hall (hall 7.2): a Trend Area, Trend Concept Show and Forum Space. The International Lifestyle Trend Area, which is designed by the NellyRodi™ Agency, will feature the 2016 lifestyle trend concepts, while the Trend Concept Show will bring these trends to life in a practical home setting. The show is coordinated this year by leading Chinese designer Mr Shen Lei, who is also a member of the 2015 Trend Committee which developed the 2016 trends. He has recruited some of China’s best interior designers – who have been paired with the industry’s leading brands – to create displays which help buyers visualise the latest trends. Each display elaborates on the themes and ideas found in the Trend Forum. The brands and designers include: • Brilliant & Refined (China) and Mr Ben Wu: Brilliant & Refined is the brand of exhibitor Shanghai Best Home and have worked with designer Mr Ben Wu this year, a long-time collaborator with Intertextile Shanghai and trend committee member in 2013.

• Dedar (Italy) and Mr Sun Yun: Italian brand Dedar specialise in innovative and well-designed upholstery, and collaborated with Mr Sun Yun to showcase these strengths. • Designers Guild (UK) and Mr Meng Ye: British brand Designers Guild return to the fair again and are partnered with Mr Meng Ye, an interior designer who has completed residential projects for a number of Chinese movie stars. • JAB Anstoetz (Germany) and Ms Tracy Jen: a repeat exhibitor at Intertextile Shanghai, JAB Anstoetz collaborate with Ms Tracy Jen this year. • Jean Paul Gaultier (France) and Mr Lu Hong Wei: wellknown for its unique style and design ideas, the Jean Paul Gaultier brand unites with Mr Lu Hong Wei at Intertextile Shanghai. • LaCanTouch (France) and Mr Chu Po Yang: LaCanTouch, which started out in wallcoverings and upholstery fabrics in 1989, is partnered with Mr Chu Po Yang with its Houlès, Luciano Marcato and other brands. • Prestigious Textiles (UK) and Mr Zhong Song: award-winning designer Mr Zhong Song collaborated with British brand Prestigious Textiles. • Uniwal (China) and Mr Dai Kun: another long-time collaborator with the fair, Mr Dai Kun, a well-known architect and interior designer and 2014 trend committee member, worked with Uniwal, one of China’s best-known wallcoverings brands.

Seminar programme to feature industry’s leading design & trend experts As is always the case at Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles, a comprehensive seminar programme with sessions conducted by the industry’s top experts is on offer. In the Design & Trends category, the highlights include a talk on day 2 by Mr Vincent Grégoire of the NellyRodi™ Agency who will explain in detail the 2016 trends found in the International Lifestyle Trend Area. On day 1, a forum talk will be led by Mr Shen Lei who will conduct an open discussion with the designers about their featured work in the Trend Concept Show. Also on day 1, a press conference will take place in the morning to explain the Trend Concept Show in detail. In addition to the seminars, tours of the International Lifestyle Trend Area will also be conducted by members of the Trend Committee. This year, they are led on days 1 and 2 of the fair by Mr Vincent Grégoire from the NellyRodi™ Agency (France), and Mr Dan Namura from Dan Project of Japan. Mr Namura has also cooperated with Heimtextil Frankfurt, the parent fair of Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles, for a number of years.

Additional customs duty to please home textiles sector T

he surcharge imposed on imports will have a positive affect on the Turkish home textile industry, too. With a new decision on import taxes an additional 50% duty has been imposed on imports of bedcovers, quilts and pillows. Yasar Kucukcalik, President of Turkish Home Textile Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TETSIAD), said that the cheap products coming from the Far East will not influence the production and this would generate a considerable amount of added value and employment. The additional duty imposed with the purpose of limiting imports will provide positive results for the home textile sector. Yasar Kucukcalik commented, “Imports will be reduced with this new initiation and the sector will increase production capacity and there will be millions of dollars of added value with this new tax imposed 50% on bedcovers, quilts and pillows.”

As of August 25, 2015, the products imported from all countries except EU members, EFTA members, Israel, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Morocco, Western Bank and Gaza Strip, Tunis, Egypt, Georgia, Albania, Jordan, Chili, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, South Korea and Mauritius, are imposed 50% surcharge to support domestic industry.

urkey, as being one of the most prominent textile and clothing producers in the world, has the production capacity to meet almost all the raw material needs of the industry. Some part of cotton and artificial and synthetic fibers needed by the industry are met by imports. The textile and clothing industry was the first industrial sector that developed in Turkey. The establishment of customs union with the European Union gave a major boost to the industry in 1990s and it currently is the largest manufacturing subsector in Turkey in terms of production and employment.

The Turkish fabrics industry produces a wide variety of fabrics for apparel, home textiles, upholstery and technical applications. The country has large-scale fabrics companies with vertically integrated production facilities in addition to many small-sized non-integrated firms, serviced by a well-developed finishing industry. A large part of the industry is based on cotton. Turkey is the sixth-largest cotton producer in the world. Domestic output does not fully meet local demand and the country is the third-largest cotton importer after China and Bangladesh.

The fabric mills are mainly concentrated in Istanbul, Bursa, Adana, Denizli, Kahramanmaras, Izmir, Gaziantep, Tekirdag, Kayseri and Usak. Many of the integrated mills are located in Istanbul, Bursa, Kahramanmaras, Adana and Gaziantep. Contributing over 10% of the GNP, about 20% of the overall exports and generating about 15% of the total employment, the textile and apparel industry is the key industry and a major player for Turkey’s economy. According to UN Comtrade, in 2013 Turkey has become the 5th largest textile and apparel exporter globally, following China, India, Italy and Germany respectively. Turkey also enjoys being the 3rd largest hosiery and 3rd largest towel supplier of the world, as well as the largest home textile manufacturer of Europe. Gaziantep, one of the major textile regions of Turkey, produces about 57% of all machine-made carpets produced worldwide. Turkey has also been the eight largest cotton producer of the world in 2013/2014 crop year with 501000 metric/tons of cotton and forecasted to escalate to the seventh with an estimated 700000 metric/tons by the 2014/2015 crop year. With an installed capacity of around 3,5 million/tons, Turkey reaps the benefit of having the highest fiber and yarn production capacity in Europe. About 65% of this capacity accounts for cotton, 35% accounts for

synthetic filament and 10% accounts for wool and others. Thanks to its remarkable capacity also in synthetic yarns and fibers, Turkey has become the seventh largest producer globally with an estimated annual production of 1,3 million tons in 2014. The point that the Turkish textile sector has reached today regarding quality, fashion and design cannot be underestimated.

Regional development of the Turkish textile industry Employing about an estimated 2 million people, about 1 million registered according to SSI of Turkey, and about another 1 million unregistered, with nearly 58,000 active companies, the textile and apparel industry in Turkey is concentrated around the cities of Istanbul, Bursa, Denizli, Gaziantep, İzmir, Usak, Tekirdag, Kahramanmaras, Adana and Kayseri, respectively. When the clustering activities of the Turkish textile industry is analyzed, it can be evaluated that floss, synthetic filament yarn and fabric production is clustered around Bursa, which histor-

ically was the silk center of the Ottoman Empire; towel, bathrobe and home textile production around Denizli; woolen, worsted and semi-worsted yarn and blanket production around Usak; finishing and particularly circular knitted product finishing around Tekirdag; cotton weaving and finishing in Adana; cotton yarn and particularly OE-yarn in Kahramanmaras; polypropylene, nonwoven and machine-made carpet manufacturing in Gaziantep and finally circular knitting, knitwear and hosiery as well as apparel and garment manufacturing around Istanbul.

A consistent improvement in the exports of all textile related articles The continuous increase in the textile and apparel exports of Turkey over the years did not only contribute to the growth in industrial export earnings, but also contributed to the reduction of the current account deficit of Turkey. Thanks to the textile and apparel industry together, Turkey achieved export revenues worth about 29 billion USD, whereas realized imports worth about 13 billion USD and managed to reduce the account deficit by 16 billion USD within 2014. Thanks to the additional tax declaration for the imports of several textile articles that has taken effect by April 2011, the textile and fiber exports has accelerated over the last 4 years, and hit the top by the end of 2014 and the foreign trade bal-

ance has surpassed 42 billion USD. Whereas woven fabrics receive the largest share in Turkish textile exports, knitted fabrics, yarn and home textile exports also got a significant cut. Russian Federation, Italy, Germany, Romania and Spain ranked as top markets respectively when woven fabrics are considered. For the knitted fabrics, Italy, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania led the textile export markets of Turkey. Finally, Italy, UK, Belgium, Germany and Netherlands ranked among the top importers of fiber and yarn from Turkey. On the other hand, Turkey ranked as number one importer of synthetic fibers and yarns in 2012, with about a 7,7% share in total world imports ahead China. Fiber and yarn imports account for one-third of Turkey’s total textile imports. Whereas Turkmenistan, Egypt and Uzbekistan get the biggest share of Turkey’s cotton fiber and yarn imports, China, India and Vietnam lead the list regarding synthetic fiber and yarn imports.

Textile industry received even more support from the government in 2014 The government granted about 8 billion USD worth investment incentive to the textile sector within the period of April 2011 and July 2014. Only 1,5 billion USD investment incentives was provided within the period of January 2014 and July 2014. Here, we should point out that the man-made fiber industry continued to suffer with regard to incentives due to the legislations of the Customs Union and EU. The support instruments provided to the overall textile industry within 4 different investment incentive schemes included VAT exemption, customs duty exemption, tax reduction, social security premium support (both employer’s and employee’s share), income tax withholding allowance, interest rate support, land allocation and VAT refund. However, the foreign direct investment (FDI) flows

within the textile industry appeared to be at very low levels. Last but not least, Turkish government strongly outlined its support dedicated to the textile industry in the tenth fiveyear development plan covering 2014-2018 period, which was approved in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on July 2013, and within the plan the supporting of the transformation of textiles, clothing and leather sectors into a structure; where firms are customer-oriented, innovative, environment-friendly, effective in marketing and production channels, able to enrich their productive features by speed and flexibility and able to create their own design, collection and brands, were highly emphasized.

Turkish textile industry offers significant benefits to the European markets Today, the Turkish textile industry is pointing the way and opening up new perspectives for the world, particularly the European textile industry. There are a large number of competitive advantages making Turkey such an important textile location for Europe. Geographical proximity of Turkey to the European markets is of utmost importance. That not only contributes to shorter delivery times of two to three weeks compared to two to three months in China, but it also helps the Turkish textile manufacturers to respond quickly to the challenging demands of the European customers. The state-of-art textile infrastructure in Turkey helps meeting diversified product ranges with high-value added products. The well-trained and highly skilled workforce of the Turkish textile industry equipped with an immense know-how and a global mindset also attracts the European customers. The manufacturers ensure a full compliance with internationally accepted ecologic standards. Last but not the least Turkey has become a full member of the Customs Union in 1996, after a 22-years of transition period. Thanks to all these unique features of the Turkish textile market, today it has become a major sourcing country for many global European brands such as Esprit, H&M, S. Oliver, Adidas, Zara and Hugo Boss, whose subsidiary in Turkey has become one of the largest companies of Turkey in 2013.

A short glance to the development of synthetic fiber and yarn industry in Turkey Despite the fact that first cellulosic fiber (viscose) production had begun in state-owned Gemlik Sungipek factory in 1938, the manufacturing of synthetic fibers started after the 1960s. Sifas, located in Bursa, achieved the first-ever synthetic yarn production in Turkey in 1964 under Turlon, which has become the first registered Nylon-6 yarn brand of the country. SASA, Turkey’s first petrochemical company integrated polyester fiber production in Adana in 1966. SASA, today still maintains its leading position in the synthetic fiber industry with a 44% market share in Turkey. AKSA’s establishment in 1968, to meet the demand for acrylic

fabric in Yalova has become another milestone in manmade fibers manufacturing history of Turkey. Whereas the share of polyamide fibers was higher in the beginning, later the share of acrylic and polyester surpassed the polyamides. Today, Bursa meets more than 70% of the synthetic fiber production in Turkey only by itself. SUSEB, Union of Artificial and Synthetic Fibers, an NGO established to preserve the rights of man-made fiber manufacturers is also settled in Bursa. Most of the yarns further processed within Turkey, which include finishing, dyeing, heat-setting, etc. thanks to its’ outstanding position in textile finishing. Turkish synthetic fiber industry hit by MFA and China’s WTO membership MFA (The Multifibre Agreement) signed in 1974 became the first major blow struck the Turkish synthetic fiber industry. Following the abolition of MFA in 2005, also the global textile quotas were eliminated. Turkey took the advantage of this somehow on one side, but however this also contributed China, who was granted a membership of WTO in 2001, to dominate the world markets. In this regard, Turkey has currently imposed several anti-dumping taxes on the imports of textured yarn of nylon or other polyamides (measuring per single yarn more than 50 tex) from China, polyester textured yarn from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and yarn of certain staple fibers from Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam. The anti-dumping taxes currently in force still don’t appear to be sufficient for the Turkish yarn market on one hand according to the synthetic yarn manufacturers and however, on the other hand, China’s WTO membership, which is Turkey’s main competitor both in natural and man-made fibers, becomes a major issue when it comes imposing new duties and also keep implementing the existing ones.

Critical EUR/USD rates threatens the synthetic fiber manufacturer Insufficient domestic capacity in producing the raw materials is another major hurdle of the Turkish synthetic fiber industry. When we consider the cost structure of the synthetic fibers, we clearly see that about %60-70 of the costs result from the raw materials. Herein, manufacturers those achieved diversifying their products could somehow considered a step ahead. Producing most of her specialty products based on DMT and starts with Px, SASA, could be given as a perfect sample in this regard. Having a DMT capacity of 280.000 ton/year and a polymer capacity of 350,000 ton/year including PTA-based production, SASA stands out as the largest polyester fiber and yarn manufacturer of Turkey with 150.878 tons of polyester fiber and 4.077 tons of polyester yarn production in 2014. However, Today’s most common synthetic fiber, polyester is mainly composed of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and mono-ethylene glycol (MEG), which are domestically produced by PETKIM. However, PETKIM has an annual production capacity of 89,000 tons of PTA and 70,000 tons of MEG respectively. In view of the fact that PTA is not only a raw material for polyester fibers, but also used as a raw material for PET bottles, polyester resins and films for the packaging industry, PETKIM falls short in meeting the requirement of the polyester fiber manufacturers. Just to give another example, whereas a part of acrylonitrile, the basic raw material of the acrylic fibers, which today used as an outstanding replacement for wool, is today manufactured by also PETKIM, all the required vinyl acetate is imported.

This obliges the synthetic fiber industry to import a significant amount of chemicals particularly from China. Within this perspective, recently EUR/USD rate has became one of the major challenges that the sector is struggling to cope with. The manufacturers, who principally import their raw materials in USD, realize their exports particularly to the EU zone in EURO. Falling of EUR/USD rate to the lowest rate of the last 10 years within the first week of March significantly increasing the input costs and decreasing the export revenues of the manufacturers accordingly.

Risks of over and unstable growth particularly in PP BCF yarn manufacturing Sales models with long payment targets appear to be major risks for most of the small and medium sized enterprises in the textile industry of Turkey, who particularly invest through bank credits. This also brings the risk of over and unstable growth at the same time. There are a remarkable number of companies in Turkey those keep carrying on the business through accommodation bills, which could likely become a significant risk when the shoe is on the other foot. Whereas, sales models with long payment targets bring additional benefits to the companies having a huge capital stock, it brings the risk of bankruptcy to the companies depending on bank credits to keep their business.

Sudden decrease in oil prices Having lost a significant advantage to a certain extent with the currency rates, Turkish synthetic yarn manufacturers somewhat enjoyed the decrease in the oil prizes on the other hand. The brent crude oil per barrel that was traded at the levels of about 110 USD in May 2014 was being traded at about 60,5 USD levels by February. However, the sudden decreases of the raw materials in the sector and the nervousness due to the prospects for even more decreases resulted with an unexpected recession in the last quarter of 2014.

First and foremost, Russian Federation, which used to rank as Turkey’s number one export market, fell to the second place with about 25% decrease in 2014, mainly due to the business confidence and investment initiatives has fallen to the lowest level and accordingly the domestic consumption and industrial production decreased based on it’s crisis with Ukraine. All together has also resulted with a significant loss in the value of ruble against major currencies. Iraq has become another critical export market, where alarm bells start to ring, because of the increasing domestic conflicts in the recent period, and ISIS has seized the total control of the north part of the country. The ongoing civil wars in Syria, the political crisis regarding the sharing of oil revenues, bankruptcy of Greece are some of the major concerns in the upcoming period regarding not only textile industry, but also the whole manufacturing industry. Meanwhile, China, which has a substantial impact on the cotton priz-

es, stopped cotton imports in order to decrease the existing stocks, and this accordingly resulted with a decline in the cotton prizes. This somehow affected all the textile industry not only Turkey, but worldwide.

Turkey still maintains its competitiveness compared to the major textile markets However, Turkish textile industry still maintains its competitiveness in many aspects today, when today’s textile markets are considered. Turkey scores almost excellent points for the EU regarding commercial aspects such as flexibility, geographical proximity, lan-

guage and culture, design and fashion compared to the major textile locations such as China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Regarding industrial factors such as raw material supply and modernization of the machinery Turkey is almost even with China, and a lot more competitive than the rest. When general key factors are considered whereas China only surpasses Turkey in accessing to capital, Turkey excels in energy and transaction costs, transport, lead-time and infrastructure. The labor costs is the major handicap in this sense. According to the latest labor cost comparison in the textile industry initiated by Werner

Turkey, with a labor cost of around 4,50 USD/h, almost more than doubled China having a labor cost of around 2,10 USD/h in 2011. However, this margin has been closing down in the recent years, as the labor costs in China is continuously and tremendously increasing. Overall, Turkey has not only a locational advantage for the EU, but it also distinguishes itself from other competitors with a number of remarkable features.

Turkish textile and apparel industry, full steam ahead towards 2023 targets Textile and apparel industry significantly acts as one of the key industries to support achieving the target to increase Turkey’s total exports to 500 billion USD by 2023, in the 100th year of the foundation of the Turkish Republic. For this impressive milestone, textile and apparel industries set their

targets at 20 billion USD and 50 billion USD, respectively. Despite all the drawbacks and negative effects, Turkish textile and apparel industries proceed through this amazing target step by step. Thanks to the ongoing government stability since 2002, Turkey succeeded to overcome most of the barriers. Turkey will experience an important election period in June 2015 that will determine the new government for the next 4 years. Provided that the ongoing stability continues, what’s more the new government could achieve preparing the long waited new constitution, market diversification could be achieved, the continuously observed development in the technical textiles field would continue, the roadmaps of this target could successfully be implemented, these targets are definitely open and would be reached even before 2023.

VTEKS, the world’s second Turkey’s biggest home textile exhibition, which was organized by cooperation of TETSİAD and CNR, welcomed its guests this year for the 21st time. More than 1000 companies and more than 2 thousand brands participated in the exhibition, which was opened by Nihat Zeybekçi, the Minister of Economy and which was held at CNR EXPO Yeşilköy, between dates of 19-23 August. Famous designers exhibited the trends of house textile of 2016. “EVTEKS İstanbul International Home Textile Exhibition”, which is one the biggest home textile exhibitions of the world as for the area where it was organized, made the giants of the industry in Istanbul between dates of 19-23 August 2015. This year, 138 thousand and 368 people visited EVTEKS Fair that is outstanding among the exhibitions in Turkey, with its international participant diversity and the number of

We can say that our exhibition created a business volume of 2 billion dollars.�

Trends of 2016 were set In the exhibition where more than 2 thousand brands took parts; famous designers exhibited the home textile trends of 2016. Heart of economic relations between Turkey and China beat at China Homelife Show

hina, becoming the production center of the whole world for the past 20 years with it affordable costs and availability of products and raw materials in every level of quality is making a debut in Turkey with China Homelife Fair. China Homelife Turkey Fair, held for the second time this year and visited by 12.076 people, was held in CNR EXPO YeĹ&#x;ilkĂśy Istanbul between 3-6 June with the participation of 700 Chinese firms. In China Homelife fair, which is essential in terms of the economic relations between China and Turkey, nearly 350 bilateral discussions were made between Chinese and Turkish businessmen and they started important cooperation.

urich – Since the start of the year, Georg Dieners has been the General Secretary of the International OEKO-TEX® Association based in Zurich (Switzerland). The association of 16 independent textile research and test institutes has been performing harmful substance testing according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 since 1992. Other services offered by OEKO-TEX® include STeP (Sustainable Textile Production), a certification system for sustainable textile production, and the “Made in Green” product label. The Association has also launched the MySTeP database so companies can map their individual supply chains and receive support in establishing more sustainable sourcing. We talked to Georg Dieners about his first months in office and the challenges faced by the textile industry.

In the past, OEKO-TEX® was synonymous with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and its “Confidence in Textiles” label, for companies in the textile industry as well as retailers and consumers. What steps has OEKOTEX® taken to continue the development of its existing services and supplement them with new products?

As a graduate of the Fachhochschule Niederrhein with a focus on textile technology/textile finishing, as well as having many years of experience in various management positions and companies within the textile sector, Georg Dieners has been Secretary General of the International OEKO-TEX® Association since the start of 2015. He has the broad range of knowledge required for his new role as the OEKO-TEX® Secretary General. ©OEKO-TEX®

Over its history, OEKO-TEX® has continuously added certification systems to its product portfolio. For instance, we have been auditing production facilities with regard to environmental compatibility and social standards since 1995. In that respect, our international institutes have decades of experience in the area of sustainability. We have been able to utilize that experience, combined with feedback from the market, for enhancements and additions to our overall system now consisting of the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, STeP, Made in Green, and MySTeP. We are able to offer our customers a comprehensive and practical solution to the ever-increasing requirements of the textile industry.

To what extent do the OEKO-TEX® certifications cover the objectives of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles? We share the central objectives of the Partnership and support the Partnership members in their efforts to achieve continuous improvements to existing processes and working conditions in textile production around the world. With its comprehensive system, OEKO-TEX® covers the full textile production chain and is therefore an important partner in achieving these goals.

Who, specifically, do your various services appeal to? What are the specific challenges faced by manufacturers, brands, and retailers? Politicians, the media, and NGOs are pushing for changes in textile production to make the process more socially responsible and environmentally friendly. Consumers themselves are much more conscious of what they are buying. At the same time, supply relationships are very complex and can span across the whole world. They have to become more transparent to increase the level of confidence throughout the industry.

What are the possible solutions and where do you see the role of OEKO-TEX® within this context? Our aim is always to ensure safety and, as a result, confidence. The basis for that may be an exclusion list for harmful substances which some companies have established themselves, like a Restricted Substances List (RSL). Likewise, normative provisions at an international level or industry-based commitments can help to achieve this aim. However, in each case it is vital that there is a neutral testing and certification process. That is what the OEKO-TEX® solutions provide. They reduce complexity for the textile industry and offer consumers, the media, and NGOs the necessary level of traceability and transparency.

For manufacturers, quality assurance is paramount, which means harmful substance testing according to the OEKOTEX® Standard 100 and production facility audits according to STeP. The closer companies are to the end consumer, the more marketing becomes important in addition to quality assurance. The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 label helps brands and retailers in particular to prove that their products are harmless to human ecology. The label offers consumers an important aid in their decision-making. If a company also wants to prove that a product has been tested for harmful substances and likewise has been produced sustainably, it can do so with the Made in Green label.

In your opinion, what are the most important benefits to companies who work with OEKO-TEX®? OEKO-TEX® has been established at an international level for some time and is extremely prevalent throughout the textile chain. Added to that is the high level of awareness and reputation of our brand, especially with consumers. The individual modules in our testing and certification systems compliment and build upon each other. They are tailored to a whole variety of different needs, from those of manu-

How do you rate national initiatives like the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles in Germany? To make the textile and clothing industry more sustainable, politicians, NGOs, and the companies in the industry all have to pull in the same direction. Since the action plan was modified in April, significant associations and a large number of notable companies from the textile industry have joined the partnership. That is an important step and we welcome it. To continue our support for this multi-stakeholder approach in the future, the international OEKO-TEX® Association is a member of the Textiles Partnership through the OEKO-TEX® Foundation.

Will there also be changes to harmful substance testing based on the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100?

“Made in Green by OEKO-TEX®” is an independent textile label for highlighting consumer products and textiles at all levels of the textile value creation chain that are made from materials tested for harmful substances and that have been manufactured under safe and socially responsible

facturers of raw materials, spinning mills, weaving mills, and finishing facilities to manufacturers of ready-madeclothes, retailers, and brands. Each company can decide which services they want to use. The costs and expenses are then distributed along the production chain, because at each value creation stage, only the value added to the product at that stage is tested in the laboratory.

The expansion of the product range also represents an ongoing challenge. What considerations have been given to this and what are the implications you have taken from them? The most important issue is that the products are clearly positioned and delineated. In our case, the concept behind our range was that the products could build on and interconnect with each other. That allows us to create synergies both for our customers and us. The core of our overall system is and will remain the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.

The testing and certification system has proven itself over two decades, and even today the concept behind it is still perfectly suited to the market. Except for the established yearly revision of the test criteria, there won’t be any changes in terms of content. We are, however, critically reviewing the design and language within the actual label at the moment. This is a sensitive area to review because the label is prominent worldwide and enjoys a high level of recognition. We are aware of this and are treating it with due consideration.

What conclusions have you come to after six months in office? We are on the right path. The market feedback is positive and the number of certifications is increasing steadily. Our systems are meeting today’s requirements. Sustainability at all levels is a massive trend of the 21st century, and our new services help our customers achieve more sustainable levels than ever before. That helps us, and our customers, become better equipped for the challenges of the future.

How do you intend to pass the positive values of the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 on to the extended product portfolio? Our whole system is based on the same values: confidence, independence, and passion for textile products. We take this approach at every stage from product development to communications. The aim here is to pass along our positive image from the harmful substance testing to

With exhibitors coming in from Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia the event set an eclectic ambience. The participation of acclaimed fashion houses like Carlo Pozzi (Italy) and Bella Donna (U.A.E) stand testimony to the revered stature of the ITF. The diplomatic presence at the fair was palpable, as H.E Bhutti Saeed Al Ghandi (Vice Chairman, DWTC) inaugurated the event. His Excellency visited a number of exhibitor stalls and expressed appreciation for the organizers and the scale of the event. The April edition saw over 100 exhibitors, highlighting the nascent yet promising mindset of the ITF. Clarence Greens, a first-time exhibitor at the ITF, marveled, “This was our first year at a trade show. It is a wonderful platform and we need to be having it more often. The crowd has been beautiful; we had a good crowd mix. Having visitors from around the world at our stall was great.” Rather than remain complacent after enjoying immense success, the ITF is still unwavering in its determination to expand with each event; and becoming a major influence in the U.A.E fashion scene.
