Spring is here and the snow is slowly disappearing. It's at this time of year that I start dreaming of summer days spend out on the lake at the cottage! Our cottage holds a special place in my heart. It is a space that is constantly in transition. Each year we add something new. Over the years, this has included a pool, a backyard makeover, new trees and even a pontoon boat! We have created so many memories out on the water, from fishing and sunset cruises, to jumping right in the lake on a blistering hot summer day.

This year, like every year, we will look for ways to get even more out of our home away from home. Mandy and the girls have been begging me to build them some raised garden beds so they can spend the Summer and Fall doting on their plants and watching them grow. Of course, I will happily add a vegetable garden at the cottage for them. Gardening is such a great experience for kids! Learning to grow our own food and nurturing what nature provides is a big life lesson, not to mention the mental and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors! Plus, this will give me a fun excuse to bust out my power tools!

Each Spring, we get to share with you, the best of the best when it comes to cottages, vacation homes and outdoor living! DESIGNER’S FAVORITE FEATURE

My favorite feature is the built-in corner bench. I like how effective it is in creating seating without taking up any space on the patio. It is centered on the retaining wall so part of the seat and backrest are slightly cantilevered into the garden bed behind it. - David Andersen

THE GOAL

The main goal for this backyard space was to create a variety of different zones to accommodate various activities. This included a lounging area, a dining area and a play area for their children.

The previous paving against the house was causing drainage problems. We solved this issue by installing a gravel layer underneath the deck and the patio We used a permeable bedding mortar and grout system (Romex) for the patio which allows water to flow right though into the gravel layer. This helps to control stormwater at the source (i.e. on the property) rather than having runoff into city sewer systems. We also installed gravel behind the retaining walls and under the concrete footings so the drainage essentially all connects to the main gravel layer below the deck and patio.

A favorite feature of this space is the seamless transition from inside to outside. The double French doors, when both open, blur the interior with the exterior, creating a sense of not knowing whether you are inside or out. The vaulted ceiling creates a sense of spaciousness, accentuated by the large light fixtures that draws one's eye into the high space.

The Concept

The Capilano outdoor room was designed to take full advantage of Vancouver's mild climate that allows residents to eat and socialize outdoors for up to 8 months of the year! The homeowners are active individuals who love the outdoors and enjoy socializing so they wanted a space that could be enjoyed at a moment's notice. After all, you just have to be ready when the opportunity presents itself!

Problem Solved

One of the biggest challenges when designing a season space is that you need to consider not just their intended use, but how they will react when not in use. This includes considering how the outdoor space will affect your indoor space. With a large structure like this, one concern is that it will block natural light from the interior of the home, especially on gray and wet days when the space is not being used.

To counteract this issue, four large skylights were installed to maximize the natural light inside the house. The structure was also designed to be fully open on three sides, allowing for both natural light and fantastic views from inside the home.

My Favorite Feature

I love the way the subtle light gray tones in the decorative tile tie with the starkness of the blue cabinetry. The backsplash tile came in a variety of patterns and we had them laid out as a stacked formation to put them on display.

The Concept

For this vacation property, we wanted to create an out doorsy cottage feel with a Mediterranean twist. The cohesive finishes fit the tone of the space well as they embody the refreshing, light, and calm color palette that the clients loved.

The Scope

This home was originally built in the 90s and the clients wanted an updated kitchen that maximized the use of the space.

To give the kitchen a new look, we replaced the original wooden shaker doors with a painted slab door with brushed nickel hardware. We finished it off with a white quartz countertop and decorative tile backdrop.

We kept most of the layout the same as it worked well for the home. The one change we made was to remove a pony wall to allow for a more open concept space that would be easier to use when entertaining guests at the cottage.

In addition to an updated look and improved flow, we also wanted to increase functionality within the space. We installed pull out drawers in the deep cabinets to minimize the reach the clients would have to make to retrieve pots and pans as well as utilized a swivel plate to optimize the lower corner cabinetry space

Myth: Solar systems are unaffected by power outages.

Reality: The most common type of solar system is a Grid-Tied system which relies on a working power grid in order to operate. With a grid-tied system, a power outage in your area will cause your solar system to stop producing power as well. One way to avoid this issue is to invest in a Hybrid system that includes a battery. The battery can store power which can then be used to operate your solar system during power outages. The battery can also help ensure you have sufficient power on hand during peak usage times and in some cases, can even be used as a charging station for your electric vehicle as well. Myth: Solar can lower my heating costs but I will still need to cover other electrical costs.

Reality: A solar system can be used to produce enough power to cover your entire household power needs including lights, water heaters, air conditioners and more. The system is designed with your household needs in mind, and provided enough usable space is available, the system can lower your power outage to zero or even negative power usage. When opening your cottage or vacation home for the season, add smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm maintenance and upgrades to your to-do list. Alarms are an easy addition and can help provide early warning in the event of a home fire or CO emergency.

According to the Canadian National Fire Information Database, 80 per cent of fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, often due to missing batteries or expired alarms. Additionally, many homes lack proper CO protection. Known as the “silent killer,” CO is an invisible, odorless gas that cannot be detected without an alarm and can cause injury or even death.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are more than 300 CO-related deaths and more than 200 hospitalizations per year in Canada.

Fortunately, there are several easy ways to help keep your family and home safe, including installing the latest in fire and CO alarm technology.

Every level, every bedroom. Even if you have smoke and CO alarms in your home, you and your family may not be sufficiently protected if you don’t have enough devices. To ensure the highest level of protection, follow the NFPA’s recommendation to install smoke and CO alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Be safe, replace. Smoke and CO alarms are on duty 24/7 and need to be replaced at least every 10 years. If you can’t remember when you installed your alarms, chances are, it’s time to replace them. Installing new ones helps to ensure you are protected with the most advanced sensing technologies and the latest safety features available. Test and maintain alarms. Let’s start with the three L’s of real estate: Location, location, location! It may be obvious but you can't change the location of the home you just bought so choose that location wisely! Look not only to move to a city that suits your needs but work with a professional that knows the neighborhoods right down to the streets and pathways. Know where the busy roads and intersections are, where you may get the most road noise, where the quickest access to the things that matter to you are, like parks, transit, shopping and schools. These things really matter for your long term happiness but also to future buyers!

The average Canadian moves about 5-6 times throughout their adult lives so resale always has to be kept in mind to capitalize on those future profits and set you up for success down the road.

Next is size or space. A great tip is to always buy the largest lot size you can comfortably afford and maintain for a detached home and for condos or townhomes, always buy the largest square footage you can afford. The reason for this is after you purchase, you can’t change your lot to make it bigger! If you purchase a detached home, you can literally change every aspect of it! You can make it bigger, change walls, add floors, etc. but you cannot make that lot bigger. With

condos and townhomes, you can never have too much space, but you can definitely have too little, and this is something that cannot be changed after you have purchased. Having more square footage gives you the freedom to do as you please, add a roommate to help with bills; have a partner move in or grow your family without the immediate need to move. Plus, thinking about resale, these key size and space features will be more appealing to future buyers for the same reasons, making you more money down the road.

Lastly, how was it cared for or constructed? Of course, after you purchase you can only care and maintain the home moving forward but have no control of how it was maintained or constructed. It may be difficult for you to determine these things but an experienced and skilled professional will have an eye for this. If you're buying a resale property, a home that may be a little dated but absolutely loved and maintained with care is a much better buy than a home that was neglected. It’s much better to purchase a home with the key structural components that protect you and your family from the elements like the roof, windows, doors and mechanical systems updated, maintained or replaced than a home with a flashy new kitchen and bathroom with a leaky roof and a moldy attic or basement. You can always update a dated kitchen or bathroom if you buy a structurally sound home that will keep you warm and dry.

If you had to live in another country, what country would you choose?

Definitely England. It’s the heart of inspiration for me. Whenever I come back from a trip there, I’m excited to get back to sketching some new Amuletta designs.

1/2 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp Four Fathers Cayenne hot sauce

1/2 tsp sugar

1/2 16oz. bag coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots)

2 green onions, sliced

TACOS

8 small corn tortillas

2 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp ground cumin

1/4 tsp garlic powder

1/8 tsp salt

1 Tbsp cooking oil

1 lb. cod filets

1 avocado, sliced

1 jalapeño, sliced

DIRECTIONS

Toast the tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat until browned on each side. Stack the tortillas and cover with foil to keep warm.

Make the cumin lime coleslaw next. For the dressing, stir together the mayonnaise, 1 Tbsp lime juice, cumin, FF Cayenne Hot Sauce, salt, and sugar.

Place the coleslaw mix and sliced green onions in a bowl, pour the coleslaw dressing over top and stir to combine. Refrigerate until you're ready to build your tacos.

Next, season the fish filets. Combine the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and salt. Cut each fish filet into smaller taco-sized pieces. Season both sides of the fish with the spice mix.

Add half of the cooking oil to a large skillet and heat over medium. Once hot, add half of the fish and cook for a few minutes on each side or until the fish is cooked through (it will feel firm, look opaque, and be easily flaked). Repeat with more oil and the second batch of fish.

Top each toasted tortilla with a piece of fish, a slice of avocado, a small scoop of the cumin lime slaw, and a couple slices of jalapeño.

EGGPLANT MEATBALLS WITH SPICY CAYENNE MARINARA SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

1 small eggplant (about 12 ounces)

1 large egg, lightly beaten

1/2 cup cooked white beans, such as cannellini or navy (rinse, if canned), smash with a fork

1 large clove garlic, very finely chopped or pressed through a garlic press

1/2 cup finely chopped fresh basil leaves or flat-leaf parsley

1/2 cup finely grated parmesan

cheese

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

1 cup whole-wheat panko-style breadcrumbs

Olive oil mister or non-stick pan spray

2 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)

1/4 cup Four Fathers Cayenne Hot Sauce (add to marinara sauce)

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and place the eggplant on top. Use a fork to prick the eggplant 4 times, then place the eggplant in the oven and roast until it has completely collapsed and a paring knife easily slips into the center, approximately 40 to 50 minutes. Cool the eggplant for 20 minutes. Leave the oven on.

Slice the eggplant in half lengthwise

and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh (discard the skin). Place the roasted eggplant in a medium bowl and stir in the egg and beans. Add the garlic, basil, parmesan, 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and stir to combine, then mix in the breadcrumbs.

Again, line the rimmed baking sheet with a clean sheet of foil and lightly mist it with oil spray. Shape the eggplant mixture into balls about the size of a golf ball (2 tablespoons per

ball). Place them on the prepared baking sheet and lightly mist the top of the balls with oil spray. Bake the eggplant meatballs until they are golden brown and firm, approximately 20 minutes.

While the meatballs cook, warm the marinara sauce in a small saucepan adding Four Fathers Cayenne Hot Sauce. Remove the meatballs from the oven, sprinkle with a little extra parmesan and serve with the marinara sauce.

Creamy Lickity Lemon Pepper Shrimp

INGREDIENTS

2 Tbsp salted butter

4 cloves garlic minced

1 pound shrimp, tails on or off

1 1/2 Tbsp Rave BBQ Rubs Lickity Lemon Pepper

1/2 Lemon (juiced)

1/2 cup dry white wine

1 1/2 cups 35% cream

DIRECTIONS

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add in minced garlic. Season shrimp with Rave BBQ Rubs Lickity Lemon Pepper and fry for 1 minute on each side. Fry until just cooked through and pink Deglaze the pan with 1/2 of a freshly squeezed lemon. Pour in the white wine and allow to reduce to half while scraping any bits off of the bottom of the pan.

Reduce heat to medium, add the cream and bring to a gentle simmer, while stirring occasionally. Reduce until cream starts to thicken.

Serve as an appetizer, over pasta, rice or steamed vegetables.

Transitioning Into Middle School

Entering middle school can be a challenge for many students. Follow these tips to help your child succeed!

Sit down with your child to set expectations and prep them for what’s coming: “School is going to get more challenging this year. Let’s talk about what to expect and how you’re going to handle it.”

Tour the campus before school begins to help make the transition less overwhelming.

Make a map of the school with your child and mark your child’s schedule on the map.

Take a “show and tell” approach to getting your child organized, meaning you first show your kids how to do a task. Then, you gradually take the training wheels off and have them do tasks themselves. For example, lay everything out on the table that needs to go in your child’s backpack; notebooks, lunch, field trip money, water, etc. Have your child put everything in their backpack. Do this for several weeks. Then, have your child take on these tasks independently. (Yes, this approach takes longer, but the long-term results are worth it!)

Use the same approach to ensure homework assignments are done if your child is struggling with this responsibility. Check that assignments are done every few nights. Then, after a few months, give your child more independence and stop checking on homework completion.
