Life at the lake...Sunsets over the water, the smell of BBQ on the air, a cold drink in your hand and your feet up, just taking it all in. Those of you who regularly read Canadian Home Trends Magazine and watch my wife, Mandy and I on the Marc and Mandy Show are already aware that we have spent the last few years doing a complete overhaul of our cottage property. We are excited to have finally finished renovations and have spent many weekends this past summer enjoying our time at the cottage, or "tottage" as our 2 year old calls it! We love having a place to retreat to as a family to unwind, recharge, relax and have the occasional kitchen dance party with our little girls! From planning and designing to decorating, building or renovating a cottage can be a major undertaking. Inspired by our own adventures in cottage renovations, we decided to dedicate our 2020 Special Edition entirely to cottage, cabin and vacation properties. We have teamed up with top Canadian designers to bring you gorgeous cottage and vacation homes (See Designer Spaces on page 63) that will help inspire your own cottage dreams! Of course, a key aspect of cottage life is spending time outdoors and we haven't forgotten your outdoor living spaces. (See Outdoor Living Design Boards on page 26) From must-see shopping destinations to product profiles and editor's favorites, we have brought together ideas and inspiration to suit every style. (See What's Your Style on page 21) Whether lake life for you comes in the form of a tent, camper or cottage, we look forward to the memories that will be made as the weather warms up and the days get longer. So sit back, relax and let this special edition of Canadian Home Trends Magazine give you inspiration for your upcoming days at the lake!

Growing up in Northern Ontario, trips to Cottage Country in Muskoka were eagerly anticipated summer moments. This luxurious cottage look was inspired by that feeling you get when you pull up to your vacation home, knowing you have a little time in paradise to relax and enjoy the cottage life. White wicker on the patio, loungers on docks, hammocks between trees, Adirondack chairs around the fire and large umbrellas on the beach are all pieces that bring back fond memories of my childhood. This luxury cottage design board is my modern twist on those childhood memories, combining cottage classics with modern styling for a look that is both clean and cozy!

With our short Canadian summers we want to maximize our time outside, both at home and at the cottage. By creating a cozy, stylish seating area, we can extend our living space outdoors and spend more time enjoying the summer sun. The exotic, tropical, African-inspired look is hot right now and it translates beautifully in an outdoor setting. It is a perfect balance of the monotone vibe with some interesting shapes and textures. Exotic lighting is key to make a space inviting and unique; also a splash of green with large palms sets the tone. For this design board, I paired a sleek, modern sectional and ottoman with warm textured and patterned accessories for a look that is both on trend and cozy at the same time.

Blue Ridge Log Cabins www.blueridgelogcabins.ca

Blue Ridge solid log, fully modular homes offer you a customized log home experience, keeping the beauty and character of natural wood homes but built faster and better than any kit on the market. That's why they've been featured as the “Most Economical Log Home” on HGTV’s “Best Ever Log Homes” on the premiere episode of HGTV’s “Amazing Log Homes” series, and on ABC’s 2011 Season Premiere of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Blue Ridge Log Cabins has created modular home-building practices for the upscale log cabin industry. They are reducing the cost, time, and risk normally associated with such construction thanks to its state-ofthe-art, 110,000-square-foot production facility, capable of completing as many as 15 custom homes from 500- to 8,000-squarefeet every week.

Blue Ridge offers the best of both worlds, delivering modular solid log homes in a stunning variety of sizes and styles with a seamless, stress-free, risk-free purchase experience. Factory-trained craftsmen build your dream home safely out of reach from the harsh outdoors. Quality is paramount, from logs to electrical, plumbing, light fixtures and even premium GE Appliances. By the time they leave your site, your home has remained dry - with the interior completely untouched by the elements. A strong commitment to high-quality innovative log home building has earned them thousands of customers, more than 90% of whom refer them to new buyers. The technology and process used to build Blue Ridge Log Cabins is exceptionally rare. Every home is built in a controlled, cutting-

edge production facility by factory-trained craftsmen. Before a house leaves the facility, plumbing and wiring have been finished, and all appliances, bathtubs, ceiling fans, windows, and other features have been installed. Quality is paramount, from logs to electrical, plumbing, light fixtures and even premium GE Appliances. A unique, one day process delivers a beautiful log home that’s set up by the day’s end. No lengthy delays, no contractor confusion and no scheduling headaches. Blue Ridge log cabins offer the highest quality home possible, with a seamless experience. All wood used for each home is stored indoors, and moisture content of each log is constantly and consistently monitored. Individual logs are marked for grade, moisture and placement. Every home includes high quality doors and windows that provide an extremely tight seal and prevent the growth and accumulation of mold. In house engineers design the homes to withstand up to 130 miles/hour winds. Throughout the entire process, Blue Ridge Quality Control Managers closely and thoroughly oversee the construction and assembling process over each house before it leaves the facility, ensuring every detail of your experience and dream home. Regardless of which floor plan you choose, one thing remains consistent: you can rest easy knowing that we only deliver fully constructed, pre-fabricated solid log homes, not do-it-yourself log home kits. Your dream home will be delivered on-time, with everything pre-installed including flooring, windows, doors, appliances, cabinets, plumbing, electrical wiring and even light bulbs!

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

Sunspace is well-known for manufacturing high quality sunrooms and railing systems but they are also know for innovating new and exciting products like the new Sunspace SunWalls! Many times, we have heard from our dealers and from the public, asking about privacy walls, windbreaks and taller applications than what is found in the typical railing industry. Finding an option that was affordable, easy to install, easy to maintain and offered both function and style proved to be difficult until we received an email from one of our dealers. We found inside an idea that was simple and elegant with a Japanese minimalist quality to it and the new Sunspace SunWall was born. In addition to being elegant and modern in style, the new SunWall system is easy to install, can be customized to your specific

project and is very easy to maintain. The result provides both a windbreak and privacy while remaining bright and inviting at the same time! The system is designed to work seamlessly with our other product offerings including railing systems and patio covers, so you can create a cohesive space quite easily. - Bob Newnham, www.sunspacesunrooms.com

GO BEYOND BASIC Just because you have a beautiful beach side cottage, doesn't mean that it has to be a basic clichĂŠ white and blue bungalow. I suggest a more avant-garde, curated approach to your cottage. Perhaps consider using a rich color in one of the rooms to add a sense of drama and coziness. Instead of choosing wood and basket elements, explore more striking and sculptural inspired pieces of furniture. It's all about creating a sense of ageless beauty and seducing the senses through design. A well designed space is one that tells your story before you've spoken a word because the very essence of who you are is woven into your design. To do that, it must be unique. A lot of people default to the classic staples and trend-based basics because it takes that extra special dedication to find out just what you like. I encourage you to do the work to find out what really resonates with you or hire someone to aid in that process so that your space meets its full potential. Be brave and choose pieces that inspire you. Life's too short for mediocrity and if there's one thing for sure, the world doesn't need another basic cottage. Decking and docks are expensive and after a few short years it just doesn’t look new or is at that time cycle where it needs work done to it. But who wants to spend their weekends at the cottage having to sand, scrape, power wash, scrub, prep and stain or refinish your decks, right? While there are other low-maintenance deck options, they are generally either wood, composites of wood fiber and other additives, pvc or fiberglass. These base materials, by their nature, are insulators and hold a lot of heat. Not what you want to walk on, on a bright and sunny day. They get warm and sometimes too hot to use comfortably. The Sunspace AlumaDeck & Dock product is a

great alternative. Sunspace AlumaDeck is 100% Aluminum and when installed correctly, it conducts heat away so that it does not get too hot to walk on. The product is available in 4 finishes including red cedar and weathered wood, perfect for the cottage look! AlumaDeck offers a number of other great features as well. First, aluminum does not catch fire so no more worries about hot embers or grease from the BB burning or damaging surfaces! Plus, the system is gap proof (no more lost change or jewelry!) and has built-in drainage to prevent that damp, musty smell from below. In fact, the area below the deck will be dry and waterproof, making it a useful space for storage or an additional outdoor living space below decks that are higher off the ground! - Bob Newnham, www.sunspacesunrooms.com

ARE YOU EMBARRASSED BY YOUR COTTAGE GARDEN? TRY THESE HELPFUL TIPS, IDEAS AND DIY PROJECTS TO BRING NEW LIFE TO YOUR COTTAGE GARDEN THIS SUMMER!

COTTAGE GARDENS Given the seasonal nature of cottage living, cottage gardening often boils down to what will survive, and more importantly flourish, with minimal maintenance and preparation.

When it comes to cottage gardening, the first rule is to start small – aka try to avoid biting off more than you can chew. There’s no point spending an entire summer cultivating an elaborate garden if you don’t have the time or means to maintain it all year, and into the next season.

Because there’s a chance you won’t be around in the springtime to get started on planting and coddling those pretty annuals, you might find it justifiable to skip the annuals altogether and plant long-lasting, low-maintenance perennials instead.

GET TECHIE Even though you may not be at your cottage year-round, your garden can still benefit from some good ole techie-ness, in the form of garden automation. For instance, set up your sprinklers on an app-controlled system, so you can water your cottage lawn and garden even from home!

A great way to organize your gardening tools is with the addition of a bar cart in your backyard. It creates a movable work surface where you can work on your potted plants without having to bend over. –

Rachio, www.rachio.com

HomeSense, www.HomeSense.ca

Employing clever landscaping techniques, such as pavers stone pathways, decorative boulders, brick barricades and other such non-botanical elements will not only look great, but will also cut down on the amount of plant-related maintenance you have to do, come cottage season.

Choose solar powered lights to add lighting for safety, style and function without the need to add electrical outlets or deal with wiring!

COZY OCEANFRONT MAKEOVER

Designed By Ami McKay www.purebyamimckay.com

This oceanfront home in Eagle Harbor is home to a mother and daughter. They wanted a peaceful, calm space that would feel like a hug. The finished home gives you the feeling you would get when walking through a beautifully designed Japanese garden. For the entrance, we chose a fun, light colored tile that creates a more inviting feel. We used the same tiles in the powder room since it is visible from the entrance.

To give the home a complete update while remaining on budget, we focused on repairing and refreshing the existing kitchen rather than doing a complete renovation. We started by painting the existing cabinetry to give the space a fresh feel. We then installed new lighting and replaced the island countertop, tiles, faucet, hardware and floor inserts. We also redid the attached breakfast nook for a cohesive, budget friendly makeover.

The existing laundry room off the kitchen was converted into a baker’s pantry using existing plumbing.

To make room for a built-in sauna, we completely renovated the master bathroom and moved the shower and toilet for a better layout. While the vanity, faucets and lighting have a vintage feel, the tub, shower and wash basins add a modern balance to the space. We added a whimsical floor tile and placed a window next to the side of the tub to overlook the ocean. I love the feel in this room. I could live here! - Ami McKay

This vanity was a dresser that the homeowner already owned. We repurposed it as a vanity that works perfectly in this bathroom.

Converting the existing laundry room into a baker's pantry meant we needed to find a new spot for the laundry. We converted the garage into a family room and laundry room/mud room with a built in dog bath. The dog bath was a brilliant, beautiful and functional touch.

GETAWAY IN THE CITY

BUDGET TIP: To stay on budget, we selected affordable slab door cabinets and beautiful, budget friendly hardwood floor! This allowed us to splurge on a stunning backsplash and fireplace!

This downtown penthouse was formally a bachelor pad. The homeowner is now married with small children and the penthouse has become their family's weekend getaway. The penthouse offered gorgeous city views and an amazing deck but was outdated and poorly laid out with tight spaces and a lack of storage. We installed pot lights, created space for a second room, change the layout of the dining room to take

advantage of the view, improved storage and added a fun bar off the deck. The homeowners wanted a clean, contemporary vibe for their city getaway that would be bright and modern while staying within a modest budget. Careful planning and some smart shopping allowed us to create a stunning family getaway that is modern without being too trendy so they can enjoy it for many years to come.

When designing a vacation home, it's important to stay on budget. There are many great products and decor that will let you achieve a gorgeous space without a big spend. Consider creating one major focal point, like a great fireplace!

I love these black paneled sliding doors. They are functional and stylish, creating a new room while also giving the home a cool city vibe when you first walk in.

RUSTIC LUXURY VIDEO TOUR

PARTING SHOTS National Design Editor, Glen Peloso gives us a look inside a luxury Gladden Island vacation rental project.

DESIGNER TIP: Normally, you select a vacation property because of the location. When renovating a vacation home, focus on the location, the view and the reason you fell in love with the property.

The luxury vacation home is on an island in the middle of the ocean off the coast of Belize, surrounded by the Coral reef. The homeowners wanted to create a vacation destination that offered a luxury experience without taking away from the natural beauty of the property. The center hall divides the bedrooms from the living and dining areas with sets of French doors that all open to allow in the ocean breeze. The second level of the home allows for sun worshipers and a games area. After night fall, the second level provides a star gazing area that is unsurpassed. Starlight is truly the only light in the middle of the ocean and the display is

awe inspiring. Needless to say, the interior space only becomes truly important when the sun goes down and the beauty of the sea fades to black. The interior living space provides for conversation or movies/ TV and gaming via satellite to entertain until it’s time for bed The property is very eco-friendly mainly because it is not connected to "the grid" of electricity and plumbing so it has to be self-reliant. Many of the luxury finishes, custom furniture and fixtures had to be imported but we also used local artisans and furniture makers to add additional beauty and character to the space.

The design inspiration came directly from Mother Nature, who’s skill set far surpasses anything that man can make. The view to the ocean was the focus of every room.

During the day, most exterior walls (which are mainly glass) slide out to meld the indoor and outdoor space together. All areas have coverage for sun protection but are essentially, outdoors.

The French doors along the main hall close up the sleeping areas, which are air conditioned for the hotter months, or the doors to the exterior can stay open, allowing guests to enjoy the sound of the ocean waves from behind the drapery that surrounds the bed.

I love this combination of classic chairs in blue with a native wood species table in the dining room. The chairs, from PolArt in Mexico, are meant to be used as outdoor furniture and add an elegant yet durable touch!
