LEADER CLINTON COUNTY

“The People Have The Right To Know”

Incoming sheriff alleges fraudulent work hours

A.J. Carrel, Clinton County’s incoming sheriff, took to social media last week to accuse leaders in the current department of submitting fraudulent work hours. Clinton County Sheriff Larry Fish denied the claims.

In a post from his election profile on Facebook, Carrel accused Clinton

County Lieutenant Jerry Ramos and Major Trevor Ballard of submitting hours to the county that they didn’t work. Carrel wrote that Ramos works full time in Lathrop and part time in Gower, and that “Ballard has been to work physically about 14 times (since the election),” but both men have been allowed to continue collecting full-time salaries.

Carrel went on to write

that Sheriff Fish has only been back to work a few times “because he is too busy working in the city for a private security company in his county-issued vehicle.”

This past August, Carrel defeated Sheriff Fish in the Primary Election for the Republican nomination to the office. With no Democrat running for sheriff in the General Election earlier

this month, Carrel won the office outright in August.

Sheriff Fish told The Leader that both Ramos and Ballard are in salaried positions, and as such, they’ve worked more hours than what they’ve been paid for, noting that salaried positions don’t turn in timesheets. He added that Ramos doesn’t drive a county vehicle and he is still employed fulltime with the department,

and that Ballard has been to work far more than the 14 times mentioned in the post.

Sheriff Fish also denied that he had been to work just a few times since the election, adding that like Ramos and Ballard—given the nature of being a salaried officeholder—he has worked many hours for the county beyond what he is paid for.

“I was there this week, last week, the week before last,”

he continued. The sheriff added that his position comes with four weeks of vacation each year, though he hasn’t taken any of that time in 2024 and took just a week in each of the previous two years.

As far as working elsewhere, Sheriff Fish said that he has his own consulting company and does not drive the county’s vehicle when

PRESS RELEASE

Residents and property owners within Plattsburg will be receiving letters from the city regarding a lead service line inventory (LSLI) to be undertaken over the course of the next several months. The inventory is a requirement of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The purpose of the inventory is to determine if any service

lines—water lines leading from the water meter to the home—contain lead materials. Lead can enter water through lead pipes which can cause health issues.

“There’s no need to be concerned about lead coming from the water main,” said Plattsburg City Administrator Steve Garrett. “Water produced by the City of Plattsburg is tested regularly and any traces of lead found in the water

get. He attributed that to the department providing a police presence at planning and zoning and other meetings, which they couldn’t have accounted for at budget time, and mentioned that they’ve spent upwards of $15,000 already for the required long-term supervision of an inmate being

tecting taxpayer money and it wasn’t a personal move.

“We’ve done what we felt like we can do as a commission,” said First District Commissioner Jay Bettis about the decision.

The Clinton County Commissioners have addressed the concerns that some in the sheriff’s department are being paid for hours they haven’t worked. They said Thursday, November 7, that they requested the relevant pay data from the clerk’s office and subsequently turned it over to Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney Brandi McClain for consideration.

The commissioners said Thursday that they want to ensure they’re pro-

Specifically, they submitted the payroll history report from August 15 (shortly after the election) through the end of October for all members of the department’s command staff—Ramos, Ballard, Captain O’Roark and Corey Sloan. The commissioners noted that the report doesn’t include hours worked, since

the command staff is salaried and doesn’t turn in time sheets. They also specified that Captain O’Roark didn’t take any kind of salaried payment from the county in that timeframe.

Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney Brandi McClain confirmed Thursday, November 7, that her office received the information from the county commissioners. She said the information would likely be forwarded to an investigatory agency. The commissioners said Tuesday, November

12, that they met with McClain on that same day, during which she suggested the commission reach out to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Presiding Commissioner Patrick Clark said that the MSHP declined to conduct an administrative investigation because there are no timesheets against which to compare the pay (since the positions are salaried).

Sheriff Larry Fish provided The Leader with a written statement on Tuesday, which can be found nearby.

Sheriff Fish Responds to Carrel’s claims

Editor’s Note: The following is a written statement from Clinton County Sheriff Larry Fish regarding allegations made by incoming Sheriff A.J. Carrel via Facebook.

The incoming Sheriff, AJ Carrel, recently posted on social media yet another piece for the public to view which has little to no merit. Is this an indication to the public of how he will be running his office—off of pure drama and revenge? Creating rumors and discontent throughout the county, then using the chaos and division to his advantage?

In his post, Mr. Carrel makes it obvious he is uneducated about payroll, or he would know there is a difference between employees who are paid hourly and salaried employees.

Captain O’Roark is an hourly employee who has always turned in timesheets which reflect actual hours worked and, ultimately, the hours for which he was paid.

Lt. Ramos and Major Ballard, along with myself, are salaried. Salaried employees aren’t required to track their working hours because they are entitled to receive their base pay no matter how many hours they’ve clocked in at work during the workweek. Federal and state law doesn’t require salaried employees to fill out timesheets to track their hours for pay purposes.

Since I was elected sheriff in 2017, and since Ballard and Ramos became salaried employees, each of us has averaged 60- to 80-hour work weeks, rarely taking vacation or sick time.

But that’s not the picture Mr. Carrel wants you to see. He wants to make sure I never run for sheriff again and never pose any threat to him remaining in office. News flash: I have filed my retirement paperwork and have decided I will not run for sheriff again. So Mr. Carrel, you can rest easy in that respect.

I fully expect Mr. Carrel will do everything he can to blame his deficiencies on me. He will try to launch criminal campaigns and have the Missouri POST Commission

and highway patrol conduct investigations. This is why I already have in place an audit of evidence, complete inventory of equipment, and a digital snapshot of all digital records. Because I know he will manufacture items to fulfill this quest.

As for me working other jobs: Yes, I consult on the side. No, I don’t use a county vehicle as he claims to gain more dramatization for his post and create an uproar. Yes, I still work 30 to 50 hours a week at the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and have worked more than 50 days since the August election.

Mr. Carrel claims I am “spending sheriff’s office money like it’s going out of style.” At this time, we are collectively on budget for the year, though in February Mr. Carrel predicted that we would be out of money by August.

It’s mid-November. We still have money and we are still on budget. That will be offset by the requirement to provide round-the-clock security coverage for a couple of inmates who were in the hospital recently. That $20,000 bill for overtime will

likely lead to a budget overage, but we had no choice except to provide the security detail to preserve the safety of the hospital staff and the citizens at large.

Has an employee been placed on administrative leave? Yes. Details on this personnel issue cannot be discussed at this time but will be made public upon completion of the ongoing investigation.

You see, Mr. Carrel, you are very upset even though I allowed you to resign in lieu of termination for having a sexual affair with a female subordinate. After this came to light, more females came forward with claims of sexual harassment by you. This led you to the path of vengeance on which you remain to this day. You are also on a mission because I terminated your incoming undersheriff, Joshua Hamner, and ultimately discovered that he fraudulently filed a search warrant return on a homicide case. This leads to Brady and Giglio problems and the question of how many other cases he lied to federal or state courts on. Time will tell.

You say I need to hold myself and others accountable. I have held you—and others—accountable, at least one of which has been one of your most vocal supporters during your campaign and to this day. I am in the process of conducting an investigation to hold accountable a current employee for possible misappropriation and/ or theft of funds.

Holding people accountable has created a lot of animosity toward me, as evidenced by you and several of your campaign cronies whom you have promised positions in the sheriff’s office when you assume control. Unfortunately, the public does not know the truth in these matters. They only know what you have told them in your efforts to make yourself look good by making me look bad.

I am okay with that. I will leave this office in January with my head held high, knowing that I performed the duties of my office, upheld my sworn oath as sheriff, and stood for what is right and true and lawful, in spite of the backlash I knew I would suffer at the hands of your good old boys club. It does trouble me that all the public will ever know with you as the county’s chief law enforcement officer is what you want them to know and believe. But I will sleep well at night knowing I did what was right for the citizens of this county, in spite of your constant criticism and attacks.

Editor’s Note: A.J. Carrel declined to comment at this time on Sheriff Fish’s stated reasons for Carrel’s past departure from the department.

Friday accident on I-35

A three-vehicle accident on Friday caused traffic back-ups on Interstate 35 near Lathrop.

DAR Tree Dedication

As the nation draws closer to its 250th year of existence, the Missouris Shoal Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution has started to commemorate the upcoming occasion. Chapter members were at the Lathrop Antique Showgrounds on Saturday, November 9, to dedicate a tree and plaque honoring Revolutionary War patriots. The plaque states, “This marker pays tribute to the patriots who fought for American independence, upholding the noble ideals of liberty and fostering the creation of a new nation through their bravery and determination.”

The accident occurred on I-35 about three miles north of Lathrop at approximately 10:15 a.m. A 2025 Freightliner Cascadia and a 1999 Ford F250 were stopped for traffic when a 2024 Volvo Trailer rear ended the Ford.

Remembering Mike Russell on Veterans Day

You know you’re growin’ older when... “The older you get, the more clearly you remember things that never happened.” Mark Twain

* * * *

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Since that proclamation, America has taken time to honor those that have served and those who continue to serve in our armed forces.

Mike Russell, of Plattsburg, who served bravely as a Marine in Vietnam, was one of those we honor on that special day.

He not only served our country but served the Clinton County R-III School District as their maintenance supervisor for decades. While some might not understand the value of that position, Superintendent Dr. Richard Mandell knew full well where the ‘rubber met the road’ in running the school district. That’s why they met over coffee every morning before the beginning of the school day.

Mike made sure the cogs of those wheels were in action every school day— a very important role in the education of our most precious resource, our children. He did so faithfully.

Michael J. Russell, 75, of Plattsburg, Missouri,

passed away Saturday, September 14, 2024.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday morning September 24, 2024, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church Plattsburg, Missouri. The pews of the church were filled as friends and relatives gathered to honor him. Father Drew, who serves as the priest at the parish, provided an eloquent eulogy about his service to God and Country:

On October 7, 1571 a huge naval battle took place in the Gulf of Corinth. On that day, Catholic forces routed the Muslim navy, which ended Muslim plans to overtake Europe by sea. October 7 has since been the feast of Our Lady of Victory, or Our Lady of the Rosary. For before the great battle, every soldier and sailor on board the Catholic ships was given a rosary. And afterward it was believed the Holy League’s victory in one of the greatest maritime battles in history was made possible through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mary. Maritime. Mariner. Marine. The Latin marinus means “of the sea.”Semper Fi (fidelis) is the Marine motto. It is from the Latin meaning “always faithful.” “God, Country, Corp” is the famous slogan of the United States Marine Corp. The slogan is seen on recruiting posters. A poster I once saw had a quote from a Navy admiral. He stated: The Army and the Navy are

run like traditional military services. The Air Force is run like a corporation, but the Marine Corps is a religion.

God, Country, Corp. The Marines put God first. And Marines traditionally are the ones who go in first. They see a lot of carnage, a lot of evil, a lot of death.

As many of you know, Mike Russell was a Marine. And as a very young man he was shipped to the other side of the world to “go in first” in the jungles of Vietnam. Like many other Vietnam veterans upon returning home to the states, Mike probably did not experience the warmest of welcomes. Men who should have been honored were treated with disrespect, mocked, ridiculed, and even spit on—as if the young soldiers who went into harm’s way had somehow instigated the war themselves.

Mike’s sister, Helen, told me Mike, like so many of his brothers in arms, had to battle with nightmares throughout his life due to his time in Vietnam. So, Mike suffered. But through that pain he opened himself up to the needs of others.

Fr. Schneider, his pastor for the past five years and who gave Mike the Last Rites, said Mike loved Plattsburg, and St. Ann Parish, and was well known in the community for his works of charity and being a good man and citizen. Helen said

I was reminded how fortunate we are that Clinton County has such a well-equipped, full-service, award-winning hospital. It is easy to forget as we drive past it daily; it sort of fades into the surrounding scenery.

However, Tuesday at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce meeting, Assistant Administrator and Marketing Director Carol Arthur delivered a guest presentation that brought the hospital’s significance into focus.

As host of the monthly luncheon, Arthur related how limited delivery services are in Northwest Missouri (with only Mosaic and CRMC offering delivery) and how several pregnant mothers’ lives (and the lives of their babies) had been saved by Dr. Barry Littlejohn and his team in the past few years.

With very few delivery hospitals in Northwest Missouri, drive times have increased when mothers go into labor. CRMC Administrator Joseph Abrutz detailed how pregnant moms have experienced complications en route to Kansas City. Had CRMC and Littlejohn’s team not

a

been staffed, those mothers might not have made it to Liberty or North Kansas City in time.

We are blessed.

Yes, there are some services not offered at our hospital, but when minutes count due to stroke symptoms or complications of pregnancy, it is good to know they are here for us.

In addition to disappearing delivery rooms, kidney dialysis is also in scarce supply. If it weren’t for CRMC, patients from all over Northwest Missouri would have longer drive times for the life-saving service.

Quality of life is definitively better with CRMC at the crossroads of US 36 and I-35. From “Lunch and Learns” hosted by the hospital to educate patients on available treatments and healthier living options, to

an extensive exercise trail around the south campus, CRMC offers numerous benefits.

CRMC is a Level III Stroke Center, able to diagnose and treat those experiencing a stroke sooner and lessen long-term effects.

CRMC has 18 satellite clinics located in Northwest Missouri in places like Polo, Eagleville and King City. They truly bring quality medical care to you. I personally enjoy seeing my primary care provider in Plattsburg instead of driving south or west 30 to 45 minutes.

Another area that needs recognition is the excellent work in rehab that is taking place right here at CRMC. Recently, the hospital received a national award for having one of the best Physical Rehab Centers in the country by Newsweek magazine. CRMC rehab team offers in-patient and outpatient rehab services.

I may be critical of various aspects of life in Clinton County at the moment (Lord knows there are a host of subjects), but sometimes you have to step back and appreciate what is right with it, as well. CRMC is a gem and a shining example of what is right with our county.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The right to choose and maternity as healthcare

My birthday is always extremely melancholy because I miss my birth mother. The reality is I never knew her.

From those who did, they claimed she was bright, pretty, and smart. Actually, she was described by some as “The Sweetheart of Plattsburg.”

She attended PHS and obviously took pride in being a cheerleader. You could tell by her big smile in the 1950 yearbook photos.

It all seemed perfect until a handsome, tough teen and bad-boy from Gower cruised into town on a motorcycle. The dealbreaker was he attended Gower High; Plattsburg’s athletic arch rival (we won’t discuss him setting the study hall wastebasket on fire, which caused his expulsion two weeks before graduation! But, Edgerton High accepted him and allowed him to graduate!).

Dad and many other

teens in the area frequented “The Lyric” theater in downtown Plattsburg.

Coincidentally, my mother worked at the popcorn machine in the lobby. When he saw her for the first time, he was love struck! He didn’t have the nerve to speak, but got sick that evening from eating several bags of popcorn!

The very next week, he went back and had mustered up the courage to ask her for a date. However, his optimism was dashed when an older lady was popping corn. So, he asked if the girl last week would be back. The lady assured him she would. When Dad asked if she knew that girl, the lady replied, “She’s my daughter.”

That was just the beginning of a relationship that almost drove my grandad out of his ever-loving mind, and he took it to his grave!

One afternoon during cheerleading practice, dad pulled up in front of Plattsburg High on his Harley.

Vroom, Vroom. When my mom saw him, she smiled and waved, ran over and jumped on the back of his bike! He took off in a flash as a waft of cigarette smoke trailed behind. Mouths gasped in astonishment!

One of the cheerleaders remarked, “Her father is not going to like this one little bit.” She was right! Fast-forward. After a year of courtship, my mother and father married. Then, another year later, while Dad was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, I was born at Sisters Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. His mother called him on the base and gave him the good news. “Son, you have a beautiful baby daughter and she and your wife are well.”

The Air Force gave Dad immediate leave so he started the long drive back. About 3 a.m., he drove through a small town and saw a phone booth near an all-night diner. He stopped for coffee and decided to call his mom. She

was crying when she answered the phone! She said they had just lost my mom and her final words were, “Tell Charles not to drive fast and make Mylissa an orphan.”

As he crawled behind the wheel, shock, disbelief and numbness engulfed him at the same time. He was about two hours away from the hospital and does not remember much other than keeping the car between the ditches.

Maternity is health care! If it wasn’t necessary, then why are we making provisions? Long ago, women did not have the medical resources we have today, but even so, why is the U.S. on the lower rung for current maternal mortality rates?

Birth control didn’t become mainstream until the late 60s, so women died from birthing so many children! (And their husbands would remarry and have another go with a new wife!).

Now, I’m not going

THE CLINTON COUNTY LEADER

to write pages (trust me, I could if I chose) of medical details on pregnancy in an effort to convince anyone that women’s bodies belong to them, and not to any political power scheme cloaked in evangelical dogma.

I will only say this—a woman’s choice is rightfully hers and hers alone! Case in point? Years ago, when China imposed strict population control laws, married couples were allowed one child. If women got pregnant with the second, they were afraid to leave their homes! Why?

If law enforcement discovered their pregnancy, women were arrested and taken to a facility where the fetus at any stage was aborted. Not to mention pregnant women walking down the street were taken into custody and given “the third degree!” These mothers had no choice! The pro-lifers who chose Susan B. Anthony as their role model misconstrued Anthony’s plight by a country mile. Anthony and other Vic-

torian women were forced to have abortions by selfish husbands who did not want the financial responsibility of additional children. Many of those same husbands also escaped low moral exposure by forcing their concubines to have abortions. Did any of these women have a choice? Nevertheless, whether any woman on this earth is forced by law to have an abortion, or not have one, is not allowing her the right to control the health of her own body.

My mother chose whom to date, marry, to conceive a child and chose a doctor. But she didn’t choose to bleed to death at the hands of negligence. Her choice to live was stolen by her doctor, so I’m choosing today to take it back by saying her name:

“Angie Elizabeth TransueStutesman!”

Four local cross country runners compete at state championships

A pair of East Buchanan freshmen runners made it to the Missouri Class 2 State Cross Country Championships in their very first year of high school competition.

excellent performances considering the weather. They raced well and leave us in a great place to build both a boys and a girls team next year. They both have their sights set on making it to state all four years in their high school career.”

For both Max Gagnon of Lathrop and Loralie Matsukevich of Plattsburg, Sat-

urday was an opportunity to finish their stellar senior seasons on the state’s biggest stage.

Matsukevich ran the course in 22:46 to place 77th in the girls race.

“Loralie has been the most consistent runner all season long,” said Plattsburg head coach Tim Stockdale. “Even though this is

her first year running cross country, she has been the leader of our whole cross country team. She ran a personal best at state. That was impressive considering the conditions (rained the entire time).”

Gagnon finished the boys race with a time of 20:20 to take 125th on the day.

“He’s had a great career,” said Lathrop head coach Rich Mudd, who also noted the tough weather in Columbia. “He’s a threetime state qualifier. He made our leaderboard, one of the top five kids throughout the years. He’s always been a leader. He came in as a freshman and just continued to improve.”

Plattsburg slips past St. Joe Christian, 56-48, to make title game

The Plattsburg Tigers and St. Joseph Christian Lions traded punch after punch on Friday night until, but in the end, Plattsburg preserved the upper hand.

The third-seeded Tigers are headed back to the district championship game after defeating secondseeded Christian, 56-48, in the semifinals in St. Joseph. With the victory, Plattsburg will visit a familiar nemesis in Bishop LeBlond (8-1);

the two teams played twice in the regular season, with top-seeded LeBlond winning in both contests.

Plattsburg (6-3) built a 22-8 lead in the first half on Friday against St. Joseph Christian (6-3), but the Lions responded with a 40-point outburst in the second half to climb back into contention. But nearly every time Christian scored, Plattsburg countered with a score of its own, as the two combined with 11 touchdowns in the second half.

Plattsburg head coach Brandon Boswell said it was a tough, physical game, and that he was proud of the tenacity the kids showed in closing out the victory.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game that would require us to take care of the ball on offense and win the line of scrimmage, and tackle well on defense,” he said. “St. Joe Christian has been very good at the running game and we were able to get the turnovers and stops that we needed.

Our defensive line of Donte Bingham, Caden McLallen and Jaden Shoniber really did a good job of winning the line of scrimmage and eliminating the dive phase of the triple option.

“Offensively Jaiveon, Donte, Gavin Boyle and Jessiah Berry had big nights.

Our offensive line of Jackson Crouse, Luke Parra and Jaden Shoniber made some great blocks and gave Jaiveon time to throw the ball.

Jessiah had a kickoff return for a touchdown that was

huge, as the scoring went back and forth in the second half. Again, very proud of our kids and coaches.”

Plattsburg and St. Joseph Christian combined for more than 800 yards of offense, with Plattsburg racking up 358 total yards.

Jaiveon Grayson had a stellar night at quarterback, completing 11 of his 13 pass attempts for 210 yards and 210 yards without an interception. Boyle pulled in all three touchdown passes, finishing the night with six

catches for 139 yards. Berry had four catches for 63 yards.

Donte Bingham continued his stellar campaign at running back, scoring three touchdowns on just 10 carries while gaining 164 yards. He also led the team with seven tackles.

Berry had six tackles while Boyle and Keegan Gudde each had five tackles. McLallen and Zach Annis each had four tackles.

Cameron upsets Richmond, will play Maryville for district crown

After losing the first six games of the year, the Cameron Dragons football team is headed to the district championship for the first time since 2013.

The Dragons (5-6), seeded fourth in the Missouri Class 3, District 8 tournament, upended top-seeded Richmond (6-4) on Friday night in Ray County, earning a spot in the title game this week (again on the road) against second-seeded Maryville (7-4).

This is also the first time since 2013 that the Dragons have won five-straight games; coincidentally, that same year, Cameron defeated Richmond in the district semifinals before moving on to face Maryville in the title game.

The Dragons continued to dominate on the ground, running for 464 yards. Hudson Lodder led the team with 187 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown. Reid Smith ran for

87 yards on just four touches, Chase Bell ran for 84 yards and a touchdown and Talan Eddins had 57 yards on just five carries. Gage Jones needed just two carries—including one for a touchdown—to rack up 49 yards.

On defense, Cameron forced three turnovers while holding Richmond to just 217 yards. Bell had 9.5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jones had seven tackles (including one for a loss and a sack) and Smith had five tackles and two interceptions.

While Maryville rolls into to the district finals in less dominant fashion than they’re accustomed to, their four losses on the year have come against some of the stiffest competition in the state. That includes St. Pius (10-1) and Savannah (8-3) locally, as well as mid-Missouri powerhouse Blair Oaks (9-1) and Lutheran North (9-1) out of St. Louis.

East Buchanan Bulldogs fall to rival Mid-Buch in district semifinal

The East Buchanan Bulldogs saw their 2024 season come to an end at the hands of a familiar foe last Friday, November 8, when the Bulldogs traveled to Mid-Buchanan and lost to the Dragons in the semifinals of the Missouri Class 2, District 8 tournament, 20-7.

These storied rivals continued their streak of

Steve

facing off in district play, and much like their first meeting of this season, this was a defensive slugfest.

East Buchanan jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the opening quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by senior Aidan Smith. The Bulldogs’ defense was in top form in the first half, holding Mid-Buchanan scoreless for the first time this season. However, in the

third quarter, Mid-Buchanan got on the scoreboard with a ten-yard touchdown pass. Clinging to a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, East Buchanan was unable to extend the lead and allowed a second MidBuchanan touchdown pass. The Bulldogs’ comeback aspirations came to a close when the Mid-Buchanan defense extended the lead

Mike served the local VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in all capacities for years, including commander. The only position he did not hold for the VFW was that of treasurer. He wanted nothing to do with the money. That’s interesting about money. Helen said Mike would see a child at school with no shoes and he would get the principal money to get that child’s feet covered. And she said Mike always seemed to be buying poorer people food.

And so, in Mike, we had a Marine, who in Christ-like fashion clothed the naked and fed the hungry. He also said the Rosary every day, as he was devoted to his Mother Mary.

It’s interesting that today, Sep 24., is traditionally another Marian feast day. For 300 years on September 24, the Church celebrated a feast called Our Lady of Mercy, or Our Lady of Ransom. Muslim pirates from Africa for centuries raided the southern coasts of Spain, France and Italy, and abducted men, women and children for their slave markets and harems.

A religious order called the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, was founded in Spain to ransom these

slaves, and save them from such a dire fate. Its members, who became known as the Mercedarians, collected money and traveled into Africa on dangerous missions to ransom slaves, sometimes offering their own lives in exchange for slaves’ freedom. The funeral liturgy, therefore, is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief.

So, that is what we do. We pray to Christ, He who took on the form of a slave, and exchanged His own life to pay our ransom. We pray to Christ, who was treated with disrespect, mocked, ridiculed, and even spit on, as He went to war with sin and death to save us.

And we pray in a particular way for Mike Russell, the Rosary-praying Marine, who went in first and who put God first and was Semper Fi (always faithful). We pray that Christ comes and takes Mike home to live with Him in peace and happiness forever in heaven.

Amen!

“I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a lot more as they get older, and then it dawned on me—they’re cramming for their final exam.” George Carlin. (Trivia answer: Veterans Day was first called Armistice Day. Congress approved the holiday in 1938 to commemorate those who fought in WWI. Later, a shoe merchant from Emporia, Kansas, named Al King started a movement that successfully turned Armistice Day into Veterans Day and expanded it to honor all U.S. veterans).

Leading the East Buchanan defense Friday night was sophomore Landon Smith with 13 total tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery. Senior Kyler Paxton had a strong performance in his final game in a Bulldog helmet, finishing with ten total tackles. Meanwhile, fellow senior Landon De-

On the offensive side of the ball, East Buchanan struggled against a stout Mid-Buchanan defense, finishing with just 113 yards of total offense. Junior quarterback Phoenix Baugh completed four of 13 passes for 40 yards. His leading receiver was senior Caden Ray with one catch for 18
