souri Connections Academy.”

Kiona came to Missouri Connections Academy in 2020 to be in a safe learning environment during the pandemic. Her mother Rebecca said they also believed the more individualized approach to learning that the online school offers, with the support of teachers, would be a better fit for her daughter.

Rebecca said that making the switch to the virtual classroom was hard at first. However, things got easier for Kiona in her second

year. She now loves the school and her teachers.

“Coming to Missouri Connections Academy was the best decision we have ever made,” Rebecca said.

Virtual school is a great fit for a variety of students and each student is unique.

Those who attend Missouri Connections Academy come from different backgrounds and choose fulltime online school for various reasons. Some students prefer to take ownership of their education and benefit from the flexibility that virtual school offers, while others are looking for a safe learning environment.

Do You Know Who Abused This Cat?

Artie was a male short haired black cat with white paws and chest. We were caring for him. Food, water and shelter were provided. We were actively attempting to live trap him and take him in for rescue.

Someone shot him on December 19th or 20th around the area of Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital and Eastgate Shopping Center.

He was found paralyzed and suffering from hypothermia a couple days later after he drug himself back to his house. X-rays showed a pellet lodged in his spine. An animal abuser shot him and left him paralyzed in sub-degree temperature. He suffered tremendously before he was found and humanely euthanized.

Be a voice for Artie and all abused animals. If you know who did this, please contact Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital at 660-359-3516.

RootED

rootEd partners with rural high schools throughout the state to provide funding and training for dedicated college and career advisors. These advisors are hired by the local school district and work with seniors to help navigate their postsecondary options and choose a path that will provide them with career success and economic stability. rootEd currently works with 135 schools across the state, 13 of which are in North-Central and Northwest Missouri. Advisors meet daily with students to help them complete college and scholarship applications, set up job shadowing opportunities, meet with military recruiters, complete the FAFSA, or take interest inventories, among other things. They also take students to career fairs and college visits or host their events at the school. Launched in 2018, rootEd was started by a group of philanthropists, families, and businesses in the belief that every student should graduate high school on a path to career success and economic stability. Kasey Bailey, rootEd Regional Director for the Pony Express Region (North Central and Northwest Missouri), said, “My favorite thing about rootEd is the people. I work with fantastic advisors in area high schools who are passionate and knowledgeable about what they do and are making a difference for kids. I also have an amazing team of colleagues throughout the state and at OTC who

challenge me and who are just all-around great people.”

Local Advisors include Whitley Richman (Trenton) and Brock Goodman (Gallatin). Whitley and Brock have both met one-on-one with 100% of their seniors.

Nearly all those students have plans for what they will do after high school graduation. Whitley, the rootEd Postsecondary Advisor at Trenton High School, said, “The rootEd program focuses on ALL postsecondary options.

College is a great option for some students, but not all. rootEd advisors help all students by promoting workforce, military, and college-bound students.”

Currently, over 80 percent of seniors at Trenton High School have created a postsecondary plan that involves either attending college or technical school, entering the military, or applying for a full-time position at a local workplace.

Brock Goodman, the rootEd Postsecondary Advisor at Gallatin High School, said, “I enjoy getting to work with kids and to hear about their plans and ideas. rootEd is a great step in the right direction in helping kids plan for the next season in life.”

rootEd is a national project, not just a Missouri effort. The program also works with three schools in Tennessee, over twenty schools in Texas, and one in Idaho. rootEd hopes to be able to find sustainable support to keep the project going in Missouri and nationwide, expand efforts in

existing states, and grow into other states. Kasey said, “We hope this effort gains enough traction to continue supporting our current schools and grow to serve many more rural schools throughout the state and nationwide.”

The goal of advisors is to have a 100 percent FAFSA completion rate among students who plan on attending college in the fall and have advisors to placed permantently in the school districts for years to come. Whitley went on to say, “Adding a College and Career Advisor has lightened the load for our school counselors, allowing more focus on mental health. In addition, preparing graduating seniors with workready skills and connections will have a direct positive impact on the community of Trenton.” Brock said, “Having a dedicated person to help counsel students with making post-graduation decisions takes some pressure off students and families and leads to better outcomes.”

Kasey said, “rootEd itself is very new, but the industry we serve (education) isn’t. The demands on schools are changing, and it’s difficult for school personnel to keep up. We see ourselves as additional support to help schools adapt to the increasing challenges they face.”

For more information about rootEd, individuals can visit rootedalliance.org, rootEd Alliance on LinkedIn, and #rootedmissouri on social media.

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs are currently 3-7 on the season, with wins over Gallatin and Gilman City at the Gallatin Tournament, and a win over Marceline. The Lady Bulldogs losses have been close games up until the fourth quarter when they got into foul trouble or shots started falling for the other side. Starting sophomore Mirena King was injured in the game against South Harrison girls and sat out during the Holiday Hoops game. Coach Cool relies on his starting five to put their best on the floor. With no seniors, the Lady Bulldogs are trying to improve as a team to eventually start winning games. With two conference losses the Lady Bulldogs are sitting at the bottom four of the Grand River Conference. They’ll look to take the winning games over Gallatin and Mays-

ville in their next couple games.

The Trenton Bulldogs boys’ team is currently 2-8 on the season, with wins over Marceline and their Holiday Hoops game against Brookfield at the Ketcham Community Center. The Bulldogs rely mainly on starters Kiefer Tolson and Gabe Novak for most of their points during games, while the other boys on the team contribute a lot to the defensive side of the court. The Trenton boys have no conference wins so far and are sitting at the bottom of the Grand River Conference. The Bulldogs will have a tough next couple games with a rematch against the Gallatin Bulldogs and then the Maysville Wolverines.

The Trenton Girls Wrestling team has three individuals, with Avery Clark being their biggest threat. The Lady wrestlers don’t make a

big impact with team points as there is so few of them, but they put all their energy into the matches they do get. Clark placed second at the Tiger Mat Classic in Marceline and Sahara Meyers took fifth. During the Trenton quad the girls where unable to have any complete matches.

The Trenton Boys Wrestling team have been to three big tournaments in the wrestling world. During the Tiger Mat Classic, they placed first as a team with three first place finishes from Mason Rongey, Hunter McAtee, and Sam Gibson. At the Battle at Katy Trail, the team was 14th out of 43 teams, Gibson again took first. At the Tom Hayes dual tournament, even with a shortage of kids, the team went 4-1 on duals. Gibson has reached his 100th win of the year and is currently undefeated this season.
