GCHD Signs WIC Contract for 2024 The Grundy County Health Department announces a contract continuance to provide WIC services for federal fiscal year 2024 has been signed with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special supplemental nutrition program providing services to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to their fifth birthday based on nutritional risk and income eligibility. The primary services provided are healthy, supplemental food, risk assessment, nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding promotion and support, health screening and referrals to health care. To be eligible for WIC, applicants must have an income of less than or equal to 185 percent of the poverty level and be at nutritional risk. Migrant families are also eligible.

WIC supplemental food packages are specially chosen to provide foods high in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. Eligible women and children receive fortified milk and cheese, eggs, whole grain bread products, hot or cold cereals, 100 percent fruit juices, and fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. The WIC program recommends breastfeeding, provides breastfeeding support, baby foods, and infant cereal. For women who cannot or choose not to breastfeed, infants may receive supplemental, iron fortified formula. WIC participants obtain their foods by using their eWIC cards for specific items at participating local grocery stores and pharmacies. Trenton R-9 to Host Halloween Carnival Trenton R-9 groups and organizations throughout the district will host their annual Halloween Carnival on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the Trenton High School Commons and Gym. Come out and enjoy crafts, games and food. A costume contest will be held in the THS gym at 7 p.m. with cash prizes being awarded to the top five in each age group, infant to fourth grade, so costumes are definitely encouraged. High school organizations taking part inlcude FBLA, FCCLA, Student Council, FTA, Guilded drama group, Key Club, Spanish Club, Volleyball team and the THS Bulldog

BRIEFS NCMC Closed October 20

North Central Missouri College will be closed on Friday, October 20, in observance of college fall break. This closing includes all buildings and offices at Main, Barton, and Savannah locations, and no in-person classes will be held. The Ketcham Community Center will close at 6:00 p.m. on October 20 and reopen for regular hours of business on Saturday, October 21. NCMC will reopen on Monday, October 23 for regular hours of business.

Spickard City Aldermen Meet

The Spickard Board of Aldermen held a meeting on Monday, October 9, 2023 at 6 pm in Spickard City Hall. Mayor Alan Tharp called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. and roll call was made. The agenda was approved by a unanimous vote, as were the minutes from the September 11, 2023 meeting and the payment of all September bills. The next meeting of the Spickard Board of Alderment is set for November 13, 2023.

“The Savannah Sipping Society” Coming to Hoover Theater Sometimes life throws you a curveball. You can either duck or smash it out of the park. “The Savannah Sipping Society” is a play about four women who decide to make the most of the curve balls in their lives. After meeting at a Hot Yoga party, they decide exercise is not for them and they find that they each need a new perspective on life. Jinx Jenkins leads the other three women to try things they have never tried. Through their adventures, they learn that life is worth living to its fullest because you never know when things will change. Area School Boards Discuss Grant Money, Lead Testing The Pleasant View RVI, Spickard R-II, Grundy R-V, Laredo R-VII and TriCounty R-VII school boards recently met to discuss bids and grant money and hear reports on lead testing. Pleasant View R-VI The Pleasant View R-VI Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Board members present were President Damien Little, Vice President Ben Thomas, and members Jen-

nifer Belvel, Laurie Frisbie and Derek McCauslin. Members Tim Miller and Jack Bethards were absent, although Bethards joined the meeting via telephone at 7:40 p.m. Superintendent, Rebecca Steinhoff, was also present. President Little called the meeting to order at 7:31 p.m. The consent items, consisting of the agenda, minutes from the previous meeting, financial statemet and bills, were approved. gave an update on their school year. In old business, discussion was held on school improvements. The new doors for the school are almost complete. This was paid for with the $50,000 safety grant money. There was a discussion held regarding draining issues on the east side of the building. A bid has been advertised for work to be done to fix this issue. Lead testing has been completed at the building with 47 locations being tested. Results are

pending. Under new business, the Facility Maintenance Plan was discussed with no action taken. A bid from Zane Jones for a beef market animal for $1.65/ pound for live weight with the approximate weight of the animal being 1,500 pounds was approved by the board. Superintendent Steinhoff reported that basketball games will begin next week. Cheerleaders have new skirts thanks to the Pleasant View Community Club.

Pleasant View received $10,000 for the Grow Your Own grant. This grant is used to help employees and former graduates who are working to become teachers. Pleasant View did not receive the second round of Safety Grant Money. It was only awarded to the schools that did not receive funding the first round. Pleasant View was selected to receive the Missouri Quality Preschool Grant. This grant was for 4year-old students. It will
