19th Annual High School Holiday Hoops Set to Tip-Off December 16 The countdown is on for the 19th Annual High School Holiday Hoops Basketball Showcase presented by the NCMC Foundation; the schedule will be announced soon! The 2023 edition of Holiday Hoops will tip off at the Ketcham Community Center on the North Central Missouri College campus in Trenton, with a total of 78 teams representing 45 Missouri high schools and Waukee Northwest in Iowa. Games will begin on Saturday, December 16, and wrap up on Friday, December 29. The 9-day event will include some first-time schools to the NCMC campus during the holiday break, “We are excited to have new schools joining us for the 2023 Holiday Hoops,” commented committee
member Mitch Dougan. “Having good matchups is something we pride ourselves on, and the addition of these new schools helps ensure good match-ups. We thank the schools for getting their contracts in early and being great to work with.” For the first time in Holiday Hoops history, Crest Ridge, Harrisonville, and Kipp KC Legacy will take to the NCMC court in December. In addition, games will once again be livestreamed at www.piratesdigitalmedia.com. “Live streaming all games brings the Holiday Hoops experience to those who are unable to make it to campus, and we are excited to have Pirates Digital Media back,” shares committee member Nate Gamet. “Viewers will notice a new gym floor to go along
with the new bleachers and paint that was added a couple years ago.” Holiday Hoops continues to be one of the state's largest high school holiday basketball events, with all games played on the NCMC campus in Trenton. Volunteers assist the 15member committee in managing the event, which will host 48 varsity basketball games. The mission of this event is to expand exposure of North Central Missouri College, its campus, and facilities by offering a quality, competitive basketball environment where students and teams can showcase their skills during winter break. BRIEFS Downtown Christmas
Five Points Alive will present Downtown Christmas on Friday, December 1 in Downtown Trenton. In addition to previously announced activities, Preceptor Nu will be selling hot chocolate as a fundraiser for the sorority. They will be set up and ready or customers at 4 p.m. at the south door of Howard’s Department Store.
Spickard BOA Meets
The Spickard Board of Alderman met on Monday, November 13 at 6 p.m. in Spickard City Hall. Mayor Alan Tharp called the meeting to order at 6:09 p.m. The first order of business was approval of the agenda for the November 13 meeting and the minutes from the october 9 meeting. Each passed unanimously. In old business, it was decided a date will be set for a phone meeting with John Nilges with Byrne & Jones for LSLI. It was decided to pay all September bills. The next Spickard Board of Aldermen meeting is set for Monday, December 11, 2023.
Lunch with Law Enforcement
The Trenton Police Department has announced that the next “Lunch with Law Enforcement” program will be held on Tuesday, November 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the North 65 Center located at 2901 Hoover Drive. This is an opportunity for citizens in the community to introduce themselves and talk with members of the Trenton Police Department. You are encouraged to attend, ask questions about the Department, Special Programs, or Law Enforcement in general. Any business or organization wishing to host “Lunch with Law Enforcement” or any other “meet and greet” event is encouraged to contact the Police Department at 660-359-2121.
Area Boards Set Filing Dates, Hear Lead Study Reports The Pleasant View RVI, Spickard R-II, Grundy R-V, Laredo R-VII, Princeton R-V and Gallatin R-V school boards met recently. Items on agendas included the setting of filing dates for board vacancies in the April 2024 election, improvement updates and lead testing results. Pleasant View R-VI The Pleasant View R-VI Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, November 14 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Board members present were President Damien Little, Vice President Ben Thomas, Treasurer Jack Bethards and members Jennifer Belvel, Laurie Frisbie and Tim Miller. Derek McCauslin was absent. Superintendent, Rebecca Steinhoff, was also present. Consent items, including the agenda, minutes from the last meeting, financial statement and bills, were all approved. Title teacher Kaley Wil-
liams gave an update on the Pleasant View Literacy Plan. The board voted to approve the plan. Kindergarten teacher Adriane Todd gave an update on the school year. In old business, it was mentioned that all doors have been updated to a new key. There were some water issues with new doors, but they have since been resealed. The school is currently waiting on trim work to be done around the cafeteria door to replace existing walls that are deteriorating. Results from the initial lead test were reviewed with two locations being retested on Thursday, November 16. In the meantime, signage has been placed indicating water is not to be used for drinking. Under new business, the board reviewed a rough draft of the 2022-2023 audit, with no action taken. Bids were opened for the drainage work that is to
be done north and east of the building. The board tabled their decision to seek further clarification of the bids. The board voted to approve MUSIC as the school's insurance company for the 2024 calendar year at a total cost of $29,136. This is an increase of approximately 20 percent due to an increase in claims across the state. Superintendent Steinhoff reported that the Pleasant View R-VI School District will be accepting filings for candidacy for the April 2, 2024 election. Vacancies to be filled are two 3 year terms (Jack Bethards and Jennifer Belvel) and one 1 year term (Derek McCauslin) on the Board of Education.
