NCMC Dorris Rider Art Gallery Featuring “Photography by Tim Reynolds”

A collection of photography by a former Trenton resident continues the 2022-2023 exhibition schedule in the Dorris Rider Art Gallery at North Central Missouri College in Trenton. “Photography by Tim Reynolds” is now open and runs through Saturday, May 20.

Reynolds grew up in Trenton and graduated in 1979. His father, Rev. Don Reynolds, was the pastor at Tenth Street Baptist Church in the 1970s and 1980s. Tim later served for nearly seven years in the US Air Force and now resides in Kansas City.

“I had the opportunity to travel while I was stationed in Germany,” Reynolds said. “I was hooked! I haven’t stopped traveling since.” After his retirement from the FAA as an air traffic controller, Reynolds delved deeper into his hobby of photography.

“I picked up and put down photography many times over the years,” he said. “But when I retired in 2017, I bought a real camera and decided to really learn to take pictures. And I'm still learning.”

The lower level of the gallery includes photos taken in the United States, while the upstairs features images from

all over the world. “People may recognize the places in the photos, but maybe see them in a way they have not before,” he said. “My hope is that the photos will spark a memory, provoke a contemplative thought, or send folks on a journey of their own.”

All of the artworks in the exhibit are for sale. It is requested that any hanging artwork is left in the gallery until the show closes, but prints in the display rack can be taken at the time of purchase.

The show will close on Saturday, May 20 with a reception for the artist from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

For more information, please contact Jim Norris at 357-6345 or by email at jnorris@mail.ncmissouri.edu. The Rider Art Gallery is located in the Frey Administrative Center on the NCMC campus. Regular hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as selected weekend and evening hours by appointment.

We need strong leaders

Leadership is not for the faint of heart, especially in this day and time. In the age of “wokeness” and cancel culture, you have to have a backbone of steel and nerves to match to survive the meat-grinder that is public service.

When I was young, I thought about politics as a career. I am certainly glad I chose a different path.

I grew up watching politicians like Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, Newt Gingerich and Bill Clinton. While I didn’t always favor everything Clinton did, I liked the way he was decisive and knew when he was outnumbered and needed to come to the center to gather support.

As much as some people like to hate on Trump, he knew how to read a room and be two steps ahead. He knew how to cut to the chase and get things done. He wasn’t afraid of criticism if he truly felt he was right and he judged what was right by what his constituents elected him to do.

Too many politicians have lost sight of how a representative democracy works and go rogue once they hit city, state or federal halls of power.

Now, advance from the glory days of politics in the 80’s and 90’s to the excrement sandwich we have now.

Gone are the days of Ronald Reagan and Tip O’neil, now we have Alexandria Ocassio Cortex and Maxine Waters. Joe Biden and Mitch McConnell don’t strike me as that sharp, savvy or driven by what is in the best interest of the American people.

I am ready for a new generation of leaders to supplant the old guard and take control of this rudderless ship in the wake of Trump’s “loss” in 2020.

Editor’s Note: I put loss in quotations just to get under the skin of the left. You gotta get your kicks where you can…

I could at least respect Obama for the fact he was really trying to push the leftist agenda. While absolutely a disaster for the country, Obama was committed and worked hard for his constituents.I am not sure Joe Biden knows what wing of the White House he is in most days, much less what his constituents elected him to do.

This week we saw dangerous inaction as a Chinese spy balloon floated over US military installations gathering intelligence while Biden did nothing. Trump, Bush and Reagan would have eliminated the threat as soon as it crossed into American airspace, guaranteed.

Biden obviously was more worried about escalating tensions between the US and China than protecting our military intelligence. He does not understand that adversaries like to probe our defenses looking for weaknesses. When we fail to react to threats it lets our enemies know they can push further the next time without a reaction.

Biden eventually bowed to public pressure but not until we let Xi’s balloon float all the way across the country and exit over South Carolina. When they had been able to transmit all their intel, we finally shot it down over the Atlantic.

Weak.

Biden has shown weakness in regards to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Granted, as a non-Nato country, our response cannot be as strong but we waited entirely too long before sending missile systems and tanks to show support.

Russia has exhibited that their military is not as strong as we once thought. By not rolling through a much weaker country, Russia has shown that when you strip away the nuclear threat, they are a paper-tiger, err…bear, at best.

The best way to quickly spotlight that weakness was to speed weapons and aid to the scrappy Ukrainians but we sort of frittered that advantage away through inaction.

Leadership is not easy and frankly some people are not up to the challenge. We need to demand strong leaders. We need to support them when the woke or cancel culture come calling.

Whether it is nationally, in our state or locally, we need strong leaders.

Liberty Thought of the Week

Are students better off with a 4 day school week than 5 days? Results so far indicate mostly yes with a few concerns.

About one fourth of Missouri school districts have now made the transition to a 4 day week. The trend started in small rural schools. Lathrop Missouri, a small town in NW Missouri was first in our state to switch in 2010.

Andrew Palmer taught Middle School English at Lathrop that first year of 2010 and continued through 2015. He came to Lathrop from one of the largest school districts in the state; “From an educator’s perspective, the thing I loved the most about having students only four days of the week, was I finally had a fifth day to work on grading papers and improving instruction. When you teach middle school and high school, there are always numerous papers to grade. With a standard five day week, all that additional work that happens after the students leave the classroom usually happens in the evenings, late at night, or even on a weekend day. It makes for less stressed, and more productive teachers.”

The Independence School Board voted in December 2022 to move to a four-day week beginning Fall 2023. Independence will be the largest Missouri school district, with 14000 students, on the 4 day plan.

"In Missouri, there's over 140 districts that have done this and only one has gone back," said Independence Superintendent Dr Dale Herl. "You look in Colorado, nearly 70% of school districts have gone to four-day weeks."

(KCTV)

"It has helped us retain our staff," said Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith of Warren County Missouri. "We've had good feedback from staff and academics have

stayed pretty consistent." (KCTV)

Less is More. One of the benefits for students is the time per class is a little longer. They can cover more depth on a subject.

Cindy O’Laughlin, Missouri Senate Majority Floor Leader, was the chair of the senate education committee from 2020 to 2022. She visited more than 30 schools during that time and sees a bigger problem; “The public school system is so overwhelmed with requirements from both the feds and the state Department of Elementary and Secondary education that teachers are fed up and leaving in droves. I will always believe good teachers have a heart for their work and bureaucrats have managed to destroy their initiative and joy in teaching. It’s not the salary causing people to leave teaching; it’s the culture of the classroom.”

One of the unexpected benefits of a 4 day school week for students is the opportunity to spend more time with extended family. The 5th day can be a rotating day with grandparents, a parent, with day trips to Missouri’s many parks, museums and events. Families can plan 3 day weekend events. Our job as parents and grandparents is to teach our children life skills. This extra day would be a good time to do just that.

Alec Alvarez, a third grader at a suburban Denver elementary school, said he felt the new day was "kind of long" but that it was "worth it" so he could spend his Mondays at his grandmother's house "playing outside." (NBC) For high school students exploring career opportunities, the unplanned 5th day is an opportunity to job shadow or intern to try out jobs they have an interest in.

One downside is that a single parent with no close family or support system struggles with finding and affording childcare for the extra day each week.

In today’s hectic world, finding balance is important. 4 days at school and 3 days of family time is a better balanced life for our children.

The month of January has flown by and now we are onto February. I pray as we get through the winter months, that my friends and family know how valuable they are to me and to others. There has been a new website launched to help prevent suicide among service members, Veterans, and their families. Veterans, service members, and their families now have a website they can access that is designed to help reduce the rate of suicide

m. Launched by the Missouri Governor’s Challenge Team to Prevent Suicide among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families, the site provides general information on the team’s projects and strategic priorities, the impact suicide is having on the military community, and resources for both members of the military community and for anyone wishing to support them. Linda Overton Presents at Rotary Meeting

Linda Overton presented the program at the Thursday, Feb. 2 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room. Michael Ormsby presided at the business meeting, Dan Wilford gave the prayer and Martha Groegel was the sergeant at arms and program chairman.

Mrs. Overton discussed the Missouri Department of Conservation's Wires Over Wildlife program, a partnership between the state's electric cooperative and their customers to improve native plants and habitat where powerlines pass through electric company easements and providing a valuable opportunity to improve conservation in Missouri. Mrs. Overton and her husband, the late Bob Overton, have been involved in various conservation practices for years and became involved in the WOW program as a way to continue their efforts in that area. She had contacted Scott Roy of the MDC about establishing a pollinator habitat on the family farm and was then told about the WOW program by Grundy Electric Cooperative manager Scott Wilson. The Overtons became the first persons in the state to participate in the program and their efforts were featured in the state cooperative's magazine. Mrs. Overton noted financial assistance is available to help with establishing the habitat area.

During this week in the legislature, I got to visit with teachers from around District 2 and see my friends at the Grundy Electric Cooperative. I always enjoy when I get to see my constituents here at the capitol! The House approved HJR 43 by a vote of 108-50. HJR 43 would raise the threshold to 60 percent voter approval for passage of Constitutional Amendments. Proponents also say the increased threshold will help minimize the influence of out-ofstate groups that have no ties to Missouri but spend millions of dollars to change the state constitution. Supporters of the measure say it will protect what they view as a sacred document that should only be amended when absolutely necessary. They point out the current version of the Missouri Constitution has changed more than 60 times since it was written in 1945. In comparison, the United States Constitution has been amended only 17 times since 1791. The measure now moves to

To A Degree

My name is Kristi Cutsinger, Program Coordinator of Health Sciences at North Central Missouri College (NCMC). Are you aware of the career opportunities that NCMC offers in the healthcare field? I would love to provide you with information regarding our health science programs; whether you want to expand your skills and qualifications or start a completely new career path, NCMC is the place for you!

During the business meeting, President Michael Ormsby presented Mrs. Overton with a Paul Harris Fellow certificate and pin. Her husband was a long-time member of the Trenton Rotary Club.

The program at the Feb. 9 meeting will be presented by Scott Sharp with the North Central Missouri Development Alliance. The meeting will be at noon at the BTC Bank community room.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 13%, adding about 2 million new jobs. In addition to new jobs, opportunities arise from the need to replace workers who leave permanently. About 1.9 million openings each year, on average, are projected to come from growth and replacement needs”

NCMC offers the following health science associate degree programs: Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant, Fire Science, Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Paramedic, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology. We also have Certificates for Pharmacy Technician and Medical Coding & Billing. NCMC will be adding another associate degree program for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in Fall 2023.

Most of the programs require a combination of online and in-class requirements along with mandatory labs and clinical rotations at healthcare facilities. Some of the programs require a student to travel 2-3 days each semester to another campus, along with some located at our new Savannah campus. Depending on the program, it may allow flexibility for working adults to complete their degree.

If you would like to find out more about these health science opportunities, I would be glad to schedule an appointment with you to discuss any questions you may have. You may contact me at 660-357-6284 or by email

Let NCMC help you achieve your educational/career goals!

Modine Manufacturing

Modine Manufacturing Company is a global company employing more than 11,000 employees worldwide in 16 different countries. Founded in 1916 in Wisconsin, Modine established a facility in Trenton in November 1968. Modine products serve several different end users through two main business segments: Climate Solutions and Performance Technologies. Modine Trenton sits in the Performance Technologies segment, manufacturing air-cooled thermal management components and systems that help keep engines cool and running efficiently. These air-cooled applications can be used in heavy-duty, commercial, or specialty vehicles like farm and mining equipment, semi trucks, buses, or delivery vans.

Modine Trenton employs 200 people, on average, and donates money and time to different charities and organizations through the community when possible. In addition, several employees serve in the community and on various boards, such as the Chamber of Commerce.

Kimberly Mengel, Plant Controller, said, “I truly enjoy the people I work with, along with having the opportunity to work for a

global company in my hometown.”

In 2019, Modine Trenton was named Trenton Large Business of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce, and in 2018 and 2019, it was named Navistar Diamond Supplier of the Year (Navistar is one of Modine Trenton’s top customers). Modine Trenton seeks to be a top employer of choice in the region and to continue its involvement in the community.

Modine’s company purpose is Engineering a Cleaner, Healthier World™. Their products do this by helping to improve air quality, reduce water and energy consumption, lower harmful emissions, enable cleaner running vehicles, and use environmentally friendly refrigerants. At the Trenton facility, Modine has evolved with the market and the times by transforming from a copper/brass product to an aluminumbased product. How a product is made has also evolved over the last several years. The use of robotics and newer, more updated technology has improved many processes.

Kimberly went on to say, “We see a lot of potential for our products and are excited for the future.”

Sticking around

COVID-19 vaccine sales could plunge 60% this year for Pfizer and Moderna but Wall Street still expects billions in revenue from both shots over the next several years

Thank the wily nature of COVID-19. Scientists expect the virus behind the pandemic to stick around as it mutates to avoid our defenses In January U.S. regulators and a panel of advisers began hashing out a plan that would clear the way for annual COVID-19 shots, similar to how new flu shots are authorized every year. pandemic’s first two full years Don’t expect those eye-popping numbers to return. Sales will plunge as demand for an initial round of shots slips and the vaccine makers lose a huge customer: The U.S. government will stop buying their shots this year.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has told investors that 2023 will be a transition year before things begin to stabilize But then analysts think the vaccines still could pull in $7 billion or more each annually through 2026 — which would make them top sellers for most drugmakers
