Roof Plan
DESCRIPTION Overview Inspired by the shape of water in endless motion, Denmark’s new National Aquarium, The Blue Planet, is shaped as a great whirlpool, and the building itself tells the story of what awaits inside. The whirlpool concept originates in a narrative about water, and as an image, is at once both abstract and figurative. It stirs attention with its distinctive vortex blades, but at the same time, as a building, changes dramatically depending on viewing angle, distance and daylight conditions. From the air, almost entirely white, its contours are reminiscent of a starfish. From the front, the building’s organic lines are evocative of silvery-grey waves or a vast sea creature, and on closer inspection, the facade patterning is reminiscent of fish scales. This is a building that invites interpretation. Flexibility Blue Planet is located on an elevated headland towards the sea, north of Kastrup Harbor. The building's distinctive shape is clearly visible for travelers arriving by plane to the nearby Copenhagen Airport. The facade is covered with more than 33,000 small diamond-shaped aluminum shingles, which adapts to the building's organic form. The whirlpool concept was chosen as ideal not only for its visual associations, but also because it resolved a practical challenge in the design brief: it ensures that one or more of the whirlpool arms, with relative ease and without disrupting the building’s integrity nor the operation of the aquarium, can be extended with more than 30 % in order to create more exhibition space.

The Arrival and Interior Visitors reach the entrance by following the first and longest of the whirlpool’s arms, already starting in the landscape. With a smooth transition, the landscape surpasses for the building, while the outdoor ponds mark the unique experience that awaits the aquarium visitors as they enter: the whirlpool has pulled them into another world—a world beneath the surface of the sea. The interiors range from grand to intimate settings, allowing the architecture and the exhibits to jointly convey an array of diverse environments and moods. The curved ceilings of the aquarium are reminiscent of the baleens of a large whale. The exhibition is a total concept offering all visitors a sensuous and captivating experience of life in and under the water. A mixture of light, sound, advanced AV-technology, projections, film, interactivity, graphics, illustrations and signs aimed at all age levels ensures that every visitor, regardless of background or interests, has the best experience possible. As the only aquarium in Denmark, The Blue Planet focuses on all aquatic life – from cold and warm waters, fresh and salt. In total, The Blue Planet contains app. 7 million liters of water and 53 aquariums and displays.

Construction and Location The building extends beyond the original coastline, placing special requirements on the facility's structures in a terrain with tendency to subsidence. The structure is founded on piles and all of the sewage structures are suspended in the concrete structure. The building's architectural facade design forms the basis for the design of the steel structures. The load-bearing system consists of 54 unique steel frames, which via their radial positioning and geometry forms the base of the curved facades.
A service line was built 1.7 km out into the Øresund to obtain suitable water for the aquariums. Moreover, the cooling system for aquariums and climate system for public areas also use seawater. The Blue Planet has an outstanding location on the shores of Øresund, only eight kilometres from the Copenhagen City Hall Square. Motorways, Copenhagen Airport, the Øresund Bridge, Metro and international trains are within few hundred metres.

Sketch
DESCRIPTION Overview It is extremely rare that an architect gets the chance to bring a creation of his to life a second time. After only 11 years, the Portello exhibition complex – which I worked on between 1993 and 1997 – was in danger of ending up as industrial archaeology. But it was not to be. Thanks to a complex operation of ‘architectural surgery’, it is already destined to play a leading role in Milano Expo 2015. The first stage – to be completed by 2010 – will be the construction of a large Congress Centre in the southernmost building. This structure– overlooking the site where City Life with its already renowned skyscrapers is going to be built it is first off the blocks and issues a renewed challenge. Eventually, the entire complex will express all of its original potential as a great bustling bridge: 800 metres of urban pergola coinciding with the ‘green ray’ which will connect the city centre with the Expo area, and, more closely, the green oasis of City Life with the new 'Portello Nord' area already under construction. But what form does this renewed challenge actually take? A graft of metal and glass bodies – three tapering foyers on different levels with spectacular 180 degree views over city life – will give a radical twist and conclude the old building head which has remained incomplete until now. A great square volume bulges outward and violates the existing roof, while an unexpected asteroid-auditorium floats beside it on a crown of preexisting columns. A real earthquake in volumetric terms which required and generated the synthesis which resolves all: the invention of a silvery airy comet which surmounts and embraces the new building head together with part of the flanks and roof of the building, transforming it into a rare new creature, yet remaining coherent with the overall complex. It will be an unmistakable landmark, conceived as a swarm of luminescent rays rippling from the denser nucleus of the bulkhead and forming a 200 metre long tail. A comet, in fact, has destined to become a symbol and engage in dialogue with City Life on equal terms, because its horizontal extension competes with the height of the skyscrapers.

The “Comet ”: Details and Materials The Comet is the fruit of lengthy research by Mario Bellini Architect(s) starting with the figurative idea and realized with the innovative assembly of materials which can easily be obtained on the market. It is designed to comprise a total of 8,000 metres of luminescent rays (up to 200 metres long) which will ripple out from a denser nucleus to form a tail. - Each ray is composed of 4 ribbons side by side, pre-formed sections of ultrathin microperforated aluminium, anodised silver (making the entire structure even lighter and semitransparent). - Each ray is supported by lightweight three-dimensional reticular steel structures along the centre of which run 8,000 metres of channelled lighting (in microprism finish extruded transparent polycarbonate tubes) produced by low energy LED lights (only 1 Watt per metre). - Along each section, it is possible to insert a photovoltaic panel (composed of thin layers of amorphous silicon), light sensitive even in the absence of sunshine, as is often the case in Milan. Each metre can generate 25 Watts.

In theory, if the entire Comet was covered with photovoltaic panels in this way, 800,000 Watts could be generated. But in order to light up the Comet, at zero cost, it will be sufficient to install 400 metres of photovoltaic panels. All of these materials can be recycled.

Complete renovation of the historic building of the Stedelijk Museum (A.W. Weissman, completed 1895) has been brought it up to be the best current museum standards and convert virtually all program spaces into galleries for the renowned permanent collection.
Construction of an adjoining new building (two stories above grade, one below) has been underway to house galleries for temporary exhibitions, visitor services, public amenities, library and offices.
Relocation of the main entrance onto the great public lawn of Amsterdam’s Museum-plein (Museum Plaza) has successfully creatde an active, common ground for the first time among the Stedelijk Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Concertgebouw.

位置
The Stedelijk Museum is located in Amsterdam’s Old South district in the Museum Quarter, near the intersection of Paulus Potterstraat (where the 1895 building had its main entrance) and Van Baerlestraat.
Exterior Form
The Stedelijk’s new building appears from the outside to be an entirely smooth white volume, oblong in shape and canted upward at one end, which is supported on white columns. Already known by some in Amsterdam by the nickname “the bathtub”, this floating form, which spreads outward at the top into a broad, flat roof, is actually the envelope for the second-floor galleries, auditorium and offices above. It is entirely encased in glass at the transparent ground-floor level, which houses the main entrance and lobby, museum shop and restaurant.
Roof and Outdoor Plaza The roof of the new building matches the height of the original building’s cornice line. The roof’s overhang creates a sheltered outdoor plaza at ground level, where programmed activities can be staged and where visitors will be protected from the elements. Façade Material

The smooth white surface of the facade is made up of 271 panels of a pioneering new composite material with Twaron® fiber as its key ingredient. The panels are attached to the steel structure by 1,100 aluminum brackets. Twaron, a synthetic fiber, is extremely lightweight (27 kilograms per square metre, or less than half the weight of a normal curtain wall), is five times as strong as steel, maintains its shape and strength in varying weather conditions and does not melt in fire. Because the composite with carbon fiber and Twaron can be molded, it permits the creation of a smooth, seamless surface of virtually any area. Twaron is ordinarily used for the hulls of motorboats and racing yachts, sailcloth, aerospace and industrial components and sports equipment such as tennis rackets and hockey sticks. At the Stedelijk, it is being used for the first time for a large-scale architectural facade.

SKIN FEATURES After plastering and sanding the facade, it was painted with a white glossy finish identical to the gleaming hull of a luxury yacht. To prevent visible stripes, the entire 100 metres-by-15 metres façade was painted in one go, by using paint sprayers on three levels, which drove in perfect synch with each other in front of the whole facade.
MATERIAL An important part of the architects’ vision was that the sur face of the facade should be seamless. Such a large area would need to be made out of a number of smaller panels. Therefore, the 100 metres long white smooth volume is made from fiber enforced composite, since this composite offers a minimal thermal expansion, making a seamless facade possible.
