Step I: Concept

PROBLEM: FRAGMENTATION HAPPENS IN OUR CITY IN THE CURRENT SITUATION,THE CITY IS,BLOCK BY BLOCK, BEING CHANGED INTO ANOTHER,BUT THE WAY IT DEVELOPS ALSO GIVES BIRTH TO A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS UNEXPECTED, WE NOTICED THAT AN OLD BLOCK HAS BEEN CHANGED INTO A BRAND NEW BLOCK,MANY FUNCTIONS HAS BEEN PUT TOGETHER BRUTALLY,JUST IN ORDER TO EXPLOIT EVERY PENNY OF THE GROUND.FRAGMENTATION IS ONE OF THOSE PROBLEMS PROCUCED FROM THIS WAY OF CITY-DEVELOPING WHICH IS GETTING SERIOUS NOW.

PHENOMENON: THE CURRENT WAY OF DEVELOPMENT CAUSES FRAGMENTATION IN SPACE EITHER IN HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL.IT LEADS TO THE SEPARATION OF GLOBAL AND LOCAL BUT ONLY A LITTLE SPACE IS KEPT FOR LOCAL IN THIS URBANIZATION ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS CLOSE TO A COMMERCIAL STREET LIKE NORTH SICHUAN ROAD.

THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT AROUND OUR SITE,STARTED WITH THE PARK

LET’S GO BACK TO 2000 TO SEE WHAT WAS THERE,TURNS OUT IT’S JUST AN ORDINARY CORNER OF THE CITY.

TWO YEARS LATER,THE PARK HAS BEEN BUILT.

AFTER THAT,CHANGES HAPPENED TO AREAS THAT CLOSE TO THE PARK.

GLOBAL WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NOW.

NEW BUIDINGS ARE PENETRATING INTO BLOCKS.

THINGS CONTINUES...

LOCAL

THE ROOTS OF FRAGMENTATION DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS BEING PUT TOGETHER IN SUCH A BRUTAL WAY,WHICH SEPARATE THE GLOBAL AND LOCAL,BUT AT THE SAME TIME RUINED THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR BOTH PEOPLE FROM LOCAL AND GLOBAL TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.THE BOUNDARY OFTEN A BARRIER,OR JUST A WALL.

THE DEVELOPERS DON’T PAY ENOUGH ATTENTION TO THE LOCAL PEOPLE.

AN OLD APARTMENG STANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF NEW ONES LONELY.

THE WHOLE BLOCK IS REMOVEDFROM THE CITY.

BRUTAL CONNECTION OF COMMERCE AND RESIDENCE.

ALTHOUGH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS HAS BEEN ORGANIZED IN A NEW SYSTEM,BUT ACTUALLY THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH COMMUNICATIONS WITH OTHERS.

NEW BUILDINGS OLD BUILDINGS

TYPE A DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS MIXED HORIZONTALLY

TYPE B DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS MIXED VERTICALLY

TWO TYPES OF MIXED FUNCTION IN TRADITION WAY,IN ORDER TO KEEP THE PRIVACY OF LOCAL PEOPLE,THE DEVELOPERS SACRIFICED THE OPPORTUNTIES OF LOCAL PEOPLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH GUESTs FROM ALL OVER THE CITY.

WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE? MUTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES AND MIXED USED SPACES PUT IN A WHOLE BLOCK.

HORIZONTALLY

GLOBAL LOCAL

TRADITIONALLY: DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS IN DIFFERERNT BLOCKS.LACK OF COMMUNICATION.

NOW WE WANT: DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS IN THE SAME BLOCK. FULL OF ENERGY.

ESTABLISH A MORE SUITABLE PROPORTION OF LOCAL AND GLOBAL.

VERTICALLY

TRADITIONALLY

NOW WE WANT

TO PUT SUCH A LOT OF FUNCTIONS INTO A SINGLE BLOCK,WE NEED TO KNOW FIRST WHAT IS NEEDED HERE,AND WHAT FUNCTIONS CAN BE PUT TOGETHER,AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO FIND SOMETHING TO CONNECT THEM SOMEHOW,TO PREVENT THE CITY FROM FRAGMENTATION.

STRATEGY: TRANSITION TO MAKE IT WORK AS A WHOLE, WE NEED TO FIND SOME SPECIAL FUNCTIONS WORKING AS A BELT BETWEEN OTHER TWO DIFFERERNT FUNCTIONS. THIS BELT CAN BE USED BY BOTH SIDES OF THESE TWO FUNCTIONS, AND IT WILL ALSO KEEP THE PRIVACY OF LOCAL PEOPLE FROM NOISES COMING FROM OUTSIDE. SO WE ARE CREATING A SYSTEM WITH TRANSITIONAL SPACES CONNECTING OTHER FUNCTIONS AND FORM A COMMUNITY FULL OF ENERGY.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO COMBINE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS WITH TRANSITIONAL SPACES.

FUNCTIONS WHATEVER IT IS SPECIAL FUNCTIONS WORKING AS TRANSITIONAL SPACE

DIFFERENT LEVELS OF COMBINATION IN A CITY

AROUD THE SITE, WE THINK THERE ARE THREE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS—THE NORTH SICHUAN ROAD,WHITCH IS A BUSY COMMERCIAL STREET AS WE MENTIONED BEFORE, THE SIPING-WUSONG ROAD, AND A PARK. THESE THREE ELEMENTS TOGETHER LEADS A VERY CLEAR DEFINITION TO THE SITE, AND ALSO CREAT BOTH ADVANTAGES AND DIS-ADVANTAGES TO OUR SITE.

SUMMARY The area offers extensive connec on (cars and public), large number of customers and big poten al of visibility, as well as direct connec on to large park.

SUMMARY At the moment, there is very li le of value in the area itslef. On the Siping side it is also threatened by unfriendly public space, oriented towards fast car traffic. The area is endangered by massive high-rise development, which generally produce braque public space, while it has to keep high FAR (see below).
