was unprecedented in its successes and rewards, but also came with significant challenges. The successes were great. They include hiring exceptional new staff and new teachers, increasing program revenue by 34%, increasing performances by 62% and increasing contributed income to operations by 67%. We also received $580,000 in grant funding from Hopkinton’s Community Preservation fund and the Mass Cultural Council to renovate the farmhouse into a ceramic studio and additional music studios that will support our private lesson program. The renovation of the farmhouse proved to be significantly challenging. When we embarked on the long renovation process which included necessary updates and repairs at the start of 2020, who could have predicted that a global pandemic lay in our path and would not only delay the project but also add significant cost? COVID-19 presented challenges on all fronts, with the ripple effects still being felt today. Renovation projects under the best of circumstances are costly and disruptive to day-to-day operations. Opening walls in a structure built in the 1800s only adds to the complexity of a renovation, along with the unanticipated COVID-related supply delays and surging labor and materials costs, the building itself needed a great deal of additional structural support to ensure it was safe and would continue to serve us for generations to come. All of these factors led to renovation expenses that were almost twice that of the original proposal. In a year where the HCA was climbing

back from a shutdown, the additional expense of the renovation put a strain on our finances and bandwidth and is the reason we saw a deficit. HCA also faced operational challenges due to the much-needed implementation of a new database and inability to resume programs such as private lessons, our adult chorus, and indoor musical performances for three quarters of the year. To mitigate those challenges we focused on fundraising. 2022 marked the second year of our annual Celebrity Spotlight On The Arts fundraiser, replacing the traditional gala event that we’ve held in years past. We were delighted to host the legendary singer and songwriter, Judy Collins. It was certainly a momentous occasion to have Judy Collins right here in Hopkinton. HCA was proud to partner with Catherine Cote to present a unique theatrical experience called Project Empathy. Project Empathy is a performance-based project in which people are tasked with telling each other’s true, personal stories.
For six to eight weeks, the cast engaged in empathy exercises, reflective writing, and perspective-taking to build trust and understanding. The connective experience culminates in a performance of stories for an audience. It was a moving experience for both the participants and the audience. 2022 also brought us a variety of support through various grant and charitable programs. Through a very generous grant from the Rossner Family Foundation, the HCA successfully launched a program with Hopkinton, Holliston, and Westborough special education programs to provide art, music and dance instruction to adults with special needs between the ages of 18–22. In October, we took our “Wicked 5k” race and turned into a full weekend of Halloween happenings! The HCA expanded this fundraiser to include a wildly popular Haunted Trail, family-friendly Monster Mash, Scarecrow making contest and partnership with both the Hopkinton Cultural Council and Hopkinton Community Partnership offering a pumpkin carving contest and a community trunk or treat event. We were pleased to deepen our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts through two dynamic art exhibitions in The Lotvin Family Gallery. HCA welcomed Jamaal Eversley and his studentcurated show based on the Bold and Beautiful Exhibition for adults. We also welcomed Flor Delgado, who was the selected curator-in-residence for 2022. She gathered a diverse group of artists to provide a compelling exhibition around the immigrant experience. Despite the challenges we faced in 2022, ultimately it was a year of magic. A feeling that the worst of COVID was finally behind us and an artful future lay ahead. We thank you all for bringing the magic to the HCA.

Feature Story: Terry Farmhouse Renovate it and they will come. HCA was pleased to re-open the Terry farmhouse for our ceramics program and private lesson programs in early 2022. Not only is the structure much safer, but it also got a much-needed facelift to make the environment warm and inviting to all who enter it.

Almost every inch of the building is new. New roof, doors, windows, walls, insulation, plumbing and heating system. We were however able to refinish the beautiful old wood floors and create three new music studios on the second floor and one large ceramic studio on the first floor. The town of Hopkinton granted the HCA $400K in CPC funds as well as funds to build a handicapped ramp. We also received $180K from the Mass Cultural Council. The space officially opened for classes in September 2022.
The renovation also provided the opportunity for donors to name the music rooms. One such generous donation came from Patrick and Amanda Faucher, with additional naming of rooms to come in 2023. Such naming opportunities are part of the work that is being done to pay down the capital expenses associated with this project. We now have five music rooms available for naming.
The completion of renovations on the farmhouse feels very much like a full circle moment. The farmhouse is “where it all started” in 1997 with the Cultural Arts vision of an inclusive art center championed by Dora Garabedian. The building is now safer, more efficient, and more beautiful than ever. We are all grateful for your continued support and that you consider the HCA your home.

JANUARY Matilda, The Musical Enter Stage Left Theater, HCA’s community theater, produced their biggest production of Matilda Jr.
FEBRUARY Soupah Bowl HCA’s held a Soupah Bowl featuring work from adult students to support the renovations costs of the farmhouse.
MARCH Boston Globe Exposit The Lotvin Family Gallery collaborated with the Boston Globe to display a retrospective of the Boston Marathon over the years.

HCA was awarded several grants in 2022. The Hopkinton Cultural Council awarded $1,000 towards the production of Project Empathy. Surrounding towns’ Cultural Council’ support our Summer Music Series including Holliston ($1,000), Upton ($1,000), Ashland ($500), Milford ($500), and Southborough ($400). The Roessner Family Foundation granted the HCA $20,000 to pilot our program for developmentally delayed students aged 18–22 from Hopkinton, Holliston, and Westborough public schools. Aegon Transamerica Foundation awarded the HCA a $4,500 grant to support neurodivergent school aged children taking our classes. The Foundation for MetroWest granted the HCA $10,000 in unrestricted general operating funds. The HCA also received a $5,000 grant from the MetroWest Visitors Bureau to support our marketing of the Summer Arts Series. HCA was the receipient of two separate grants from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism. The first was a $27,000 COVID Recovery grant to be used for marketing the HCA, especially reaching communities outside our usual geographic area. The second was a Destination Development Capital Grant for $30,084 to expand and enhance our Shakespeare Garden and outdoor space. 10 2022 HCA GRATITUDE REPORT
