CEO MESSAGE

VALUABLE ASSETS

In 2022, we hosted two successful Owners’ Rendezvous in The Bahamas, which gathered nearly 25 yachts and hundreds of guests to celebrate the Horizon yacht lifestyle. Presently, our Australian team is preparing to host an Owners’ event of its own in November. The scale of our global events has expanded year-on-year and it makes me happy to see our clients so involved with the Horizon family. In my opinion, our loyal customers are our biggest assets, and I’m so proud of that.

The year also had its share of challenges and uncertainties, but through this, our customers maintained their confidence in Horizon. Boat shows and Rendezvous around the world continue to be tremendously successful and I’m truly grateful for the new and repeat clients who choose Horizon as their yacht builder.

Recently, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan attracted global attention, but despite the resulting flare up of political tensions, the situation allowed the world to more clearly understand who we are. Although the citizens of China and Taiwan share the same skin color, similar language and even the same ancestors, we have very different values. The Taiwanese have lived in a democratic environment for more than 70 years, and it is a style of living that defines us and will continue to do so.

I often wonder why—despite extremely cheap labor and land cost—a non-democratic country has not become an industry leader in yacht building. I think the biggest reason is not a lack of technical innovations or finance, but rather the attitude and outlook of the country and its people. From my 40+ years of yacht building experience, I know that a successful yacht builder must be passionate about the

product, understand the customer’s lifestyle, respect the owner’s requests, and possess the best software and hardware to coordinate a very detailed build process. This is the only way to produce excellent products.

Horizon Yachts is a company thriving in the free land called Taiwan. Every Horizon employee learns to respect their profession, respect their colleagues and pursue perfection—the same values that are important to our clients. It is because of these valuable assets that I am confident the Horizon Group will last for generations to come, and will continuously improve upon its excellent service and build quality with each passing year.

Founded in 1987, Horizon Yachts has celebrated 35 years as one of the largest luxury yacht builders in the world as well as the number one builder in the Asia Pacific region. During these three decades, Horizon has delivered over 870 luxury yachts, with more than 230 of these over 80 feet in length. Popular models ranging from 52 to 150 feet include motor yachts, superyachts, power catamarans, expedition yachts, and fast displacement motor yachts.

New Launches

Seven new Horizon builds representing the E, FD and CC Series have launched in recent weeks, as demand for the Horizon brand continues to grow worldwide.

Skyline Hull Seven

Upon her launch, this FD80 Skyline was shipped to Australia for her world debut at the 2022 Sydney International Boat Show, where she was quickly sold to an experienced Australian client. Configured with a split-use skylounge, this is the very first FD80 to feature an open galley on the main deck.

Within the four-stateroom layout, the interior spaces of this FD80 boast a contemporary yet cozy ambience, with satin water-bleached walnut and dyed Koto as the main woods and brushed dark bronze metallic inlays as accents. The open galley is highlighted by a large island wrapped in Les Origines de Rex white stonework. Thoughtful details are featured throughout, such as the integrated, slide-out step stool in the cabinetry. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet to starboard offers a wine cooler on its lower half and liquor and glassware storage on its upper half.

Forward, the full-beam master stateroom is bathed in natural light from the large windows as well as a skylight above the king-sized bed. Three additional staterooms are situated on the lower deck, comprised of forward and port VIPs and a convertible twin to starboard. A washer/dryer unit is housed in the foyer. Quarters for four crew complete with a washer/dryer and crew mess are situated aft of the engine room and access the beach club and swim platform.

On the uppermost deck, a wheelhouse with three helm chairs is enclosed, while the split-use skylounge features dining and lounging, a bar with three bar stools and a teppanyaki grill, and a large Jacuzzi spa tub with a bar counter and additional bar stools. Additional space for tender storage is found furthest aft.

FD80 Skyline Hull Eight

This voluminous new FD80 features a four-stateroom layout with an on-deck master, an enclosed skylounge, expansive deck spaces and a beach club plus crew quarters. This is the first FD80 model in the U.S. to feature an open galley design, which further adds to the feeling of spaciousness onboard. She is also the first FD80 to be fitted with Caterpillar 1,600bhp engines and the Garmin Surround View six-camera “Birdseye” system. Horizon’s proprietary High Performance Piercing Bow and hull design affords superior comfort and stability for an enjoyable cruising experience.

Fully opening glass partitions create an indoor/outdoor feel between the aft deck and the main salon, which features a spacious lounging area and dayhead aft, and a

convertible dining table forward. White ash flooring and white oak finishes with walnut highlights enhance the open and airy ambiance. This particular design offers an open galley configuration, creating a truly open-plan feel on the main deck. A large center island with three stools and a modern overhead light fixture serves as a focalpoint, and full-size refrigerator/freezers provide excellent storage to the well-equipped space.

The master stateroom comprises the forwardmost section of the main deck, while two VIPs and a convertible twin are situated on the lower deck. This FD80 offers crew quarters for four and a crew mess, which also conveniently services the beach club aft.

On the upper deck, the pilothouse features an L-shaped lounging area and a dayhead, while the boat deck is fitted with freestanding furniture, a wet bar and BBQ area that can be shaded by an awning. Another trend pioneered by Horizon, the FD80 foredeck offers an additional inviting entertaining area, with a U-shaped settee and dinettes, and a large sunpad that also can be shaded by awnings.

The new FD80 will be on display at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. See page 76 for more details. For more information on this FD80, please contact Horizon Yacht USA at +1 561 721 4850 or sales@horizonyachtusa.com.

This FD90 is an exciting new launch for the Australian market, in that it has been built to meet the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) new 2C Survey requirements for commercially-operated vessels. The classification affords the FD90 the flexibility of operating either as a private or a charter vessel—an option that is particularly appealing to Australia’s active boating market.

FD90 Skyline Hull 25

The new FD90 offers a five-stateroom layout with a split-use skylounge and a beach garage with a hydraulic swim platform. Highlighted by water-bleached walnut and dyed Koto, the main salon is set off by an exquisite oak wood flooring in a herringbone pattern. A spacious seating area with a wine cabinet and dayhead is positioned aft, with the dining area and galley with a privacy screen and full-height storage amidships.

Situated furthest forward on the main deck, the full-beam master stateroom features a his-and-hers ensuite. Four queen-sized VIP staterooms are situated on the lower deck and include mirrored staterooms amidships, another to port and the fourth in the bow. Spacious crew quarters and a beach garage are found aft of the engine room.

Featuring a Skyline configuration, the new FD90 has been designed with an enclosed wheelhouse area with a dayhead and three helm chairs. The seating area in this space converts to a bed when needed. The split-use skylounge features a large lounge area with Hi/Lo tables opposite a bar with three fixed barstools, while a Jacuzzi tub with a bar counter, a grill area and an outdoor handshower are found aft. A fold-down radar arch provides ease of navigation while another entertainment space is found on the foredeck bow area, which can be shaded by a sun awning.

FD90 boasts plentiful dining and lounging areas on the upper deck to suit the owners' preferences.

The spacious main salon is designed in the traditional configuration, with a large lounging area to port and a dayhead aft to starboard. A convertible dining table accommodating up to ten is positioned forward and easily serviced by the galley, which the owners opted to have remain open to the dining area. The master stateroom is situated furthest forward, with plentiful closet space and built-in loungers in the windows to either side. Four further staterooms comprised of two mirrored VIPS, a twin with Pullman bunk to port and a convertible twin in the bow are specified for the lower deck, with crew quarters for up to four and a beach garage aft of the engine room.

The upper deck showcases the extent of amenities that can be incorporated into this voluminous, sub-100ft model. Here the owners requested a large seating and lounging area on the boat deck with a circular dining table for eight just aft of the enclosed skylounge. The skylounge itself features an L-shaped sofa with a pull-out bed opposite the dayhead and owners’ desk area. A large Jacuzzi tub takes up the space just forward of the wheelhouse and is surrounded by sunpads opposite additional lounging.

The owners plan to cruise Florida, The Bahamas and Mexico after taking delivery.

Sold to a repeat Horizon client who was drawn to the larger tri-deck FD concept introduced at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the first of this model boasts a five-stateroom layout with an enclosed skylounge, open upper deck, beach club and ample accommodations for up to ten guests.

The high-volume layout of the Cor D. Rover-designed FD Series and the increased interior and exterior space was a plus for the client, who purchased the boat while it was in build but added customizations of his own, including a full-height wine cooler in the galley and a cigar humidor in the main salon.

simplistic in its design so as to not distract from the exterior surroundings, the interior features high-quality natural materials such as linens, natural stone and teak, while European oak wall paneling and flooring throughout enhance the neutral backdrop.

Another factor that drew the owner to the tri-deck design is the amount of outdoor lounging/entertaining space. These areas include a spacious boat deck equipped with a Jacuzzi tub and bar, the foredeck area fitted with an icemaker, refrigerator and loungers and the flybridge, fitted with a large sunpad and L-shaped seating and coffee table.

E75 Skylounge

This is the fourth Horizon yacht and the second E75 build for an experienced Australian owner, who specified a three-stateroom layout with an expansive full-beam master suite amidships and two large VIP staterooms on the lower deck. A large salon and country kitchen galley with a stunning center island occupy the main deck, while the enclosed skylounge on the upper deck comprises the wheelhouse and lounge/entertainment area.

A bar with fixed barstools augments the entertaining space on the boat deck aft, while another seating and lounging area has been configured for the foredeck.

Upon taking delivery of his latest Horizon, the owner plans to join other Horizon owners in the Whitsunday Islands for the Owners’ Rendezvous in November, after which he will helm the boat from Australia’s Gold Coast to its new home port of Auckland, New Zealand, where the owner plans to spend much of his time onboard fishing.

Build

While Horizon Yachts is known for its diverse series of highly customizable semi-production models, many experienced owners also turn to the yard to build their fully custom dream yachts. Such is the case with the latest Horizon Custom Collection (CC) 103. This is the fourth Horizon yacht to be built for an experienced Australian owner, who requested specific – and somewhat challenging – details drawn from the best aspects of his previous vessels, including accommodations for a helicopter as well as a submarine.

An adventurous yachtsman who enjoys cruising to remote locations, the owner—having previously owned a CC80, an E84 and an E88—requested that his new yacht feature an exterior style similar to the Horizon E Series yachts. He also liked the interior space and natural light afforded by the FD Series and approached the yard with a request for a combination of both. Thus, the new CC103 boasts a unique exterior profile, with expansive windows and a spacious interior housing five large staterooms and numerous innovations within a 23' 5" beam.

Now offering yacht charters as part of its curated service, Yacht Connexion has access to the global charter fleet of yachts worldwide and can assist with booking a yacht charter vacation on the yacht and destination of your choosing.

Horizon owners and interested clients, however, have the unique opportunity to charter select Horizon yachts that are offered exclusively to clients interested in purchasing or building their own Horizon.

Through the Horizon client charter program, Yacht Connexion can arrange for a truly unique Horizon experience, whether it’s snorkeling in The Bahamas with the FD87 Aqua Life, relaxing with a clambake and beach bonfire in New England with the FD92 Freedom, or experiencing the local culture of the Fiji Islands with the RP97 Encore

Yacht Connexion also takes the offerings for current Horizon owners one step further with a unique “partner” program that allows Horizon owners to swap their boats, much like a home share.

“We have U.S. owners who wish to cruise in the Med or the Great Barrier Reef, for example,” says Horizon Yacht USA Director Roger Sowerbutts, “and rather than take their boats, we can partner owners from Europe to cruise in the U.S. or Australia and vice versa. We have had owners speaking with other owners across the world about boat sharing and boat-to-property sharing. This connects our owners with experiences and destinations around the world they are interested in while also helping to establish our global owner relationships.”

Like a soldier familiar with his post, the FD102 Askari towers above the dock with a quiet yet imposing presence that conveys certainty and strength. The high-volume design of this Fast Displacement (FD) Series yacht is magnificent to behold up close. Burly yet balanced, what began as the design of a tri-deck FD92 evolved into the FD102 to accommodate the owners' request for plentiful deck areas. While the yacht features a traditional layout on the main deck, with an expansive aft deck, a salon highlighted by full-height windows, and a formal dining area and galley forward, it is anything but traditional in its styling. Gold Coast-based interior design firm PLK Design is responsible for the contemporary interior, with company owner Pete personally selecting the finishes and outfitting accessories. Australian furniture maker Jardan supplied much of the interior furniture, from the dining table and chairs to the tub chairs in the salon, and the owner selected beautiful Cambria stonework as an upgrade throughout. The use of Australian brands continues in the lighting, with Soktas Hand Blown Glass Lighting providing the main ceiling feature light in the salon as well as the wall lamps in the full-beam master stateroom on the main deck forward.

Charcoal in Snow

The first FD model with an open galley configuration, this FD80 features a stunning interior design that references an ancient Chinese proverb.

24 feature yacht: FD80 Skyline
FEATURE YACHT

There is a popular Chinese idiom that roughly translates to “Send Charcoal During Snowy Weather,” which is believed to have had its origins during the Warring States period that preceded the Qin dynasty. It’s said that during a particularly harsh winter, the Monarch of the state of Chu ordered charcoal to be sent to all of the state’s inhabitants to help them stay warm. The act of generosity and empathy led to the idiom, which means to send material aid or emotional support during a time of need.

“Charcoal in snow” serves as the design inspiration of the new Horizon FD80, which has been purposefully crafted to provide an inviting atmosphere of contemporary elegance. Specified for the Australian market, this FD80 boasts a four-stateroom layout with an on-deck master suite, and is the first Fast Displacement (FD) Series model to feature an open galley configuration.

The charcoal in snow design inspiration creates a sophisticated atmosphere in the stunning main salon and open galley area.

Nestled between the entry-level FD75 and the larger FD90 models, the FD80 is known for its contemporary style lines, versatile use of space and well-planned interior and exterior areas. This FD80 Skyline offers all of the signature elements of the mid-size, high-volume model, such as expansive floor-to-ceiling sections of glass on the main deck, spacious accommodations, a fully equipped beach club and vast deck areas. The open galley design further enhances the significant feeling of spaciousness that the FD Series design affords.

Sliding doors from the aft deck—equipped with a dining table for eight and fold-down television—lead into the open main salon, which features a dayhead aft to port, a large L-shaped sofa and seating area opposite a 55” fold-down television and entertainment center, and a convertible breakfast bar/dining table forward on the starboard side. The interior spaces boast a contemporary yet cozy ambience, with satin water-bleached walnut and dyed Koto as the main woods and brushed dark bronze metallic inlays as accents.

Open to the main salon, the galley features a large island wrapped in Les Origines de Rex white stonework, which conveys the concept of snowflakes—a theme continued in the columns that separate the windows in the salon. The stone is echoed in the galley backsplash and countertops and mimicked in a feature wall painting that climbs alongside the staircase to the enclosed skylounge

Dressed in cornerstone Brazil jade walls, the master ensuite features dual integrated sinks, a shower, and a toilet area separated by a frosted glass partition.

Quarters for four crew complete with a washer/dryer and crew mess are situated aft of the engine room and access the beach club and swim platform.

The aforementioned deck areas of the FD80 are yet another aspect of this model’s key features. The foredeck area is a destination unto itself, complete with storage, awnings for shade and integrated speakers in the sunpad. On the uppermost deck, a wheelhouse with three helm chairs is enclosed, while the split-use skylounge extends aft to the boat deck for a complete al fresco entertaining experience. Four Hundred Nautical Miles at the Helm of the FD80

Selecting the ideal weather window would prove to be the biggest hurdle of the 400nm journey required to transport the new FD80 from the Horizon Yachts Australia (HYAUS) Gold Coast headquarters to Sydney’s Darling Harbour for her debut at the 2022 Sydney International Boat Show.

Ten days prior to the show opening, the crew of three — comprised of HYAUS Managing Director Mark Western, Service Manager Craig Maile, and Sales Manager Tony Jones — set out aboard the FD80 and headed south in the often unpredictable waters of the South Pacific. It would prove to be the perfect occasion to experience the stability and comfort afforded by the Cor D. Roverdesigned FD Series yacht and Horizon’s proprietary High Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB) and hull design.

“We had good weather for around two-thirds of the trip with light follow ing seas, light winds and a bit of swell,” says Mark Western. “But for the last 80 nautical miles, from Port Stephens on, we had 35 knot winds from the west-northwest, round to the southwest, a head-on sea and very messy conditions.”

The crew seized the opportunity to put the FD80’s piercing bow design to the test for the last leg of the voyage. This design, in conjunction with the FD Series’ hybrid hull shape and tunnel design, delivers a shallow draft, more comfortable ride, lower resistance and excellent stability. While alternative bow designs that feature protrusions work more efficiently at either high or slower speeds, the HPPB brings both efficiency at slower speeds and performance at higher speeds.

“The FD80 handled it beautifully,” says Mark. “The FD hull performs brilliantly in a head-on sea. The round bilge and high-performance piercing bow soften the ride. It’s such a fine entry. And there’s a lot more buoyancy further forward than a conventional monohull.”

“We were 40 miles offshore, in a short, confused, nasty sea, and the FD80 was a pleasure to drive. We went out wide from Stockton Bight and beelined it straight to Sydney in around 30 to 35 knot winds, traveling at around 15 knots to get into Sydney by the last Spit Bridge opening at 9:30pm.”

Impressively, the entire journey took the crew just 36 hours. Cruising at an average speed of 12.5 knots, the FD80 burned just 9.4 liters per nautical mile.

“The boat handled perfectly,” says Mark. “We are very satisfied with how the FD80 performed.”

The rising popularity of the FD Series in Australia is due to its compelling offering that combines space, performance and the ability for owners to customize their vessel to their own taste.

30 feature yacht: FD80 Skyline VOLUME 59 // 2022

THESE PAGES

Despite turbulent seas, the FD80 comfortably made her way from the HYAUS headquarters on the Gold Coast to Sydney's Darling Harbour in 36 hours, burning just 9.4 liters per nautical mile.

They have really struck a chord,” says Mark of the range that spans 75 to 125ft and has become the fastest growing yacht series in the world. “Once people see them at boat shows and on the water, they realize the FD Series is everything they’re looking for in a boat.”

Mark and his team at HYAUS have 12 FD Series yachts on schedule to deliver in 2022, which is equivalent to the sales in the United States.

“Production is now booked out until early 2023,” says Mark. “We have now sold three Horizons built to AMSA 2C Survey for commercial charter.”

“The appeal of the FD Series yacht is its incredible volume for length. These yachts offer huge deck space, from the aft deck to the foredeck, and then the flybridge has the enclosed pilothouse and massive entertainer’s deck with lounge, barbecue, bar, jacuzzi and sunpads. The beach club-garage is yet another leisure space that really defines the FD Series.

“Best of all, the FD80 and FD90 are under 24 meters, which is the key for crewing and securing a berth, and they offer the complete package when it comes to charter.”

Horizon’s E Series of motor yachts has long appealed to clients worldwide for its sleek profile and wellbalanced layout. While the builder’s rapidly expanding Fast Displacement (FD) Series of high-volume motor yachts has appeared to take center stage, other yacht series in Horizon’s diverse offering have continued their own growth and evolution. Such is the case of the brand new E90, which combines a performance-oriented hull with a

streamlined superstructure as the next-generation evolution of the E Series’ popular E88 model.

This first E90 motor yacht was in build as a spec boat for the American market when she was contracted by experienced American yacht owners, who appreciated her classic styling and well-planned four-stateroom layout. The yacht’s plentiful deck areas were particularly appealing to the clients, who enjoy cruising the Caribbean and Bahamas. →

Purchased just prior to her launch by experienced first-time Horizon owners, the first E90 motor yacht blends effortless styling with purposeful details.

The increased interior volume of the new E90 is evident from the dock—a feature made possible by the yacht’s enhanced hull design that affords a 21ft beam. Borrowing an extremely successful feature from the FD Series, this E90 is the first E Series yacht to be designed with the proprietary High Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB), a design proven to afford excellent seakeeping and stability.

Fitted with a fixed settee and a dining table, the E90’s aft deck features a wet bar to starboard, while to port, stairs lead to the enclosed wheelhouse and spacious boat deck above. Walkaround side decks to either side lead forward to the bow seating area, with crew quarter and engine room access both to port on the main deck and through the transom entrance on the swim platform.

Light white ash and silver oak woods and white quartz stonework enhance the bright and airy feel of the interior. The main salon features a seating area comprised of an L-shaped white leather sofa with storage, a freestanding leather armchair and an ottoman opposite an entertainment center housing the television and A/V equipment. A dayhead is conveniently positioned aft to starboard to service both the interior and exterior areas on this deck.

A Hi/Lo partition separates the country kitchen-style galley from the main salon and dining.

Storage has been thoughtfully considered throughout the main salon, with storage nooks found within the base of the dining table, sofa and ottoman, as well as within the cupboards that run along the starboard side. Forward to port, the dining area has been fitted with an expanding oval table for eight surrounded by white leather dining chairs.

Lazy Daze features an open country kitchen-style galley with a U-shaped dinette that occupies the forwardmost space beneath the yacht’s sloped windows. A Hi/Lo partition in the large pass-through window separates the fully-equipped galley from the dining area and salon for privacy when desired. Topped with white quartz, a center island offers even more storage in this space. To starboard, a floating staircase climbs to the enclosed wheelhouse, while another stairwell leads to the staterooms on the lower deck.

Getting back on “island time” was the theme of the 9th Horizon Yachts Owner Rendezvous, which kicked off with a bang this year in the Bahamas’ Abaco Islands from May 20-22nd and gathered Horizon yacht owners, families, and friends together with the Horizon Yacht USA (HY USA) team for the return of this highly anticipated event.

A favorite cruising area for many Horizon yachts and owners, the Abaco islands were the obvious destination for the three-day event, which drew ten Horizon yachts, 15 sets of Horizon yacht owners, and nearly 100 owners and guests to the island. In 2019, the Abacos were devastated by the Category 5 Hurricane Dorian, after which the COVID-19 pandemic hindered the recovery and rebuilding process, so the timing was right for the Horizon family to show its support of the resilient locals and these beautiful cruising grounds.

THESE PAGES Horizon yachts filled the marina and guests began mingling and reminiscing as the rendezvous kicked off.

Horizon yachts representing multiple build series and ranging in size from an E70 to an FD110 arrived at the Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour Marina where they greeted friends old and new and settled in. Among the many gestures of support from the HY USA team and owners, the yachts arrived with truckloads of pet food and supplies that were generously donated to the Abaco Shelter – the only pet shelter on the island. Many of the owners’ furry family members barked out their approval across the docks.

The Beach Party followed the christening of the new E90 Lazy Daze

The first day of the rendezvous opened with mimosas and brunch at the resort’s Below Deck Terrace, where Horizon Yacht USA Director Roger Sowerbutts gave a welcome speech and guests retrieved their rendezvous gift bags, filled to the brim with local goodies and items to use throughout the weekend’s festivities. After brunch, the group headed to the docks for the christening ceremony of the brand new E90, Lazy Daze. This was the first Horizon build for the experienced owners, who were attracted to the model’s exterior styling and plentiful amenities, and they made fast friends with other Horizon owners after the champagne toast! Read the full feature on the E90 Lazy Daze on page 32.

The afternoon drew everyone to the Beach Party at the resort for a Bahamian classic Goombay Smash and beachside fresh conch salad. Guests swam, lounged on the beach and enjoyed beach golf and games while catching up and sharing their cruising stories.

The first night culminated in dinner and dancing at the resort's Below Deck Terrace.

The six-piece band “Suppa Time” set the festive tone for the cocktail hour and dinner at the Below Deck Terrace, where guests dined on baked lobster tail, fresh fish piccata and New York strip carving before hitting the dance floor. In what became an evening tradition, the first FD87, Skyline hosted an after-party with line dancing under the disco lights on the aft deck.

On Day Two of the rendezvous, attendees met at the ferry dock for coffee before heading to the remote outpost of Elbow Cay to hop on golf carts and explore the picturesque streets and pastel-colored homes of Hope Town. After exploring the restaurants, art galleries and boutiques, everyone met at Tahiti Beach to partake in a refreshing afternoon cocktail and take in the view. This tropical paradise was the perfect setting to wade in the crystal-clear water and order a whimsical drink, like the Almond Joy Colada or the Green Banana, from the famous Thirsty Cuda floating cocktail bar.

After a fun-filled day, guests returned to the resort to freshen up and gather for the Farewell Bahamian Bash on the beach; the group reminisced about the weekend and reveled in one last evening together. By the light of the fire pit, guest and crew danced to the “Suppa Time” band, and the evening commenced with an exciting Junkanoo performance, with all attendees joining in on the fun!

Day Three was a day for excursions and guests set out early for the activity of their choosing. Some ventured to see the famous swimming pigs at No Name Cay and partook in more fresh dockside conch salad while feeding the pigs. A few adorable piglets made for snuggly photo ops, and the lunch and band at Big O’s were a hit, especially with Aqua Life’s group who played musical chairs with the band. Many of the guests enjoyed an impromptu cruise aboard Skyline for lunch at the famous Nipper’s Beach Bar & Grill on Great Guana Cay and a few others elected to join longtime Abaco resident and artist Anthony “Big Mo” Morely for an intimate sip and paint experience at the resort.

It was blowing a gale the day the Horizon PowerCats navigated “The Devil’s Backbone” and arrived on North Eleuthera, but, once comfortably nestled into their slips at the Romora Bay Resort and Marina on Harbour Island, the 13 beautiful catamarans in attendance paid no notice, their owners and guests immediately taking to the docks to mix and mingle with friends old and new.

After a three-year hiatus, the 2022 Horizon Power Catamarans (HPC) Owners’ Rendezvous unofficially kicked off on the Wednesday evening with the celebratory christening of a brand new PC65, Hideout. Attendees gathered on the dock for a champagne toast to the owners, who had moved up from their Horizon PC60 to this new build, for which they specified a Sea Torque Boss shaft system and VEEM propellers to achieve a top-end speed of 27.4 knots on their new yacht. Guests enjoyed the signature fresh stone crab, champagne and Taiwan beer during the christening and continued the merriment with a shared potluck dinner on the dock well into the evening.

The first official day of the HPC Owners’ Rendezvous dawned bright and beautiful as the catamarans were cleaned and prepared for their Rendezvous appearance. The Horizon PowerCat team spent this time greeting each boat and checking on any service or maintenance needs—one of the many examples of the attention to service and detail that distinguishes the HPC brand from its competition. In the afternoon, the Romora Bay Resort extended a gracious welcome to the Horizon attendees with a steel drum band and Bahamian conch fritters washed down with tropical Goombay Smashes at the dockmaster’s office. Well rested and ready to celebrate, the guests donned their tropical attire for the opening cocktail party and Welcome Dinner on the resort’s terrace, for which The Powercat Company founder and CEO Richard Ford set the tone for fun with his pre-dinner welcome speech. Sponsored by AssuredPartners, the evening continued long after dessert with live music and dancing.

The seriousness of the occasion was palpable early on Day Two, as owners and guests bustled about the docks carrying bags and boxes, and scurried to and from their golf carts huddled in whispered conversations. It was the day of the Pimp My Golf Cart Contest and worldwide recognition as well as bragging rights for at least twelve months were on the line.

Led by Spencer Lloyd of AssuredPartners, the team of judges carefully critiqued each golf cart entry, paying particular attention to the award-winning characteristics of uniqueness, fun and creativity. Creativity, fun and uniqueness were indeed the words of the day as each cart—decked out in full regalia—lined up for a fast and furious scavenger hunt around the island. The raucous parade—ranging from astronauts to aliens, lifeguards to lobsters, mermaids to dinosaurs, and pimps to parrotheads—created quite a stir as each cart and its colorful occupants rampaged through Dunmore Town completing tasks and competitions in as civilized a manner possible. Back at the resort, the frivolity continued late into the afternoon with an impromptu pool party, before the guests retired to their yachts for a much quieter evening.

Laughter echoed off the docks early on the morning of Day Three, as owners gathered on their neighbor’s aft deck to sip coffee and recount stories of the previous day before tending to the preparations for the raft-up and beach barbecue. Despite the blue skies and brilliant sunshine, the aforementioned winds had forced a change of venue for the last two days of the Rendezvous. The disruption in itinerary, however, was not met with much disappointment as the revised venue was just as spectacular as the original. By mid-morning, each catamaran left its slip and cruised the few miles to the beach at Man Island.

Here the spectacular orchestration of the annual raft-up was on full display and managed by the Horizon Power Catamaran team with excellent precision, as Richard Ford greeted and boarded each PowerCat as it arrived and seamlessly helmed it into position while the crew set the anchor and adjusted the fenders. Within just one hour, all thirteen yachts were beautifully lined up and the guests tendered ashore for an afternoon barbecue of burgers, South African sausages, and plenty of beer, rose and champagne for all. After lunch, it was time for the cocktail competition for which three self-proclaimed experts in the field visited every yacht for a formal presentation and tasting of that yacht’s signature cocktail. Music and conversation continued as guests mingled from yacht to yacht and savored the waning sunshine before each PowerCat broke away from the raft up and set anchor for the night. That evening, a brilliant beach bonfire inspired dancing under the blanket of stars into the wee hours.

58 horizon life VOLUME 59 // 2 022

The sun rose quietly on Day Four and the peacefulness of waking in a beautiful anchorage inspired a morning swim followed by a hearty breakfast. Guests took to the water on this day, some participating in the official fishing tournament and others spending the day swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing before heading back to their berth at Romora Bay. Once the day’s catch was recorded, everyone relaxed before gathering on the resort’s terrace for wine and cocktails and a slideshow of photos and videos captured during the previous days. The highly anticipated awards ceremony prefaced the dinner with the Horizon PC52 My Best Life, taking home both the largest and the heaviest fish trophiesas well as the Most Unique golf cart award for its Jurassic Park-themed cart. The PC65 Cell Fish won the Most Creative category for its Under the Sea-themed golf cart and the PC60 Brokedown Palace won the Funniest golf cart award for its Pimp Palace-themed cart. As for the cocktail competition, the now sobered judges presented the two cocktail awards—both of which coincidentally were margaritas—to the PC60 Vitality for Taste and to the PC60 Mangata for Presentation. The PC52 Cut and Run won the Scavenger Hunt and after dinner nobody, including the HPC team itself, was spared from the blooper-recognizing “C’mon Man” awards!

“The 2022 Horizon Power Catamarans Owners’ Rendezvous brought together a group of fantastic owners for five days of fun, relaxation and enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures, which is what being a Horizon PowerCat owner is all about,” says The Power Catamaran Company CEO Richard Ford. “Despite the weather forcing us to abandon our original plans to cruise the Devil’s Backbone and spend the last two days in Spanish Wells, all of our owners and guests were content to relax and enjoy each other’s company no matter where they were. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting this amazing event for our owners and their guests and look forward to next year!”

MEET ANGUS

Angus is a flat-coated retriever who has been boating since he was eight weeks old. He first got his paws wet aboard a PC52 before his owners moved up to a PC60 and then into a brand new PC60, Quintessence. With nine years of boating experience, Angus says his favorite parts of the day are relaxing on the aft deck settee after his morning dockwalk and assisting with docking and em-”barking” operations.

Dogs of the Rendezvous

MEET BIGS

Though small in stature, Bigs has a commanding presence and takes his role of Captain of the Aft Deck aboard the PC60 Mangata most ferociously. Bigs enjoys running on the beach and if his hoomans happen to cross paths with a large, monstrous and most certainly poisonous creature, Bigs will be the first on the scene to assess and defend.

MEET LILY MUFFIN

The second canine resident aboard the PC60 Brokedown Palace, Lily Muffin has a dark and storied past that is best left at sea, she says. Nobody knows how old she is, but this Lhaso Apso decided to leave the "bark" side behind and joined the yacht two years ago. A bit set in her ways, Lily Muffin isn’t quite as seasoned at sea as her bunkmate Tuffly, but she does find joy in running up the steps to the flybridge and then demanding that the hoomans retrieve her and carry her back to the main deck. And when it’s time to go ashore, Lily Muffin commands the dock like it’s the Chanel catwalk in Paris.

MEET TUFFLY

Tuffly is a nine-year-old Labradoodle who has spent her whole life boating. Her name derived from the words “Fluffy” and “Tough”, Tuffly might look like she’s never broken a nail on her yacht but she’s as serious a boat dog as they come. She’s been spending the last few months in The Bahamas aboard her PC60, Brokedown Palace, and her favorite pastimes include dolphin and turtle spotting. When she’s not keeping watch on the dinghy ride or in her favorite lookout position on the top deck while her PowerCat is underway, Tuffly is relaxing on the aft deck enjoying a pawsitively good life.

MEET LOLA

Lola is a Mini Australian Labradoodle who took to the sea as a pup and never looked back. This eight-year-old sailor is happiest in the water, but her second favorite spot is curled up with her hoomans on the sofa in the main salon of her PC52, Passion. Lola is enthusiastic about docking and em-”barking” operations, and she patrols her yacht with the seriousness of a seasoned Captain. Lola is a real salty dog who is simply enjoying the yacht life.

The FD87 Aqua Life has become a popular charter yacht for the Bahamas. Here she is docked in the idyllic Compass Cay Marina.

62 horizon life VOLUME 59 // 2 022

Lou Lentine may have owned a few boats, including two other Horizon yachts, but his FD87 Aqua Life provides a respite from the demands of his many businesses. Aboard Aqua Life, he and his wife Kelli can sail away to make cherished memories with family and friends. It’s a life on the water that they enjoy sharing with others through an exclusive charter program.

Q: Tell us about your boating background

A. I have been boating since I was born; my family was in the marine industry and owned a boat marina and dealerships in New Jersey and Florida. My whole family has a love for boating—in fact my brother sits on the board of the National Marine Manufacturers Association and was recently honored with the 2022 Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award.

Q: What led you to the FD Series?

A. In 2015, I vividly recall being docked in the marina at Resorts World Bimini aboard our 58-footer. My wife was busy making breakfast for everyone. Next to us was a large yacht with a crew member serving the guests on the aft deck. ‘That is how I envisioned boating to be!’ she said. We decided then and there that we would prefer to vacation—more than work—aboard our boats.

When I first saw the FD series, I loved the amount of space, the multiple entertainment areas, and the on-deck master. The on-deck master was a must and was the biggest selling point for me. At that time it was very difficult to find a yacht in this size range with an on-deck master. My guests love the size of the cabins; each offers its own five-star experience. I have been on hundreds of yachts, and I can truly say that I don’t think any other compares.

63horizon life DEFINE YOUR HORIZON

RIGHT Aqua Life was one of the first boats to bring a doctor and urgently-needed supplies to the Abacos islands after Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

Q: How was your experience with Horizon?

A. Being my third Horizon, I have gotten to know both the U.S. and Taiwan teams. I have visited the shipyard on several occasions and have been very impressed with their quality of work. I do a lot of business in Asia and have visited other shipyards, but I have always been impressed with Horizon’s processes and procedures. I believe John Lu and his team are honest and fair, with great knowledge in the industry. They listen to the owners’ feedback and suggestions and respond by creating yachts that work well for owners and captains.

From the yard to the Horizon Yacht USA team in Florida, the level of service has been unmatched, and we truly enjoy working with them. When I recently had a change in my captain, they helped with the transition and brought the new captain up to speed, quickly and professionally. If I ever have an issue they address it promptly.

Q: What are your favorite features of Aqua Life?

A. I love to hang out on the aft deck, while my wife loves the bow seating area where she can enjoy a glass a wine accompanied by an amazing sunset. In the morning we move the furniture around on the boat deck and it becomes a great place to work out. In the evening, the aft deck is great for cocktails before dinner, and then we will move the furniture again on the boat deck for dancing and karaoke. When we first saw the beach club, I thought we would never use it. I was wrong — it’s yet another great place to entertain during the day with our floats out, or at night.

Aqua Life is designed for entertaining, and we do our share, both with family and good friends. With three boys aged 17-22, we sometimes need space from them and their friends while on board. This boat has plenty of it. It is amazing how many different entertaining areas you can have on one yacht.

64 horizon life VOLUME 59 // 2 022

Q: What are your favorite cruising areas?

A. We love to cruise The Bahamas and Caribbean. The Abacos is our favorite area, we have a home there and we were very involved in the relief and supply efforts after Hurricane Dorian. We attended the Horizon Owners’ Rendezvous in May and had a lot of fun. We enjoy cruising the Caribbean but have not yet taken Aqua Life there yet as she has an active charter calendar in The Bahamas. We’ll definitely cruise the Caribbean this winter and we are discussing our plans for next year. Kelli is dreaming of a trip to Maine, while I prefer to take Aqua Life to the Med.

OWNER EXPERIENCE

In Australian slang, the expression “fair dinkum” is believed to have evolved from the colloquial Chinese words used to describe “real gold.” While the exact origins of this phrase are unclear, it is a uniquely Australian phrase that perfectly emphasizes the genuine excellence of something. Thus, when a new build Fast Displacement Horizon arrived on the continent, Horizon Yacht Australia Director Mark Western dubbed her “Fair Dinkum” as a playful reference to the FD acronym, and the name stuck.

Shane and Liz Leadbetter were enjoying their Horizon E75, Justified, when the FD80 Fair Dinkum came on the market in 2021, and they were quick to snap it up. “You could say it’s our dream boat,” says Liz.

Dedicated water lovers, the Leadbetters—together with their children, Emily and Jake, and their dachshunds, Roger and Daisy—have owned many boats over the years, from 20-footers up to their current FD80. They were first attracted to Horizon and the popular E Series design for its value and well-appointed layout, and purchased the E75 Justified in 2017 at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in near-new condition.

They returned to the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in 2021 and were impressed with the high-volume interior and superyacht amenities of the FD80, which they purchased without making any alterations.

“Other than a few cushions and décor, we didn’t change a thing,” says Liz. “It was close to perfect for us. It has everything we wanted in terms of space for entertaining and hosting friends and family onboard in total comfort. In terms of security, it’s so well constructed we know we’re the best prepared we can be for long range cruising and voyages at night.”

The couple, who runs an investment business, enjoy nothing more than getting away from it all and finding solace at sea.

“We enjoy the opportunity to be on the ocean, in it, under it… anywhere at sea,” says Liz, adding, “and out of mobile range!

“Being surrounded by nature when we can’t see land is so peaceful,” she continues. “We dive and snorkel. Our children have their PADI licenses as well so it’s something we can do together as a family.”

Aboard Fair Dinkum, Liz and Shane have held many memorable theme nights to the delight of their fortunate friends.

“We’ve hosted Hawaiian nights and Mexican nights, complete with piñata and an authentic menu! It’s always a lot of fun.”

In 2021, the Leadbetters cruised from their Sunshine Coast home on the Mooloolah River to the Whitsundays, taking two weeks to explore the fascinating anchorages and islands along the way.

“Some highlights were Lady Musgrave Island, the Percy Islands near Mackay, and all the beautiful bays and inlets around the Whitsundays. We attended the Horizon Global Rendezvous in the Whitsundays in 2019, in 2020 at Hayman Island, and in 2021 at Chance Bay, Whitsunday Island. We had a ball!

“The best part of owning a Horizon is enjoying the company of other owners and becoming friends. Throughout the year, other owners pop into our place on the Sunshine Coast and tie up.”

This year, the Leadbetters are keen to enjoy as many journeys as possible on their sensational Horizon, including another sojourn in the Whitsundays, and are dreaming of adventures even further afield. Together, Shane and Liz are adept at handling their head-turning FD80 skyline, but if they are to extend their cruising ambitions, they plan to bring on crew with the expertise to navigate foreign waters.

“We would really like to cruise to Papua New Guinea and the Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia. We’ve been there on a commercial cruise and loved it. It’s so remote, so unspoilt, with absolutely pristine water and some of the world’s best dive sites.

“That’s our dream and it’s entirely possible to do it in our Horizon.”

Horizon is, for the Leadbetters, the “pinnacle” of semi-custom builders. As for their aspiration to move up to a new model, Liz says nothing is set in stone, but Shane is “always full of surprises! Whenever we go to the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show we come back with a bigger boat,” she laughs.

Until then, we wish Shane, Liz and the entire Leadbetter family many more wonderful cruising memories aboard Fair Dinkum. We’ll be waiting to show you a new Horizon at the next Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in May 2023!

OWNER EXPERIENCE

Aurora The Explorer

With 50 years of boating experience under their belts, Marian and Robin Wade have no plans to slow down anytime soon, especially when aboard their prized Horizon PC52, Aurora.

Offering plentiful interior space and access to shallow waters, multihulled yachts are a popular vessel of choice for many Australian boaters. Marian and Robin Wade are such owners. The couple has always preferred multihulls over monohulls, and has spent decades cruising, fishing and exploring the coast of Queensland from their home port of Hervey Bay.

When it came time to purchase a new vessel, the Wades canvassed the boat shows and the pre-owned Horizon PC52 stood out among the rest. “With three cabins including a spacious master stateroom and ensures for all of our family and friends, the PC52 suited our needs perfectly,” says Marian. “She is a very high quality build and is in impeccable condition.”

The Wades opted to keep the yacht’s original name, and Aurora became part of the family.

The Wades own multiple businesses, including a sawmill, cattle property, cane fields and various rental properties, but they will never turn down an opportunity to relax aboard their capable bluewater PowerCat.

“We both adore the water, and enjoy heading up the creeks and crabbing. It’s a great way to take a break from work. The stress just melts away.”

From Hervey Bay, Marian and Robin enjoy cruising close to shore and up to Fraser Island, fishing and simply soaking up the many benefits of the boating lifestyle.

Cooking on board is simple and pleasurable, according to Marian. “Nothing fancy, just barbecue the fish, boil the crabs in salt and pair it with a salad.”

And, while their cruising has been mostly local, they have acquired the expertise and confidence to handle offshore conditions.

In fact, Horizon Yacht Australia Director Mark Western joined the Wades aboard their PC52 as they traveled north to the Horizon Owners’ Luncheon in the Whitsunday Islands in 2021, and provided guidance and expertise that gave them the skills to comfortably navigate Australia’s sometimes unpredictable waters.

“We came back home on our own and it was quite choppy, but our boat is very stable and has great seakeeping ability, so we were totally at ease.”

70 horizon life VOLUME 59 // 2 022

Looking ahead, the Wades’ have plenty of explora tion planned aboard Aurora. Their cruising plans consist of visiting Lady Musgrave Island off the city of Bundaberg and witnessing the turtle season, as well as the reefs and diverse marine life this unique region is blessed with.

“This year, we are also hoping to spend a month in the Whitsundays and explore the islands,” Marian says.

Now that they’ve become part of the Horizon family, the Wades say they would thoroughly enjoy the experience of overseeing the construction of their own Horizon.

“It would be great to move up to a 60 or 65 and be involved in the build process at the Horizon factory.

“We’ve built houses over the years, and we’d love to work our ideas into our own Horizon. The Horizon Yacht Australia team is so helpful; Mark, Erica, Tony, Rachael and Craig—nothing is too much trouble for them. They would be there every step of the way.”

Happy Cruising, Marian and Robin! And, yes, when you’re ready for that new PC60 or perhaps a new PC68, Horizon will indeed be there to assist through the entire process!

2022 Sydney International Boat Show

Two FD80s were sold as a result of the show

After a two-year hiatus, the Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS) resumed with the 53rd edition of what has become the largest marine lifestyle event in the region. From July 28th through August 1st, the city of Sydney’s Darling Harbour transformed into a brilliant showcase of watersports equipment, boats, yachts and a full spectrum of marine-related gear. Commanding a prominent position at the Cockle Bay entrance of the SIBS Marina, the brand new Horizon FD80 was the star of the five-day show.

Launched in May 2022, the stunning Horizon FD80 is configured with a split-use skylounge and is the very first FD80 to feature an open galley on the main deck. Specified for the Australian market, this ground-breaking FD80 features a four-stateroom layout and a sophisticated interior designed to appeal to the Sydney yachting market.

Rapidly becoming one of the acclaimed high-volume FD Series’ most popular models, the FD80 Skyline offers expansive floor-to-ceiling sections of glass on the main deck, spacious accommodations, a fully equipped beach club and vast deck areas.

The open galley design further enhances the significant feeling of spaciousness that the FD Series design affords.

The interior spaces of the FD80 on display boast a contemporary yet cozy ambience, with satin waterbleached walnut and dyed Koto as the main woods with brushed dark bronze metallic inlays as accents. Horizon’s in-house design center created the “charcoal in snow”

mood, where modern, hi-tech materials — such as a backlit silver metallic wall feature — create accents reminiscent of a silver sky, clouds and snowflakes, and a floating lighting design mimics the warm glow from candles or a fireplace (See feature article on page 24.). It was this stand-out interior and well-designed layout that drew the attention of many show attendees. As a result, the yacht was sold during the show, with another client making a deposit on a new build FD80 that will be commercially classed for charter.

Alongside the FD80, Horizon Yachts Australia’s (HYAUS) diverse showcase included an E75 model as well. Boasting a three-stateroom layout, the E75 offers a spacious salon with a country kitchen forward, an enclosed skylounge and plentiful al fresco deck areas. Historically the most popular Horizon yacht model in the Australian market, the E75 features a sleek and streamlined profile, with a proven hull design that makes her an exceptionally seaworthy build for Australian waters.

In addition to fielding inquiries on the two models on display, HYAUS reports keen interest in the ingenious and seaworthy Jonathan Quinn Barnett-designed V68 model, as well as a new FD90 coming to the market soon. This exciting five-stateroom new build has been constructed to AMSA 2C Survey and features a BBQ and Jacuzzi on the boat deck.

“Selling two FD80 yachts as a result of this year’s show is yet another testament to the increasing popularity of this high-volume model in the Australian market, where there is a lot of interest in building boats to Survey,” says HYAUS Director Mark Western. “The FD Series yachts appeal to many clients for their incredible volume-to-length ratio. They offer huge deck spaces, from the aft deck to the foredeck to the flybridge with an enclosed pilothouse and massive entertainment deck with lounge, barbecue, bar, Jacuzzi and sunpads. Best of all, the FD80 and FD90 are under 24 meters, which is the key for crewing and securing a berth, and they offer the complete package when it comes to charter.”

Upcoming Boat Shows: A Trio of FDs to Debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

All eyes will be on the Horizon Yacht USA showcase during the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, held October 26th - 30th, where the new Tri-Deck FD110, a Tri-Deck FD100 and an FD80 Skyline will be on display.

Launched this summer, the first Tri-Deck FD110 is the largest build to date from the Cor D. Rover-designed Fast Displacement (FD) Series. The yacht will undoubtedly enjoy a commanding presence during the show, where the Series’ characteristic full-height windows running from bow to stern will be further amplified by its elongated exterior deck areas.

Entertainment and relaxation are the emphasis of the FD110’s design, and the five-stateroom yacht features a style throughout the main deck and on-deck master suite that emphasizes natural finishes, subtle coloring and clean, modern elements.

On the lower deck, four further ensuite staterooms comprise two mirrored VIPs amidships, a convertible twin to port and a third VIP in the bow. Crew quarters for up to six are situated furthest aft.

The wheelhouse and enclosed skylounge with dayhead are situated on the bridge deck, while the boat deck and uppermost decks are equipped for entertainment. The foredeck is fitted out with a spacious sunpad, seating and dinettes and a large Jacuzzi tub. Plentiful storage, a refrigerator and icemaker set up and removeable sunshades make this yet another compelling exterior lounge area.

Equally stunning in its presence during the show will be the first Tri-Deck FD100, a five-stateroom yacht boasting a contemporary interior styled by Miami-based Design Studio JAC. The interior features high-quality natural materials such as linens, natural stone and teak, while European oak wall paneling and flooring throughout enhance the neutral backdrop.

From the spacious boat deck equipped with a Jacuzzi tub and bar to the foredeck fitted with an icemaker, refrigerator and loungers, to the flybridge with a large sunpad and L-shaped seating and coffee table, this yacht is a must-see.

Configured with a four-stateroom layout that features an on-deck master, an enclosed skylounge, expansive deck spaces and a beach club plus crew quarters, the FD80 embodies the best of superyacht living in a mid-size package.

On the Horizon Power Catamaran stand, a brand new PC60, featuring the model’s evolved interior styling and extended flybridge with a dayhead, will be on display.
