X International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz

Group «HOROWITZ-DEBUT» (April 17 – 25, 2013) 1. COMPETITION CONDITIONS The Competition in Group «Horowitz-Debut» is opened to young pianists of all nationalities, born after April 17, 1999. The Competition in Group «Horowitz-Debut» is held in four separate groups. The contestant has the right to participate in one, two, three or four groups on condition of registration, casting of lots and fee payment in every group. To participate in the Competition it is necessary to send the following documents: enclosed Application form filled out by block letters with duration of each piece; copy of a birth certificate; two black and white (half-length) pictures, size 9x12 cm, to be sent preferably electronically, suitable for printing in a booklet, and taken since 2012; copies of documents confirming previous awards in competitions. Deadline for filling in online application forms on the competition’s website www.horowitzv.org or sending applications per post is 15 February, 2013 according to the postmark. Incomplete sets of documents and documents sent with a delay will not be considered. Administration doesn’t provide participants with a medical insurance. Having considered the received documents, the Administration determines the participants and sends them invitations by March 10, 2013. A List of competitors will be placed on the competition’s website of the Competition: www.horowitzv.org.

All participants, who have received invitations, must notify the Administration about the exact date and time of their arrival at the Competition by April 01, 2013. Foreign participants are responsible for getting their own passports and visas. Applicants should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine for advice. The Competition Fee is US $50 or the equivalent of the sum according to the exchange rate in the National Bank of Ukraine and is paid during registration. The registration and casting of lots of the contestants will be held from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. on April 17, 2013 at the Administration office: 31, Tolstogo str., Kyiv. All participants’ stay, as well as the stay of their accompanying persons during the Competition will be covered at their own expense. Rehearsals at the Competition’s Concert Hall are not provided.

2. THE JURY The Jury of the Competition works under «Regulations of the Jury». A list of jury members will be published on the Competition’s website by February 01, 2013. The Jury estimates participants’ performances by secret vote during all rounds. The Jury with consent of all members may interrupt a competitor’s performance if he or she overruns the allowed time. The Jury’s decisions at all stages of the Competition are final and cannot be discussed, revised or appealed.

3. REPERTORY REQUIREMENTS 1st Group «А» ELEMENTARY Program of the participant’s choice. Performance duration – 10 minutes. 2nd Group «В» ELEMENTARY Program of the participant’s choice with obligatory performance an Etude. Performance duration – 15 minutes. 3rd Group «С» ADVANCED Program of the participant’s choice with obligatory performance: – sonata (1st or 2nd-3rd parts) or variations; – virtuoso composition. Performance duration – 25 minutes. 4th Group «D» ADVANCED Performance of a part of concerto for piano with orchestra (accompanied by another piano).

Winners of this group must take part in the Closing Concert with the orchestra in Lysenko Column Hall of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine. The winners of the Competition in group «Horowitz-Debut» receive diplomas and gifts, and take part in the Closing Concert of the Competition. The Administration of the Competition has the right to engage the winners in concert activities during season 2013–2015. The Administration has an exclusive right to all audio and video records of Competition’s performances; they are the property of the International Charitable Fund of Vladimir Horowitz Competition. The Administration has an exclusive right to sign contracts with other parties with the aim to realize the above-mentioned materials. Competitors aren’t provided with the fees for the Competition’s materials used by the Administration.

ATTENTION! Program given in the Application form cannot be changed after March 15, 2013. In case of contradictions in the interpretation of these Conditions, the Ukrainian text is considered to be the only correct one.

«JUNIOR GROUP» (April 17 – 25, 2013) 1. COMPETITION CONDITIONS The Competition in the Junior Group is opened to young pianists of all nationalities, born between April 17, 1998 and April 17, 2004. Selection of participants is made on the basis of received documents by the Administration of the Competition. To participate in the Competition it is necessary to send the following documents: enclosed Application form filled out by block letters with duration of each piece; copy of a birth certificate or a passport; two black and white (half-length) pictures, size 9x12 cm, to be sent preferably electronically, suitable for printing in a booklet, and taken since 2012; copies of documents, confirming previous competitions’ awards. Deadline for filling in online application forms on the competition’s website www.horowitzv.org or sending applications per post is 15 February, 2013 according to the postmark. A list of competitors, who do not attend the Competition without adequate notice or reason, will be given to the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth for circulation among its members.

The Competition Fee is US $70 or the equivalent of the sum according to the exchange rate in the National Bank of Ukraine and is paid in cash during registration. The sequence of participants’ performances is determined by casting of lots and remains until the end of the Competition. The competition’s auditions are open to the public. Repertoire must be played from memory. Program of the Third Round is performed with accompaniment of the Symphony Orchestra. Prize-winners of the Competition are obligated to take part in the Closing Concert and accept the offered concert engagements which form an integral part of the prize. 2. ADMINISTRATION The Administration of the Competition provides free of charge with: accommodation and per diem expenses to competitors accepted to the 1st Round while he/she is taking part at the Competition; acoustic rehearsal (10min.) before the 1st Round and one rehearsal with the orchestra for participants of the 3rd Round in the Competition’s Concert Halls.

PRIZES 1st Prize – $3,000 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Gold Medal; 2nd Prize – $2,000 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Silver Medal; 3rd Prize – $1,500 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Bronze Medal; 4th Prize – $1,000 USA, the title of the prize winner; 5th Prize – $750 USA, the title of the prize winner; 6th Prize – $500 USA, the title of the prize winner. The Prizes are awarded according to the Jury’s decision. Depending on competitors’ achieved results and within limits of the established amount of prizes the Jury has the right to: – not to award all prizes; – divide awards (except for the first prize) among competitors. Sponsor Prizes and Encouragement Prizes are available. All Prizes are paid in Ukrainian national currency and are subject to income tax according to the current Ukrainian legislation. 5. REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS 1st Round 1. Bach. One Prelude and Fugue from Well-tempered Clavier. 2. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (of the participant’s choice). One Sonata in complete volume. 3. Clementi, Czerny (op.740), Moszkowski, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff (of the participant’s choice). One virtuoso etude. 4. A piece by Ukrainian composer. Performance duration is up to 25 minutes. 2nd Round 1. Obligatory work (look at Attachment №1 «List of obligatory works for the Second Round»). 2. One or more pieces by composers from Romantic period to modern times. Performance duration is from 25 to 30 minutes.

3rd Round First movement or second and third movements of a concerto. One-movementconcerto is performed in complete volume (look at Attachment №2 «List of works for the Third Round»).
