How exciting that it is finally here… Our 250th edition! Isn’t it gorgeous? In anticipation of this month’s magazine, I had the pleasure of chatting to so many of our supporters and valued advertisers – each of whom had some special memory or funny story to reminisce about from the days gone by. So many of these stories revolve around Jenny, HORSE TRADING’s founding matriarch, her insatiable zest and unstoppable passion when it came to securing the magazine’s success. (*You can read some of these memories and congratulatory messages in our special 250th edition feature on page 14 & 15) While the 250th edition reminds us to be grateful for how far we have come with your support during the almost-23 years that the magazine has been available, it also calls for transformation. Ever since HORSE TRADING was acquired by new management after Jenny’s passing, there have been promises of ‘big things’ for the future. What better time than now to announce that HORSE TRADING is expanding! The magazine will now be distributed to KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape…

Last dates for ad publication are PRINT DEADLINES WE ACCEPT ADS ALL DAY EVERY DAY!!! Ads will go onto the website & appear in the first available edition.

250 EDITIONS South Africa’s Most Loved Equestrian Magazine Celebrates

DURING THE PAST 22 YEARS, HORSE TRADING HAS FORGED FANTASTIC RELATIONSHIPS WITH SOME OF THE INDUSTRY’S MOST RESPECTED PLAYERS. SOME OF OUR VALUED ADVERTISERS SHARED THEIR MEMORIES AND EXPRESSED THEIR CONGRATULATIONS:

Congrats to Horse Trading on your upcoming 250th issue. I have been advertising with Horse Trading since its inception. Jenny played a part in advising me on Promix Supplements 15 years ago.

Equus would like to Congratulate Horse Trading on reaching their 250th edition. Equus is proud to be featured in your magazine. I’m sure Jenny would be proud.

Knowing Jenny she is still casting an eye over her mag and will no doubt be jinxing any staff or machine that does not treat her mag with the utmost respect, but have no doubt Jenny is well pleased with all.

Hannah Rousell Equus

Keep up the good work Horse Trading, many newbies will come & go, while Horse Trading will still be around! Lesley Delaney – CEO Promix Animal Supplements

Keep up the good work.

I still remember getting those “short” two-hour-long phone calls from Jenny, reminding us that it’s time for our monthly advert. Somehow she always managed to go the extra mile – often helping us to create our advert as well. Then she would rock up in her Ranchero V8 early the next morning to drop off the latest magazines, warning us that we’d better deliver the magazines quickly. ANB Vet are proud to have been involved with Horse Trading from the start.

Horseman’s Haven would like to congratulate Horse Trading on its 250th edition! You have come a long way from your stapled, black & white magazine to the glossy, colour printed publication you are today!

Arnold Botha ANB Vet

Wishing you continued success!

When it comes to Horse Trading, one of the things that stand out for me the most is the friendly and helpful service! Congrats on your 250th edition!

Milmac and Horse Trading magazine has had a wonderful relationship for the last 15 years and Horse Trading magazine to me is Jenny….. Caring, talented, loving, crazy Jenny. Miss you so much Jen. Horse Trading mag is your legacy and we honour it and you. Debbie Copeman - Executive Director Milmac Feeds

Jenny had an encyclopedic knowledge of the horsey world – people, fads, places, obscure bits of knowledge that glued a fascinating puzzle together. We loved getting her reminders about our adverts. She invented a whole vocabulary of special characters, and when she used them together with CAPITAL LETTERS YOU KNEW YOU WERE WAY PAST THE DEADLINE !!!! We miss her. When we think of her it is with fond and grateful thoughts. Cathy Khoury-Prinsloo - Manager & Member Groenvoer Quality Animal Feeds

Congratulations on your 250th edition of Horse Trading. It has been a pleasure to be associated with your publication. All the best for the next 250 editions, we look forward to see Horse Trading grow. V-Tech

From the days of Jenny being at the helm of Horse Trading, to now, with Mike doing it all…! You guys have always been awesome, always been supporters and we so look forward to many more years with you x Congratulations and we wish you well. Helen, Simon and all at Midfeeds and Tack ‘n Togs

Our client is the horse

Who is the client when fitting a saddle? The horse is our client, maintains Tack ‘n Togs saddle fitter Claire Jurgens.

T

he owner is certainly an executive stakeholder, but it’s the horse that is the centre of what Tack ‘n Togs believes is the key to its superior saddle fitting. The saddle impacts the horse’s gait and movement and ill-fitting saddles can cause long term damage. Well-fitting saddles enable freedom of movement, comfort and a calmer temperament. Saddle fitting is not just a technical consultation, but a relationship between the saddle fitter, the horse and the rider. It begins with a gentle approach looking at the overall conformation and how the horse behaves. Is it calm and relaxed or fidgety and nervous? An experienced saddle fitter is able to trace the muscles in the neck to feel for tension giving an indication of the root cause of problems, perhaps in the mouth, upper jaw or the first two vertebrae. A problem in these areas results in a domino like effect throughout the horse.

Just like humans, when we are in pain, we tense our muscles and compensate by overusing other parts of our bodies. We experience referred pain and additional aches not related to the source pain. By travelling down the back, feeling the vertebrae, ribs, loin, croup and sciatic nerve, the saddle fitter is able to identify the problem points and, although not a physiotherapist or a chiropractor, the saddle fitter tries to identify any pressure points which need to be attended to by a physiotherapist before fitting the saddle, if required. These principle pressure points cause the horse to stretch or dip their back in a particular way indicating whether there is pain or not. After this physical examination, the saddle is placed on the horse and its reactions, feedback and response are of utmost importance. Tips and tricks for checking your saddle position (as suggested by Roberto Rasia of Erreplus Saddlery Italy): Saddle position: The saddle should sit just behind the shoulder, if too far forward it can result in pressure on the shoulder. Free Shoulder: Once girthed and rider up, you should be able to slide your hand under the panel, having only light pressure. Balance in the seat: Panels must have contact along the horses back distributing the rider’s weight evenly. Pommel clearance: The pommel must not touch the wither, Roberto suggests 3 to 4 fingers grace. Gullet width: The gullet of the saddle must be wide enough to accommodate your horse’s spine. Rider: The saddle should fit the rider, not too big or too small. Saddle: The saddle must not be too long and extend past the last rib. Some tweaks like flocking adjustment or narrowing of the gullet may be required and this should be done on the spot to get the correct fit to the horse. Saddles shouldn’t be taken away for flocking they need to be refitted there and then.

Horses change by as much as 10 to 15 kilos a day due to climate, grazing, feed and rider changes, so your saddle should be checked frequently, ideally every three months. Horses only stop growing between the ages of 6 and 8 depending on the breed. Muscle development will happen continually as the horse is brought in and out of work. Recently a horse reared every time the rider mounted and asked it to go forward. The newly designed panel in the Erreplus saddle made a significant change in the horse’s behaviour bringing about a calm demeanour. The change of saddle and new shoulder free panel designed by Roberto Rasia enabled more freedom and comfort. Roberto Rasia “Two great protagonists, horse and rider, who meet, communicate and become one through an object of great fascination, the saddle. The horse’s comfort comes first, performance will definitely follow.”

and giving the horse the ability to perform at his best. Greg Scott “The Erreplus saddle allows me to stay neutral.” Erreplus saddle trees have been designed for all disciplines. Roberto has also kept in mind and recognised the differences between male and female anatomy and also the different seat preferences of riders. The tree’s have holes in the seat in corresponding with the ischium and pubis to guarantee maximum comfort for the rider.

Adelinde Cornellissen “I love these saddles and their capacity to adapt to the horse in an ideal way, allowing great freedom of movement. Using them I can maintain a perfectly balanced and comfortable position. I could ride with them forever!” Establishing a relaxed, friendly but respectful and sensitive relationship with the horse is the gift of an experienced and professional saddle fitter – it is both a craft and a talent and should never be underestimated! Erreplus Saddles are available from Tack ‘n Togs. For more information contact Claire Jurgens on (011)468 1824 or visit www.tackntogs.co.za

Barry Taylor “It’s one of the most comfortable saddles I have ridden in, normally saddles need to be ridden in for a while to get comfortable, but the Erreplus you just get on and go.”

Roberto Rasia checking the saddle….

The design of the SL panel in the Erreplus saddle is first of its kind. It has been designed with knowledge of the horse’s anatomy and movement. Roberto Rasia has adjusted the point of the tree, angling it out by a further 15 degrees allowing the shoulder to have freedom and movement

A word on Equine Dental Care, by Steve Clark HORSE TRADING runs a bi-monthly equine dental care feature with the insights of equine dental health expert, Steve Clark. As a Qualified Equine Dental Technician, Steve has not only gained extensive experience in equine dental care internationally, but he was even the apprentice of the world renowned International Association of Equine Dentistry examiner, Fernando Martinez. In his feature, Steve covers interesting topics on equine dental care, including case studies, teaching you some of the best equine dental health promotion practices and more.

Common Dental Issues and their Effects on Your Horse. If domesticated horses do not get the correct dental care at regular intervals, minor issues in the mouth can progressively escalate to become major issues. These issues often result in painful consequences for the horse. In this month’s dental feature, we are looking at

figure 1 22

examples of real-life specimens that speak volumes about the importance of regular dental care. Figure one is that of a geriatric horse with severe problems in the mouth. He was emaciated and struggled to eat. Unfortunately due to his age, conservative treatment was the only option, figure 2. By improving his mastication, the horse could be made a lot more comfortable.

figure 2

www.horsetrading.co.za

F E AT U R E

figure 3

Figure 3 is the before and after treatment of a horse with a large Rostral Hook on the first premolar without any bit seat. This can cause extreme discomfort with any bit pressure as well as when the horse is asked to stop or collect. The hook had to be reduced and a bit seat installed. Had the mouth been treated and aligned sooner, the horse’s discomfort would not have been as severe.

Figure 5 depicts another geriatric horse that has limited molar contact. Unfortunately, not much could be done in the way of corrective dentistry. That said, however, an incisor reduction was necessary which in turn enabled the remaining molars to be in occlusion. The sharp edges that caused tongue laceration was also reduced. Depicting the excessive hook on the corner incisor a horse, Figure 6 is a photograph of a horse with limited anterior/posterior (forwards and backwards) movement of the lower jaw. This occurred due to the incisors not lining up and the caudal half of the corner incisor, having nothing to wear against. It is helpful to remember that a lot of dental issues originate from misalignments and genetic abnormalities in the mouth.

figure 4

Figure 4 shows cheek laceration due to the sharp Rostral Hook on the front of the premolar without a bit seat. This would obviously be extremely painful for the horse – something which is completely unnecessary and can be avoided with regular dental care.

figure 5

Equine Dental Technicians and horse owners are united in our goal – that horses should be kept healthy and comfortable throughout their lives. We need to work together to ensure that we realise this. By arranging regular dental check-ups and ensuring that the dental technician has access to the appropriate tools and instruments (like sedating your horse so that the technician can see inside his mouth more easily), keeping your horse’s mouth in tip-top condition is simple. Keen to find out more or need help with your horse’s teeth? Contact Steve Clark on 078 3999 506 or at equinedentalaltech@gmail.com
