Nutritional advice line (011)468 1834 Fly control forms an essential part of stable management. Flies around the stables can make horse irritable and high strung and can also be carriers if potential pathogens. However, the adult fly accounts for only 20% of the fly population. The remaining 80% are larvae and pupae in breeding sites. To effectively control flies, use an integrated approach to reduce fly numbers in and around your stables. Jenny’s Jabber In loving memory of our founder, without whom the African equestrian industry would be so much poorer, we are introducing this section to the magazine. From now on, you can expect to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and blog reviews and much more. With the month of September – Womens’ Month – being around the corner, the team at HORSE TRADING thought of the perfect way to kick off Jenny’s Jabber… With an article about grooming, of course. Here’s Ten Tips for a Terrific Tail: 1)

Before you brush your horse’s tail, run your fingers through it first. This will help detangle the tail and prevent that brushing results in a lot of hair breakage.

2)

Don’t brush tails daily – this increases thinning of tail.

3)

When you do brush, gently start at the bottom and work your way up.

4)

Invest in good quality shampoo especially for horses.

5)

Ensure that your horse’s tail has dried thoroughly.

6)

Rub some baby oil in the tail to give it extra nourishment and prevent severe tangling.

7)

Loosely braid the tail hair to prevent tangling and breakage and make the long hair more manageable.

8)

After braiding, you can bag the tail to protect the tail from environmental factors.

9)

Healthy hair comes from the inside – ensure that your horse has access to quality nutrients that will boost hair health.

10) Take your time. This is the perfect opportunity for you to spend some quality time together and to give your horse the TLC that it deserves. www.horsetrading.co.za

HAVE YOUR SAY With our brand new section of Letters to the Editor, we are inviting you to get in contact and let us know what’s on your mind… In this section that is specifically dedicated to you, you can air your views, rant, rave, ask for advice from the editor and our expert readers or even be the expert reader that responds, offering advice to others. Whatever you choose, this is the perfect portal for you to get involved! And if you’d rather say it anonymously, the team at HORSE TRADING are committed to respecting your choice and privacy. Simply email your letter through to editor@horsetrading.co.za and we will be sure to publish your point of view! Happy writing! 5

Not Just Horsing Around… We have all heard the tales… A young boy with a severe aggression problem is sent off to a farm as a last attempt at rehabilitation. There he meets a stunning stud and, after a while, the two become inseparable – each offering the other a safe space in which to be vulnerable and experience emotional intimacy and growth.

Interacting with Horses Offers Children Unique Benefits

Sounds a lot like the plot of the movie, but horses helping humans develop is far from just fiction… In fact, it is becoming a widely practised discipline by psychologists and physical therapists alike. Therapeutic horseback riding (also known as equine-assisted therapy and hippotherapy) refers to a physical and psychological therapeutic approach in which horses, together with specifically trained co-facilitators, are employed as a vehicle for the healing or development of human beings.

History of Horse-helped Therapy This is not a new phenomenon. Rather, the ancient Greeks relied on horses’ therapeutic faculties since 600BC. One of the most famous studies on the topic in modern times was conducted by the French physician Cassaign in 1875. Cassaign concluded that riding horses helps individuals with neurological disorders, joint pain, immobility and problems with balancing. As a result of these findings, physicians all around the globe started experimenting with “alternative” approaches to therapy. The Soviet Union, for example, started using encounters with dolphins as a way to treat peoples’ nervous conditions. Not much later America found that exposing elderly people in old age homes to rabbits had a relaxing effect on them.

8

The modern day approach to equine-assisted therapy is largely credited to British physiotherapists, who - in the 1950s – turned to horses as a tool for improving the lives of disabled people. 1969 saw the founding of the Riding for the Disabled Association which has even garnered the enthusiastic support of the royal family (and the Queen specifically).

Horse as Healer Until recently, equine-assisted therapy has largely been used to help people with disabilities. Research conducted by the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) has concluded that the multidimensional movements particularly associated with horses provide disabled riders with “the opportunity to explore, control and coordinate [their] posture and movement.”

www.horsetrading.co.za

F E AT U R E When riding a horse, a disabled person’s body is gently and rhythmically moved in the same fashion as an abled person’s body would move while walking. “Positive effects from the movement of the horse can be seen in motor coordination, muscle tone, postural alignment, stiffness/flexibility and strength. Other effects on the body systems can and do occur as well. Changes are often seen in the respiratory, cognitive, sensory processing, balance, affective arousal and speed/language production functions,” state the AHA. Equine-assisted therapy has been found beneficial for a variety of conditions including cognitive impairments, physical disability or impairments and emotional conditions such as phobias. Another factor that differentiates physical therapy with horses, is that unlike with exercise machines that normally only focus on one muscle group at a time and that does not employ natural human movement, riding a horse pushes a person to draw on the entire body to steer, control and adjust the horse to maintain balance. Since riding requires much more than just physical ability, but also involves cognitive alertness, it reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the rider. This, combined with the pleasure and excitement of riding acts as encouragement for the rider to work through the pain and discomfort, making therapeutic horseback riding a highly effective approach to remedial therapy.

Offering your children the opportunity to attend equineassisted therapy, or even just interact with you own horse, results in the following additional physical perks: • Improved balance & muscle strength • Improved coordination & faster reflexes • Increased overall muscular control & postural control • Decreased spasticity & wider range of motion • Improves visual-spatial perception & motor skills This interaction also aids psychological and cognitive development, such as: • Improved self-confidence & self-esteem • Aids development of self-discipline • Develops child’s patience • Improves risk taking abilities • Offers child a sense of socialisation interpersonal skills • Helps reduces stress Due to the special bond that develops so rapidly between a child and a horse, children often see horses as comforters, whom they can trust and develop emotional intimacy with. This serves as the foundation for all of their emotional encounters as they mature.

At this point, it is important to note that while it is often called therapeutic horseback riding instead of equineassisted therapy or hippotherapy, patients do not actually have to ride the horse for the therapeutic process to be facilitated. The mere act of engaging and interacting with such a large and gentle animal can prove therapeutic by giving patients something to care about, a companion. Grooming such as brushing, bathing and currying also aid the patient in the range of motion they experience and has a relaxing effect as well. It has even been clinically documented that merely being close to horses alters human brainwave patterns - we calm down and become more centred and focussed.

Improving Childhood Development With equine-assisted therapy yielding such a comprehensive range of benefits, it didn’t take psychologists long to ascertain the impact that interaction with horses has on children. First, there is the fact that being outdoors means that children are breathing in fresh air and experiencing the freedom and excitement that natures has to offer. Then, there is the fact that interaction with the horse itself gives children the chance to build trust, offer nourishment and experience friendship. Horses are non-judgemental, bringing no prejudices and expecting nothing from the interaction. And finally, there is the fact that learning to communicate with and guide such a large animal results in a huge boost for the child’s self-esteem. 9

It seems Winston Churchill spoke wisely when he said: “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”

The Value of a Great Advert “Make it simple. Make it memorable. Make it inviting to look at. Make it fun to read.” – Leo Burnett, founder of a worldwide advertising giant, who helped catapult brands like McDonalds and Coca-cola to international success.

Over the years, the team at HORSE TRADING have learned just how valuable placing professional advertising in the magazine can be. Our clients with clearly conceptualised, decorously designed and well written advertisements boast much higher success rates than their counterparts who present pixelated or unprofessional adverts that look like DIY jobs. An advertisement that complies with the above criteria – in which the overall design of the advert, the colours, the layout and the text is well conceptualised and woven together effectively – has a much greater impact on your audience. There are many reasons for this positive impact, such as: •

The overall design of the advert says something about your brand as a whole, how trustworthy and reputable your brand is and whether it is wise to invest in your products.

• Having a well-designed advertisement helps your advertisement stand out from all the others and gain more visibility.

Don’t have a full-time marketing specialist on your team? Don’t fret! HORSE TRADING magazine is running a “Three Months, Free Ad” promotion. Advertise with us for three consecutive months and we will design the advert for you for free! You get an attention grabbing advertisement AND three months of publicity to make the magic happen – all in one deal! Alternatively, you can still get your advert designed by one of the uber talented members of the HORSE TRADING team for a meagre R450 per hour. Contact us at studio@horsetrading.co.za and let us help you craft an impressive ad.

“Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.” -Mark Twain, American author and humourist.

• Design reinforces the text (or copy) of your advertisement. Masterfully crafted copy on its own won’t seal the deal. • Emotions are invoked when design has been done dexterously, this boosts the emotional appeal of your brand and helps drive greater sales.

YOUNG EQUESTRIAN STARS

Micail Morton

With the Friesian horse being known for its cheerful and calm temperament, it’s no wonder that six year old Micail Morton and her Friensian friend, Yvoné are such good buds… Just look at them in these pictures. You can see that Micail is extremely comfortable taking the lead and caring for Yvoné. She cleans her and walks her and even climbs under Yvoné’s tummy. Micail is passionate about ponies too. Here she is pictured with her picture perfect pony Kahlua. What a cute companion! Little Kahlua is still just a stallion, but Micail works wonders with him, grooming him and even cleaning his hooves. Having two fur-friends has given Micail the opportunity to learn all about horse care and has enabled her to develop her sense of responsibility and compassion. There is so much trust between them, and the horses simply adore Micail.

F E AT U R E

Here at HORSE TRADING, we particularly adore this section of the magazine. Our spectacular group of parents who are involved and engaged with their children’s lives always send us the cutest photos and precious tales about their horsing around… We invite you to do the same and, who knows, next time we could be featuring your child as the Young Equestrian Star of the month.

It’s the perfect place to share their cute stories or tell us about their amazing feats. We want to nurture young passion and talent, so let’s give them the credit that they deserve. You can email your photos and stories through to studio@horsetrading.co.za

Yasmin Soror Meet Yasmin Soror and her stunning dark bay Boereperd pony, Samurai, photographed at Buckingham Stables & Equestrian Centre. Ten year old Yasim and eight year old Samurai have been inseparable since the day they met – almost three years ago.

Checkout the photo where Yasmin is riding Samurai bareback in the arena – this just demonstrates how special their bond is and how much trust there is between them. Don’t they just look like the perfect pair?

Samurai has been Yasmin’s perfect little friend. Over the years they have had so many good giggles. And interacting with Samuria has been a great boost for Yasmin’s confidence.

American Bashkir Curly Horse Getting to know our neigh-bours With almost 40 popular equestrian breeds in Southern Africa, the team at HORSE TRADING is delving into the differences between them. Every month we shall feature a different breed, exploring its history and tracing its temperament. That way, you will get a refresher course on the difference between an Ass and an Arabian…

American Bashkir Curly Horse History In 1898 Peter Damele and his father were taking a leisurely ride over the Peter Hanson mountain range in Central Nevada, when they caught a glimpse of this furry equine for the first time in modern history. Even at the age of 90, Peter could still vividly recall what they saw that day: “three horses with tight curly ringlets over their entire bodies.” Intrigued by these unusual animals and where they could possibly have come from, Peter took them to his ranch, where his son – Benny Damele – continued breeding them even after his father’s passing in 1981. Most of the Amercian Bashkir Curlies in the US today can still be traced back to the Dameles.

American Bashki Curlies are known for their reliable nature and great work ethic, which explains why it is one of South Africa’s most popular breeds.

Physical Attributes Sporting a curly coat, mane, tail, fetlocks and inner ear hair, the American Bashkir Curly appear in most of the common horse colours. They are a medium sized breed, ranging between 14 and 16 hands in height and weigh an average of 400 kg (which is significantly lighter than most other popular breeds found in Southern Africa). This breed’s curly coat also results in it being hypoallergenic – making it the perfect partner for those who suffer from severe allergies. Temperament & Uses The American Bashkir Curly is renowned for its calm, friendly and intelligent personality. Curlies, as they are often referred to, are bright and alert which makes them easily trainable. They also boast the movement, endurance, and heart to excel in competition. This makes them a great choice for dressage and jumping. They flourish when used for general riding and occasionally make really great endurance riders as well.
