FROM THE EDITOR It’s always nice to leave the writing of this snippet in the magazine right until the end. Just as deadline starts looming, I am inspired. Writing it at the start of each month, by contrast, would prove futile. One can never quite predict how each month’s magazine will turn out, you see. It is almost as if it takes shape as the month progresses, moulded by everything and everyone around it. By the time that each edition goes to print, it is a much different (and better) magazine than what we set out to create in the beginning of that month. For the team at HORSE TRADING, every month’s magazine has been the manifestation of a unique journey. Of course it is ‘work’ to take the magazine from nothing more than blank sheets of paper to the much-loved staple that you pick up at the tack shop. Yet it is so rewarding. Every month we get to start afresh. We get to chat to so many of our loyal advertisers and passionate readers. We hear what you like about the magazine and what you don’t. We hear what you want to see more of and what you think we should just leave out altogether. We are fortunate to connect with so many of you, to hear your stories and be considered a part of your lives. This humbles us and honours us. It has been six months since we lost our founding matriarch. In this time we had to find our feet all over again. We had to carve a new, fresher, identity that corresponded with the change in HORSE TRADING’s management. With 22 odd years’ legacy comes a rich history, but also a particular set of expectations. At times it was nerve wrecking to travel into this new frontier. Yet through it all you have been nothing but open-minded, friendly and supportive. May you be blessed with a wonderful, joyous and lovefilled festive season. Our wish for you and your loved ones is that the month ahead brings rest and rejuvenation. We look forward to the new year with you. PS: since we are publishing this Double Deluxe Dec & Jan edition, the next magazine will be available in February 2015.

Jenny’s Jabber In loving memory of our founder, without whom the African equestrian industry would be so much poorer, we have introduced this section to the magazine. Here you can expect to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and blog reviews and much more. In the name of all things horsey And seeing as the silly season is in full swing, We thought these lyrics would remind you Of the joy that, for so many generations, our equine friends always bring. Enjoy reading through these original lyrics of Jingle Bells by James Lord Pierpont (1822 – 1893). Verse 1: Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bobtail ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight! Chorus: Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way. Oh! what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way; Oh! what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.

Verse 3: A day or two ago, The story I must tell I went out on the snow, And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh, He laughed as there I sprawling lie, But quickly drove away.

Verse 2: A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride And soon, Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side, The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot He got into a drifted bank And then we got upsot.

Verse 4: Now the ground is white Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight and sing this sleighing song; Just get a bobtailed-bay Two forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! you’ll take the lead.

YOUNG EQUESTRIAN STARS TANIT WILLIAMS

T

his month’s Young Equestrian Star is all the way from Port Elizabeth. With a passion for show jumping, eight year old Tanit Williams is a particularly promising rider. In 2012, after only one year of riding, Tanit excelled as she represented Port Elizabeth in the SA Pony Riders Championship. Drawing a great deal of her inspiration from her godmother and aunt, Jade Hooke, who recently represented South Africa in the World Equestrian Games in France and after winning this year’s Championship class of at the Spring Show in Port Elizabeth, it is clear that Tanit is taking the equestrian world by storm. Here at HORSE TRADING, we particularly adore this section of the magazine. Our spectacular group of parents who are involved and engaged with their children’s lives always send us the cutest photos and precious tales about their horsing around… We are looking forward to being inundated with your photos and fables!

The Annual Lipizzaner Ball

A dazzling evening fit to celebrate the magnificent Lipizzaners!

T

he 8th November 2014 brought with it stormy skies and lots of rain, but this didn’t dampen the spirit of the attendees at the Annual Lipizzaner Ball held to raise fund and awareness of these magnificent creatures. The theme this year being ‘The Great Gatsby’ the indoor arena was filled with flapper girls, feathers, sparkles and high heels. The men came out in style, in a wide range of attire, mainly black tie, many accompanied by the signature hat of the era. Guests were greeted in the ballroom by the Lipizzaner stallion, Siglavy Erem, standing on the dance floor, resplendent in gold bridle and saddle cloth, accompanied by two Lipizzaner riders dressed in Gatsby gear. The glamorous crowd set amongst gorgeous tables really did let one’s mind conjure up images of the Roaring Twenties. The tables were laid with gold damask tablecloths and black lace overlays. Each lady received a gift bag sponsored by Swarovski, with two of their flagship fragrances inside. The men received a silk tie set complete with cufflinks and a tiepin to match. At every table setting, there was a most beautifully packaged luxury chocolate. The guests definitely left feeling thoroughly spoilt. Throughout the evening, a ‘Silent Auction was run. Many beautiful pieces of art, including a spectacular oil painting by renowned South African artist, Gavin Collins, Jenna Clifford jewellery, Ardmore pottery, Swarovski hampers and other services such as skydiving and tickets to ‘War Horse’ had been donated in order to aid the fundraising efforts of the evening. Those seriously interested in the pieces on offer could be seen casually strolling amongst the

14

display periodically throughout the course of the evening, keeping an eye on their future possessions. The Culinary Company produced a gourmet menu, including smoked salmon and avocado starters, peppered beef fillet for main and a scrumptious display of finger desserts. The complimentary wine on the table warmed up the crowd on a chilly evening. All in all, a fantastic ‘fine dining’ experience. Following the scrumptious starter, the regal white stallions we had all come to see and support gave us a demonstration of what they could do and reminded us all why we had gotten ourselves glammed up that evening. Watching those magnificent animals perform around the outside of the ballroom while we sat seated in the middle sent chills down the spines of many of those present. Timing, control, perfection, beauty, magnificence… only some of the words that came to mind as these beauties performed. A rousing ovation after they were done showed the Lipizzaners and their trainers a little of our appreciation for the hours that went into performing what can only be described as ‘ballet on horseback’. The evening was ably hosted by well-known South African musician and entertainer, Ian von Memerty. His wit and humour entertained the crowd and kept the evening very enjoyable. Ian treated the crowd to a few of the numbers from his hit musical ‘A Handful of Keys’. A number of lucky draw prizes were also given out during the course of the evening. These included Lipizzaner merchandise, Monte Casino hot air balloon rides, bird park tickets and a number of group dance classes sponsored by the Dance Junxion, who also treated the guests to a sparkling display of the Charleston. www.horsetrading.co.za

F E AT U R E

The evening was graced by quite a few very talented dancers. The music was a good mix of fast and slow, old and new, ballroom and rock and everyone joined in on the dance floor. And then the highlight of the evening in term of fundraising. Four Lipizzaners were being ‘auctioned’ off for their keep for 2015. To the highest bidder would go the honour of ‘owning’ one of these magnificent beasts for a year. Currently there are 32 performing Lipizzaners at the Lipizzaner Centre and 27 mares, foals and young stock on the stud farm now located close to Hartbeesport Dam. Looking after these animals is a costly business and the Lipizzaners rely on fundraising such as this gala event. Three stallions on auction made their appearance in the ballroom, the first being led in hand, the second being ridden so very elegantly in side saddle, and the third stallion, the most experienced horse at the Centre, showed some advanced dressage movements under saddle. A video of the first foal of the season, taken when she was three days old, touched everyone’s hearts. There was a great team spirit amongst the guests and horses were taken not only by individuals but by groups of guests who clubbed together. The Austrian Ambassador, her Excellency Brigitte OeppingerWalchshofer, and her guests from the Austrian business community in South Africa, pledged a further sponsorship donation of R25,000. Spurred by this turn of events, Ian von Memerty appealed to the South Africans in the room to match this donation, asking people in the audience to pledge R1 000 to the cause. The South Africans reached a total of R30 000, whereupon the Austrians raised their donation to match the South Africans! Everyone around the room was very generous in their donations and it all went a long way to paying for the upkeep of the Lipizzaners. A fabulous evening was had by all! www.horsetrading.co.za

The Tale of the ‘Old One’ Enjoy this festive fable penned by the American Reverend David L. Griffith.

A

brother and sister had made their usual hurried, obligatory pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm was where they had grown up and had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farm. Through the years the tree had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The young siblings had fond memories of their childhood here, but the city hustle and bustle added more excitement to their lives, and called them away to a different life. The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, and getting out to the barn on those frosty mornings was getting harder, but it gave them a reason to get up in the mornings and a reason to live. They sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end. Angry, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks “Why do you not at least dispose of The Old One? She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her. You should cut corners and save so you can have more for yourselves. How can this old worn out horse bring you anything but expense and work? Why do you keep her anyway?” The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, scuffed at the barn floor and replied, “Yes, I could use a pair of new boots. His arm slid defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her near with gentle caressing he rubbed her softly behind her ears. He replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.” Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole

16

through the valley. The old couple shook their heads in sorrow that it had not been a happy visit. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How is it that these young folks do not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts? So it was, that because of the unhappy leavetaking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the “Old One”. In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses.. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire’s fury. His wife back from calling for help cradled him in her arms, clinging to each other, they wept at their loss. By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife, exhausted from their grief, huddled together before the barn. They were speechless as they rose from the cold snow covered ground. They nodded thanks to the firemen as there was nothing anyone could do now. The old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as his shaking old hands clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red Bandana. Brokenly he whispered, “We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared and pray for our beloved most precious gifts that have been taken from us. And so, he took her by the hand and slowly helped

her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his old and withered hand.

Bedded down about the “Old One” close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe.

The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they paused to rest, looking up to the top of the hill the old couple gasped and fell to their knees in amazement at the incredible beauty before them.

At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares that were in foal with a new year’s crop of babies, pressed uneasily against the “Old One” as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of the old man and his wife.

Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this. They were breathless as the old man held his wife tighter in his arms. Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and mystified, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the tree, in resplendent glory, a mist hovering over and glowing in the darkness was their Christmas gift. Shadows glistening in the night light.

17

Those she loved she had not disappointed. Her body was brittle with years, tired from the climb, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift--Because of love. Only Because of love. Tears flowed as the old couple shouted their praise and joy. And again the peace of love filled their hearts.

Getting to know our neighbours With almost 40 popular equestrian breeds in Southern Africa, the team at HORSE TRADING is delving into the differences between them. Every month we shall feature a different breed, exploring its history and tracing its temperament. That way, you will get a refresher course on the difference between an Ass and an Arabian…

PERCHERON History While we know that the Percheron’s modern bloodline can be traced all the way back to the area of La Perche within the province of Normandy, France, pin-pointing the breed’s exact origin is quite tricky. Some say that Percherons are descendants of the original horse ancestors found in the Ice Age. Others believe that one source of the breed’s foundation bloodstock come from the captured Moorish cavalry horses from the Battle of Poitiers in 732 AD. According to this theory another source of the foundation bloodstock comes from the Arabian stallions brought to the La Perche countryside by Muslem invaders in the eight century. Physical Attributes Originally bred with the main purpose of being war horses, it was not long until people realised that the Percheron’s sheer strength makes it ideal for pulling stage coaches as well. So much so that Percherons were extensively exported from France to both North and South America as well as Britain as a work-horse. It is during this time that Percherons were used to influence the genetics of many other heavy horse breeds. Percherons range up to 19 hands high and can weigh as much as 1180kg. Unfortunately, one of the attributes that they are the most revered for – their glorious size and solid build- is also a major reason as to why the breed is regularly used for meat production in France. Their meat is so popular in certain parts of Europe that in 2007, for example, France exported 13 710 live horses to be used as food. In addition 8 610 tonnes of horse meat was exported from France in that same year as well. Temperament & Uses As an attentive but docile breed, the Percheron is relied upon across the world as the perfect choice for pulling large carriages, sleigh rides and hay rides. In fact, they have proven to be so ideal for this that the biggest Pecheron collection in Europe can be found in Paris, where they are used to pull trams in the main park street of Disney Land Paris. Known as a breed that is particularly willing to please, South Africans tend to call on Percherons for show riding and dressage. 18
