SPECIAL FOR OCTOBER:
Nutrition alone won’t make your horse or pony a star performer, but it certainly goes a long way in ensuring maximum performance under stressful conditions. As a horse’s workload increases, so does its need for additional performance fuel. The ideal way to provide this to your competition horse is through correct feeding of concentrates, adequate intake of good quality roughage, access to clean fresh water and appropriate supplementation. For more information on good feeding practices and correct supplementation contact one of our in house nutritional advisors. Marquerite Oberholzer Bsc (Agric) Animal Science midfeedsbuy@mweb.co.za

Don’t you just love the warmer months? Not just because of the magnificent sights of glorious green grass or the sounds of happy birds chirping… But because it’s the part of the year when the South African equestrian community comes alive. You simply have to glance over the calendar to get a peek at the amount of sporting and other horsey events coming up.
E / ads@horsetrading.co.za OR studio@horsetrading.co.za
By the time the October edition of HORSE TRADING hits the shelves, the Galencia South African Derby will be well on its way. This year’s derby promises to pack a powerful punch of professional show jumpers, drawing more than 5000 fans from all over South Africa. There are a host of other exciting events coming up too. Like the 3rd leg of the Mark White Nissan Equitation Super League Series, Endurance Nationals and the Gauteng Dressage Championships. Plus the extravagant year-end functions, like the annual Lipizzaner Ball, and fun fundraisers, like the Shumbashaba ‘Music in the Fields’ fundraiser that will be covered in next month’s issue of HORSE TRADING. One of the other major events on this year’s equestrian calendar that I simply must mention is the BMW International Polo Series that saw SA’s finest ponies take of America in what proved to be an action-packed match. Turn to page 14 to read all about how the South African team leaped to a roaring victory. As the next couple of months pass, we will be covering all the events that we attend. So watch this space! In the meantime, here’s to an eventful and elaborate season of equestrian splendour! Liz

Jenny’s Jabber In loving memory of our founder, without whom the African equestrian industry would be so much poorer, we have introduced this section to the magazine. Here you can expect to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and blog reviews and much more. Spring’s beautiful blossoms have been accompanied by the birth of foals across South Africa. The team at HORSE TRADING have been privy to photographs of beautiful new-borns from some of the country’s most prestigious stud farms. If you, too, have been blessed with a new addition to your equestrian family, one of the challenges you will soon be faced with is weaning the young one from its mother. Even though you would normally only start weaning your foals when they are little older, we’re offering you some advice to bear in mind when the time comes. Three things to remember when weaning your foal: • Food for thought From the moment a foal is separated from its mother until the foal turns one year old, it requires a great amount of nutrition. So much so, in fact, that it will consume as much as three percent of its body weight in dry feed on a daily basis. Talk to your local vet and ensure that you opt for feed that offers a high concentration in energy, protein and minerals to boost the young one’s health and growth.
• More stress equals less feeding During stressful times, it is natural for horses to start eating less or stop eating altogether. Since, as the previous tip explains, foals need to consume sufficient amounts of quality feed, it is important that you ensure that your foal eats enough. Giving the foal access to both pellets and hay will encourage it to feed more. It may also help to make sure that the food is placed away from distractions so that the foal doesn’t get frightened while in the process of feeding.
• Give them free reign Exercise helps horses de-stress. It is also a great way to boost your foal’s health and help it gain weight and build muscle mass while at the same time promoting bone growth. Turn your foal out regularly so that it can play, exercise and unwind. This should help ease the weaning process and boost its development. www.horsetrading.co.za

From Nickers to Neigh: Understanding What They Say
T
he University of Sussex in the U.K recently released findings from an interesting study about how horses communicate with each other. They found that, even though horses have impeccable eyesight (better than both dogs and cats), it is their ears that they rely on most when communicating with each other. This got me thinking about how much we know about horse to human communication. Paying attention to a horse’s ears as a means to gauge what she is thinking is a trick experienced riders have been relying on for ages. Often new riders invest in books covering the matter or watch video after video on the internet, but they struggle to develop a similar intuition to that which old horse hands sport. Less experienced riders also sometimes misinterpret equine communication by attributing the wrong message to their horse’s behaviour. It’s always worthwhile to be taken back to basics and recap the fundamental factors to bear in mind when trying to understand your horse better.

Siobhan Records, a dressage instructor from Saddle Fitting Specialists in Gauteng, offers us some basic tips. Since the age of two and a half years old, Siobhan has been riding horses and by the age of 18 she had won the South African Dressage Team Championships a number of times. She holds a saddle fitting qualification from the UK and is a SANEF qualified instructor, lecturer and examiner. Being a seasoned hand, Siobhan has honed her horsemanship skills and has gained valuable experience in the effective communication with horses. Firstly Siobhan reminds us that, just like with humans, there is no universal language for horses. Most of their mannerisms are learned and brought about as a result of past experiences. This means that no two horses will react or communicate in exactly the same way. It is for this reason that Siobhan recommends spending ample time with your horse. Besides strengthening your bond, really getting to know your horse will enable you to deepen your understanding of its body language and vice versa. This, Siobhan explains, is the difference between a rider and a horseman. Many riders arrive at the stables with their horses already tacked up and waiting. After the riding www.horsetrading.co.za
F E AT U R E
session, the horse will be handed back to the groom to be taken back to the stalls and groomed, fed and so forth. Horseman, on the other hand, invest their time in grooming, leading and lunging their horses themselves. It is this time spent interacting with their horse that offers true horseman the valuable insight of what makes their horse unique, what it likes and dislikes, its character, mannerisms and the best way to approach communicating with it. Siobhan explains that “I have one horse who I compete with at ‘Advanced’, when he’s relaxed and working in a good fashion both ears are pricked forward, however with another horse, if his ears are pricked I know he’s not paying attention to me and I’m about to experience a rodeo show, instead of the harmony of classical dressage.” This example demonstrates the value of having spent sufficient time with each horse to be able to gauge its unique and specific mannerisms. “Horsemanship needs to be instilled at an early age, however most parents don’t see the benefit of theory lessons on rainy days, or learning to muck out stables and groom on pony camp. These lessons make horsemen, and result in learning to communicate with your horse in a better fashion. It’s important to remember that you need to walk before you run.” It is this time spent investing in your relationship with your horse that will yield a better understanding of equestrian communication. “As the old English Proverb says; Show me your horse and I will tell you what you are”. She recommends learning from people with experience and remembering that there is no such thing as a stupid question. If you decide to turn to the internet for advice, ensure that you go to reputable sites. “When it comes to communicating with your horse,” Siobhan advises, “nothing beats hands-on experience under the watchful eye of a professional.” It is a huge challenge to effectively communicate with your horse that should not be taken lightly. “It’s a daunting task, one only has to Google horse behaviour to come up with thousands of pages of contrary views, along with internet chat rooms filled with people with no experience sagely handing out nonsensical pearls of wisdom. It’s no wonder people are confused, never mind their poor horses.” That said, putting in the legwork and getting to know your horse’s specific intricacies will benefit your relationship and advance your ability to communicate and understand your horse.

YOUNG EQUESTRIAN STARS Here at HORSE TRADING, we particularly adore this section of the magazine. Our spectacular group of parents who are involved and engaged with their children’s lives always send us the cutest photos and precious tales about their horsing around… We invite you to do the same and, who knows, next time we could be featuring your child as the Young Equestrian Star of the month. It’s the perfect place to share their cute stories or tell us about their amazing feats. We want to nurture young passion and talent, so let’s give them the credit that they deserve. You can email your photos and stories through to studio@horsetrading.co.za If you are not yet grabbing every opportunity to send through pictures of your gallivanting young ones, we strongly encourage you to start doing so. This section of HORSE TRADING is aimed at developing children’s understanding of horses, and seeing themselves or the friends in the magazine just adds a new zest. We are looking forward to being inundated with your photos and fables!

BMW International Polo All the Rage as SA Bring Home the Trophy The 2014 BMW International Polo Series saw an epic battle between the youth of the South African team and the experience of Team USA. The South Africans, having never played together as a team before, pulled out all the stops against the competitive and well-regarded USA team to win the final Test, 10-6 at Waterfall Polo Estate in mid-September. The HORSE TRADING team enjoyed the near perfect weather conditions and the particularly fast-paced match. By the end of the first half, the South African team had the crowd ecstatic with a 6-2 lead. The American team, under the lead of Memo Gracida – once renowned as the world’s finest polo player after spending 21 years with a 10-goal handicap – quickly regained their pace which resulted in a dramatic second half in which six goals were scored. Four of these goals went to the American team, while the other two secured the win for South Africa. The final score being 10-6.
14
“The partnership between BMW and the South African Polo Association over the last 25 years has made the development of the sport possible. We are extremely grateful for the phenomenal support from BMW. This has encouraged more young players to enter the sport and has solidified South Africa’s presence in the polo world,” explained Clive Peddle, Executive Director of the South African Polo Association and South African team coach. The win for South Africa on home soil was the perfect way to conclude the test series. After gaping at the magnificence of the bold design and horsepower hidden under the hoods of the latest BMW range, the scores of spectators basked in the glory of their team’s victory.

He teaches throughout Australia, Europe, South Africa, USA, Canada and New Zealand. Andrew continues to coach riders and National Federations on the optimal use of learning theory for improved welfare of the trained horse as well as improved performance.
The Principles of Training
Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information about Dr. Andrew McLean! All information from http://www.aebc.com.au/
One of the outcomes of Andrew McLean’s PhD thesis was the proposition of eight training principles. These were presented for the first time at the satellite meeting of the 2003 congress of the International Society of Applied Ethology held in Abano-terme, Italy.
The Pressure Principle: The removal of physical pressure or discomfort reinforces (rewards) whatever behaviour precedes the moment of removal (i.e. leg(s) rein(s), spurs, whip-tap, headcollar). Pavlov’s Principle: Relaxation and attentiveness can only occur if the horse responds to predictable signals that do not invade the pain threshold. Thus, training the horse to respond unconditionally to light aids in hand and under saddle is essential.
The Fear Principle: Fear is quickly learned, not easily forgotten and is strongly associated with the movement of the horse’s legs. It is important to learn to identify the range of fear responses in horses and to diminish them to avoid the horse experiencing them. The Mentality Principle: Appreciating the similarities and differences in mental ability between horses and humans is crucial to effective and humane training.
The Exclusivity Principle: Each response should be trained and elicited separately (do not pull on the reins (stop) and kick with the legs (go) at the same time). The Shaping Principle: Responses should be progressively improved, step-by-step, learned response by learned response, toward the final outcome. The Proportional Principle: Increasing pressures of aids should correspond with increasing levels of response i.e. a small leg aid should result in a smaller go reaction, while a bigger aid should produce a stronger go response. The Self Carriage Principle: The horse must travel in-hand and under saddle free of any constant rein or leg pressure, otherwise he will switch off to them.

Appaloosa Horse
Getting to know our neighbours With almost 40 popular equestrian breeds in Southern Africa, the team at HORSE TRADING is delving into the differences between them. Every month we shall feature a different breed, exploring its history and tracing its temperament. That way, you will get a refresher course on the difference between an Ass and an Arabian…
Appaloosa History While the oldest reference to Appaloosas can be found in cave painting across Europe, the first depictions of domesticated Appaloosas date back to the artworks of the Ancient Greeks. In early modern times (about two hundred years after the Spanish introduced horses to North America), the Nez Perce tribe started developing the original American Appaloosa breed. They were first called the ‘Palouse horse’, possibly referring to the Palouse river which ran through the Nez Perce’s territory. This ‘Palouse’ later evolved into ‘Palousey’, ‘Appalousey’ and finally the Appaloosa that we know today. Physical Attributes In his diary entry on the 15th of February 1806, the famous explorer Meriwether Lewis, noted that he was quite impressed with the results of the Nez Perce’s breeding efforts. Lewis wrote: “Their horses appear to be of an excellent race; they are lofty, eligantly [sic] formed, active and durable…
18
some of these horses are pided with large spots of white irregularly scattered and intermixed with black, brown, bey [sic] or some other dark color.” Perhaps their most distinctive attribute is their beautiful leopard-print, or spotted, coats. Sporting their spots, Appaloosas can be found in a range of colours from Bay, Black, Brown, Buckskin, Chestnut, Cremello, Dun, Gray, Grulo, Pallomino to Roan and White. Since American Quarter horse and Arabian blood were incorporated into the Appaloosa bloodline around 1938, the Appaloosa stands between 14 and 16 hands tall and weighs between 430 and 570 kg. Temperament & Uses Their level-headedness and docile temperament means that they are easy-going and willing to please. Known for its obedient disposition, the Appaloosas are popular show jumping, dressage, enduring and trailing riding choices. With this reputation for being reliable, it’s no wonder that an Appaloosa was the notorious robber, Butch Cassidy’s, “mount of choice” during all of his robbery attempts in the American Old West.
