FROM THE EDITOR

GET IN TOUCH

Recently, I was tasked with writing a short description about HORSE TRADING for our new website. The website is an all-in-one virtual equestrian hub, where you can find everything that we publish in the monthly magazines and more… I knew I could write about its great specifications and functionality. Or, I could elaborate on the fact that you can find both the current and previous months’ magazines online. I could also explain how user-friendly it is and that it boasts an amazing online directory too.

E / ads@horsetrading.co.za OR studio@horsetrading.co.za

Yet, that didn’t feel like enough. It didn’t capture what HORSE TRADING is. Sure, it’s a magazine… And, yes, it does sport incredible equestrianrelated advertising from some of SA’s most prominent equestrian brands, amongst others. But there is more to it than that… I struggled for days to perfectly articulate this “feeling”. And then inspiration struck, which I thought was worth sharing with you: “HORSE TRADING may be the most popular magazine when it comes to buying and selling all your equestrian related goodies. As Africa’s most loved magazine for over two decades, HORSE TRADING is renowned for being THE place to advertise. That said, HORSE TRADING is about so much more than that… HORSE TRADING is about the equestrian community as a whole. Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a reader – we are all just horse loving folk at heart! HORSE TRADING functions as a platform for all the horsey people out there to connect and engage with each other. It offers us a sense of community and reminds us of our common cause.” Liz

Jenny’s Jabber In loving memory of our founder, without whom the African equestrian industry would be so much poorer, we have introduced this section to the magazine. Here you can expect to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and blog reviews and much more. Recently, social media has been abuzz with people protesting and cautioning against the unsafe transportation of your horse. This comes after a spate of accidents all over the world involving loaded horse trailers recently. So this month we thought we’ll offer you some advice on how to safeguard your most precious possession while in transit. Tips for Transporting Your Horse: •

Complete a thorough check of the vehicle as well as the trailer – ensure that all the lights are working, that you have access to a spare tyre for both the vehicle and the trailer and that the trailer doors can lock properly.

While you are completing the checks, remember to make sure that there are no bees or wasps in the trailer.

Open enough air vents in the trailer.

Once your horse has been loaded into the trailer, secure the butt-strap and back doors before you tie the horse to the trailer.

If you are travelling long distance, plan your route in such a manner that you are able to stop once an hour to give your horse time to relax and rest his legs.

When you do stop, try to park in a space where you can simply drive forward when you want to leave again. Having to reverse while your precious pony is in the trailer behind your car not only places additional pressure on you, but can also result in a light accident which may further unsettle all the passengers.

THIS IS YOUR SpaCE! This space is specifically dedicated to you! We invite you to get in contact with us so that we can start filling this section with all of your letters. You can write to us about whatever you choose – air your views, rant and rave, ask for or offer some advice or just share your stories. We also encourage you to send through your thoughts on the new look of HORSE TRADING. At the heart of it all, HORSE TRADING is about communicating and engaging with our fabulous equestrian community. And we would like to do more of that. Simply email editor@horsetrading.co.za ‘Letter to the Editor’ in the subject line.

with

We can’t wait to hear from you!

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, take it slow. Make sure you have more than enough time to arrive at your destination and rather drive slowly and safely.

In the Wake of a Quake... Over the last month, we have experienced two earthquakes in and around Gauteng. It’s about time that we investigate what the best ways are to keep your equine out of harm’s way during such a natural disaster.

When you start listening to people who have experienced the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred on the 5th of August or the 4.6 magnitude tremor that woke people after midnight on the 22nd of the same month, it’s uncanny how the majority of them voice the same concern: “Once I started hearing the rumble and feeling the earth move, I didn’t know what to do…” Some people say they wanted to run, but realised that it would be of no consequence as the earth would continue to shake regardless. Others advise that you follow their lead and get out of buildings in case they are weak and collapse. You could, of course, also apply what we see so often in Hollywood movies and climb underneath the nearest table until the tremors subside. One thing remains for certain, South Africans are not savvy when it comes to how to handle such a natural phenomenon… For the most part, we might

8

just have to sit tight and wait for the light shakes to pass. That said, in the event of a more severe or prolonged quake, we will have to take more decisive action to promote our safety and protect those around us. Just as it is an unusual and sometimes traumatic experience for us, earthquakes also unsettle horses. We need to make sure that we safeguard them wherever possible and that we have a set of safety protocol that we can rely on should such an emergency situation arise.

Review the Situation Before you start reacting, take a second to review exactly what is happening around you. Ask yourself if it is truly an emergency situation. If it is, do a quick analysis of the situation. Think about where your horse is – safe in the stables or out in the field? What risks are there – could a lamp fall over and cause a www.horsetrading.co.za

F E AT U R E fire, for example? Now, determine what kind of action needs to be taken to promote everyone’s safety.

Remain Calm One of the most important things to remember during any emergency situation is to remain as calm as possible. Your horse will already be panicked, when she picks up on your anxiety matters will just become worse. Ensure that you are unperturbed while you respond to the emergency and deal with your horse. That said, respond swiftly.

Have an Emergency Kit Handy Perhaps the sagest advice that I have ever received is to assemble an emergency kit that can be used for any emergency situation, whether it be a fire, a natural disaster or an injury. This kit should be so complete that others can use it in your absence. Consider putting the following items in your emergency kit: • •

• • • • • • • •

Two fully stocked first aid kits A list detailing how many animals you have on the premises and where each one can be found (you may also want to mention any specific health issues your horse may have) Contact details for a few veterinarians in your area Fire extinguishers A flashlight A knife Wire cutters Batteries Blankets A water bucket (you can place all of the above items in the bucket and just grab the bucket when you need your emergency kit)

Asses the Aftermath Once the tremors have passed and you have dealt with any injuries and/or extinguished all fires, focus on getting everyone into a safe environment. Earthquakes often have aftershocks and you want to secure all your loved-ones (whether two or four-legged). Take stock and make sure that both all the people and all the animals that were on the premises prior to the quake are safe. The next step would be to assess the damage (if there is any). For example, double check that all your fences are secure and that it is safe tolead your horse back into the stable if you had let her out. There has been widespread uncertainty as to what is causing the unusual phenomenon of earthquakes in Africa. Most people attribute it to inactive mineshafts filling up with water and shifting large volumes of earth, while other more extreme theories attribute recent quakes to the hypothesis that the African continent is breaking apart. One thing is certain, however, which is that you don’t want to be caught unprepared in such an emergency situation. Rather be proactive and promote your horse’s safety.

Train Your Horse in Advance Horses react to emergency situations by either fighting, freezing our fleeing. In the event of an earthquake, a horse that tries to flee may be the most panicked as it will continue to run away from the earth shaking below it. It is therefore wise to rather have such a horse safely stabled. Remember that such an experience is scary for horses too, and in her state of stress, your horse may accidentally hurt you. So keep your safety in mind throughout your dealings with the horse. Horses exhibit conditioned responses. It is therefore wise to spend time training your horse to handle emergency situations and panic as effectively as possible. It will also give you the opportunity to test and practice your emergency plan.

FEATURED IN THE LANDBOU WEEKBLAD

Artist Brings Driftwood to Life Imagine strolling along the beach, when far in the distance you spot the most magnificent equine sculpture... On closer inspection you realise that it is in fact three life-sized horses, made almost completely from driftwood, galloping through the ocean. It would simply be astonishing, right? Well, that is exactly what sculpture James Doran-Webb sets out to do, astound‌ The Englishman has been living in Cebu City in the Philippines for over 26 years. During this period, he has

trying to determine the perfect point of its lifecycle to portray. After he has gained an in-depth understanding of the animal and its movement, he starts creating a mini-version of the lifesized sculpture so that he can ensure that he understands the figure and lines well. Once he is satisfied with the outcome of the mini-sculpture, Doran-Webb and his team start assembling the iron frame of the life-sized sculpture. The last step, which consumes the most time, involves meticulously placing carefully chosen pieces of driftwood all along this iron frame. The result is grand‌ In this case, three horses comprised of more than 400 pieces of driftwood stand 1.82 m tall and weigh in at 500kg. Breathtaking. Perhaps the most incredible of it all is the fact that the horses have moveable limbs, so that they can be arranged into different poses.

collected a couple of tons of driftwood from the beaches and rivers in the area. This wood is then used for his spectacular driftwood sculptures.

Doran-Webb is renowned for his spectacular sculptures of animals in general. These three horses, specifically, were crafted as a part of the celebrations of Chinese New Year in Singapore. Doran-Webb and his team spent over six months on the project.

It takes Doran-Webb and his team more than a thousand hours to complete such sculptures. First he chooses an animal that he would like to sculp. He then studies this animal at length, 12

HaVE YOUR SaY Dear Editor, Thank you for bringing HORSE TRADING back to life. My fiancé and I have been avid readers of the magazine and it’s great that even with Jenny’s passing, the magazine still offers everything that we came to expect from it over the years. It has always fascinated me how the equestrian community works… While we are a grandly loyal and supportive bunch, it has always seemed to me that we are a greatly competitive bunch too. Competition is great during derbies and so on, but do we need to compete with other folk from the equestrian community as a hobby? Does the racer have to badmouth the polo-player and vice versa? We are fostering an environment where making the other person small so that we can look big is at the order of the day… I say we keep the competition healthy and our comments to ourselves. Regards, Werner Interesting and thought provoking letter from Werner. Has this been your experience too? Write to us and we might publish your point of view. Email editor@horsetrading.co.za with ‘Letter to the Editor’ in the subject line.

YOUNG EQUESTRIAN STARS CHRISTINA MACLEOD The Young Equestrian Star for September has had the HORSE TRADING office oohing and aahing ever since we received her pictures. Four year old Christina Macleod is just too precious! She is pictured here on her five year old pony Shadow Mac. “He is supposed to be a South African Miniature…but there is a dollop of Shetland in there somewhere,” jokes Christina’s mom, Jacqui Gray. Christina absolutely loves her pony and rides him all the time. Father Christmas delivered him on Christmas Day the year before last, and they have been inseparable since. This year, because Tibby, her elder sister is riding in SANESA inter-schools, Christina also wanted to compete. So Christina’s mom, Jacqui, asked the committee and they agreed to allow her to enter, even though she is not actually old enough. She has ridden in Equitation, Performance riding and Working riding classes in all three qualifiers as well as in the provincial final. The judges have all been very kind and patient with her. Christina rides for Glen Afric Learning Centre in Hartebeespoort and laughs the whole way through her class. This has the spectators and judges giggling as well! Her joy at riding is simply infectious.

F E AT U R E

As you can see from the photo of Christina and Tibby participating in the working riding lead rein class, Tibby is an exemplary role model and always finds a way to help her little sister. Especially since their daddy’s 15m circles are more like 18m potatoes...

Here at HORSE TRADING, we particularly adore this section of the magazine. Our spectacular group of parents who are involved and engaged with their children’s lives always send us the cutest photos and precious tales about their horsing around… We invite you to do the same and, who knows, next time we could be featuring your child as the Young Equestrian Star of the month.

www.horsetrading.co.za

It’s the perfect place to share their cute stories or tell us about their amazing feats. We want to nurture young passion and talent, so let’s give them the credit that they deserve. You can email your photos and stories through to studio@horsetrading.co.za

Andalusian Horse Getting to know our neighbours With almost 40 popular equestrian breeds in Southern Africa, the team at HORSE TRADING is delving into the differences between them. Every month we shall feature a different breed, exploring its history and tracing its temperament. That way, you will get a refresher course on the difference between an Ass and an Arabian…

Andalusian Horse History First discovered by cavemen in prehistoric times, the Andalusian horse’s ancestors have been found to adorn cave paintings on the Iberian Peninsula of southern Spain as far back as 20,000 to 30,000 BC. Experts argue that this elegant breed received its name from the Spanish province, Andalusia. With the ancestors of today’s Andalusian playing a prominent role in the service of some of history’s greatest warriors, the breed quickly became renowned for its prowess as one of the world’s premier war horses. Nobility, both in Spain itself and in the rest of Europe, praised and owned Andalusian horses.

stands between 14.5 and 16.5 hands tall. In addition to a well-rounded rump, they sport broad, long necks and defined withers. Andalusians have clean-cut legs that enables their energetic gait, while also being resilient and resistant to injury. They further boast magnificent abundant tails that are set low on their bodies. Temperament & Uses Andalusians are normally quite docile horses. Their high level of intelligence and sensitivity mean that they are very responsive and learn easily. Since they are both brave and swift, Andalusian horses are often used in bullrings and during Spanish festivals. They are also a popular choice for show jumping, dressage, reining, trailing and roping.

Their swiftness and bravery not only resulted in the breed becoming the favourite mount of the most noble, but also generated a great deal of interest from film producers all over Hollywood. Andalusians can be spotted in a myriad of movies ranging from Braveheart, Gladiator and King Arthur to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Lara Craft Tomb Raider: the Cradle of Life. physical Attributes Being a compact horse with excellent proportions, the Andalusian normally
