Welcome to the 255th edition of The Horse Trading magazine where we strive to unite our readers with a passion for horses.

E / ads@horsetrading.co.za OR studio@horsetrading.co.za

Horse Trader Magazine has Galencia Property South African Derby fever with this edition dedicated to this event which is celebrating its whopping 50th anniversary. Steeped in history, the Galencia Property South African Derby sees the crème de la crème of riders putting their horse through their paces. The mental and physical fitness of the rider and especially that of the horse makes this event so unique and thrilling for the spectators. I am a very excited for our readers to dive into this edition. We have some great articles one in particular featuring top South African show jumper Simon Hendry, who recently took silver at this year’s FEI World Jumping Challenge. We spoke to him about his latest achievements and his preparation for the upcoming Galencia Property South African Derby. We take a trip down memory lane on page 11 looking at the career of Ernest Hayward who was the very first winner of the Galencia Property South African Derby. The passion and sheer determination really stood out for me in this heart-warming article as many riders back then, like Hayward, competed locally and internationally with little to no sponsorship. We hope you enjoy this edition as much as we did putting it together for you. Deborah Gray

Minimise canine Vet costs & Maximise your pets quality of life All I hear around me from owners is that their animals have bone/joint issues along with the amount of animals developing cancer being astronomical and not overlooking the huge increase in skin allergies. Is it not strange that years ago, without the aid of all these fancy foods, one seldom heard of all these serious life restrictive symptoms? If your animals feed was supplemented, could the above ailments be minimised to a large degree? It stands to reason that the ‘dry foods’ available do not contain every Vitamin, Mineral and Amino Acid required as that would push the cost up 100 fold with the imported foods being no exception. By the law of Dept of Agriculture, all pet foods have to contain huge amounts of preservatives, then the ‘flavouring’

Golden memories of Ernest Hayward

T

he South African Derby is one of the highlights in the equestrian calendar and 50 years on memories have been made with some of the greatest riders gracing the track. Ernest Hayward was the very first rider to win the event. This is his story. Ernest Hayward’s love of riding began at the tender age of six. As a young boy his dedication to the sport was evident as he would ride 12km to the stables where Sandton City now stands. As a junior he was a consistent winner with his jumping pony, Rupert.

where he won the International Speed Event (The Stadium Cup). Following his success in England Hayward, his wife and Easter Parade went on to compete in Dublin as part of the first South African team to do so. From there they went to Belgium where Hayward placed 4th in the Puissance at Rotterdam with a wall of 6 foot 9 inches.

times in his paddock, he agreed – not shying away from a challenge. Beauheira turned out to be a difficult horse to ride, but her big heart and jumping capability more than made up for it when they won the competition. The demanding course was created by Douglas ‘Douggie’ Bunn –

It was with his 15.1 ex polo pony, Stormy, the pair became a formidable threat in the adult classes in the Transvaal region. They were always seconds ahead of their fellow competitors in speed events. Hayward was in fact one of the first riders to master the speed events - a jump-off against the clocks. In 1958 and 1959 Hayward had a stream of successes, one being his marriage to his wife Denise Taylor, but also on the track with his horse Easter Parade. The most notable win was at the 1959 Pretoria Show, where he won six out of seven possible events as well as “The Star” trophy. Later that year, the couple left the shores of Cape Town and headed for the coast of South Hampton with a mere £7 in their pockets. Over the course of four months Hayward and Easter Parade competed in a host of local English shows. On his debut performance at the Harbourne Show, Ernie won the Open Jumping Event. He then went on to win the major speed event at Maidstone. Ernest and Easter Parade’s successes qualified them to compete in the prestigious White City Show Jumping event,

Back at home, Hayward began training a new string of horses, one of which was the better known as Loch ‘n Lad. Loch ‘n Lad’s bright future was cut short as he died before he had a chance to represent his country. Not long before the 1965 Derby was to be held, the owner of Beauheira asked Hayward to jump his horse at the upcoming Derby Event. Even though Hayward only had the opportunity to practice with Beauheira several

internationally known as a British course builder – and was designed to test South African riders’ abilities against international obstacles and standards. Unlike today, Hayward carved his equestrian career with no sponsors. He trained his horses himself, and they were always novices. The sheer determination as a young lad riding his bike to the stables turned into a legend that excelled in all equestrian ventures he was a part of.

Simon Hendry gallops to success internationally The South African flag was flying high recently when Simon Hendry took silver at this year’s FEI World Jumping Challenge staged at the HRC Trakietz Equestrian Centre. Iranian rider, Davood Pourrezai, galloped to gold in an exciting three-way jumpoff against the clock in the closing competition.

relationship and complete trust with the horse.

The Final is open to Category A riders from 10 FEI regional zones and this year attracted 22 riders from 17 countries. Horse Trader Magazine got the opportunity to speak to Hendry about his achievements and his upcoming preparation for the Galencia South African Derby.

language barrier was a challenge, but with a few laughs it was easily overcome! Tel us about the horse you drew?

How does it feel to be a top FEI rider? What makes this success particularly special is that I had the privilege of producing the horse who won the competition right from the start. It’s a great feeling to have such a special 14

Tell me a little bit about your experience in the FEI comp. The venue at Bulgaria was world class with excellent facilities. I particularly enjoyed meeting all the different riders, each with their own techniques and qualities. The

One of the challenges of this competition is that you ride on a borrowed horse. I drew a lovely 11 year old, dark bay, German bred mare by Contender. She is named after the Italian Opera Soprano - Mirella Freni. She is a sporty type mare, with lots of blood, who was keen to get to the fences. The challenge with her was simply to keep her calm and relaxed, and to give her

plenty of space to the fences. How do you build a relationship with a horse in such a short time? I believe that it is vital to build trust with a horse on the ground first, before you ride. When I drew Mirella Freni I immediately went to meet her in her stable and spent some time with her. The horses were stabled full time so there were no paddocks where they could go out into during the day. I therefore took her out twice a day for a hand walk so that she could stretch her legs and relax a little. I also took over the duties of feeding and watering her, giving her a brush, and watering her down after classes. I believe spending time with her in this manner gave her the opportunity to get to know me, and vice versa.

If you are not competing with your own horse how do you train for such an event? I am fortunate in that I school and compete with a wide array of horses every day. This exposure has given me the ability to adapt to what each horse requires and develop a good feel for what suits each particular horse. What preparations have you put in place this year in the run up to the 50th Galencia South African Derby?

www.horsetrading.co.za

I will be riding Franlaren’s Principal Legionnaire. Although small he is brave and very experienced. He needs no introduction to the fences challenges the Derby poses. Therefore my focus will be on his fitness Why in your opinion is the Derby a special competition? The atmosphere at the Derby is unique. The spectator’s support of every rider and horse is simply wonderful.

as many other big shows as possible.

much looking forward to competing.

Do you have an upcoming young horse that shows a lot of promise?

Tell us more about your support group and sponsors?

I am privileged to have more than one owner with quite a few very talented young horses coming up in the grades, which I am very excited about. Simon Burn has the exciting Tack n Togs’ Casper, a young gelding

I am privileged to have friends in all of my clients, owners, riders and horses. Without their continued support I could never have gotten to where I am today. Tack ‘n Togs has been my sponsor for four years

by Catoki. He finds his job so easy and is an absolute pleasure to ride. The very handsome Tack n Togs’ Lindor is also an exciting prospect, having moved up from the very small classes to some substantial jumps quite quickly. Steve Atkinson’s Carshop’s beautiful and spunky Baccara is one to look out for in the future. The Gooderham’s Locarno Royal Classic has huge scope and has enjoyed showing it off in the young horse classes. Finally I have my own young colt imported from Holland, by Diamant de Semilly, who has just started his career and who I am very

sponsoring all my riding equipment and the latest and greatest in tack, helmets and clothing. They have been a real source of support in my career over the years. And lastly my wife, who recently gave birth to our son Matthew James, her support means the most.

How many times have you competed? This is my 5th time competing at the Derby. My first Derby I rode a thoroughbred called Walkman that I produced from the track. We jumped around the Derby twice and I was thrilled to have achieved this on him. This year will be my third time riding Franlaren’s Principal Legionnaire around the track. How do you train your horse for the challenges posed on the course? The challenges at the Derby are the formidable obstacles that the horses do not encounter at any other shows during the year. The foremost of these include the bank, dyke, and railroad crossing. It is therefore essential to ensure that the horse is familiar with those obstacles, and confident to jump them. The other challenge is the length of the course, so fitness is essential to ensure the horse is able to not only jump the final lengthy course in the championship class, but also all the qualifying classes. Finally, the atmosphere at the Derby excites the horse. It is necessary to expose them to the noises and excitement at www.horsetrading.co.za

Shine like a trophy Making sure your horse looks the part on the day of a show or competition is as important as ensuring it is fit and ready to compete. Competition day is just around the corner. You and your horse have put in the gruelling hours of training to perfect your performance. He’s fit, healthy and ready to prove his might. With days before the event attention turns to your horses overall appearance to ensure that once you enter the arena you are making a good first impression. A well-turned-out rider and horse is what a horse show is all about. An appropriately groomed horse is one that is clean, clipped and thoroughly groomed. Getting a horse ready for the show ring is not something that can be done in a few minutes. It’s a process that should start about two weeks before the competition. According to Jennifer Nunn from Tacks ‘n Togs it is advisable to wash your pony or horse a day or two before a show as this will allow for his natural coat oils to return and contribute to his all-round shine. “With regards to which shampoo to use, there are several on the market and you can get one specifically formulated for your pony’s coat and colour,” says Nunn. “Pay careful attention to getting any white markings on your pony as clean as possible.” For a well turned-out pony and horse you need to start with the basics - and that is their very own well-stocked grooming kit. Nunn advises that a grooming kit should include: - A rubber curry comb to remove dirt, loose hairs and not-so-stubborn stains. Put in the time to curry your horse every day. The more you curry, the more you bring the oils in the skin to the surface. 18

- A dandy brush to remove dust and loose hairs. - A body brush used to begin the polishing process once excess dirt, loose hairs and dust have been removed. - A sheepskin or microfibre mitt to really make the coat shine. - A mane and tail comb for a perfectly brushed silky tail. - A sponge or face brush to clean the eyes, muzzle and face. - A hoof pick used to remove manure, mud and stones from your horses hoof and contribute to an all-round hoof health. Grooming tips: Alida Stander co-owner of Hope Riding School says a copious amount of elbow grease is just one step to getting your horse show ready. “A white (grey) horse does not simply become white. It takes work. When preparing for a dressage show, we try and ensure that the coat, mane and tail is washed and spotlessly clean.” She advises that a horse should have a body clip about two weeks before the show. Body clipping makes the coat dull for a while, and you want to give it time to get its natural shine back. Three days before show trim the muzzle, bridle path, ears and the long hair on the fetlocks to prevent your horse from sporting a 5 o’ clock shadow.

Maintenance Supplement. If a horse needs a bit extra, we rather up the teff and eragrostis than give more concentrates.” About two weeks ahead of show time, turn your attention to your horse’s tail. To stimulate growth, brush the dock of your horse’s tail daily with a dandy brush. This will loosen and remove the dirt and dander that makes your horse itchy. Brushing the dock and upper part of the tail bone also increases blood flow, which stimulates growth. Just before heading out into the arena give your horse a body and face onceover with a soft, lint-free cloth. A dab of equine highlighter on the cloth can enhance your horse’s features and add a matte shine. Gently wipe the corners of the eyes, inside the ears, the curves of the nostrils and last but not least, the lips. Then it show time!

“Good quality concentrates in the amounts that suits your horse’s work load and temperament and lots of good quality eragrostis and teff goes a long way to make a good looking horse,” says Stander. “We add probiotic to their food on a daily basis, along with Royal www.horsetrading.co.za

The Rambo® Micklem Bridle – Invented by William Micklem, patented by Horseware Ireland

Known universally as the kindest and most humane bridle on the market, the Rambo Micklem Bridle has grown from strength to strength since its invention in 1992 and official introduction to the market by Horseware Ireland and following that the VERY swift acceptance of the bridle by the FEI. As the only bridle designed from the Inside Out, the Rambo®Micklem Bridle was the brainchild of Irishman William Micklem and is based on his love of

horses and understanding of their teeth and the nerves in the horses head! He disliked the discomfort caused by cranked, tight cavesson nosebands and flash nosebands which ignore the shape of the horse’s teeth, with the wide upper jaw and the nerves both on the poll and the lower part of the horses head, including the mouth. In addition the heavy lunge cavessons caused great distress to

the horses – once again because they relate to the shape of the head – not the skull. He spent years studying the shape of the skulls and began designing a lunge cavesson from the inside out – i.e. from the shape of the skull (the inside), NOT the head – and so the Rambo® Micklem bridle was born! World renowned for its effectiveness, its comfort and flexibility, the Rambo® Micklem Bridle is

comfortable and more flexible and is designed to actually fit the shape of the horse’s skull and not the outward appearance of its head. This means that the rider has more control and is more easily able to manage the horse’s movements – all while ensuring complete comfort for the horse.

headpiece is padded and shaped so that it has a large bearing surface over the poll, giving immediate direct relief. The bridle can also be used as a classical lunge cavesson by simply attaching a lunge line to the ring provided on the nose piece, PLUS it has the added value of use as a headcollar.

The Rambo®Micklem bridle takes into account all the sensitive areas of a horse’s head, teeth and nerves to ensure maximum responsiveness with little to no discomfort for the horse. The Rambo® Micklem bridle counteracts the 5 main areas of discomfort:

The Rambo® Micklem Competition Bridle includes comfortable padding across the nose, browband and cheek pieces, the D-Ring has been removed from the noseband it has a chin and throat strap guard to prevent rubbing. In addition, the Competition Bridle does not contain any clips as it is for more advanced riders with quiet hands.

1) The sensitive area around the poll; 2) The sensitive tissue inside the mouth which usually gets sandwiched between the protruding upper jaw molars on the inside and the noseband on the outside; 3) The numbing of the main motor and sensory nerve caused by tight nosebands – not only does it cause discomfort but it can also numb the nose and lips; 4) Damage to the fragile pair of bones at the end of the head and nose; 5) Excessive pressure on the tongue and bars of the mouth (when used with the bit clips) The Rambo® Micklem bridle is available in two different styles – the Rambo® Micklem Multibridle and the Rambo® Micklem Competition bridle. The Multibridle is three main pieces of equipment in one – it is a bridle (including integral noseband), a lunge cavesson and a bitless bridle. It also features a unique tongue protection system for those horses who fight the rein contact and try to put their tongues over the bit. The www.horsetrading.co.za

As one has come to expect from Horseware Ireland, the Rambo® Micklem Bridle is made using only the best quality materials, including hand finished leather and stainless steel rings. The result? The best bridle, the best lunge cavesson and the best bitless bridle you will ever own! Ensure that when purchasing a Rambo® Micklem Bridle, you are purchasing an original product – there are always those who want to try and ‘copy’ success, however, the quality, styling, finishing and the subtleties of the Rambo® Micklem Bridle can NEVER be duplicated, thus doing more harm than good to horse and rider.
