Inanda Development Cup to be an Exhilarating Day for Everyone Unless you are an old hat when it comes to Polo or clued-up with “all things equestrian”, you would never guess that the Inanda Club lays right at the heart of the richest square mile in Africa. A perfect blend of classic country character and bespoke equestrian chic, the Club has served the local equestrian community for more than 70 years. During this time, it has hosted plenty prestigious Polo events – like the popular Land Rover Africa Cup. Now, it is adding another inaugural event to this list… The Inanda Development Cup presented by Land Rover will take place on the 31st of May. Born out of the success of the aforementioned Africa Cup, the Inanda Cup promises to amaze and entertain. The Development Cup invites professional teams to enter into the tournament. This year’s rules dictate that each team must include one development player, ensuring that the tournament presents a platform for the top development players in the curtain raiser of the revered Land Rover Africa Cup 2015 on the 16th August. Land Rover, as the presenting partner, will provide the development player in the winning team with a full kit.

underprivileged and aspirant polo players to participate in the sport and possibly become professionals in this arena, the Inanda Polo Academy has successfully trained six development players, all of whom are now competing at professional level in renowned tournaments. Inanda’s star development player, Zompie Tsotetsi, hails from a development programme in the Free State. He joined the academy in 2014 as an assistant to Craig James, the Inanda Club Polo Manager, who honed his skills. Tsotetsi is now a professional player and coach at the club and is expected to up his goal handicap from 1 to 2 in the next polo season. “With all development programmes, these initiatives are only possible with the help of financial investments. The aim of the Inanda Club is to showcase development players in a tournament where their employers play with them. We hope that by starting like this, we can attract more sponsors to become involved with the development of players from underprivileged backgrounds” said Craig James, Inanda Club polo manager and professional polo player.

“Over the years, the development polo programme has provided opportunities for talented underprivileged and aspirant players to participate in the sport and flourish as true professionals. The Land Rover Africa Cup showcases not only the great sport of polo, but also very importantly, the development programme players that serve as catalysts in changing perceptions about the sport. The strong focus on developing players over the past five years has changed the face of polo from that of an elitist sport to a sport for the people. We applaud the Inanda Club for driving this transformation to make the sport more broadly accessible,” said Councillor Ruby Mathang, MMC Economic Development. Join the HORSE TRADING team at the Inanda Club for a wintery afternoon of elegance and athletic grandeur as the polo players showcase their skills on Sunday, 31st May 2015.

The Horse and the Donkey

O

nce in India, there lived a washer-man named Bheema. He had a donkey and a horse. The donkey carried clothes to the pond and back to his house. The horse carried Bheema to the market and back, occasionally. The donkey worked much harder than the horse. On a bright sunny day, Bheema was going to the pond with donkey. He took the horse along to give it a drink of water. The donkey was carrying a heavy load of clothes. The horse was carrying nothing. The load was unusually heavy and the donkey’s back was hurting. When the pain became unbearable the donkey said to the horse, “This

load is too much for me, brother! Please take some of this load on your back.”

more careful,” thought the washer man. Then he gave some water to the donkey. The donkey felt better now.

The horse replied some what rudely, “Eh! Why should I? I am here only to carry our master to the market.” The proud horse continued on his way. It was getting hotter as the day went on. The donkey felt totally exhausted. He was almost dragging himself. “Humph! Humph!” The donkey tried to move. He just could not. The poor donkey collapsed to the ground. “Oh! What has happened to the poor donkey?” thought the washer man.

The washer-man then picked up the bundle of clothes off the back of the donkey and placed it on the horse’s back. “Umf! Umf! Came the sound from the horse’s mouth. “I should have helped the donkey. I made a mistake. I should have taken half the load when the donkey requested me. Now I realise sharing a burden is easier.” The horse carried the heavy load of clothes for the remaining distance. There after both the donkey and the horse lived together.

Immediately he took the load off the donkey. “Indeed the load is really very heavy. I should have been little

Necessary Probiotics

T

he word ‘Probiotics’ means ‘for life’ and has been used for centuries as a natural health promoter, which exerts health effects beyond inherent basic nutrition. Vast research has been conducted, where Probiotics has emerged as a valuable tool in both human and veterinary medicine, used rather as a preventative medicine than as a disease therapy. True Probiotics require more than just a few lactic acid bacteria or yeast cultures as its contents, but should rather contain many strains of various beneficial living microorganisms. Products should be well researched before choosing an ‘off the shelf’ Probiotic. Related products can contain Saccharomyces culture (bakers yeast), though often packaged live, the survivability of these culture are very short and should be a major factor to consider, before selecting a specific Probiotic product. Broad spectrum antibiotics, certain anti-parasitic chemicals, Chlorine 14

content in drinking water and stress to a large degree, devastate the beneficial microbial gut population, thus resulting in detrimental health effects to both humans and animals alike. Recent findings prove that Probiotics stimulate immunity, creating many more areas of potential benefit and not only have the affect to balance gut flora, but can also positively influence diseases which occur in tissues other than the intestinal tract. Scientific evidence suggests that Probiotic supplementation will: Stablise the digestive system, thereby reducing the risk of colic’s, laminitis and gastric ulceration. Improved digestion, resulting in quicker weight gain, maintenance and improved weight recovery after strenuous activity.

Increase feed conversion efficiency by up to 24%, enhancing growth, general health and well being. Increase the availability of nutrients, thereby fully utilising the intake of nutrients and enhancing the immunity system enabling it to better fight off disease. Probiotic supplementation is recommended for daily use, by the World Health Organization for all living creatures. Research has further shown that to reap the maximum benefit of animal supplementation, it should be done on a consistent basis, thus added to the feed as a long term program. In periods of high stress or antibiotic use, daily doses could be doubled up, with the concept being to thereby replace destroyed beneficial bacteria on a day to day basis.

Promising South African Riders Jet Off to Olympics

C

ome on. Admit it… Everyone loves a good success story! When you hear of strongspirited people who smile in the face of challenge and finally, against all odds, achieve things most of us would never even dare to dream of, you simply get goosebumps. I got a whole lot more than goosebumps (think teary-eyed) when I came across this sensational and inspiration story from the team at Shumbashaba. In case you are not familiar with their exceptional work, let’s put you in the picture (and for those who are familiar with these everyday heros, humour me)… Shumbashaba is a not-for-profit community organisation that focusses on how horses can positively impact people and help to change lives for the better. A multifaceted organisation, Shumbashaba’s Horses Helping People programmes reach out and touch the lives of a great many people, the majority of whom come from Diepsloot. The main neighbouring township on the northern outskirts of Johannesburg, Diepsloot is home to some 250,000 people. The organisation aims to build a sense of self-worth and purpose in all

20

people who participate in their programmes. Their therapeutic riding and equine assisted growth and personal development programme, supporting people with disability and youth at risk from Diepsloot, has gained high acclaim over the years, winning numerous local and international awards. Both people with and without disabilities are invited to use the services of Shumbashaba. The income earned from private feepaying clients contributes greatly towards running the outreach programmes for participants who cannot afford it. The rest of the funds are gathered through fundraising initiatives and the donations of kind private individuals and organisations across the country. It is with one of these outreach programmes that everything started for Maria Matlala and Themba Sibiya. When they mustered up the courage to climb onto a horse for the first time ever on 29 January 2013, no one could have predicted that these two would be setting off to the Special Olympic World Summer Games in 2015.

Despite being born with intellectual disabilities and into poverty, Themba and Maria - like all young people - have a dream to achieve their potential, to be recognised and to succeed. They are two young people whose lives have been fired up with hope. However, forming a part of one of the most marginalised groups in the world (that of people with disabilities), and not having access to therapy and development through sport or other recreational opportunities as a result of their poverty, Themba and Maria’s dreams seemed doomed to remain merely fantasy. But, as members of the Bona Lesedi Day Care Centre for people with disabilities, Themba and Maria’s lives took an unexpected turn when they joined the therapeutic riding programme at Shumbashaba. They were provided with the opportunity to not only develop physical fitness, improve motor skills, heighten self-confidence and grow a more positive self-image. In addition, they also received something way beyond their expectations - an opportunity to represent South Africa in equestrian sport at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015.

F E AT U R E

Meeting and learning to ride horses has equipped them with the necessary horsemanship skills and has provided them with the opportunity to participate in sporting events co-hosted by Shumbashaba and Special Olympics S.A. (two organisations that share the same belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn to enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sport). The opportunity to progress from riding as a therapy to riding as a sport was presented when Shumbashaba and the Gauteng Branch of Special Olympics S.A. (S.O.S.A.) co-hosted several Unified Sports Days offering four different sporting codes – equestrian, bocce, soccer and volleyball – to sportsmen and women both with and without disabilities. As

www.horsetrading.co.za

a result of this, S.O.S.A. was granted a quota of two riders, one male and one female, to join the South African team participating in the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Considering that Themba and Maria both participated in these Unified Sports Days, they were invited to attend a Special Olympics S.A. Advancement Event that was held last year. At this Advancement Event, Themba and Maria again demonstrated their sheer gumption and potential. Both athletes were selected to advance to join the team flying off to Los Angeles in the USA to participate in the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 - an event which draws the world’s attention to the talents and capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities. Themba and Maria will join the more than 7000 Special Olympics athletes from

170 nations who will compete in 21 Olympic-type sports.

The team at HORSE TRADING wishes Themba and Maria the best of luck – and we know that you will come home having gained invaluable experience. We’ll also be keeping a close eye on the games, so be sure to watch this space for a report on Themba and Maria’s life-changing journey.
