Nutritional Advice Line (011)468 1834 Equine Gastric ulcer syndrome is a debilitating condition which has been increasingly recognised in recent years as the reason for poor performance in competition horses. The high occurrence of gastric ulcers can be due to high concentrates/ low roughage diets and high stress levels set on by intensive exercise and travel. Feeding a supplement which neutralizes the acids and soothes and protects the stomach lining will help to maintain optimum gut health and function resulting in maximum feed absorption and optimal performance. FROM THE EDITOR

GET IN TOUCH

Welcome to the 256th edition of The Horse Trading magazine where we strive to unite our readers with a passion for horses.

E / ads@horsetrading.co.za OR studio@horsetrading.co.za

This month I met someone who has inspired me to look at life very differently. Often we get bogged down with negative stories but this one will lift your spirits and fill the soul with hope. I was at the launch of the new Steyn City Equestrian Centre when I first saw the vivacious Tamsin who was the guest of honour. Tamsin suffers from cerebral palsy and is hoping to qualify for the Rio 2016 Paralympics in Dressage. I knew I had to meet her. When I met Tamsin you are immediately drawn in by her contagious smile and she oozes positive energy. I left the interview with so much optimism and even with a huge smile on my face! She is one determined 16-year-old but has a gentle soul that you can’t help but fall in love with. She has an amazing story to tell and her journey to success has only begun. Her story is on page 22. So if you are ever feeling like you can’t do anything, which I must admit I am guilty of too, read her story and find that inner strength (that we all have) and push through to achieve your goals. I hope you are as inspired as I am. Enjoy Deborah Gray

ANIMALS AND AMINO ACIDS

A

ll animals require Amino Acids, in fact horses require 21 Amino Acids and of those 9 (nonessential) are provided for by the horse itself, whilst the 12 Amino’s (essential) are not created by the horse and need some outside help. A small amount of essential Amino Acids will be obtained from well balanced concentrates and good quality grass and/or supplementation. South Africa does not have as nutritious grass as many other horse countries and common sense tells us that due to cost, horse feed will not contain all the needed Amino’s in the maximum amounts required. Amino Acids also act as a chain reaction, so unless all 12 essential Aminos’s are present, it means nothing, with zero positive nutritional effect.

8

Amino Acids are the ‘building blocks’ of protein and are essential for horses to optimize, synthesize and utilize their protein intake to:

Optimize energy levels Assisted prevention of muscle stiffness, spasms & tying-up Improved food utilisation Increased mass & muscle development (builds ‘top line’) Reduced water loss – nitrogen loss in sweat Assisted lactation & reproduction in brood mares Promotes growth & strong bone Improved hoof quality and growth

We also need to ask ourselves if it is indeed fair to ask all that we do from our competition horses if we do not supply them the tools to preform at top level. All the above information was taken from published reports compiled by the USA National Research Council on nutrient requirements for horses. Written by: L.D Delaney Promix Animal Supplements www.promixsupplements.com

Again feed labels need to be scrutinized for the Amino content and in what quantities, or call the manufactures and enquire.

Top-notch Equestrian Centre unveiled It was one of the coldest and wettest weekends Gauteng had seen in months, but that didn’t stop the equine community from attending the glamorous launch of the Steyn City Equestrian Centre.

With gloomy clouds hovering over the Steyn City Golf Estate and temperatures dipping close to single digits, spirits were high as guests, which included the likes of South African Olympian Gonda Betrix, attending the Festival of Flair held on the 5th of September at the newly built Steyn City Equestrian Centre were treated to a day of horse jumping, the Lippizaners, BMW motor show, a fashion show and gourmet food.

“I’ve had the opportunity to see what other facilities have done wrong, and to make sure we don’t replicate the mistakes,” he says. To this end, he has worked closely with Bryan Charters of Steyn City Architecture and Design (SCAD) to ensure the elements of the very best stables were incorporated into the centre. “The centre’s carefully thought out features contribute to a facility that is unmatched elsewhere in South Africa. For example, stables measure 4m x 4m rather than the usual 3.5m x 3.5m, creating an airy environment that protects horses from heat and deters irritants like flies. Ventilation is enhanced through a high roof, which also houses a coop to improve air flow.

But everyone was there to admire the one-of-a-kind equestrian centre boasting world class features and facilities designed to be superlative in every way. The “rustic farmhouse” design with cracked beams and stoke bricks is sophisticated but warm and welcoming. At the entrance is a towering 6m sculpture of a stallion’s head weighing over 10 tons. But it is what is inside that really counts. Former Springbok showjumper, Johan Lotter, who manages the centre, reveals that he and his team travelled extensively both locally and in Europe to view the best examples of stable yards then set to work incorporating elements from these into the centre. As a result, Steyn City’s facilities feature cutting edge technology and architecture, putting them in a league of their own.

10

www.horsetrading.co.za

Double-sided stable doors and rubber non-slip surfaces add a practical element, as does the fact that the 36 stables are designed to be inward facing, while an interior atrium ensures that owners can visit their horses even during rainy and windy conditions.

There is also a feed storage room, along with outstanding accommodation for up to six groomsmen. The centre includes an automated horse walker, which ensures that the horses will be exercised every day and helps them remain in peak condition. “It’s our hope that Steyn City’s equestrian centre becomes known as the premium facility in the country – we’ve put into practice all the lessons learnt throughout our careers working with horses to create an experience second to none,” Lotter promises.

The stables are complemented by four wash bays (all of which are located internally), fitted with hoses and non-slip surfaces. A medical room has been established as an area where ailing horses can receive treatment, while a laundry features an industrial washing machine. There is also a feed storage room, along with outstanding accommodation for up to six groomsmen. The centre includes an automated horse walker, which ensures that the horses will be exercised every day and helps them remain in peak condition. However, what excites Lotter most is the allweather arena at 95m x 60m, the largest of its kind in South Africa which features a prepared surface, so that it can be used even in adverse weather conditions. “This facility allows us to host arena polo games, a trend which is taking the equestrian world by storm,” Lotter enthuses. The centre further offers an all-weather surface in the lunging arena.established as an area where ailing horses can receive treatment, while a laundry features an industrial washing machine.

Summer itch not so sweet As we head into summer now is the time to watch out for signs of sweet itch.

Sweet itch in horses, also known as pruritus, is the unpleasant sensation that leads horses to bite, scratch or rub at their skin. Sweet itch caused by midges typically appears in spring and settles down to virtually disappear during the winter.

with fly avoidance playing a huge role in reducing clinical signs. Other soothing solutions include using emollient shampoos, solutions and sprays will help the skin from drying out and can be used to great effect.

While some breeds are more prone to sweet itch than others, the peak age of onset for sweet itch is about four years and it can first appear in much older horses.

Cold water hosing and ice packs applied to the irritated areas can also lead to an improvement. Witch hazel is also recognised as having a nonspecific cooling effect on itchy skin.

The mighty midge Midges are small and like many insects that feed on blood. Their mouthparts are too short to probe for a blood vessel, so they have to chew their way through the tough outer layers of the skin. To assist their efforts they secrete saliva containing a mixture of enzymes that digest and soften the skin tissue as well as “vasodilators” to encourage extra blood to flow to the site of the bite and several factors that will prevent the blood clotting.

Shampoos containing colloidal oatmeal and oils such as borage, tea tree, evening primrose and aloe vera can also have palliative effects. Sulphur is one of the oldest anti-pruritic products available and has positive benefits in relieving the itch.

Prevention • • • • • •

During spring and summer spray the horse with a good midge repellent Clean water troughs regularly Stable your horse between 4pm and 8am when midges are most active Use insect proof mesh on doors and windows Strong ceiling fans will prevent the m i d g e s from flying Keep your horse covered with an ear to tail rug

A small pool of blood forms just under the skin surface and is then sucked up by the midges. The saliva that is injected into the skin contains a foreign protein which causes this nasty irritation.

Treatment Skin scrapings are useful in many cases, enabling the vet to check for mites. Once diagnosed a treatment regime can be prescribed using a combination of medicines to treat the various different causes of the condition. It is vital that the treatment combats the cause of the pruritus, as well as offering the horse relief from the itch.Topical treatments can help soothe these horses,

Prevention through feed Although there is no clinical research available, anecdotal evidence from owners of horses suffering from sweet itch suggests feed supplements can help.

Choose

• • •

Protein rich foods feeds should be avoided. Therefore fresh green grass in spring is super rich in protein and it is advisable to restrict grazing on such pastures to less than 3 hours per day and offer plenty of good quality hay in a well sized enclosure instead. Silage, lucerne hay and lupins are very rich in protein so should not be fed at all. Oats are a great healthy feed for horses but are also rich in protein and should better be substituted by cooked barley. Feeds high in sugars, prefer those without added molasses.

Avoid • Adding small amounts (about a quarter teaspoon) of black caraway seeds (or oil) and Lapacho Bark tea to the feed can help to discourage insects. • A feed that is rich in Vitamin B or add a good quality natural vitamin B supplement. The Vitamin B complex is important for healthy skin and the immune system by nourishing the good gut bacteria. • Omega 3 fatty acids can help prevent an immune system over-reaction. • Carrots (about 1kg/day for an adult horse) deliver carotene which also helps to improve skin condition.

Signs of sweet itch • • • • •

www.horsetrading.co.za

Mild to severe itching and rubbing, usually along the mane, back and tail Loss of tail and mane hair Bald patches, which can look ugly and grey due to permanent hair loss and skin damage Areas of sore, open, broken skin, which tend to bleed In some cases, itching along the legs and under the belly

Hanne’s Story Up until 12 years ago I was working as an account manager for an IT company, enjoying a great career. Then my daughter Pernille became seriously ill with Multiple Sclerosis. Horse riding helped her tremendously and the Make a Wish Foundation gave Pernille a horse. My choice was to either run beside her or ride with her, so I bought a horse as well.

classes and he wanted to pass his knowledge on to 10 people. In order to apply for one of the 10 spots on that team, you had to do all the Access Consciousness core classes, so I went home and signed up for all the classes for Pernille and I, knowing that this was exactly what I had been searching for.

Then one day I was sitting waiting while Pernille was having a treatment at a therapist and my eyes fell on a book called “Talk to the animals” by Gary Douglas. I grabbed it and started reading. I found out that Gary was 70 years old and had been working with horses as a horse whisperer his whole life. He had just declared that he was not going to do anymore www.horsetrading.co.za

17+18 October

Beaulieu, We got 2 of the 10 spots Kyalami, Gauteng

and went to Texas to meet Gary Douglas. Since then Pernille and I have been working with horses in different ways. I am doing Conscious Horse, Conscious Rider classes in Denmark and around the world. Some of them I facilitate together with Suzy Godsey from California - most of them I have been doing on my own. I also work in the Royal Stable here in Denmark at least one day a week. I am 50 years old and live with 1 of my 3 kids (30, 21 and 19) here in Denmark in a little village.

I was fit and strong, while Pernille was thin and very weak with almost no muscle or coordination in her body. I was riding with a saddle and bridle, meanwhile Pernille was riding bare back with only a halter. I was doing all “the right” things to control/ride a horse, but she was doing soooooo much better than I. Pernille’s horse was doing exactly as she wanted him to and I was struggling to keep up. So one day I asked her “How are you doing that?” she answered “I just talk to him” and all of a sudden it became so clear to me how she was communicating with her horse.

How can we contribute to each other - man and horse?

Scan the QR code for more information and to join the event on Facebook!

My daughter, who started the whole journey has, with the access tools and the horse, progressed from a wheelchair - she couldn’t feel her legs and her body was held up by a body cast. She could hardly see, hear or talk, to now where she is almost normal, she walks, talks, hears, sees and her spine is almost straight. Incidentally, we just got back from climbing Mont Blanc. Pernille followed her brothers and I up the mountain, until 1000 meters from the top! How does it get any better than that? “I took Conscious Horse Conscious Rider with Hanne in Ireland. The space she allowed me to be with my horses and the questions asked have produced results far beyond where I had expected and where I had been willing to go. Thank you Hanne and Pernille.” // Eileen, Ireland

Paralympic dream within reach Paralympian dressage hopeful Tamsin Mbathsa-Bouwer’s story is one of courage and sheer determination that will leave you in awe. Her infectious smile and positive outlook on life is inspiring. This is her story. didn’t believe in my abilities,” she explains. For example she was told she would never be able to canter because she has not pelvic movement. And yet she mastered the skill.

Tamsin’s start in life was less than ideal. Born premature and abandoned at three months, life for Tamsin could have played out very differently. But in swooped her adoptive parents and she had a family that she could call her own. But life of hard knocks kept coming and she was diagnosed with cerebal palsy and told she would never walk again. Refusing to accept her fate and determined to treat her as equally as her able bodied siblings, Tamsin’s mother, a horse lover herself, introduced Tamsin to horse riding from the age of four. “I grew up with horses, and despite my disability I was very much at ease around horses and riding them,” says Tamsin. “I don’t have full strength in my lower legs and my left side in particularly, but riding horses has definitely enabled me to strengthen my legs and core muscles and live a normal life,” she explains. Soon Tamsin was jumping with all the abled body children in the yard. It is in the saddle where she came alive.

It was her “big match temperament” that caught the eye of Kate Laird. “When I first met Tamsin I was hosting a coaching course and Tamsin was one of the riders. “Despite being thrown off the horse three times, she got right back on with a smile on her face and was determined to prove her might,” says Kate. She immediately spotted the competitive nature Tamsin had and from there she took Tamsin under her wing and the decision was made to change her focus to dressage.

“Tamsin has a very cool nature, but very driven which is why she excels in dressage. You have to be very calm when competing yet have a killer instinct, and Tamsin is all of that and more,” says Laird. “She is a pleasure to train because she is disciplined, organised and

always enthusiastic.” In preparation for the Rio 2016 Paralympics Tamsin will be utilising the new Steyn City Equestrian Centre offering world-class training facilities. In addition, she will be travelling to Belgium shortly to train with the legendary Philippa JohnsonDwyer winner of two gold medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. Tamsin will also be competing in Europe to qualify for the Rio 2016 Paralympics (category: Grade 1B Dressage). If she qualifies she will be the youngest and the first black Paralympian dressage horse rider. At just 16 years of age, Tamsin has had to overcome immense adversity, and has done so with her head held high and with an

infectious smile. She destined for success, even more so than what she has gained so far.

Tamsin we salute you!

“When I am riding, I feel like I am one with the horse,” says Tamsin. But she doesn’t want people to feel sorry for her and it’s this sheer determination to beat the odds and succeed and prove her abilities that have made her the success that she is today. “When I am in the saddle you can’t see my disability. I feel like I can do anything. And yet so many people 22
