The Horseware Story ®

inness

Tom MacGu

Horseware® started with a small team, in a small town in Ireland in 1985. After months of research and hand-stitching the prototype of the now iconic Rambo® Original was born, setting the standard for modern blanket design. Since then we have grown to become the world’s most trusted producer of horse blankets. Today, our Rambo® range is still made in the same town in Ireland under Tom MacGuinness’s watchful eye and with the same attention to detail and high quality material that we prided ourselves on in 1985. We are constantly striving to produce the best we can and have grown into a leading manufacturer of clothing for horses and riders. We never stop evolving; we’re always seeking out untrodden paths, pushing boundaries and finding new challenges. We believe that because we create, we innovate. And through innovation we aim to make a difference to the lives of you and your horses.

How to make a blanket for life A good quality winter turnout can seem like an extravagance, but in the long term it’s an investment that will keep your horse warm and dry through many harsh winters and ensure your peace of mind when you hear the rain hammering on the roof at night.

More warmth, less weight. Some of the best ideas are so obvious.

Researching heat loss in horses, we found that in a standard blanket the majority of heat is lost from the back and hip areas. To combat this, we developed Rambo® Vari-Layer: a layered blanket with increased fiberfill across these key areas that wraps closely around your horse, trapping more heat with less weight. As with all our Rambo® turnouts, the Supreme with VariLayer is waterproof and breathable and is made from our toughest 1000D ballistic nylon outer, with thermobonded fiberfill and antistatic and antibacterial lining. It comes with our Surefit neck design, front and back leg arches, a wipe clean tail cord and a detachable hood as standard.

Rhino: for tough cookies The Rhino® features unique barrier technology offering double protection for your horse. Unlike the conventional approach, where the waterproof coating is applied directly to the outer layer, in Rhino® the protective barrier is placed underneath, so that even if the outer fabric is damaged, the inner waterproof and breathable barrier remains intact. The Rhino® Wug’s high cut neck design gives a snug fit that eliminates wither pressure and it comes with front leg arches as standard.

The Horseware® liner can be attached to most of our blankets. A Velcro loop attachment around the neck area and clips on the back corner of the outer blanket prevent the liner from slipping. A simple system, it gives your blanket superior insulation properties without the need for two separate blankets and can be easily washed at home in a domestic washing machine. Liners are available in 100g: $65, 200g: $70, 300g: $80 and 400g fill: $85.

A better way forward

Developed over fifteen years by BHS fellow, international coach, author and renowned horseman William Micklem, the Rambo® Micklem Bridle has changed the way we think about bridling. Designed to comfortably fit the shape of your horse’s skull, it avoids pressure on sensitive areas such as the facial nerves, cheek bones, the inside of the cheeks and fragile nosebones.

“Last year my horse Rowan was diagnosed with Navicular Syndrome. At 16 years old, I was told by vets that the hope of his returning to full work was slim and that retirement was the likely outcome. Having owned him for 10 years, I wasn’t ready to give up and researched various options to try and make him more comfortable, one of which was purchasing a pair of your Ice-Vibe boots. I use them 20 minutes every day and with a combination of remedial farriery, managing his workload and correct feeding, my gorgeous boy is sound and enjoying life. We’ve been schooling, hacking and jumping, so thankfully retirement seems a way away again! My equine

ICE-VIBE C I R C U L AT I O N T H E R A P Y

The story so far As horse owners, we know how hard it is to keep horses sound. No matter how hard we try, they so often end up on the sidelines. Louisa Williams spent a lifetime working in the racing industry: riding, training and caring for delicate thoroughbreds before developing the award winning Ice-Vibe boots.

s

Ice-Vibes are rechargeable vibrating boots that help to boost circulation in horse’s legs. Combining the effects of cooling and massage therapy, they effectively treat strains, ligament and tendon damage by stimulating the lymph system to remove soreness and swelling as well as improving circulation. Everyday wear and tear on joints can be managed with daily use of the boots, and rehabilitation through injury can be achieved more effectively. We continue to improve and develop our Ice-Vibe range and strive to make Ice-Vibe boots as easy to use and as effective as possible so that riders in every discipline, at every level can take the greatest care of their horse’s legs. Ice-Vibe developed and has grown from our love of horses. It’s a product for everyone who knows there is a better way to care for their horses. “Although technological advances have been slow to impact the equestrian world, IceVibe boots are bucking this trend and will quickly make regular ice boots a thing of the past. I’ve been using the Ice-Vibe boots and our horses’ legs have never been better following strenuous workouts. I couldn’t be happier with them.” Doug Payne, International Event Rider

Top tips for fitting your Horseware® blanket Your hand should fit comfortably between the neck and shoulder areas and the blanket. If it’s too tight it could cause discomfort and rubbing. If the blanket extends beyond the top of the tail the blanket may be too big. If the blanket does not reach the top of the tail it may be too small. Examine the neck and shoulder area for fit before making a decision to choose a different size. Make sure the tail is lifted over the fillet strap and that the strap is securely attached on both sides to prevent the blanket from blowing forwards. Where possible pull the tail through the strapping on the inside of the tail flap. The trigger clips on the V-Front closure system should always be closed with the clasp facing inwards. Belly surcingles should be adjusted to allow a hand width between straps and belly. When closing the surcingles on a blanket, secure the middle one first, then cross over the two outer surcingles. Horseware® use two or three cross surcingles on all our blankets, except for our coolers and the following products that use three straight surcingles: Rambo® Optimo, Amigo® Bug Buster™.

30

Keep in mind that the neck on the Rambo® Wug is a higher fit, so the neck and chest areas will fit more closely.

How to fit your HorsewareÂŽ blanket The ďŹ t of your blanket is extremely important to ensure the comfort of your horse, to prevent rubbing and slipping. As horses of the same height at the wither come in variety of shapes and sizes, it is useful to take certain measurements of your horse. Using a soft measuring tape, measure from (A) at the center point of the chest, across the point of the shoulder and to the point (B) at the center of the tail. When you have the measurement, remove 10cm (4 inches) and choose your horse’s size from the table to the left.

Bear in mind that every horse is different and that you may need to consider an XL blanket if you horse is particularly strongly built, or V-Front closure if your horse has a very deep neck.
