FOODIES and the Local Food and Drink Guide 2018/19 Four fabulous weeks of foodie fun and frolics begin here. This year’s Horsham District Food and Drink Guide and Festival, contained within, are brought to you by Horsham District Council and Horsham District Foodies. Businesses from our celebrated food and drink sector are showcased here as part of a brilliant district wide foodie family. We are all Horsham District Foodies and have a part to play in producing, utilising and enjoying the fantastic fayre provided by this wonderful rural neighbourhood we live in. Not only that, the Horsham District is a fabulous place to visit and stay and Horsham District Council is promoting the District to tourists using the branding you see above and throughout this Guide. Please support our Food and Drink businesses by paying them a visit and partaking in their offers and events. This year’s Festival starts with the Big Nibble on 1 and 2 September and continues until the end of September, with our wonderful market towns providing their own offers, including the stunning Steyning section of the Guide with mountains of offers and events, plus Henfield’s fun sports and foodie day halfway through the month…but don’t forget to keep hold of your Foodie Guide for the rest of the year, as you never know when you will need it!

Every year we support a Festival Charity and this year it is to be St Barnabas House. Probably a name well known to all of you, we are honoured that they are part of the Festival and hope to see you at some of the Breakfast/Lunch/Pizza/ Scone events to help raise a hefty donation to this much-loved charity. The lunch or dinner/pizza venues will be offering a special charity dish for the Festival period, and if chosen they will donate £1 to our charity. 1st September 2018 Event: Judging of the Best Food Theme Shop Window Competition – 11am. The Steyning & District Business Chamber has kindly sponsored prizes for this competition. Our Judge is Leigh Chambers, a great friend of Steyning and District. He has been the chief organiser for the Horsham Food and Drink Festival for many years and just recently seconded to another Council position but retaining a “soft spot” for the Festival. Two competition categories, one for Foodie Shops and one for Non Foodie. Last year the bears had it, with a winning Winnie the Pooh and the Story of Honey display at Cobblestone Tea House (Foodie section) and a Teddy Bears Tea Party at Smiffy Bears (non-Foodie section). Who will be our champions this year? Do come and admire all the windows and the hard work that goes into producing them.

1st September 2018 – 2.30pm - The Steyning Centre The Steyning Horticultural Society was founded in 1928 and has been active in the town, with the exception of the World War II suspension from 1940 to 1945, until the present day. The flower shows were major events in the early years and became an important part of the town’s entertainment. Nowadays, with gardening being a popular hobby for many, these shows are still a major draw. Come and admire the flowers, fruit and vegetables of Autumn.

See where breweries, malt houses, inns and public houses were situated in the past and whether we can find any traces of them today. The Chequer Inn, The Norfolk Arms, The Star and The White Horse are fortunately still with us. Here is your chance to see and hear some of their history. To revive you after the walk has finished, all attendees will receive a White Horse voucher entitling them to purchase tea or coffee and a piece of cake for the special price of £5 (usually £7).
