Introduction Leading up to the Horsham District Year of Culture we asked people what culture meant to them; from musicians, to café owners, from photographers to broom makers, from beatboxers to vicars and everybody in between; we asked them all and no two people came up with exactly the same definition. Culture is diverse, personal, collective, emotional, symbolic but very real. It’s shaped by people, the past, landscape, language, beliefs, morals, objects, customs, similarities and differences; it’s what defines us and makes us who we are. Within the Horsham District you can find world-class musicians, multimillion-selling authors, video games developers and incredibly high-profile actors and artists. We have independent brewers holding barnstorming music nights, digital creatives taking their work across the world, a heritage spanning 5,000 years, world renowned wine producers, sculptors and photographers. There’s a hidden well of talent and quality which is sometimes unexpected and often overlooked. The Year of Culture 2019 is a chance to discover, recognise and above all celebrate the wonderful and amazing things and people we have in the area and begin to put the Horsham District on the cultural map and gain the recognition it deserves. This programme gives you just a taster and flavour of what’s planned for the first half of 2019 from January to June – our second programme covering July to December coming soon. Some events are free, others paid for and a few are ongoing events and projects. Some are small with an audience of 12 and others will be big with audiences of 600 or more – check online for details. We hope you take the chance in 2019 to explore the District and discover what a wonderful place it is.

Welcome from our Patron When I moved here from Glasgow nearly five years ago I expected a quiet life. Not a bit of it! I soon discovered that just in my own small town there were over 30 book groups, a film club, concerts, lectures and lots of events organised by our wonderful local bookshop. But maybe I’ve remained unaware of what else goes on in other parts of the district. That’s all changing now that I’ve become the Patron of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. This project is a wonderful way of highlighting what’s already happening in the area, as well as giving groups and communities the chance to do something extra. There are going to be so many opportunities for people not just to watch and listen but to perform and contribute themselves – sometimes in new and unfamiliar areas: I’m trying to decide whether I should enter the comedy competition or offer myself up for the wheelbarrow race. There’s so much in this programme, both here and on the website www.hdculture2019.co.uk that I’ve found it hard to choose my favourites. I know I’ll enjoy Steyning Book Lovers’ Week and the promenade theatre piece, A Norman’s Tale, in Bramber. I’m also interested to see what sort of 5-minute films residents will come up with for the region’s first ever Film Festival. And the writing and sculptural project at Warnham Nature Reserve is definitely tempting me.
I hope residents will really involve themselves in the Year of Culture and tell all their friends what’s going on, so that we can welcome more people to the area and show off just how much we have to offer. JULIA DONALDSON MBE Author of The Gruffalo Patron of Horsham District Year of Culture 2019

Woods Mill Voted by imes County T readers
Woods Mill was originally a flour mill for the local area, with records dating back to the Norman Conquest. You can still see the Old Miller’s House which now houses the Sussex Wildlife Trust team, and the Victorian waterwheel. There are also some unusual ancient stones in the woodland. The provenance of these is unknown but they do bring a certain atmosphere to the woods!
Visitors are more than welcome to this site which is free to visit and open all year with a car park. The site is 47 acres and you’ll stroll past the old ponds and lake, onto the ancient woodland. There are streams and waterways leading to wild hedgerows and wonderfully untamed meadows. This year and the Year of Culture are particularly important dates for Woods Mill, as the nature reserve celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The celebrations include wildlife and bird walks, summer butterfly and dragonfly events, moth trapping and bat nights to name just a few! These will all be free to attend thanks to support from the Scottish Power Foundation.
Woods Mill is located on Shoreham Road, Henfield, BN5 9SD

North Horsham motte and bailey Did you know there are the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle in North Horsham?
are located north of Littlehaven. They are preserved by Horsham Green Gym, an independent volunteer conservation group, who often visit the site to carry out maintenance work.
Motte and bailey castles were strategic strongholds during military action, protecting the local area surrounding them. Each one comprised a mound of earth, the motte, topped by a stone or timber tower. The bailey was an open area where the soldiers lived, enclosed by a wooden defensive fence, a palisade.
Looking at the earthworks which remain, the bailey area of the North Horsham motte and bailey was to the west of the motte. The courtyard was approximately 25 – 55 metres wide and 75 metres long. The bailey was surrounded by a defensive ditch about seven metres wide which took water from the old stream. The entrance to the castle looks as though it was on the south side, where there is a causeway.
The motte and bailey in Horsham is thought to date from the late 11th century and is Horsham’s only scheduled monument, protected by law. The earthworks from the motte and bailey remain today and

It is thought the stream was used to create a marsh area around the motte and bailey to strengthen its’ defence.

In addition, the Horsham motte and bailey had a broad moat around it, averaging 10 metres across. Today, some of the moat is used by Chennells Brook, the remainder is now dry. This adaption of the motte and bailey into a moated site is thought to be quite rare. If you visit the North Horsham site the ditches around the motte and bailey sections can be seen easily, however it is more difficult to make out the remains of the castle. The motte and bailey is North of Chennells Brook Farm in North Horsham and forms part of the Riverside Walk which is a rather lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Henfield & District Festival 2019 The Henfield Community Partnership is holding the Henfield & District Festival with a jam packed 12 months of different events for all the family. The Henfield & District Festival kicks off right at the start of 2019 in January, with Cinderella and a visit from BBC R4’s Any Questions chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby! A photographic exhibition in St Peter's Church takes place during January. This will contrast how workers' lives have changed in the last 100 years. We step into February with an audience with Simon Nye, a celebrated and prolific local author, known for writing Men Behaving Badly and more recently, the screenwriter for The Durrells. The Festival continues into April as the village celebrates St George’s Day with an evening including a live Ceilidh band. May celebrates ‘All Things Outdoors’ – a range of activities for lovers of the countryside and nature. There will be guided walking tours and opportunities to get up early and experience the dawn chorus or stay up late and enjoy the dusk chorus. The annual traditional Beating the Bounds will also take place in Shermanbury. The summer sees the 20th anniversary of Henfield's delightful and ever popular Gardens and Arts Festival. During this festival, local gardens are open to the public, and music and art can be found in and around the village. Taking us into the middle of summer, the Rude Mechanicals will be performing at Sussex Prairie Gardens just outside of Henfield.

Cobblestone Walk Steyning
Voted by imes County T rs e d a re
One of the Year of Culture Hidden Gems is Cobblestone Walk in Steyning, an historic shopping arcade.
FEBRUARY
Hidden behind the clock tower and accessed from Steyning High Street, you walk down the tiny entrance way then it opens out into a courtyard, with parts dating back to 16th century. Cobblestone Walk used to be home to the village bakery and the small timber cottage was the Steyning Tea House. The Steyning Tea House became The Cobblestone Tea House and we’d recommend a hot chocolate and cake if you’re visiting! The courtyards are now home to over 25 individual and independent shops, which make a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

under the stars
Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
During the preparations for Hippolyta and Theseus’ wedding, the world turns upside down as four young lovers find their future happiness in the hands of two warring fairy factions and the star actor of an amateur theatre group literally loses his head. This hilarious and magical retelling of the Bard’s classic comedy proves how love-pangs, poisons and pre-nuptial anxieties make for the most restless of Midsummer Night’s Dreams. Martin Hutson directs this brand new production with the trials and tribulations of marriage at its heart in this unique setting on the Knepp Estate.

Henfield Museum currently has the following organised to tie in with the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019:
Spring/Summer A History of Henfield, by Alan Barwick (Curator, Henfield Museum) Henfield & the Bishopp Family in the Civil War by Robert Gordon (Chairman, Friends of Henfield Museum) Henfield Museum, Henfield Hall, Coopers Way, Henfield
100 Objects That was the challenge the Year of Culture inspired the recently formed Heritage Forum to undertake. Nine months later and nearly 200 nominated objects have been whittled down to just 100. And what stories these 100 objects reveal, from Chanctonbury Ring to a trade token, from a mummified cat to Broadwood piano. Together they bring alive the complex but fascinating heritage of the District. Along with a major exhibition in Horsham Museum and an allied publication, contributing groups will use this project to reveal even more amazing stories of individual areas. And to give a flavour of what’s in store – a trade token with a candlestick led on to why houses are white, to roman oil lamps, a sparrow roaster, rushlights, LED lights and that Steyning Gas Company was formed in 1859, Henfield in 1864, but most of the district didn’t have gas at all. The heritage of Horsham District in 100 objects opens on 20 July and runs until 12 October at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. Look out too for the attractive paperback publication.

Highwood Sculpture project
FREE
Developing a community’s identity is important for creating a sense of place, and a sculpture project on the outskirts of Horsham aims to help form this. A new public work will be emerging throughout 2019 at the new Highwood Village development near to the A24. The artist, Jon Edgar, will use the input of local residents and passers-by, including encouraging and instructing basic carving skills to help the progress of the five tonne stone sculpture which will emerge through the Year of Culture and remain for posterity. Jon grew up in Billingshurst and returned to West Sussex 10 years ago with his young family. He has large public works at Pulborough, Lewes, on the South Downs and in the Surrey Hills. His last major exhibition toured to Yorkshire Sculpture Park from Woking’s Lightbox. He uses improvisation as part of his working process to directly involve local communities so the final piece becomes theirs as much as his own.
Look out for dates to come and participate.

Artists needed Seofon Business Services Ltd is launching the first Horsham District Landscape Artist of the Year annual art contest. The finalists will be displayed at an exhibition at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens. Chris Cooper, one of the directors at Seofon, and also the chairman of the Billingshurst & Horsham Chamber of Commerce thought it would be a great idea to set up an annual artist competition for the residents of Horsham District, with a different theme each year. This year the theme is landscapes of the Horsham District. All artists are invited to paint, sketch or illustrate a landscape in the Horsham District in any medium of their choice, except photography. Photographs of your art can be submitted via the Seofon website between 1 September 2018 and 31 July 2019, with a consent form (if under 16 years old) which is available online, giving plenty of time for you all to perfect your skill.

The Coldwaltham Yew tree
Did you know there is a 3,000 years Yew tree in the churchyard at Coldwaltham which measures 10 metres around the trunk? The Coldwaltham Yew tree stands in the yard of St Giles Church, which was built around 1200. It is thought to be one of the oldest trees in England, and was granted a Tree Preservation Order in 1964 to protect it from being felled or damaged, and also ensures that it is protected and preserved. If you have not visited St Giles Church in Coldwaltham, or seen the Coldwaltham yew, we would highly recommend a visit. The church itself has a rich history and the yew is magnificent!

Pulborough Brooks
Did you know Pulborough Brooks is not only an RSPB nature reserve but also a Site of Special Scientific Interest?
Pulborough Brooks sits within the stunning South Downs National Park. There are a number of ‘star species’ in the reserve, including peregrines, barn owls, lapwings, nightingales, and wigeon. You will hear the nightingales singing in the springtime whilst the lapwings are nesting. Over the summer the dragonflies dash across the Brooks and at night the bats swoop overhead. If you visit in the autumn and take the wooded heath trail you’ll be treated to a rainbow of fungi. Winter sees the wigeon in abundance but they may scatter if the peregrine falcon appears on his hunt! 2019 sees an exciting new four-kilometre nature and art based walk coming to the local area. This will start at Pulborough Station, winding through the village, across Pulborough Brooks, and into the RSPB nature reserve. Along the walk, you’ll find information boards to tell you about the local countryside and wildlife as well as amazing and fantastic sculptures. You can also download a WildArt App to help you learn even more along the walk and the wonders you’ll find on the route. Children will enjoy an Augmented Reality treasure trail as part of this educational app. RSPB Pulborough Brooks, Wiggonholt, Pulborough RH20 2EL

“An artist’s function is everything: he must be able to turn his hand to everything, for his mission is to decorate life…” – Frank Brangwyn, 1934
Sir Frank Brangwyn is a hot topic for the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. Brangwyn was a polymath, an artist/craftsman working in different mediums to produce in excess of 12,000 murals, prints, artworks, decorations and stained glass windows. He is of local historical importance as he was commissioned in 1912 to produce 16 panels for the Chapel Building at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham. Unusually for a series of paintings like this, the original sketches produced by Brangwyn in preparation for the final panels are still in existence. Christ’s Hospital have these seven preparatory 1m by 2m framed charcoal and conte crayon colourful sketches. They have not been displayed since 1924, just after Brangwyn completed the final panels. These sketches are rare and a fascinating insight into the preparation for a work of art like this. They are an incredible teaching aid and inspiration to help aspiring artists understand the artistic process. However, the sketches require some conservation in order to preserve them to inspire generations to come. This work will be undertaken with support from the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. We will follow the conservation and keep you up to date with the progress. Once complete, the sketches will be put on display for public viewing and we will bring you full details nearer the time.

One From The Heart and The Capitol Horsham present
The Red Lion by Patrick Marber Directed by Guy Unsworth Small time semi-pro football, the non-league. A world away from the wealth and the television cameras. A young player touched with brilliance arrives from nowhere. An ambitious manager determines to make him his own. And the old soul of the club still has dreams of glory. A haunting and humorous new play about the dying romance of the great English game - and the tender, savage love that powers it. The Red Lion opened at The National Theatre in 2015 and was subsequently revived at The Trafalgar Studios in 2017. This new production is being produced as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture.
Tickets available from www.enchantedhorsham.co.uk
The Red Lion is a great opportunity to encourage new audiences into your venue. It is a hugely entertaining play with great humour and has wide appeal to local football players, teams and supporters alike. The Red Lion will tour football clubs throughout Horsham District in August and September and then tour theatres nationally. If you would like to host a performance at your football club or village hall, please contact nick.mowat@horsham.gov.uk
