Annual Memorial Service Honors Those We Lost

O

n February 7, Sister Margaret Oettinger, Director of Pastoral Care, and the Spiritual

Care Department hosted the Annual

Memorial Service to remember all loved ones who passed away in 2017. The service honored not only HSS family members, but also our friends and family. C. Ronald MacKenzie, MD, Attending Physician and Chairman of the Spiritual Care Committee, welcomed those in attendance. “Today we honor and remember cherished loved ones and friends who passed away in 2017. We always talk about the HSS family, and like any family would, we are here to offer comfort and support.” Chaplain Elaine Chan read a touching poem titled “The Dash” by Linda Ellis, reminding us to cherish the times we spent with our loved ones. “I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her casket from beginning to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash

2017 Employee of the Year CONTINUED FROM COVER Lou then announced Lillian as the 2017 Employee of the Year winner. Lillian has been a member of the HSS family for more than 17 years, serving as a Senior Program Associate of Charla de Lupus (Lupus Chat)®. She is able to instantly engage new patients during some of the hardest times of their journey and doesn’t shy away from difficult questions. Lillian’s contributions to the Charla Program are invaluable and her exceptional leadership with lupus patients and their families is second to none. After Lillian was announced as the winner, several of her colleagues came to the stage to share kind

I’m right by your side each night and day and within your heart I long to stay.” Stephanie Goldberg, Ralph Bianco, JeMe CioppaMosca and Barbara Wukovits then read the names aloud of those being remembered. We also remembered all of the men and women who gave their lives serving our country and those whose names were not read. Chaplain Margo Heda shared words of reflection of our loved ones in the form of a poem by Rabbi Alvin Fine titled “Life Is a Journey.” “Birth is a beginning and death a destination, but life is a journey, a sacred pilgrimage, made stage by stage…to life everlasting.” The program concluded with a blessing by Father David Adiletta, OP. Let us all take a moment of silence to remember those we lost.

of the right hip and was told to stop ALL athletic activity. I hated this because I was becoming increasingly active in the competitive ballroom dance world and the last thing I wanted to hear was STOP. Stopping didn’t get better. It got worse so I started to do some research and a couple of New York dance friends told me to see Dr. Padgett, which I did. He explained that I had osteoarthritis which wasn’t hard to believe because I looked at my x-rays and could clearly see the problem. Dr. Padgett replaced my hip and the result was terrific. I rehabbed the way he told me; following instructions to the letter and within a year and a half, 2011, I was a United States Senior Ballroom Champion in 2 styles. Can’t ask for anything better than that. Thank you, Dr. Padgett. PS — A few years later he repaired a torn meniscus in my right knee. I was in and out in a few hours and never missed a beat. My suggestion: Run if you can — don’t walk — directly to Dr. Padgett and get your life back!

Employee of the Month February 2018 – Andrew Koo Congratulations to Andrew, Employee of the Month for February. Andrew is a Physician Assistant who has been a member of the HSS family for nearly nine years. He is conscientious, diligent and tenacious in everything that he does, and his performance is always top notch. Andrew takes the time to listen to his patients and explain procedures in detail. He has the ability to calm the fears of even the most anxious patient through his witty sense of humor and compassionate demeanor. Andrew is not only committed to his patients, but to his colleagues as well. He eagerly volunteers to train new hires and selflessly offers to assist all members of the interdisciplinary team. What makes Andrew stand out above all else is his integrity, exemplary work ethic and positive spirit.

Employee Safety Zone HSS Housekeeping: Lenny Bonanno and Tim Healy In this month’s Employee Safety Zone, we are featuring the Housekeeping Department. We asked Lenny Bonanno, Director of Housekeeping, and Tim Healy, Building Service Aide and a very engaged member of the HSS family, to tell us their thoughts about employee safety. Here are a few things that you may not know about the Housekeeping Department: There are more than 100 employees covering 16 sites daily across the HSS campus. From pushing equipment to lifting furniture, taking out the garbage and mopping the floors, Housekeeping makes HSS sparkle. Here in this month’s Safety Zone, it’s their time to shine. LENNY BONANNO How does your team work together to keep everyone safe? The staff is trained on how to spot and rectify potential issues that can cause harm to patients, visitors and staff. We also conduct weekly safety reminders covering a whole host of topics. In the event that an injury happens, how do you ensure that it is reported to you and in the Occurrence System in a timely manner? We in-service our staff to report any and all injuries or near misses in the Occurrence Reporting System. They feel very comfortable and empowered to do so. What are the most common unsafe situations that you see or hear about? Lifting heavy trash and linen bags, wet floors and tripping hazards. Those are the main challenges we face on a daily basis. How has the Body Mechanics program affected the staff? The body mechanics program has been an invaluable tool for our department. It has raised awareness exponentially. What do you encourage your staff to do? We encourage them to stay vigilant and take leadership roles in preventing injuries. What makes your team great at what they do? My team is extremely dedicated and hard working. They are willing to go above and beyond their normal scope of service. They are consummate team players, never willing to compromise the safety and satisfaction of our patients, staff and visitors. TIM HEALY What keeps you so engaged and on top of things? One thing that keeps me engaged every day is the great deal of responsibility the Housekeeping Department carries day in and day out – making sure every patient and staff member walks into a clean, non-hazardous hospital. What is the toughest part of your job? The toughest part of my job would have to be time management. Making sure my daily routine and additional work orders are done with proper care and execution without rushing. Whether that’s cleaning a patient’s room or cleaning a coffee spill off the floor, every second adds up. How do you stay safe on the job? What methods do you practice that keep you safe? I stay safe on the job by wearing the proper attire and using the proper equipment depending on the severity of the situation. You are on your feet for almost your entire shift. How do you prepare for a long day on your feet? Some days are harder than others when it comes to being on your feet all day. Fortunately, the HSS psychical therapists have helped me out tremendously. They have given me tips and advice on how to relieve stress and inflammation in my feet/legs. Also, wearing the proper footwear is something I found to be essential when you’re on your feet every day. How do you report hazards or unsafe work conditions since you do not have easy access to the Occurrence Reporting System? I go directly to my superior and report the issue and follow up with this person daily to see if the situation has been taken care of or not. I’ve found that to be the most effective way to report any incident in the hospital that may be detrimental to ones’ health. What do you love most about your job? The people. There are plenty of reasons why I love working at HSS but the one unique reason that stands out to me the most is the unlimited amount of interactions I have with people every day. We hope you not only enjoyed this feature but were inspired by it! If you’d like your department featured in the Employee Safety Zone, send us an email at EmployeeSafety@HSS.edu.
