The diversity of our faces helps with this understanding and ultimately our ability to provide excellent care for the patients we serve.” “HSS strives to deliver optimal care and services to all of our patients by adopting initiatives, behaviors, attitudes and policies that enhance cultural competency and inclusion while serving diverse populations,” said Lou Shapiro, President and CEO. “We applaud Dr. Parks for his efforts and his work in this area, and are extremely proud that a member of the HSS staff has received the AAOS Diversity Award.” Dr. Parks is an exemplary leader who is actively involved in many organizations working to eliminate racial, ethnic and gender disparities for both patients and future physicians. He is a member of the steering committee of the Movement is Life Caucus, which seeks to understand and address disparities in musculoskeletal healthcare. He is also actively involved with Nth Dimensions, a nonprofit organization that works to increase representation of women and minorities in orthopedic surgery. Congratulations, Dr. Parks, on this outstanding honor!

Compliance Helpline Reminder The Compliance Helpline is a service for employees who wish to anonymously or confidentially report suspected violations of the Hospital for Special Surgery’s Code of Conduct, officially stated policies or relevant public laws and regulations. This includes concerns about patient safety.
Panel participants at HSS in Florida included Drs. Pellicci, Paletta, Altchek, Carlson, Cammisa, Moley and Albert.
The Helpline does not replace other resources available to you, including supervisors, managers and Human Resources staff, but it is an alternative channel available to you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is operated on our behalf by National Helpline Services, Inc., an independent firm. The Compliance Helpline number is 888-651-6234. All information will be kept confidential unless the law requires it to be shared with law enforcement authorities. Hospital for Special Surgery policy forbids any retribution or retaliation against an employee who reports a compliance issue in good faith. Wolfe put in to make sure I not only had full use of my hand, but the confidence not to pause my life. I was admitted to a different hospital before HSS and the bedside manner is like night and day. HSS not only treated me with respect and took my pain seriously, but pushed me to have confidence and strength in between surgeries. I was in an incredibly vulnerable state and all of the staff at HSS made me feel comfortable, safe, and strong. My post-surgery experience was also incredible. Because of HSS’s partnership with Stamford Health, I was able to have the best OT (Jen Ossenbeck) who helped me physically, emotionally, and psychologically through one of the darkest times in my life. I know that I would not have been able to return to driving, let alone lifting at the gym, had it not been for Jen & Dr. Wolfe. I truly owe my happiness and perseverance to HSS. You pushed me not just to recover, but to thrive.
Employee of the Month March 2019 – Elexis Baral Congratulations to Elexis, Employee of the Month for March. Elexis is a Research Engineer in the Department of Biomechanics who has been a member of the HSS family since 2013. She has been described by her colleagues as an outstanding employee who is consistently upbeat, helpful and personable. Elexis runs the entire implant retrieval program at HSS. She cleans and examines the approximately 1,000 total joint replacements per year that come out of patients during revision surgeries. She also works with physician offices to ensure requested hardware and implants are returned back to patients. In addition to running the retrieval program, Elexis is always making an effort to improve the quality of work in her department. She is the first person her colleagues will go to for help with anything in the lab. According to a colleague, Elexis is the person that holds together her group so that research can be done in a smooth and efficient manner.

Employee Safety Zone Adults Need Vaccines Too! Vaccine preventable diseases kill thousands of adults each year. Although you might be familiar with childhood vaccines, it is important to know that adults also need protection from diseases through vaccines.
Flu Vaccine At HSS, everyone is familiar with the yearly flu vaccine program, which usually starts in September and continues through the winter and beyond. It is recommended annually for all adults, including pregnant women. If you contract the flu, you can be contagious one day before symptoms (usually fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and dry cough) and 5-7 days after the start of symptoms. The flu is spread by tiny droplets from the mouth and nose of the infected person through talking, sneezing and coughing. Influenza can result in severe illness, hospitalization and, in rare cases, death.
Tetanus, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough
Meaghan Hurley gives her colleague in Occupational Health, Ann Bienstock, a flu vaccine.
Occupational Health Services (OHS) can also vaccinate you with Tdap to protect you against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). This vaccine can be given to pregnant women and employees who may have exposure to newborns, but is most commonly given to those with work-related lacerations or puncture wounds.
Hepatitis B Employees who have jobs with risk factors related to blood and bodily fluids should be vaccinated against hepatitis B. It is recommended that everyone is vaccinated against hepatitis B, and all new employees are screened for hepatitis B during their pre-employment physical. For those who are not immune, the vaccine is available at OHS and is given in three doses over a six month period. The hepatitis B virus can lead to chronic liver infections, liver failure and death. To learn more about vaccines, visit: cdc.gov/vaccines/adults. If you have any questions about Employee Safety, please send us an email at EmployeeSafety@HSS.edu.
