ALUMNI AFFAIRS Dear Colleague,
COMING IN APRIL
anatomy OF A hospital We are happy to announce that David B. Levine, MD’s book Anatomy of a Hospital – Hospital for Special Surgery 1863-2013 is currently at the printer and is to be published in April. Eloquently detailing the chronological history of the hospital dating from the Civil War to the present, Dr. Levine demonstrates how HSS has shaped the field of musculoskeletal health. Learn about its modest beginnings in the middle of the Civil War in the home of its founder, James Knight, MD, to its rise on the Upper East Side of Manhattan to become the nation’s leading provider of orthopaedic care. As New York City expanded to become a leading financial, cultural and social world force over the past 150 years, Hospital for Special Surgery has blossomed into an international leader in musculoskeletal treatment, research and education. This story details the challenges and successes of that amazing journey. Chapters were generously contributed by fellow alumni and HSS staff Helene Pavlov, Adele Boskey, Gregory Liguori and Mary Hargett, Charles Christian, Steven Paget, Lou Shapiro and Thomas Sculco and includes a foreward by Richard L. Menschel and Philip D. Wilson, Jr. Books will be available for purchase via the HSS website in April and at the Alumni Meeting in November. Details will be provided in future alumni communications as they become available.
We look forward to honoring the legacy of the HSS Sesquicentennial and celebrating the advances made throughout our 150 year history. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the HSS Alumni Association, which had its beginning in 1913. At that time, there were 26 inaugural members and Virgil P. Gibney, MD, the second surgeonin-chief, was the association president. One of the primary goals of the newly formed association was advancement of the branches of surgery represented at the hospital and promotion of social exchange. Now with over 1,600 members, the alumni association is a network of thought leaders in musculoskeletal medicine spanning the world. This special issue highlights several exciting events planned for 2013. We look forward to seeing many alumni at the upcoming AAOS meeting, and on the opposite page, you will find a listing of activities that are planned at the Chicago meeting. We hope that you enjoy the annual reception and can also take advantage of the hospitality suite venue to connect with your HSS colleagues. Plans are well underway for marking the milestone hospital anniversary. The HSS Symposia 150 will be held in May and features special lectures from renowned guest speakers and a scientific meeting. The program will be recorded and later posted on HSS e-University so that you can view this special program at a later
date. Details on access will be provided to you in the coming months. The 95th Annual Alumni meeting will honor the 100th anniversary of the Alumni Association. The event is reserved for November 7-9, 2013, and it is one that you will not to want to miss. An exceptional scientific portion is planned and highlights are detailed at right. Please note that the Annual Autumn Benefit will be held on Friday, November 8. Your ongoing support for this benefit is greatly appreciated and directly funds the HSS Journal, medical education and alumni initiatives, including the production of Alumni News. The Young Friends of HSS After Party will directly follow the gala. There has been an adjustment to our usual publication schedule for Alumni News. The next full issue of the magazine will arrive in early summer and the subsequent edition will be produced in January 2014. We feel that this new timeline will allow us to focus content around our pivotal association events and present information in a more timely way. We look forward to seeing you at the AAOS. Regards, Thomas P. Sculco, MD, Surgeon-inChief
