I Chose HSS

When Natalie Morales (on the cover and photo right) injured her thumb skiing, her first stop was HSS. “For somebody like me who is an athlete, but also has a strenuous job, it’s important for me to be at my physical peak. That’s why I chose HSS.” When an MRI revealed a torn ligament, Ms. Morales was referred by Jordan D. Metzl, MD, her sports medicine physician, to hand surgeon Aaron Daluiski, MD. “Many of my colleagues have had breaks and sprains,” says Ms. Morales, news anchor of NBC News TODAY. “HSS is the go-to place for us because the quality of their care is the best in the world.” Natalie Morales and each of our patients, physicians, other health professionals, trustees, and philanthropists all share a common bond. They came to Hospital for Special Surgery for their health care, for professional advancement and personal fulfillment, and to make a difference in the lives of our patients. On the pages that follow, 14 of these individuals will tell you why.

“I had learned to live with back pain for 30 years,” says orthopedic surgeon Henry A. Backe, Jr., MD. “When I decided to have surgery, I did my research and called around the country.” His search led him to Federico P. Girardi, MD. “I wanted world-class anesthesia and orthopedic nursing, and an excellent and experienced surgeon. Besides getting rid of my back pain, I learned what it’s like to be a patient after a major operation. I saw how caregivers of all levels interacted with and respected patients. It reenergized me for how I treat my patients.”

“ I wanted to make sure I was in the best hands for the orthopedic surgery I needed. The procedure was relatively new, and HSS had already performed 1,200 of them.” Henry A. Backe, Jr., MD, Patient 1

In 1995, Helene Ross underwent hip replacement surgery. She then required two additional hip surgeries performed by Mathias P. Bostrom, MD. When she needed knee replacement surgery, Dr. Bostrom had a prosthesis designed to fit her anatomy that could be joined to the existing hip prosthesis. “I knew HSS was the best place for orthopedic surgeries,” says Ms. Ross. “It was a very innovative surgery. Dr. Bostrom is a very creative and wonderful person.”

“Everything about me is complicated! But Dr. Bostrom used a prosthesis that was specially made for me. My surgery was very, very successful and I love him for that.” Helene Ross, Patient 2

“Most of our patients have been living in pain before finding us,” says Michael Martell, physical therapist assistant. “For them, treatment at HSS begins a new journey of what will hopefully continue to be a pain-free life. It’s an honor for me to be part of that journey, helping them to get back on their feet.” Adds Mr. Martell, “One of the great things about working at HSS is that your ability to advance in your career is only limited by your own drive and imagination.”

“ I’m blessed to care for patients in a facility that never rests on its laurels. We’re always striving to be better than the day before.” Michael Martell, Physical Therapist Assistant 3

“I was up and down at least nine poles a day for over 34 years,” says retired Verizon worker Gary Henderson. “I’m an orthopedist’s dream!” In 2011, Mr. Henderson had hip replacement surgery by Douglas E. Padgett, MD. “One day, he called me personally about a new approach. To me that showed a special doctorpatient relationship…what doctor calls you in this day and age?” Today Mr. Henderson has resumed his passion for playing softball and has even restored an old car “while working on my hands and knees.”

“ Everybody in my community was asking me, ‘Where did you get your hip done?’ Two of my neighbors have since had surgeries at HSS. I’m definitely paying it forward.” Gary Henderson, Patient 4

In July 2012, Nicole Hoschuetzky, an athlete who practices CrossFit – metabolic conditioning combining weightlifting and gymnastics – tore her ACL while playing ice hockey. New to New York City, she turned to friends, family, and the Internet for guidance. Surgery by David W. Altchek, MD, enabled her to return to the demanding fitness regimen. “The doctors, nurses, and physical therapists all made me as comfortable as possible. I was in and out in one day, and I am now doing great.”

“ I was looking for the best treatment possible. After finding out that HSS and Dr. Altchek are top-ranked in the nation, it was an easy choice to come here.” Nicole Hoschuetzky, Patient 5

“I am a homegrown product in that I was a Cornell undergrad, a Weill Cornell medical student, an HSS resident, and now I’m an attending surgeon here,” says David S. Levine, MD, Foot and Ankle specialist. “My blood really does bleed HSS blue! One of the reasons patients receive such great care here is that there’s a mutual appreciation and respect for each person’s role. To me that is the essence of Hospital for Special Surgery.”

“ This is a wonderful place to practice. I could send my mother, father, wife, or my child – anyone – to HSS and be confident that they would get the best care possible.” David S. Levine, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon 6

Nine years ago, Maria Olivo-Blanch was diagnosed with lupus. She had been feeling generally ill and had no energy. When a finger on her right hand became swollen, she was advised to see a rheumatologist and made an appointment with Jessica R. Berman, MD. “Dr. Berman diagnosed me in March of 2004,” says Ms. Olivo-Blanch. “She was so thorough. I think I had over 100 questions, and she took the time to answer each of them. I’ve been seeing her ever since. She’s one of the best physicians I’ve ever had.”

“ I worked in a medical practice and had heard of the great reputation of HSS. I thought for rheumatology, it would be the best place for my health care.” Maria Olivo-Blanch , Patient 7

Before coming to HSS from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston,Vivian P. Bykerk, MD, visited the Hospital and recalled her earliest impressions that ultimately factored into her decision to join its Division of Rheumatology. “I liked that much of the Hospital is dedicated to making healthy people even healthier. And I believed I could make a contribution to HSS. They actually had an opening for someone with my skills and experience. So I knew it was going to be a good fit.”

“ When you walk into HSS you feel a warmth, a caring, and a sense of pride shared by everybody who works here.” Vivian P. Bykerk, MD, Rheumatologist 8

“I am the first MD in my family – we have a lot of PhDs, but no MDs,” says Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya, MD, second year orthopedic resident. “Once you become interested in orthopedics, HSS is the place where you want to be. As a fourth year med student I rotated here and was completely blown away by its sense of pride and community. When you combine the Hospital’s excellence in orthopedics with its ‘feel good’ environment that completed the picture for me. I wanted to be a part of that and learn from the best in the field.”

“ I was dreaming big. I knew I wanted to come to Special Surgery even before I went to med school.” Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya, MD, Orthopedic Resident 9

In 2009, D’Qwell Jackson, linebacker for the Cleveland Browns, suffered a left pectoralis tendon tear during a routine tackle. A year later he tore the same tendon on his right side. “I thought my career was over,” says Mr. Jackson. “This is a major injury,” says Frank A. Cordasco, MD, who treated Mr. Jackson. “We don’t often see athletes tear both. Despite this, he had a phenomenal return in 2011, being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month that September.”

“ I just wanted to go to the best doctor possible. You have a lot of decisions you make about the course of your life. I’m glad I made the right one.” D’Qwell Jackson, Patient 10

When Aldo Papone was asked to join the Board of HSS, he was then President and Chief Operating Officer of American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc. and involved with numerous boards in advisory roles. “It was not a decision I took lightly,” says Mr. Papone. “I welcomed the opportunity to provide counsel to a hospital with such great vision and strength.”

“ As a patient at HSS some 30 years ago, I knew immediately that it was destined for greatness, and I wanted to help the Hospital to achieve its potential.” Aldo Papone, Chairman Emeritus, HSS 11

“The integration of clinical interests and research efforts occurring at HSS is what drew me here,” says Alessandra B. Pernis, MD. “My expertise in lupus and rheumatoid arthritis is strengthened by the expertise of others and enables me to apply what I do at the basic science level to benefit patients at a much faster pace. I’ve had an incredible experience being here with highly productive and collaborative people.”

“ The collaboration of outstanding researchers and clinicians is unequalled and amazing in terms of moving research forward. I couldn’t resist coming here.” Alessandra B. Pernis, MD, Scientist 12

While throwing the ball during Little League practice, Noah Bushlow, 10, felt his arm snap and was rushed to the local emergency room. “They found a cyst in his bone,” recalls his parents. “His arm was broken straight through.” Wanting a second opinion, they were referred to John S. Blanco, MD, by Noah’s pediatrician. “I have never seen another medical institution put a family at ease the way HSS does,” says Noah’s father. “Now, when I hear, ‘I’m going to HSS,’ I always say, ‘It’s the gold standard for how to treat people.’”

“ The night that I stayed over it was really nice. The people who were there made me feel relaxed. They had good food, and I guess the surgery worked because I’m fine.” Noah Bushlow, Patient 13

Gabrielle Kantrowitz, RN, joined HSS two and a half years ago as a nurse in the Hospital’s main operating room suite. Previously, as a nurse in the OR of a general hospital in Virginia, Ms. Kantrowitz gained experience in orthopedics. “One of my mom’s friends had surgery at HSS,” says Ms. Kantrowitz. “She raved to my mother about her experience and how wonderful the hospital was. When I moved back to New York, I went in for an interview, and I was lucky enough to get a job here.”

“ I feel very well supported at HSS. Nurses are given opportunities to grow in their careers. It’s a great team environment.” Gabrielle Kantrowitz, RN, Operating Room Nurse 14

Before coming to Hospital for Special Surgery for their care, for a career, or to help support its vision and promote its growth, the individuals introduced on these pages considered many factors that are common to the thousands who choose our Hospital above all others. Patients with musculoskeletal disorders and autoimmune diseases find exceptionally skilled and experienced physicians and surgeons whose singular focus is on applying their expertise in orthopedics and rheumatology to restore quality of life. Our more than 4,000 employees find a culture of engagement and collaboration with healthcare professionals practicing at the forefront of their specialties. And trustees and friends recognize that for more than 150 years, Special Surgery has set the highest standards for patient care, medical education, and scientific endeavors that continue to ensure HSS remains the premier institution for musculoskeletal treatment.

2012 Leadership Report

A

s 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of Hospital for Special Surgery, it is clear that the Hospital’s unique culture of excellence and caring continues to be its strength. HSS has grown from a 28-bed hospital for children to the world leader in musculoskeletal patient care, education, and research, maintaining its specialized focus on improving patients’ quality of life and getting them back to what they love to do. Throughout our history we have sustained a consistent and unremitting commitment to excellence that now positions us for a future of continued success that the patients, donors, and staff who come to HSS have helped us achieve. While the mission and vision of HSS have remained constant, we are living through an unprecedented time in the healthcare industry brought about by a still uncertain economy and the implementation of healthcare reform through the Affordable Care Act, which is demanding that healthcare providers increase quality and access to care while reducing cost. Successful hospitals of tomorrow will provide a level of value that is recognized by employers, insurers and, most importantly, by patients. HSS is uniquely positioned to take advantage of our history, our reputation, and our results measured in patient outcomes to be successful in this new environment. Patients and others have recognized us for our accomplishments. U.S.News & World Report has for the third consecutive year ranked HSS the #1 hospital in the country for

18

orthopedics in its 2012 “America’s Best Hospitals” issue and also ranked HSS as a national leader in rheumatology at #3. In letters, surveys, and testimonials, our patients relate their high satisfaction in choosing HSS for their care. Based on patient feedback, for the past 19 consecutive quarters, inpatient satisfaction scores for “likelihood to recommend” have been in the 99th percentile compared to other high-performing Magnet hospitals in the national Press Ganey database. We have earned this recognition because of our unwavering focus on quality. HSS is the only hospital in New York State with a surgical site infection rate significantly lower than the state average for hip replacement for four consecutive years. As part of healthcare reform, Medicare implemented a “Value-Based Purchasing Program” to hold hospitals accountable for delivering quality outcomes. In its first year, we earned our full reimbursement and the highest bonus of any hospital in New York State based on our patient satisfaction scores and best practices to reduce infection rates. While we always implement processes for further improvement, our 2012 achievements bode well for continued success in an environment in which patients make healthcare decisions based on proven results. Demand for our services has nearly doubled in the past six years, and we expect our volume to further increase as patients who could go anywhere turn to HSS specialists to get them back to work, play, and life without pain. Our surgeons performed some 27,000 surgeries and patients made an additional 317,000 outpatient visits to HSS physicians in 2012. Patients who

want to perform at their best, including elite and everyday athletes and many others who seek the same high level of care, travelled to HSS from every state and 90 countries. As people of all ages continue to live more actively than ever before, our integrated approach will be instrumental in helping them live life to the fullest. Scientists and physicians at HSS collaborate in basic and clinical research aimed at improving results for patients, publishing 338 articles in 2012. Our high patient volumes in our areas of specialty allow us to collect and analyze data on how our patients do over time through our 45 active registries with nearly 84,000 enrollees, offering the greatest value to our patients and helping the broader medical community improve standards of care. This year we finalized our Strategic Plan 2015 to set our priorities to ensure that we achieve our goals as we continue to deliver on our mission and build on the strength and success of HSS. The Plan focuses on five “core” priorities and two “enabling” priorities that we believe explicitly address today’s challenges and provide a clear roadmap going forward. The core priorities include: (1) Support and Align a World-Class Medical Staff; (2) Maximize Quality and Efficiency; (3) Advance through Research and Innovation; (4) Serve as The Most Trusted Educator; and (5) Enable Growth and Extend the Brand. The two enabling priorities that cut across and support all of our strategic priorities are Elevating Employee Engagement and Investing in Information Technology. All are interconnected and key to our future success.

As technology continues to dominate the way we live and work, investing in information technology is imperative. We have embarked on an initiative to invest $137 million over the next five years to build an information technology infrastructure with world-class systems and services to support our growth. This investment will ensure that HSS has a platform where data can flow seamlessly, patient and physician workflows are streamlined, clinical systems are fully automated, and measurement of outcomes is integrated into everyday processes, all of which will improve care for our patients by elevating both quality and efficiency. Extending our reach optimizes value for our patients by providing convenient access to our services. We are continuing to expand our main campus while also exploring and expanding our presence in offsite locations. Patients from outside Manhattan appreciate access to HSS expertise right in their neighborhoods while still benefitting from the high level of advanced care offered on our main campus. At our main campus we made several major improvements, adding new capacity and upgrading our facilities. Thanks to generous philanthropic gifts, we opened the James M. Benson Sports Rehabilitation Center and the Tisch Sports Performance Center. With additional support from the Tisch family, we built the Steve Tisch Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Service and the Joan H. Tisch Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Reception Area on the third floor of the main hospital. We opened two new operating rooms, bringing our total to 35. And we celebrated the final stage of a multiyear effort to offer our pediatric patients and their families a comprehensive, state-of-the-art “hospital

within a hospital,” cutting the ribbon for the new Alfred and Norma Lerner Children’s Pavilion. We have continued our tradition of international outreach. A multidisciplinary group of HSS volunteers joined Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei in opening the HSS-affiliated FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in Ghana, providing world-class orthopedic care to patients in sub-Saharan Africa. Amil Par, the largest healthcare organization in Brazil, chose HSS as a partner to share our clinical expertise, education, and research as it develops its orthopedic hospital leading up to the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. We built on longstanding relationships in China to form the HSS China Orthopedic Educational Exchange. Beginning in 2013, seven physicians from China were chosen through a competitive application process to rotate with our joint replacement surgeons to learn the latest surgical techniques. Through this program, we host live video Grand Rounds educational conferences with Peking University People’s Hospital and PLA General Hospital in Beijing, China, which will soon be recorded and placed on the HSS e-University online platform, making this material available to professionals around the world. The generosity of our donors is a testament to the value our grateful patients and friends put on our ability to achieve extraordinary outcomes and research discoveries. In 2012, we raised more than $36 million from more than 5,600 donors. The origin of our reputation is rooted in our world-class medical staff, and this reputation continues to attract and retain the best people for every role in the organization. In 2012, and now again in 2013, HSS has been

recognized with the “Gallup Great Workplace Award” for our extraordinary ability to create an engaged workplace culture. The high level of commitment exhibited each day by every member of our staff enables us to achieve the outstanding levels of quality and service that will allow us to continue to be a world leader in our areas of specialty. As we celebrate our accomplishments, we continue to work towards a promising future of growth and advancement by elevating both quality and efficiency to new heights. Strategic planning, a culture of innovation and excellence, and a relentless commitment to provide value to patients around the globe contribute to positioning HSS for success.

The Dinner continues to be the largest source of unrestricted funds, raising a groundbreaking $2.6 million. Chaired by Trustees Patricia G. Warner, William R. Salomon, Alan S. MacDonald, Chase and Stephanie Coleman, and Kathryn Chenault, the evening brought the mission of HSS to nearly 1,000 guests. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Chairperson Cynthia D. Sculco and her Co-Chairs Renee Flug, Carol M. Lyden, and Antonella G. Salvati, the Autumn Benefit raised nearly $700,000 for medical education. Immediately following the Autumn Benefit, the Young Friends of HSS hosted Late Night, chaired by Sarah Jane Sculco Gibbons. Attended by more than 200 young friends, Late Night provided support for the Leon Root, MD Pediatric Outreach Program.

The sixth annual Big Apple Circus Benefit raised more than $260,000 for pediatric care and research. Co-Chairs Monica Keany, Trustee; Kate Doerge, Advisor; Michelle G. Carlson, MD; and Daniel W. Green, MD, brought together nearly 400 guests for a fun-filled afternoon on behalf of the Hospital’s pediatric patients.

Alfred and Norma Lerner Children’s Pavilion On October 25th, HSS celebrated the arrival of a longawaited dream, the official opening of the Alfred and Norma Lerner Children’s Pavilion. Trustees, donors, physicians, and staff celebrated together at a ceremonial ribbon cutting, where distinguished guests Norma Lerner and HSS Trustee Lara Lerner were recognized for their family’s transformational gift of $15 million to launch the Children’s Pavilion. Several days prior to the opening, Dr. Roger F. Widmann, Chief, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, welcomed close to 250 guests to the Lerner Children’s Pavilion Celebration, a benefit which raised nearly $120,000 to support Special Surgery’s world-class pediatric care.

Annual Fund The Annual Fund is an ever-growing source of strength for HSS. 2012 was a record-breaking year for unrestricted funds, accounting for over $5.16 million, exceeding our goal by 22 percent.

Future Growth HSS is organizing a campaign that will enable the Hospital to continue to uphold its standards of excellence in orthopedic and rheumatologic medicine, as well as further realize its vision to lead the world as the most innovative source of medical care, the premier research institution, and the most trusted educator. HSS is planning for continued growth in every area – from facilities to research to education – which will lay the groundwork for our success in the years to come.
