International Center

The International Center staff coordinates all aspects of your hospital stay, helping to ensure that you and your family are comfortable and that your concerns are addressed. Our comprehensive and personalized services are described below.

Medical Care Arrangements We will arrange an initial referral for you with an appropriate specialist, as well as any needed diagnostic and subsequent appointments. International Center staff will also coordinate any necessary support services during your time here. An International Center staff member will meet you and your family upon your arrival at HSS and remain in contact with you throughout your hospital experience. We act as a liaison between you and your physicians to address any issues or concerns prior to and following treatment. Our staff also regularly checks on your progress during and after surgery, and we make sure you know where to go for physical therapy and other post-operative care during your recovery.

Financial Services Our financial team provides an estimate of treatment charges and assists in managing the relevant financial aspects of the hospital visit for patients paying out of pocket. A Financial Analyst will explain the details of your estimate and final bill. HSS also works with certain international insurance companies. A member of the financial team will review your insurance information to determine and explain your coverage and benefits.

Multilingual Staff International Center staff members speak several languages and also work with HSS Language Services to provide skilled medical interpreters to assist during your clinical appointments and hospital stay. There is no charge for medical interpreter services provided at the hospital.


HSS surgeons and physicians work closely with our anesthesiologists and award-winning nurses before, during, and after surgery to ensure that each patient receives the highest level of care with close attention paid to pain management. Accommodations

Exploring New York City

The hospital’s Belaire Guest Facility is conveniently located across the street from the main hospital building and offers comfortable lodging for patients and their families. Studio, one- and two-bedroom units are available with a full-service kitchenette, full bath, and a living room/seating area, as well as telephone and television services.

Hospital for Special Surgery is located in one of the greatest cities in the world. New York City boasts more than 150 museums, an estimated 20,000 restaurants, and countless sources of recreation and entertainment – from Broadway shows to foreign film festivals, and a vast array of music, opera and dance performances. The International Center staff can provide tourist information and tips on taking advantage of your stay in New York City, including restaurant, hotel, and entertainment information.

In addition, we have an extensive list of hotels and furnished apartments in the area, some of which offer special rates to HSS patients.

Transportation The International Center can arrange for car service between the airport and hospital upon request. We can also assist with transportation to and from the hospital for your appointments.

Many of our inpatient hospital rooms offer spectacular views of the riverfront, creating a tranquil healing atmosphere.
