About Pilates

The Pilates Program at HSS

The Pilates Method was created in the early 1900’s by Joseph Pilates. The Method is a form of mind/body exercise designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body.

Specialty Classes and Workshops The Pilates Method can be easily modified for specific client populations and sport specific training. A variety of Pilates specialty workshops/classes are offered throughout the year at the ICC including:

Pilates incorporates 6 key principles into each exercise: breathing, centering, control, concentration, precision and fluidity.

Pilates includes work on the mat as well as on highly specified spring resistance apparatus. Pilates equipment is uniquely designed not only to add targeted resistance to a muscle group but also to assist movements, therefore making it an ideal form of exercise for those suffering from mal-alignment, injuries, overused muscles or chronic weakness. Through regular Pilates practice one can expect a stronger core, increased flexibility, improved posture and an overall better sense of well-being.

The Hospital for Special Surgery Rehabilitation Department offers Pilates instruction at their off-site location, The Integrative Care Center (ICC), located in the heart of mid-town. The ICC houses a fullyequipped, state-of-the-art Pilates Studio within its rehabilitation gym. Whether for fitness or incorporated into a physical rehabilitation program, Pilates can be highly beneficial to wellness. The Method’s corrective exercises are ideal for retraining proper body mechanics and improving body awareness. For patients undergoing rehabilitation, Pilates may be a valuable addition to their physical therapy program. When appropriate, patients can seamlessly transition out of therapy and into a Pilates exercise program to further their gains achieved in rehabilitation.

Each client receives instruction from a highly qualified, nationally certified Pilates instructor experienced in working with individuals undergoing a rehabilitation program. The instructors work together as a team with the client and the referring physician or therapist. As a result, a one-of-a-kind exercise program is developed to help the client achieve his or her goals. Patients can transition from therapy to Pilates in the safe and friendly environment of our Pilates studio. Our clientele have included elite athletes through octogenarians. Private, semi-private, and group classes are offered.
