Comprehensive Spine Care for the Primary Care Physician Friday, October 19, 2012 Sponsored by the HSS Spine Care Institute and the Office of Continuing Medical Education LOCATION Hospital for Special Surgery Richard L. Menschel Education Center nd 2 Floor, 535 East 70th Street, New York City STATEMENT OF NEED Back pain is one of the most common conditions for which patients go to see their primary care physicians. Because many symptoms are chronic and change in severity over time, ideal management of spinal disorders takes a multidisciplinary approach and partners the PCP with physiatrists, rheumatologists, orthopaedists and orthopaedic surgeons.
¾¾ Diagnose common adolescent spine conditions such as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), spondylolysis and isthmic spondylolisthesis; common adult spine conditions such as low back pain, disc herniations, radiculopathy, degenerative spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, and inflammatory disease of the lumbar spine; and common geriatric spine conditions such as osteoporotic spine fractures and adult spinal deformity. ACCREDITATION Hospital for Special Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Although many PCPs appropriately refer patients to specialists for spine management, advances in specialized care–including imaging modalities, noninvasive strategies, medical interventions and surgical approaches–require continued in-depth conversation to assure that PCPs update their knowledge to maintain competency in this therapeutic area.
CREDIT DESIGNATION Hospital for Special Surgery designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is targeted to primary care physicians, fellows, residents and medical students.
SPECIAL NEEDS Hospital for Special Surgery is accessible for individuals with disabilities or special needs Participants with special needs are requested to contact the Office of Continuing Medical Education at 212.606.1812.

¾¾ Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team for optimal management of adolescent, adult and geriatric spinal conditions.
It is the policy of Hospital for Special Surgery to disclose all financial relationships that planners, teachers and authors have with commercial interests.
¾¾ Correctly identify the anatomy of the spine and be able to perform a proper physical examination. ¾¾ Describe the role of spinal imaging studies in the primary care setting, pain generators of the lumbar spine and medical causes of low back pain.
¾¾ Acquire greater insight into conservative modalities including the role for chiropractic care and physiatry care in addition to surgical approaches.
