INSPIRED TO GIVE
Spring 2017
3 TAX-EFFICIENT GIFTS WITH BIG IMPACTS YOUR 2017 PHILANTHROPIC GUIDE With tax season just behind us and tax reform on the table in Washington, now is the right time to think about your charitable giving strategies to support Hospital for Special Surgery in 2017. Cash is often the first asset we think of to donate, but it may not be the most tax-wise gift. Here are three ways to give that may allow you to maximize your impact at HSS and minimize your tax burden. When you donate LONG-TERM APPRECIATED SECURITIES to HSS, you receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the asset up to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) and are not subjected to a capital gains tax. The more appreciated the asset, the greater the tax savings. A QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION, also known as an IRA Charitable Rollover, allows individuals 70½ or older to direct up to $100,000 from their traditional IRA to HSS or another qualifying charity without recognizing the transferred assets as income. These distributions count toward minimum required distributions. Contributing to a DONOR ADVISED FUND may make you eligible for a charitable deduction for the fair market value of the asset on the date of contribution, and will allow you to recommend grants to HSS in the future. Being thoughtful about how you give to HSS can help you make the biggest impact on the Hospital’s patients in the most tax-efficient manner. We encourage you to speak with your advisor or call our office to learn more about these giving strategies.

There was nothing more important to Susan and Barney than to give back.”
The late Susan Vavroch was a patient at Hospital for Special Surgery for her entire life. As a young child, she was treated by Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus Dr. Philip D. Wilson, Sr. and throughout her adulthood she was under the care of his son, Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus Dr. Philip D. Wilson, Jr, last seeing him for a 19 year post-operative check-up in 2013. Moved by the care she received at HSS – care that enabled her to live a full and active life as a writer, gardener, and volunteer in her Connecticut community – Susan and her late husband, Barney, included a bequest to HSS in their will. “There was nothing more important to Susan and Barney than giving back,” says Amy Schuchat, the Vavrochs’ longtime friend and neighbor.
wanted anyone who needed the “They Hospital’s care to have the same, wonderful experience that Susan had. ” Susan’s doctors at HSS saw beyond her disorder, caring for her as a whole person. She and Barney trusted HSS alone for orthopedic problems, and they recommended the Hospital to all of their friends. The Vavrochs included HSS in their estate plan over 20 years ago. “Susan and Barney always intended for the majority of their estate to support the charities they loved,” says Amy. “They were regular people with significant empathy, and a bequest allowed them to make a large impact at HSS and to help people in need of HSS’ care.”

BEQUESTS A charitable bequest is one of the easiest ways to make Hospital for Special Surgery part of your legacy. Most bequests to HSS are either unrestricted, allowing us to use the gift wherever the need is greatest, or restricted, allowing you to specify how your gift is to be used. Please call our office to discuss a restricted bequest. Following is suggested language that may be useful to you and your attorney. Unrestricted Bequest: I give, devise and bequeath to HSS Foundation, located at 535 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021 and with the federal tax identification number of 13-6714749, the sum of $X (or x% of my residuary estate) as an unrestricted gift to be used for its general purposes. Restricted Bequest: I give, devise and bequeath to Hospital for Special Surgery, located at 535 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021 and with the federal tax identification number of 13-1624135, the sum of $X (or x% of my residuary estate). It is my preference that this bequest be used to support ___, or similar projects that may need financial assistance at the time my bequest is received. Bequests can be made in honor or in memory of a loved one, or a physician or nurse who has made your experience at HSS particularly meaningful.
