SAYING THANK YOU

Fall 2017

MAKE A GIFT THAT PROVIDES INCOME FOR LIFE There are many ways to give to HSS, and planning helps to ensure that your donations meet both your charitable and personal objectives. To avoid choosing between your philanthropic goals and your financial security, you may want to consider gifts that allow you or a loved one to receive a stream of payments for life. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES A gift annuity is a simple contract under which HSS makes fixed payments to one or more annuitants for life in exchange for a transfer of cash, marketable securities, or other assets. The payments are unaffected by interest rates and stock prices, and can provide financial support to a loved one in a tax-advantaged manner. The size of charitable gift annuity payments depends on several factors, including the value of the contribution ($10,000 min. at HSS) and the age(s) of the annuitant(s). CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS A trust refers to an arrangement in which property is managed by one person or entity for the benefit of another. With a charitable remainder trust, you transfer assets into the trust and receive annual payments for life or for a specified period of years. The payments can either be fixed or vary according to investment performance year to year. In addition to ensuring that you or someone you love will receive income for life, both charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts offer attractive tax benefits and can provide significant philanthropic support to HSS. We encourage you to speak with your advisor or call our office to learn more about these giving strategies.

I am so grateful for everyone at HSS who has helped me lead an active life, despite the scoliosis.” For over 40 years, Donna MacCrae has been teaching elementary school students, sitting in small chairs designed for nine-year-olds and stooping to meet her students eye to eye. Diagnosed with scoliosis as a child, Donna credits HSS with allowing her to enjoy her life and her career. “The Hospital is keeping me healthy,” she says.

At age 13, Donna’s legs were different lengths and her spine was curved. Dissatisfied with a physician who advised waiting a few years before intervening, Donna’s mother brought her to HSS to see the late Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus Philip D. Wilson, Jr., MD. Dr. Wilson successfully performed a spinal fusion on Donna using a relatively new device called a Harrington Rod that reduced the curvature of her spine.

“Without HSS, I would have succumbed to a lung complication a long time ago,” says Donna. “HSS saved my life.” Nearly thirty years after her surgery, Donna returned to HSS seeking relief from back pain. Spine specialists Dr. David B. Levine and Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei prescribed exercise and physical therapy. “I made a lifelong commitment to maintaining my back health,” says Donna.

Motivated by her life-changing care and the advancements she has witnessed, Donna became an annual donor and included HSS in her estate plan. “Continuing the research is so important to me.” Because of her experience with Dr. Wilson, she is particularly proud to be a member of the Wilson Society. “I want the environment that Dr. Wilson created at HSS to continue,” Donna says. “I want to give back and say, ‘thank you’.”

“HSS saved my life.”

A BEquEST IN YOuR WILL A charitable bequest is one of the easiest ways to make Hospital for Special Surgery part of your legacy. Bequests to HSS are either unrestricted, allowing us the flexibility to use the gift where it is most needed, or restricted, allowing you to specify how your gift is to be used. Please call our office to discuss a bequest gift. Following is suggested language that may be useful to you and your attorney. Unrestricted Bequest: I give, devise, and bequeath to HSS Foundation, located at 535 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021 the sum of $X (or x% of my residuary estate) and with the federal tax identification number of 13-6714749, as an unrestricted gift to be used for its general purposes. Restricted Bequest: I give, devise, and bequeath to Hospital for Special Surgery, located at 535 East 70th St., New York, NY 10021 and which has the federal tax identification number of 13-1624135, the sum of $X (or x% of my residuary estate). It is my preference that this bequest be used to support ___, or similar projects that may need financial assistance at the time my bequest is received. Bequests can be made in honor or in memory of a loved one, or a physician or other member of your care team who has made your experience at HSS particularly meaningful.

YOUR LEGACY WILSON SOCIETY In 1998, HSS established the Wilson Society to recognize donors during their lifetimes for including the Hospital in their estate plans. Named in honor of the late Surgeon-in-Chief Emeriti Dr. Philip D. Wilson, Jr. and Dr. Philip D. Wilson, Sr., the Society is helping HSS create a better future for those affected by musculoskeletal disease – today and for years to come.
