Student Spotlight Victoria Wong – An Exploration in Healthcare

Get Trained.. Get Hired.

In 2014, Victoria Wong enrolled in college in her home State of Connecticut. After completed 15 credits, like many young adults, she paused the pursuit of her education. Two years later, Victoria found herself unemployed. Now living in the Bronx and knowing that through the pursuit of education and training she could achieve a better quality of life, she began her search to find a no-cost certificate program. One of Victoria’s friends referred her to Phipps Neighborhoods Career Network: Healthcare (CNH), offered through Phipps Neighborhoods and their partners, Montefiore Health System and Hostos Community College. CNH is a career development program that helps young adults secure healthcare-related employment and/or education credentials. It provides career exploration and experiential instruction focused on the participants’ interests. Enthusiastic about exploring the various careers in the healthcare field, Victoria enrolled in the CNH program in September 2019. By January 2020, Victoria was interning at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx where she was a comfort to patients by providing them with books and magazines, as well as an asset to the nursing staff by relaying information on patients’ needs. Victoria’s interest gravitated toward the Pharmacy Technician field. Without wasting any time, in February 2020, days after her graduation from CNH, she enrolled and began the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program offered through Hostos Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). A few sessions into the program, the unimaginable happened. The COVID-19 global pandemic hit New York and Victoria and her classmates found themselves transitioning from in-classroom instruction to online distance learning. The speed with which CEWD transitioned the Pharmacy Technician Program from in-person to virtual, allowed teacher and students to stay on track Thanks to the opportunities and complete the program as planned.

“ provided by Phipps Neighborhoods and Hostos, I’ve been able to excel in my education, as well as gain valuable experiences that have broadened my future’s horizons further than I previously thought possible. My next goal, the PTCB exam, will expand my career opportunities and for that, I’m truly grateful.

Victoria Wong, 23 Hostos Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program - May 2020 Phipps Neighborhoods Career Network: Healthcare (CNH) – January 2020

Victoria explained that this new normal encompassed interactive online class sessions, along with independent assignments. She spoke of the passion emanating from her instructor for the field of Pharmacy, which kept her engaged and though challenging, made learning easier. By remaining focused and motivated, Victoria successfully completed the program as one of the top three students in her cohort with a 96% grade point average. Currently, Victoria is using this time to study and prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, a nationally recognized certification administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, while continuing to live in the Bronx with her boyfriend. She hopes to take and pass the exam in the coming months and plans to find employment in the field. Ultimately, Victoria envisions herself returning to college to pursue a degree in Pharmacy or Psychology. She looks forward to achieving all of her educational and professional goals and starting a family down the road.

THE SKILLS

Division of

Continuing Education & Workforce Development

TO DO THE JOB

The staff and faculty at the Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos Community College welcomes you to our Fall 2020 semester. During these extraordinary times, we hope you and your families are safe and in good health. The last several months have challenged us in many ways. Despite the sudden COVID-19 global pandemic, we successfully concluded the 2019-2020 academic year and the Summer 2020 session. We offer our heartfelt congratulations and admiration for those that remained persistent and committed to completing courses while juggling home-schooling for children, work, care-giving and other responsibilities. March 2020 will be forever remembered by its sudden disruption and its subsequent effect on our daily lives. It was no different for our CEWD community. In order to continue the delivery of quality instruction and job preparation programs through distance learning while moving our entire staff to work from home, immediate changes had to be made. We faced these issues head-on and reinvented CEWD as an online entity for the first time in our 50-year history. The faculty seized the opportunity to reimagine its teaching and learning strategies without compromising standards of excellence, while keeping our community’s health and safety in mind. By working as a team, we pivoted to distance learning within a two-week timeframe. CEWD could not have succeeded in this transformation without the support of Hostos faculty and staff, IT and our College community. Throughout this public health crisis and shift to remote learning, we provided professional development for faculty, as well as computer technology assistance and resources to teachers, staff and students. While working remotely, staff continued providing the necessary guidance to prospective and enrolled students, along with career services and resources for free restaurant meals, the Hostos food pantry, unemployment assistance and jobs and mental health services. Students enrolled in certificate programs received online support while studying to pass NYS and industry certification tests. As a result, in 2019-2020, over 93% of our students passed their Allied Health certification tests and 90% of students enrolled in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) programs successfully completed their courses. In addition, 15 students in one cohort of the Culinary Arts Program not only completed program requirements but received job offers shortly thereafter.

The Osborne Association to hold online OSHA certification courses;

The Consortium for Worker Education to train 25 individuals for the Commercial Driver’s License exam;

WIOLA for the continuation of the Home Health Aide/English as a Second Language Program;

The Social Services Administration for the Hostos CUNY Work Incentives Planning and Assistance Program (WIPA), and;

NYC’s Small Business Services for our Culinary Arts Program.

Many of these and other grant-funded programs continue to allow us to offer free classes to our community. To keep us all safe, the Fall 2020 semester will continue to offer quality distance learning, support services and resources to our students. The Division will continue offering our many industry certificate programs in Allied Health, Computer Technology, Construction, Cab, Commercial and Individual Drivers’ Licensing, Finance & Business, Site Safety and Teaching. Preparation for the High School Equivalency test in English and Spanish, English for Speakers of Other Languages, pre-college programs and transition to college assistance will also continue. We invite you to review our Fall 2020 catalog for programs and courses that relate to your career and job training needs and the support services that will help you accomplish your goals. Some of our programs are free and others are tuition or fee-based. Please refer to page 10 for tuition assistance information and page 14 to learn about the Helena Rubenstein Scholarship.
