Student Spotlight Tajherel (Taj) Stewart – All You Need Is Determination Tajherel Stewart did his growing up in Queens, N.Y. It was there at a local library in 2018, where he completed a High School Equivalency Program and received his GED. He found employment at a group home working with people with mental disabilities. While working his full-time job, Taj relocated to the Bronx. That’s where he heard about a free program that provides young adults with the training and skills they need to secure employment in the healthcare field. In August 2019, the Career Network: Healthcare (CNH) operated by Phipps Neighborhoods in partnership with Montefiore Health System and Hostos Community College provided Taj with 13 weeks of career exploration and experiential instruction and an internship in the Engineering Department at Montefiore. Upon completion of the CNH program, Taj decided to pursue a Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certification.

He started the PCT program in November of 2019 at the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos Community College. By the end of February 2020, in just over three months, Taj completed the PCT programand received his National Health Career Association Certification, all while continuing to work full-time at that same group home. Taj’s employment search was stalled by the COVID 19 Pandemic but he remained determined. Again, with the help of Phipps Neighborhoods (PN), Taj was back on track. PN’s Career Coach, Corwin Spivey, submitted an application to 1199: The National Health Care Workers’ Union, on behalf of Taj. Luck was on his side when he was referred for a PCT position with Montefiore. His former supervisor from his internship with the Engineering Department at Montefiore gave him a glowing review! Taj landed the job and began his career as a PCT on December 15, 2020. Taj’s determination already has him thinking about the future and how he can expand on his healthcare career. He’s looking into the possibility of pursuing a Physician Assistant Certification which would mean enrolling in college.

As we ring in the New Year, the staff and faculty of the Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development at Hostos Community College welcome you to a Spring 2021 semester full of hope and promise. Many of you have made New Year’s resolutions regarding a desire to improve the quality of your lives and those of your loved ones. If this includes gaining new skills to remain relevant or move into a higher position in your field, pursuing an entirely new career path, earning professional certifications or credentials or learning a new language, we are here to support your goals. Because of our concern for your health and safety and that of our faculty and staff during this Pandemic, the members of our Divisional community have decided that we will support your goals through online instruction and support services. Therefore, many of our courses are offered virtually with support from our staff and faculty to ensure your success. Notwithstanding, our faculty and staff will provide you with quality instruction and job training certifications in industries where there is job growth now and in the future. These include: Allied Health; Cab, Commercial and Individual Drivers’ Licensing; Computer Technology; Construction; Counseling; Culinary Arts; Dental; Education; Fitness & Nutrition; Finance & Business; Pest Control; Real Estate; Security & Safety; Site Safety; Skilled Trades; and Teaching. Other program offerings include High School Equivalency Test Prep in English and Spanish, English for Speakers of Other Languages, pre-college and transition to college admissions. In addition, since Hostos is a resource hub for the community we serve, our Center for Bronx Nonprofits offers workshops and trainings to Bronx middle management executives looking to upskill their leadership, managerial, organizational development and technical skills. We invite you to review our catalog for programs of interest to you. Moreover, in addition to our overall programmatic offerings, computer support, guidance, career and college prep services are available. While most of our program offerings are fee-based, we are committed to providing workforce development training programs that are affordable for our community. Through New York City, State and Federal grants, we are able to provide many courses at no cost to you, if eligible. See information on tuition assistance and scholarships on pages 10 and 16. The provision of free courses is consistent with the mission of the College to provide access to higher education for all who seek it and those who historically have been underrepresented in higher education, and to provide academic programs and services that will lead to intellectual growth and socio-economic mobility.

The College and the Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development takes great pride in its historical role of providing education and training of students from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds. To ensure that we are delivering the right types of programs to you and in a format that allows you to persist in and complete your studies, we are regularly engaged in a multi-year self-study. This is a requirement of the Middle States Commission of Higher Education. The Commission is a membership association that defines, maintains and promotes educational excellence across institutions. Through accreditation, the Commission mandates that member institutions meet rigorous and comprehensive standards. The accreditation process is designed to promote self-reflection and evaluation so that the College can assess how well we have been advancing our mission and institutional goals. The aim of the process is continual improvement. Since 2012, Hostos Community College’s accreditation was reaffirmed by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and looks forward to renewing the accreditation in 2022. The History of Latin Music & Latin Jazz Part XIV This Spring seminar series is a tribute to the history of Latin music and jazz and the musicians and artists who helped create it from the 1930’s to the present. This free seminar series will highlight the diversity of the music pioneers and their impact on the history of Latin music and jazz. Learn about the musicians and artists like Graciela, known as the First Lady of Latin Jazz, Ceila Cruz, Olga Guiott, Gloria Estefan, Enrique Jorrin, Johnny Rodriquez, Julio Gutiérrez and many others that helped create and influence the music of this time.

The series is hosted by Joe Conzo Sr., noted music historian, producer and author of Mambo Diablo: My Journey with Tito Puente. These seminars will broaden your knowledge of the genres and enlighten you as you hear and learn about the music and how it evolved from the 1930’s to now. The seminar will focus on latin music, the jazz era and the diverse artists who were influential in creating it, including the great Tito Puente. Special guests will periodically attend throughout the seminars series. The Tito Puente Exhibit is housed at Hostos and is available for viewing.

Career Success ScholarshipHelena Rubinstein Since 2011, the Helena Rubinstein Career Success Scholarship, created through an endowment from the Helena Rubinstein Foundation, has provided to its recipients up to 90% of tuition costs for continuing education certificate programs.

The scholarship, which is awarded every Fall and Spring semester, is open to individuals who seek to advance their careers through continuing education and training, and who cannot otherwise pay for tuition. Hostos CEWD Departments Liberty Partnerships Hostos Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program is a high school accredited, year-round academic and cultural enrichment program enhanced by career and support services. The program is funded by the NY State Education Department and serves over 300 students yearly from local high schools in the South Bronx. Students are comprised of all ethnic groups, primarily Latinos and African Americans. Special attention is given to students who are at-risk of graduating late or dropping out, including those with limited English proficiency. The program partners with CUNY, SUNY and several private universities along with community based organizations, cultural institutions and local businesses to form an innovative collaborative united in challenging students to excel both academically and socially. We integrate support services and career awareness with academic disciplines, while fostering the arts with our non-academic activities. Language Skills English Links Program

English Links is an intensive 200-hour English as a Second Language program for learners who already have a basic knowledge of English. The program is designed to prepare students for academic and professional success. An integrated skills approach is utilized with listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar components. Students learn how to communicate their ideas effectively, interact using academic discourse and apply their language skills to different situations and audiences for greater understanding and engagement. Students will conduct informational interviews, participate in class discussions and presentations, as well as attend content based field trips where English language skills learned in class will be utilized and applied to real life situations. This FREE program is designed to provide beginners and/or low intermediate English language learners with the knowledge, practical skills, certification and English language skills required to become Certified Home Health Aides (HHAs). HHAs assist patients in the activities of daily living and provide basic routine care. These activities can include providing assistance with eating, bathing, brushing teeth, administering medications, changing dressings/bandages, checking a patient’s temperature and pulse rate, as well as helping with artificial limbs or walking aids. Home healthcare agencies employ most HHAs by assigning them to patients’ private homes. HHAs can also work in continuing care facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers. ECG Telemetry Technician Certificate This course is designed to enhance the curriculum of current ECG students or those already EKG certified and is available to all RN’s, LPN’s, LVN's, Medical Assistants and Certified Nursing Assistants. Students will learn to interpret rhythms such as Atrial Fibrillation, Ventricular Tachycardia, Premature Ventricular and Atrial contractions, Type I, II and III heart blocks. Medical & Health Phlebotomy Technician Certificate This introductory course on the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from veins and capillaries is available to students who have a current NYS Certified Nurse Aide certificate, RN or LPN license. Clinical Medical Assistant The Clinical Medical Assistant program combines 129 hours of classroom training along with 120 hours externship to prepare students for employment as professional Clinical Medical Assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates of the program will be equipped to assist physicians with examinations, treatments, take medical histories, vital signs, phlebotomies, ekg’s and other clinical procedures. In addition, two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving math skills relevant to the program. Students will also learn the basic medical laws and ethics as they relate to OSHA and the HIPAA standards that ensure safety in the work place and patient privacy. The goal is to develop competent entry level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains. Local Anesthesia & Nitrous Oxide Administration Certificate Program The Department of Dental Hygiene at Hostos offers the Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Certificate Program in compliance with New York State law, in order to facilitate the NYS licensed dental hygienist's application for a Restricted Certificate in Local Infiltration Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervision of a dentist, to administer intra oral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxide analgesia to patients 18 years of age or older. This 45 hour fully approved course satisfies the didactic and clinical requirements for certification. The course will also include 2 classroom hours dedicated to improving English and vocabulary skills to ensure success in the field. Upon successful completion of the course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for certification through the NYS Education Department. Clinical skills practice will require students to participate as a patient and operator. Medical & Health Emergency Medical Technician Certificate Program The EMT-Basic program will provide you with the necessary skills to administer emergency pre-hospital care in common situations such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the symptoms of illness and injury and the application of proper procedures for emergency care. The curriculum follows the guidelines established by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Service, and includes Basic Life Saving (BLS) trauma care, medical/environmental operations and 7 practical exercises: patient assessment, airway management and oxygen administration, bleeding control and fracture management, traction splinting, spinal immobilization, shock management and defibrillation. Medical & Health Recovery Coaching Program Recovery Coaches support positive change by helping individuals re-entering society from treatment or the criminal justice system. Our goal is to assist in the avoidance of relapse, the building of community support for recovery and cultivating life goals such as relationships, work and education. Focusing on building the client’s strengths, coaches do not address past traumas, but rather provide expertise on future achievement. Similar to Life and Business Coaching, Recovery Coaching (also known as peer mentoring), provides assistance to clients in accessing clinical services. Recovery Coaching is non-clinical and does not involved the diagnosis or treatment of addiction or any mental health issues, as is the case for licensed addiction counselors. Ethics Consideration for CRPA Preparation Ethics Consideration for Recovery Coaches is a three-day training designed to help NEW Recovery Coaches develop guidelines for making ethical decisions. Medical & Health Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) Certificate Program

This program is designed to provide students the knowledge and skills required to perform the administrative functions of an entry level medical assistant in a variety of healthcare settings such as, medical offices, clinics and ambulatory care facilities. Medical & Health Central Sterile Processing Program

The program curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for the field of NEW Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply. Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile and nonsterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Students will also learn to operate sterilizing units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process. The program is comprised of three Modules. Module One - Introduce the primary responsibility of a Central Sterile Processing Technician. Emphasis is placed on preparation, storage and distribution of instruments, supplies and equipment, quality assurance and inventory management. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques. Module Two - Emphasis is placed on basic human anatomy, infection control, aseptic technique, sterile processing, decontamination and disinfection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques. Module Three - Provide job seeking skills and an overview of theoretical knowledge in preparation for CRCST certification. Medical & Health Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Certificate This 30-hour training and certification NEW course prepares individuals for a career in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) field as Pest Control Operators. This is a NY State Department of Environmental Conservation required course to become certified for the 7A Structural and Rodent Pest Control License. Professional Development Hostos Security Academy Security Officer Certification 8 & 16 Hours Begin your training with the mandatory 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course. This general introductory course is required in order to be hired as a security guard. AutoCAD Certificate Program AutoCAD (computer-aided design) is a software program used across a wide range of industries, especially in the fields of construction, engineering, graphic design and architecture. The objective of this course is to train students in the basics of orthographic projection theory and allow students to gain proficiency in creating engineering layouts through many hands-on exercises. Set up grids and snaps; create geometry using different coordinate systems 2-D geometric construction; use of command line; create working drawings By course end, students will have mastered the use of the CAD software and developed skills in 2D geometric construction, with a focus on mechanical drawing. Course Cancellation

Register for 2 or more classes: 5% discount. Seniors (62 years or older) and Hostos Retirees: 15% discount. HCC students, staff and alumni with valid ID card: 15% discount. Note: Only one discount applies.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. When courses are cancelled, students may transfer to another course or receive a full refund. All efforts will be made to contact students in the event of a course cancellation.

Tuition and Fees Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Students are not considered officially registered until they have completed their tuition payment. Most courses require the purchase of books. No personal checks accepted.

Changes in Program The Continuing Education Program reserves the right to cancel courses, make substitutions in faculty and change the days, times and locations of classes, if necessary. We are not responsible for misprints in catalogues, brochures and/or advertisements. In the event of an error, we will make every effort to provide you with the correct information. All courses depend on sufficient registration to operate. If a course is cancelled by the College, all registrants will receive a full refund.

Session Guarantee Bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances may cause the cancellation of a class session. Certificate Programs Certificates of successful completion are issued to all students who satisfactorily complete a Certificate Program. Certificates are withheld pending receipt of all outstanding tuition and fees.

Delinquent Payments The College reserves the right to withhold the privileges of class attendance, use of facilities and services and access to certificates of completion from students with delinquent payments.

Non-Discrimination Notice Refund/Withdrawal Request for a refund or credit must be submitted in writing together with a copy of the registration receipt. Lack of attendance does not constitute withdrawal and eligibility for a refund or credit. There will be a 100% refund if a class is cancelled by the College. Registration fees are non-refundable unless class is cancelled by the College. Credits must be claimed within the current semester of student's registration. Credits must be used within 6 months from the date issued. Refunds must be requested before class start. Allow 3-5 weeks for refund/credit processing.

Normas y Procedimientos Descuentos en la Matricula

Cancelación de Clases

Si se matricula a dos o más clases: 5% de descuento. Para personas mayores (de 62 años de edad o más), y jubilados Hostos: 15% de descuento. Para estudiantes, personal y ex alumnos de HCC que presenten una tarjeta de identificación valida: 15% de descuento. Solamente se permite un tipo de descuento para cada persona.

Los cursos están sujetos a un mínimo de estudiantes matriculados. Cuando se cancele algún curso, los estudiantes pueden transferirse a otro curso o recibir un reembolso total. Todo esfuerzo sera realizado para contactar a los estudiantes si la clase es cancelada.

Tarifa de Registración Hay una tarifa sin devolución de $25 para cada persona, cada semestre.

Matricula y Costos Los estudiantes se matricularán por orden de llegada. Los estudiantes no se consideran oficialmente matriculados hasta que no hayan pagado el precio total. La mayoría de cursos requieren la compra de libros. No se aceptan cheques personales.

Cambios en el Programa El Programa de Educación Continua para adultos se reserva el derecho de cancelar cursos, sustituir profesores, cambiar los días, horas y lugares de clases si fuera necesario. Las tarifas de matricula no se reembolsarán a no ser que Hostos cancele la clase. El crédito debe utilizarse en un plazo de 6 meses a partir de la fecha de emisión. Todo reembolso debe ser sometido antes de el comienzo de clase. Permita de 3 a 5 semanas de trabajo para procesar.
