H
ow many times have you been asked about your motorcycle? Whether that bike of yours has been crazily customized so much that most folks can’t even tell what year or model it is, or if it is relatively box stock with a shiny new paint scheme, men, women, boys, and girls of all ages like to talk to us about our V-twin machines. I am sure most of you can attest that at just about every gas stop, diner, dive bar, or convenience store we have plenty of questions to answer regarding what’s been done to our rides to make them so attractive to Joe and Jane Public. How many times have you been by a gas pump or on a barstool chatting about your bike to somebody whose family member has had a Harley or Indian? And stop me if you have heard this one before: “My dad used to have a bike just like that, but it was red with a different motor.” Yes, this is funny stuff, but it also holds a lot of weight when it comes to being bikers and custom motorcycle enthusiasts like we are. All of these on-thespot Q&A sessions we have with the non-riding public makes us all brand ambassadors at a small level. We all know the ins and outs of our bikes and what was fabricated and modified on them. We (usually) gladly tell the wide-eyed folks asking us questions regarding the hows and whys of how the bike came to its present state. We are experts on the brand of bike we ride and the reasoning behind why we ride the particular model we do. Folks like us are just good ol’ red-blooded American V-twin motorcycle fanatics. And you all know this statement is true. This custom motorcycle thing is more than a hobby. It’s more than a piece of twowheeled transportation, and it’s much more than a lifestyle. We seem to always know more about the bikes we buy off the showroom floor than the person selling it to us. Hell, sometimes we even know the parts used to upgrade our motorcycles better than the companies who manufactured them in the first place. With all of this said, like it or not I feel we have a responsibility to represent ourselves as independent brand emissaries for who and what we feel are the best companies in the motorcycle business. Knowledge is power, my brothers and sisters, and so is teaching folks that we aren’t just a bunch of tattooclad dirt bags but really have a vast knowledge of the bikes we choose to ride and why. It’s a thankless job but one I feel we do already at every stop sign and on every corner. JEFF G. HOLT EDITOR IN CHIEF

Mk45 Muffler/Header Package High flow cats have long been available in the 4 wheel performance segment, but until now had eluded the motorcycle space. Today we have corrected that inequality. Power without compromise was our goal in designing the El Dorado system, which combines a completely new version of our two into two header (now stainless steel with revised crossover chamber) and a set of our 4.5" Mk45 mufflers with newly developed high flow cats. The result is a system that makes horsepower, torque and an exhaust note that your bike was born to sing. • 50-State legal • Stainless steel tube • Independent dual look with hidden crossover • Full chrome or black heat shielding • Exhaust port gaskets included • 2009-2016 Touring models (2017 coming soon) • CARB EO# K-010

“ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF OWNING A MOTORCYCLE IS MEETING AND CREATING A NETWORK OF OTHER LIKE-MINDED GUYS AND GALS.”
101 The one and only Troy Hoff.
O
ne of the best parts of owning a motorcycle is meeting and creating a network of other like-minded guys and gals. One of the best places to meet up with folks of similar interests is the bike night. A bike night is where riders show off their bikes either at a restaurant, bar, or other designated location usually once a week or month. Bike nights don’t have to be that elaborate, but some bike nights can include stunt riders, bike shows, bikini contests, giveaways, and so much more. The most common ones are at the local watering hole with anywhere from five to 100 bikes showing up regularly. I attended several weeks at a local Long Beach, California, restaurant organized by Jim Conley for about six months before they unexpectedly closed their door. It was right down the street from my house and had a great atmosphere and group of people. Sometimes it was big; sometimes it was smaller. Either way it was a great chance to meet several readers face to face as well as find a few bikes to feature in this magazine! I’d thought I’d take this opportunity to share some of the photos of the good folks I met along the way. HB

TOOLS
2. OIL DRAIN PAN
If your bike came with a chain or you’ve done a conversion, do yourself a favor and get a proper chain tool. You’ll save yourself a heap load of time and frustration trying to attach that master link without chasing the little clip all over the garage. For just less than $140, this tool from RK will save your sanity and your fingers. rkexcelamerica.com
Motorcycles are different than cars in the sense that you can easily fit a lift in your garage without taking up much real estate. This 1,000-pound lift from Harbor Freight is foot operated and costs a tick under $430. harborfreight.com

4. SERVICE MANUAL I’ve found that most videos on YouTube are either too detailed or full of crap. Unless you want to painstakingly watch a 20-minute clip on how to change a tire by a wannabe filmmaker shooting in his basement, buy a proper service manual for your bike. Prices vary but it’s worth every penny. harley-davidson.com
Taking your bike to the dealer every time it needs a service can get expensive fast. Changing the oil is fairly simple and can save you a bundle in the long run. This Low Profile Oil Drain Pan from big H-D is just over $30 and will pay for itself the first time you use it.
5. BASIC TOOL SET It’s hard to compile a must-have list without tools. Tools are just like your bike. You can spend a little or you can spend a lot. Craftsman tools are readily available, come in all sizes, and are easily returnable. Even though you have an H-D, don’t forget to purchase metrics as well, as many parts are being switched over. Prices start at around $60 and go up from there.

6. BATTERY CHARGER
sears.com
There’s nothing worse than the sound of “were-were-were-click-click” when you go to start your bike. A battery tender will make sure that the battery will always be as juiced up as you are when you are ready to ride. C-Tek offers a wide variety of chargers for a wide variety of batteries and start at about $60 and go up from there.

SIGNET-X EL CRANEO BLUE FROST HELMET I have a big, fat 7-1/2 head and always end up wearing an XL. I’ve worn the most expensive helmets money can buy to the ones that barely pass DOT. I’ve learned it’s not the cost of the helmet that makes a difference in comfort, but it’s the construction. The Signet-X is specifically designed to fit a long-oval head, and I fell in love with it from the initial time I slipped it on. With almost a slunk-like feeling, I knew it immediately it had made its way to the front of the line of all my other helmets. The initial road test involved heading out to Laughlin, Nevada, from Long Beach, California, for roughly a 600-mile roundtrip through both city, highway, and two-lane desert roads. For starters, the helmet is extremely quiet with the shield down and all the vents closed. This was instantly apparent, as I could hear the music coming from my 2017 Indian Limited stereo clear enough to understand the lyrics when typically all you hear is Charlie Brown teacher noises. When the temperature went up, all it took were a few brushes with a gloved hand while going 60-plus mph to figure out how to open and close the vents. I’ve had helmets that cooled my head better, but with increased air comes increased noise. The Signet-X is a “Goldilocks” amount of flow that was just about right. Graphics on the Signet-X line vary from solid colors, Super-Joe racer dude, to this El Craneo Blue Frost model featuring traditional Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls. I have a traditional skull tattooed on my wrist from about six years ago, and the graphic matched almost identically.
At $829.95 it’s an expensive lid for sure. But if it’s one place you shouldn’t sacrifice money for safety, it’s your head. The Arai line is at the top of the food chain when it comes to quality, and with proper care this helmet should last for years. araiamericas.com
ALPINESTARS J-8 RIDING SHOE
The Alpinestars J-8 doesn’t claim to be a riding boot. If you want the ultimate in foot protection, Alpinestars protects the feet of MotoGP riders who crash at 200 mph. What I love the J-8 for is everyday riding back and forth to work or for quick trips around town. It’s more about when I get off the bike that I want something that is comfortable and doesn’t have me looking like Cyborg ready for battle. The J-8 is a breathable riding shoe that keeps your laces from going haywire, are perforated for cool piggies, and has an internal toe box and heel counter reinforcement. The previous version was only available in loud colors that had most people saying, “Next!” These all-black versions are as cool as night, and if you don’t want some added flair you can get them with optional brown or red accents. I put more than 5,000 miles on the previous versions, and I’m confident the J-8s will spread the $159.95 price of admission over several rides. If you’re looking for something better than sneakers but more comfortable than a boot, the Alpinestars J-8 might be the Cinderella you’ve been looking for. alpinestars.com

SOFTAILS HARLEY’S FOR 2018 BIKES AT A GLANCE

ALL-NEW T
A NEW ENGINE IN AN ALL-NEW CHASSIS o celebrate its 115th anniversary year, Harley-Davidson has launched eight allnew Softail models. The new bikes feature a stiffer and significantly lighter frame built for the torque of the new dual-counterbalanced Milwaukee-Eight 107 and 114 engines. The bikes also come with a high-performance front suspension and an adjustable hidden rear monoshock, replacing the aged and untunable pull shocks of past Softails. These upgraded 2018 Softail models are 65-percent stiffer, substantially lighter, and from what the MoCo says, they’re better handling than any of this model’s predecessors. We will be road testing all of these new Softails real soon and will let you know our thoughts on them. So stay tuned! HB

“PINTER DOESN’T JUST RIDE CUSTOM MOTORCYCLES; HE IS NOW TAKING HIS SELF-TAUGHT CAR BUILDING AND METALWORKING ABILITIES AND PUTTING THEM TOWARD HIS LATEST TWO-WHEELED PURSUITS.”
I
have known Heath Pinter for a gang of years—first from BMX, then from the tattoo and hot rod scene, and finally from riding custom motorcycles. Anyone who knows Mr. Pinter can tell you he is a genuine kind of guy who wears his heart on his sleeve and is always out for one hell of a good time. That doesn’t mean he is a punk-rock pushover or a slacker by any means. Pinter is a family man, a businessman, and an entrepreneur. He’s also still one hell of a badass BMX rider many years after most of his battered and bruised brethren have hung the bike up. Pinter resides in SoCal, but he can be seen all over the globe riding anything with two wheels in the dirt, on concrete, or on the asphalt like he was born with it under him. But Pinter doesn’t just ride custom motorcycles; he is now taking his self-taught car building and metalworking abilities and putting them toward his latest two-wheeled pursuits. He’s got a great eye for style and the correct knowledge to fabricate whatever he wants, and we can’t wait to see what comes out of the mind, hands, and torch of Pinter next. Check him out at @heathpinter on Instagram and Twitter. HB

his bike came to me a few years ago pretty much stock with the typical sweet, old-man modifications like a windshield, clamp-on aux lights, etc. It was the perfect candidate for building a solid runner. It turns out this story is one of those classic ones that just when you thought your bike was done, it’s not! I had this bike set up how I wanted it when my friend Otto called me to discuss working with Gigacycle as their West Coast dealer. I accepted his offer; it worked out with a new Corsair D front end en route to me for install and R&D. This one thing completely changed everything! All the parts that had gone into making my bike what it was at this point no longer looked correct to me. It was time to step my game up. I decided to put together a budget-build bike that is affordable to the common working man and built almost entirely from the catalog on our website speed-kingscycle.com.

FOREFRONT | SPEED-KINGS CYCLE’S 2007 FXD “ALMOST EVERY PART ON THIS BIKE CAME FROM OUR OWN WEBSITE AND REALLY SHOWCASES WHAT WE DO AS A COMPANY HERE AT SPEED-KINGS CYCLE SUPPLY.”
Our first move was to toss out our old and upgrade to the RWD FXRT fairing. This really set the mood for this bike and matched well with the Gigacycle Corsair D front end. We then decided to go for the full FXDRT look with the JD Clam Shells and the Speed-Kings hoop crash bar. Once we mocked everything up we knew this was it. We then tore it down and drove out to Landers, California, to drop everything off with Joel England for paint. We had talked prior, and I said he could have free range and that I only wanted to maintain black and silver. He had finished the paint in seven days and sent me a picture of his masterpiece, and I was blown away! Almost every part on this bike came from our own website and really showcases what we do as a company here at Speed-Kings Cycle Supply. We put this bike together to be a daily runner, reliable, comfortable, and always ready to crush miles. I’d like to give a big thanks to Ryan Loughridge (@_loughridge_) for always snapping pics of the bikes, Otto at Biltwell Inc. for always helping out, Tim at Gigacycle Garage for countless late-night conversations and making sure this bike wasn’t done until it was done, and Joel England (@joel845) for knocking the paint out of the park. eorge Stinsman is the lead builder and owner, along with his wife Dee, of Chaos Cycle in Long Island, New York. Our customer Darius is a well-known photographer who has a strong interest in black culture and history of motorcycles. He came to us and asked us to replicate a ’60s-style chopper with some modern touches and immediately a Sugar Bear springer came to mind. I’ve been wanting to build a bike around one of his front ends for years. We started with a 40-inch over Sugar Bear springer with his unique rockers and had Anthony from Chassis Design build a frame to match. Then we took the frame and modified it to incorporate oil coolers in the downtubes to give a little extra flair to the frame and add some functionality. Once the frame was all set we placed the fresh Shovelhead in it along with the Baker Frank and tranny and went to work on all the bracketry under the transmission oil tank. After we got it up and rolling, we started to make the tins in-house. I had long admired a caliper Greg Westbury had made for his Biker Build-Off bike, so I gave him a call and asked him if he had anymore. Coincidently he had recently disassembled the bike and was willing to sell me the actual one he used. Next, we built a very

minimalistic sissy bar and sat Darius on the bike to set the handlebars just right inside some Indian Larry throwback risers. We fabricated a seat pan and sent it to the best in the business for some leatherwork by Christian at Xian Leather, and once again he killed it. The tins went out to Ryzart for some candy magic paintwork. If you tried to follow the graphics with your eyes it might make you dizzy. Finally, we topped it off with a f—king gas cap from Speed Dealer. One of our goals was to keep the bike as skinny and narrow as possible, so we made some tight-fit exhaust pipes shotgun style that were tucked in tight once everything was fabricated. We sent the frame out to Prismatic Powder Coat for some liquid black, and all the chrome went out to Bar Plating in Connecticut. Darius is a tall guy so we were able to build a very stretched-out and raked motorcycle to fit him, as he is one of the few people who is even able to ride this bike. I’m only 5-foot-8, so I couldn’t even test ride the bike after it was done. We had to have Darius come do the shakedown runs as I made adjustments. The end result was an 11-1/2-foot-long motorcycle that anybody who has seen Darius can attest rules the streets of Brooklyn. HB

F BOMB BAGGERS: I’m a big fan of the old nostalgic looks from the ’50s and ’60s and figured I’d try my best to get a newer bike to look old. I guess it’s a matter of trying to make it look both like an old-school chopper and a bagger. It starts with the old-school look towards the front, and you get a taste of new school when it gets to the back with the Black Label bag setup. HB: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART? spoke wheel. I always believe less is more when it comes to the big-wheel baggers. We are already getting shit and haters left and right, so I always try to make them clean and simple. I think the biggest compliment is when an older rider comes up to me and says I’m not a fan of this big-wheel shit but I dig this bike. Another touch was just adding a simple red stripe on the front wheel that really peeks it out. When it was finally buttoned up I hit up Brian at Sinister and told him to do it old school, and it couldn’t have come out better—just the clean, simple, ’50s look. A seat should never stick out on a bike; it should just perfectly blend in with the whole bike, and this one did it.

HB: WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE BUILD? FBB: Really, with it being a non-fairing bike, it keeps it on the easy side. If anything, just hoping the scheme was going to work was the biggest question. Once people started stopping by the shop and dropping the “F bomb” when seeing it we knew it was good to go.

ike builders are a special breed. Whether it’s the backwoods of a remote town buried deep in middle America or all the way from a foreign country like Japan, each builder has its own unique style and way of building custom bikes. Originally from Fukuoka, Japan, Aki has had a passion specifically for Harley-Davidson motorcycles since he was a young man. His desire to work on motorcycles brought him to the US in 1995. Hog Killers was opened in January of 2009 after years of apprenticeship and
working under the direction of Jesse James. Today Aki is one of the staples of the custom chopper scene, and his work is easily recognizable and well respected. This 1961 Harley-Davidson FLH is the perfect example of one of his clean and correct custom builds. When asked why he built this bike like he did, Aki responded, “I was shooting for a simple and clean chopper. This is my favorite setup: jockey shift and suicide clutch with no front brake.”

The motor is a 1961 74ci Panhead that was massaged by Aki with Andrews cams, Vida air cleaner, and an S&S Super E feeding the fuel. He then fabbed up a tank, fenders, and bars in the classic chopper style. A custom exhaust features great use of stainless and black, including custom piping for heat shields, winged ends, and custom tips. The frame was built with a stainless neck, motor mounts, and axle plates. Aki fabricated several pieces of stainless through the bike because, “I love the way polished stainless stands out in gloss black paint.” There is a right way to make a bike that will stand the test of time and a wrong way that is quickly forgotten. What separates this from others is its lack of unnecessary clutter and extreme attention to detail. Tip to tail this ’61 Panhead is just a great example of a clean, proper chopper. HB

his bike came to be because I traded a buddy a 1948 Hudson that I put on a 1994 Cadillac chassis for this turbocharged Knucklehead and transmission. The story with the motor goes that it was built in the early ’90s with the intent of taking it to the salt flats to attempt the land-speed record for the world’s fastest Knucklehead. Sadly, the guy who was supposed to ride it committed suicide by stepping off of his nitro-injected Panhead and hanging himself. The motor was then passed to a friend of his who was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away. From there, my friend got it and wasn’t ever able to do anything with it. It was supposed to be a 200-hp turbocharged, 5-inch stroke, 113ci Knucklehead. I had the driveline in the corner of the shop for almost a year before I decided it needed to be built.

We started with the back half of an aftermarket Softail frame and a stock swingarm a buddy gave me. The whole build time from when we set the frame on the lift to the first show was only 10 weeks. My dad and I spent 18 to 19 hours a day, seven days a week to get it finished. Shane Gilsdorf put in an enormous number of hours trying to get this Frankenstein of a motor to actually run. We had some great help from friends at the end to get it finished in time. Design wise, I figured that Softails are up and coming, so we decided to just go all the way with the first one by laying frame, running a 26-inch wheel with a turbocharged Knucklehead. I have never really liked the Softail suspensions, so I took our FL-style shocks and mounted them on top of the swingarm. I decided to do copper after seeing a flat-black diesel ’54 Cadillac at SEMA with all-copper trim. We also build hot rods, so the car influence is heavy with us. We will take the shop on field trips to the old car junkyards and just look around for miscellaneous parts we can use on bikes. For instance, the headlight is from a 1935 Ford, the dash is off of a 1958 Ford hood, and the spot lamps are original 1930s aftermarket fog lamps. The kicker pedal I had on it (but broke it) was a turn signal housing from a 1941 Oldsmobile. The taillight was a fender-mounted rearview mirror from a mid-’60s Cadillac. We love the old-school way of building. All of the sheet metal, minus the front fender and the front half of the back fender, was made from flat sheets of 18-gauge steel that I hand formed on the power hammer and English wheel. The backbone and downtubes of the frame I bent using the receiver hitch of my truck. During the build, we posted videos on our Facebook to document the chaos.

When it came time to paint it, we couldn’t decide if the bike was going to be green or blue or burgundy. I painted everything in large orange flake (our hot rod disease coming out). Then I laid out the silver and blue graphics on the fly with no real plan. After that, Steve Gillette came in and pinstriped and lettered everything. I then stood over the paint/fab/bodywork table and had a can of Green Candy and a can of Blue Candy on the table. I closed my eyes and grabbed one and it turned out to be the blue. Little did I know until after I sprayed it, when the sun hits the paint, it turns green. So, I guess we got both colors after all. I never believed in “cursed” things before, but after this thing, I’m starting to reconsider. I can’t say enough about all the people around me who have helped make this shop and this build work. First and foremost are my parents who came out of retirement to help me as if it were their own. And my wife, who brings our kids and supper to the shop every night so that we can have a couple hours of family time a day. Jen and Tommy make the shop tic every day without fail and my friends who, after some beer bribes, always end up showing up when it’s crunch time. HB

BOBBIN’ WEAVIN’ AND
2018 INDIAN SCOUT BOBBER EXCLUSIVE FIRST TEST RIDE
54 / HOTBIKE.COM
WORDS: JEFF G. HOLT PHOTOS: JEFF G. HOLT AND TIM SUTTON
A
s you know we at Hot Bike are not really into the box-stock bike test and review game, but when Indian approached me for an exclusive first ride test for the magazine I thought to myself, “What could it hurt?” Even though it was water-cooled and didn’t really have any sort of classic lines of the Scouts of old, I didn’t hate the previous model first released in 2015. But I did have my fair share of issues with it. See, I am not your typical magazine editor when it comes to dealing with testing and reviewing factory-fresh motorcycles. When I first look at any stock bike I really can’t help to pick it apart with my eyes and fight the urge to start pulling, hacking, and cutting most of the OEM parts off it until I get something that can be customized to its full potential. Once I throw a leg over the same box-stock machine I immediately start critiquing the ergonomics and cursing the engineers and designers for doing whatever they did to irk me. And that is usually a lot of things. Then I kick the bike into first gear and really let the games begin. And so begins my test of the 2018 Indian Scout Bobber… The Scout Bobber is powered by a 69ci (1,133cc) liquid-cooled fuel-injected V-twin and delivers 100 hp and 72 pound-feet at 6,000 rpm. The Scout Bobber breathes
in with a healthy 60mm throttle body and exits those spent gasses easily thanks to a blacked-out and louvered dual exhaust, which also has a built-in crossover to even everything out. I can say that this motor is very lively in its stock form, and after three years of looking at it in the other Scout, its looks have really grown on me. The bike rolls on a set of blacked-out aluminum “mag” 16 x 3.5 wheels wrapped in vintage-style knobby 130/9016 73H front and 150/80-16 71H rear tires. For those of you wanting a more classic look, there is a spoked-wheel upgrade available through Indian’s parts and accessories line available through its ever-growing dealership network. Braking is done by a single 298mm rotor with a twopiston caliper up front and a single-piston caliper with the same size rotor in the rear. There is also an ABS option for $1,000 more. Suspension is handled by a 4.7-inch (120mm) travel cartridge-type telescopic front fork and a set of dual 2-inch travel progressively wound coil-over shocks out back. The low-slung shocks faired pretty well over the famously rough Los Angeles freeways. Even on the infamous pothole-ridden 710 Long Beach freeway and expansions of the Vincent Thomas Bridge the combination of puffy tires and factory-tuned suspension did far better than I imagined. OCTOBER 2017 / 55
FIRST RIDE | 2018 INDIAN SCOUT BOBBER FOR MORE PHOTOS OF THIS BIKE VISIT HOTBIKE.COM
Ergonomically the bike sits comfortably low for my 5-foot-10 height with a 25.6-inch seat height, and with its 29-degree rake and 4.7 inches of trail the bike handles extremely well both in slow stop-and-go traffic as well as fast speeds on the open road. With its 29-degree lean angle it carves canyons very well, and with its 61.5-inch wheelbase the Scout Bobber whips in and out of traffic and handles dicey lane-splitting like a wheeled rocket. The Scout Bobber has a multi-piece modular frame using both aluminum and steel. The Scout Bobber weighs in at 550 pounds with its 3.3-gallon gas tank topped off. This is a very agreeable weight for a bike in this category, and I am sure the low weight also helped greatly in how spryly this machine handled the various tarmac tests I put it though. Some of the other simple standouts of the bike were a set of handlebars that didn’t at all feel like most of the horrible bends and rises we see on factory bikes and a small yet ample seat. What didn’t I like about the bike, you ask? Although I do like the 7/8-inch controls, I am not a big fan of how they are styled. I think the levers are too long and the switches look too “metric.” Those of us in many states out west have experienced getting pulled over for the license plate being on the left side of the bike. This plate placement is totally legal in all 50 states, but getting stopped still happens due to many police and highway patrol officers not knowing the correct DOT laws regarding doing so.
56 / HOTBIKE.COM
And then there’s the Scout’s foot-control placement. When I rode the first Scout back in 2015, the forward controls just didn’t fit the bike or my style of riding. I do understand that more folks relate V-twin bikes of any size with stretched-out seating and leg placement, but to have such a great-handling bike with forwards just detracts from the full potential of this bike. It’s a good thing that the Scout Bobber has decreased-length forward controls that work well and that there are a few aftermarket mid-control options available for folks wanting them. When I was told this bike was going to be called the Bobber I immediately felt my brow wrinkle and could feel my blood pressure rise. These actions happened due to the fact that I feel that this very term “Bobber” is probably the most misunderstood and misused moniker in the history of American-made motorcycles. It used to be a designation for a type of bike that defined post-war custom motorcycles and the folks who rode them. Now it is just a designation to sell a bike to a certain cross section of consumers. And for some reason I still take offense to that after all these years. With that said, is this variation of the Indian Scout a “Bobber” in any sense? No. Is it a great bike that looks pretty damn custom from the factory and rides far better than any other V-twin at its price? I would have to say yes. And, really, what’s in a name anyway? HB

iders come in all shapes and sizes. When HarleyDavidson makes a motorcycle, it has to fit the greatest amount of people in the most common size. Then, aftermarket companies can come in and let the rider fine-tune the bike to fit their exact specifications. There’s nothing like those minute details that make the ride perfect for a specific person. The KlipHanger Pullback Bars from Klock Werks allow the rider to adjust the bars after being installed either closer, wider, higher, or lower easily with just four bolts. e have been hearing for a few years about an Italian-made exhaust known as Red Thunder. After many failed attempts we finally got our grubby hands on one to test on our 2015 H-D Dyna Low Rider. After hearing good things from the few folks in the US who had this pipe on their bikes, we knew we had to get an intake to match the upgraded performance exhaust. After a bit of thought we went with the tried-and-true Arlen Ness Bike Sucker due to the good luck we have had with them in the past as well as the unit’s classic good looks. Next month we will be putting the bike on the dyno and getting some real numbers, so stay tuned, but for now check out how we went about installing these simple yet effective bolt-on upgrades. HB

The X-Wave WP starts with full-grain leather construction backed with a flexible waterproof membrane (the WP stands for “waterproof”) making the boots impervious to the elements. TCX also did a great job of making the X-Wave slim and trim even though they have some serious heel and toe protective reinforcements hiding within them. When I first received the boots I laced them up and they immediately felt like I had been wearing the X-Wave for weeks. This, as we all
64 / HOTBIKE.COM
know, is a rare occurrence when it comes to riding footwear. I went for a 100-mile test ride minutes after getting them on and noticed a few things about the CE-approved X-Wave shoes. The sole of this boot/shoe is a firm yet pliable rubber that works on wet or dry surfaces without fail. This shoe also has a good deal of ankle protection and reinforcement, but it in no way impedes any sort of comfort when shifting/braking or just walking around all day, which you can in these shoes. Yes, the X-Wave does have a couple things that give it away as a Euro boot, such as the red accents and faux vintage leather finish treatment, but all in all when a pair of jeans are cuffed to the ankle, they look just like a pair of normal everyday high-tops similar to the Vans Sk8-Hi shoe or all-black leather Converse, but they offer much more protection without looking like a big-ass clunky pair of boots. HB
“WHEN A PAIR OF JEANS ARE CUFFED TO THE ANKLE, THEY LOOK JUST LIKE A PAIR OF NORMAL EVERYDAY HIGH-TOPS SIMILAR TO THE VANS SK8-HI SHOE OR ALL-BLACK LEATHER CONVERSE, BUT THEY OFFER MUCH MORE PROTECTION WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE A BIG-ASS CLUNKY PAIR OF BOOTS.”

his cover from October 1985 proves that the classics stand the test of time and trends. Dave Mackie is still making V-twins scream with big power. Simpson helmets have been updated with technology but still have that classic style. Hill climbs are still as scary as ever. The only question is how/ why does the rider have one foot on the ground?

ere is my super-clean 2017 Harley-Davidson FXDL. It has custom paint by an award-winning painter, lots of powdercoating, show chrome wheels and pulley, mirror polished rotors, custom seat, Progressive Suspension, and chrome hardware everywhere. For the motor it has heads, cams, exhaust, and V&H FP3. I also added Arlen Ness grips, pegs, shift peg, mirrors, and black levers. It has lots of details all with 1 mile on the odometer.

GARAGE BUILT
T
he donor bike for this project was a 2005 Harley Sportster 1,200c that I picked up for $2,750. You can see from the photo it was a pretty nice used bike. I cut the back end off the bike and installed a hardtail bobber kit from Ryca Motors. The gas tank was from Pandemonium Custom Choppers. The exhaust was from Led Sled Customs. I put a Dynajet Thunderslide kit in the carb with an S&S air cleaner. The frame powdercoating was done by GT Fabrication and the silver paint by local painter Gary Martinelli. Altogether I spent about $7,300 (price of the bike included) to arrive at the finished product. I did the work in my garage over this past winter.

IF YOU HAVE A DUMB HEAD, THE REST OF YOUR BODY SUFFERS
“I
f you have a dumb head, the rest of your body suffers.” That nugget of wisdom was laid on me by a wise man named Gilbert Holt, father of Hot Bike Editorin-Chief Jeff G. Holt, as we deepfried some shrimp in his kitchen one night. Senior Holt’s words ran though my mind loud and clear on a recent commute into the office aboard one of the Hot Bike test motorcycles. As I loped along at a leisurely pace on the freeway, a familiar rumble of a small-displacement V-twin ripped by me at triple-digit speeds in a rather wobbly state. I caught enough of a visual to notice the rider was on a new bike with a dealer plate, new boots, new helmet, new leather jacket, and, well, new everything. Their reckless riding was the “dumb” part. A handful of miles down the freeway when traffic started to get heavy I pulled off to enjoy the splendor that is gasstation coffee and donuts. I geared up and entered the freeway a few minutes later wondering why I continue to submit my stomach to such brutal budget delicacies. That was my “dumb” part. Traffic was stopped. Not the bumperto-bumper 10-mph stuff that is the regular during the morning crunch at this particular interchange, but it was not moving at all. It was a scene straight out of a zombie movie. I finessed my

way through the planted autos to where the cause of this melee was. I scoped out highway patrol cars spread out, road flares galore, an ambulance, and an 18-wheeler in a nearly jackknifed position. There were some rather lengthy skid marks leading up to where it rested. I then noticed two cars in front of it that were smashed up tip to tail like the losers in a demolition derby at a state fair. I then had a dreadful feeling in my gut, partly because of the Kwik Stop caffeine but mostly because I sensed the rider who had blazed by me earlier in a blur of new chrome, paint, and leather was somehow involved. Painfully, I caught a glimpse of that brand-new machine off to the side of the whole accident scene. It was laid down on the shoulder of the freeway with bent forks, various parts dangling by wires, and some deep gouges on that shiny chrome and paint. I could only hope the rider fared better. That was

their “suffering” part. I don’t exactly know what happened. If I had to bet I would say the rider’s overly excessive speed for the conditions was a contributing factor to the outcome regardless if they caused it or were a victim of it. Unfortunately I have had this same scenario play out in front of me a handful of other times the past two to three years on my daily commutes. In those other instances the riders and bikes looked like veterans of the road. It’s not just newer riders who can learn riding lessons the hard way. After making sure the rider was being attended to by paramedics and checking in on their condition, which wasn’t life threatening, I made my way into the office. I got within a few miles of Hot Bike headquarters and had to suddenly exit to use a restroom at a restaurant. That cheap-o coffee and donuts had done a number to my insides. That was my “suffering” part. As with everything in life, the choices you make have an effect on the outcome of the situation at hand. I advise that if you are going to be dumb, keep it off of the motorcycle and go more along with my bad decisions. The suffering from overly bitter coffee and stale donuts goes away in only a few hours. Maybe that’s why I keep on doing it to myself. Mmm, donuts. HB
