BUYER BE WARY
I’VE SAID IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN. BIKERS ARE
THE BEST GROUP OF PEOPLE YOU ARE EVER GOING TO MEET. SURE, THERE ARE A FEW RATS AND SNAKES IN THE MIX, BUT FOR THE MOST PART, WE ARE THE REAL SAINTS AMONG A WORLD OF CAGE-DRIVING SINNERS.
The public at large might look at us strangely and feel the need to stereotype us as being uneducated and unkempt, but you and I both know that is all just a load of bulls—t. Our burly, bearded, and tattooed brethren of the past may have projected that label strongly, but have you seen the number of people of all ages, creeds, colors, and sexes currently riding American V-twins all over this country of ours? There is no way the world of prudes and straights can pigeonhole us as just the same group of “bikers” any longer. It just can’t happen in this day and age. We are not just hairy guys on bikes with sleeveless shirts, loud pipes, and do-rags anymore. In fact, we are such a wide demographic of riders that it seems almost unreal for a guy who has been reporting on the biker lifestyle for this long. Big business is looking more and more into our demographics to better understand our way of being and, most of all, our spending habits. And I am not talking about companies and businesses inside the custom-bike building
and riding realm. I am talking about big corporations worldwide. Nonmotorized companies are on the hunt for us so they can sell us toilet paper, popcorn, automobiles, clothing, and even products for children, such as diapers and strollers. See, yuppies might call us scumbags, and metric bike riders think we are insane for riding air-cooled classically styled motorcycles. But highly educated corporate marketing folks call us brand loyalists. And they love our sort because we are no-nonsense buyers who usually stick with purchasing what we know and love. We start buying these items from young adulthood, and usually, we stick to the same brands for the rest of our lives. These same aforementioned companies and marketing firms also like that we are an opinionated bunch who don’t get too into trends and the latest fashions. Yes, we of course live in a time where most of our spending activities are monitored online and in the real world no matter how sporadic one’s spending habits may be. But I can bet you that we are at the top of the heap to many of these businesses due to what we buy and why. I like to jokingly call us apex consumers. We live a lifestyle that is free of most other types of people’s trappings and their level of wishy-washy consumerism. We as a group spend our hard-earned money on what we want and when we want, no matter if we are rich or poor. Think about what you buy and why. I am almost sure you haven’t switched brands of peanut butter in the past decade, and I sure as hell know you aren’t riding a Yamaha. HB JEFF G. HOLT

GREAT GEAR PACKED WITH PERFORMANCE
1. ROLAND SANDS DESIGN TRENT JACKET
This jacket has much more going on with it than good looks. The lightweight textile jacket is constructed using a mix of Kevlar and Cordura fabrics for some super abrasion protection. Inside the jacket’s satin lining are CE-approved Level 1 elbows and shoulder armor and a back-protector pocket. We found the Trent jacket to be much more versatile than it looks. For riding in cold or wet weather, the Trent has a water-resistant “aqua guard” zipper by YKK as well as a removable heavy-duty fleece hood. For riding in the heat, the Trent jacket also has a large back vent and a pair of shoulder intake vents to keep you cool. The construction and fit of this jacket are very nice, and it doesn’t have a bunch of unneeded features and shiny crap hanging off of it like so many other current offerings in the motorcycle marketplace. $525 // rolandsands.com
2. BELL
RACE STAR RSD CHIEF HELMET It seems as if Bell has kept its iconic Star name and changed up just about everything else regarding this helmet. The Race Star’s wind-tunnel-designed outer shell is composed of a 3K carbon shell, which means it’s both light and strong. Bell has also upped the tech on the Race Star with the addition of Bell’s proprietary Flex Impact Liner, which is a three-layer combination designed specifically to handle different types of impacts using various layered materials. Once we pulled the helmet on, we immediately liked the Panovision shield due to its very viewable area both vertically and laterally. We also enjoyed the look and feel of the liner and easily swappable magnetic cheek pads. And, yes, this feature-packed lightweight skid lid meets or exceeds Snell M2015 and DOT certifications — and looks good doing it. $749 // bellhelmets.com

GEEKED BLU TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM
W
e all know that having proper tire inflation is key to proper bike handling and on-road safety. Most car (and some motorcycle) manufacturers now have models with monitoring sensors built in. The bikes we build and ride here at Hot Bike have no such technology, so when we saw the Blu TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system), we knew we had to snag it and try it out. The Blu TPMS relies on built-in Bluetooth sensors that replace the valve caps on each of your bike’s wheels. To monitor the pressure, just download the Blu TPMS app onto a smartphone. The app keeps track of the pressure of each tire and the temperature in real time. The sensors will send you push notifications when the pressure deviates from your pre-defined settings in the app. We have been running these for a few months and have found it a very handy system that works just as good as Blu said it would. The future is here, brothers and sisters. And it is making every ride a safe and good one. HB

ay back in the good ol’ days of the 1990s, when I was but a wee lad in my 30s, I was lucky enough to own a Fat Boy. It was, arguably, the most popular Harley of the entire decade, and the local dealerships had a hard time keeping them in stock. Times changed, the Dyna came into its own, and Softail fever went into a cooling phase. At least until Harley-Davidson merged the two designs into the new Softail design and put a Milwaukee-Eight into it. The Fat Boy model made the cut and has gotten

all the perks and benefits that come with the new motor and new suspension, albeit with the beefy design we all know and love, including the solid wheels. What you might not know is that the new Fat Boys have lost weight (29 pounds, to be exact) without sacrificing the muscular look. The lighter, stiffer frame carries some responsibility for that, as well as making it more fun to ride. Its 240 mm back tire and 160 mm rubber up front do their fair share of maintaining that meaty profile though. HB

WHAT DO YOU DO? I’m the social media coordinator at S&S Cycle. DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Motorcycles, tacos, and making things. That’s four words, but I never followed the rules well. WHEN DID YOU FIRST START RIDING? In 2013, although I rode on the back of my mom’s bike since I was a kid! WHAT DO YOU RIDE? A 2000 S&S-powered, chopped-up Sportster hardtail for the road and a ’94 Honda XR250L on the dirt.
WHY DO YOU RIDE? I ride because it allows me to shut off my brain for a while, enjoy the scenery, and go fast.
wanted to try for years and kept putting it off. Don’t let nerves or people telling you that you shouldn’t dictate whether you can or not.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST LIFE ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? That’s a tough one. I’d have to say building my bike—my first real build—over a winter inside my kitchen. I learned everything, from building an engine to how to weld, and even painted it myself. I’m pretty proud of that bike. I really enjoy being able to physically create something awesome.
WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU? Women who do things that they “shouldn’t,” like ride motorcycles. Marge Smith, from S&S; Gloria Struck, of the Motor Maids, who has been riding for 76 years; Jessi Combs, who welds and races the Baja 1000; and my mom, who always wanted a Harley so she got one and inspired me to ride.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST REGRET TO DATE? Not learning to ride earlier! I had

DIGGERISH NESS NOUVEAU DIGGER

lot of the time, what you create when you’re young has a habit of coming back full circle to check in on you when you’re older. In the case of Darth Vader’s betrayal of the Jedi, it came back to bite him in the ass. The story about the Ness clan and the digger chopper is a lot happier, however. According to legend, Arlen Ness brought the elements of the digger chopper style together after inspiration hit him at the drag races in the 1970s. Arlen was as deeply involved with the Frisco bikes as you can get, and there’s definitely a drag-racer look to your typical digger machine (long and low profile, mid- or rear-mount foot controls, extensive motor mods—you get the idea). Like their Frisco chopper cousins, diggers were narrow. That’s a key difference setting them apart from the wide tires you’d see on a drag racer.
“The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master.” —Darth Vader, Star Wars: A New Hope
By 1976, magazines such as Street Chopper had more and more fully realized digger bikes on their covers. Very long and low digger chops were svelte, with coffin or prism gas tanks teamed with girder front ends, wild paint, and, in many cases, lots of engraving on the cases and rocker covers. Combined with superchargers, turbo kits, racing carburetors, and motors foreign and domestic, these were the collective symptoms of digger fever. To get the long and low look for the diggers, they were usually built with low gooseneck frames and would have a big rake to the front fork. The frames also had chopped backbones so that they could be lengthened for the long look. Lastly, there’s that curious name: digger. Back then, the dragsters that inspired these bikes were also called diggers. Arlen Ness was so involved with the digger style that when Cory Ness started building his own iron in the early 1980s, his first Street Chopper cover bike, 1982’s “Turned Loose,” was a fully evolved digger chop. He’s built a lot of different stuff since then, obviously, and although diggers faded from popularity in the 1980s, they’ve been around here and there. ISSUE 1

THE ALL-NEW ARLEN NESS FORGED WHEEL LINE We designed and tooled up our own forgings. Added world class machining with world class chrome and anodized finishes. Developed a cartridge type hub design that makes our wheels more concentric than anything else in the v-twin aftermarket. While the rest of the industry mounts an outdated log style hub, we changed the rules by meticulously sculpting every detail of our cartridge hubs and our industry first hub covers to finish the design all the way to the bearing. Which brings us to now. It’s been 36 years since Cory made Turned Loose. He’s not only learned the custom-bike business front to back, up and down, but his son Zach has joined both Cory and Arlen in the family business. When Marcus Cox, a close personal friend to Zach and the Ness family, came to them for a bike, the decision came down to create a modern interpretation of the digger style the Ness family defined back in the day. Powered by a 124-inch S&S Evo V-twin, Marcus’ machine packs a ton of power like you’d expect in something rooted in dragbikes. Its profile is long and skinny, thanks to the tone set by the Ness rigid frame and its 3-1/2inch Ness wheels. Both of those elements capture the digger essence, but the other aspects of the bike are
28 / HOTBIKE.COM
a departure from the old style. Its curved gas tank is much closer to a pro street (the digger’s younger sibling), and those handlebars are wider than what you’d find on a 1970s digger chopper. You’re also not going to find a bunch of engraving and gold leaf on this version. Part of revisiting your past isn’t just to see where you’ve been but to see how it’s influenced who you are now. Mazz Custom Paint did a tremendous job with the paint and striping on this nouveau digger, bringing a different style to it in the process. In a way, all of these changes challenge the classic notions of the digger and redefine it with modern styling. This bike is as much a look forward as it is back, and the prognosis for the future looks pretty good. HB

M
y buddy Jerro bought himself a beat-up Harley-Davidson Panhead that ran okay but was poorly built. After a few weeks, I asked him if he would let me change it up. Believe it or not, after a few more weeks, he let me do it. And the best part is with this build I got to do what I wanted to make a classic-looking ’60s chopper. The parts for this build came mostly from friends and swap meets. The shotgun barrel shifter came from my good friend Turkey Stopnik and was the perfect addition to the bike. Although it was a lot of hard work at times, I really had a lot of fun doing it. I am very thankful that Mark Drews made the tank and fender look the way they do. My buddy Mark Choiniere, aka Paint by Chaka, did an amazing job with the paint and bodywork. I wanted a particular color I saw on an early Ford GT40 race car, and that’s kind of where I got the whole look of the bike from by the time I was finished. I really think the bike came out mimicking the looks of Ford’s ’60s Ferrari beater with the scoops Drews put on the tins and then with the color Chaka laid down. To tell you the truth, I wish this machine was my own, but I am very happy I got to do this for a good friend and that he is so happy with it. That’s what this bike-building s—t is all about, I guess. I didn’t really have a whole lot of space to work on this thing and really wasn’t sure how it would look when I got it out of the tiny room when it was done. We drank enough beers to bury the bike while I was working on it, so on the next bike I’m going to have to find a beer sponsor. Thank you to all my friends who were there for me and helped me out with this one. HB

BAGGED | 2016 ROAD GLIDE
O
bviously, this bagger isn’t built for the infamous singer Rick James, whose epic battles with Eddie Murphy’s brother Charlie were chronicled in the very awesome Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central. F Bomb Baggers made it for a totally different guy with the same name. This particular Rick James loved the shop’s dark, evil, murderous custom iron after ogling it on YouTube. “In the past couple of years, we have become well-known for murdering out baggers with our own little style— or what I have started to hashtag #blacktory—because we do so many black bikes,” F Bomb’s Tony Palermo tells us. Rick reached out and said he was in the market. The shop had a ’16 Road Glide that was already going under the knife. It was perfect timing. F—k yo’ couch. … F—k yo’ couch. … Road Glides are big and comfy, but stock furniture on two wheels wasn’t what Rick wanted. Instead, he said he was in love with the murder look that the
36 / HOTBIKE.COM
shop brought to the baggers and that they stood out from the other bikes that he had seen. “So we went ahead with the build and got started by raking the frame with a Misfit 30-inch neck and American Suspension Trees,” Tony says. He ordered a Top Shop ass end, sides, and stretched tank; RWD fender; BMF chin spoiler; and Dirty Bird headlight bezel and windshield as the foundation for what the bike would look like when it was done. Now, Darkness, the tables have turned. Big-wheel baggers are as polarizing as it gets in the custom-scoot world. There’s very little middle ground when it comes to how people see the things. If you can get a positive response out of your haters, however, you’ve turned out something good. Tony says, “I always try to keep our builds clean and classy. We get enough s—t as it is in this crowd of big-wheel haters, so if I can get a thumbs-up from one of the haters then I know I’m doing my job.” That’s exactly how some of said
haters have responded to this machine. Finishing can make or break a completed motorcycle, and in this case, Fast Eddy’s laid down a Vivid Gloss black throughout the whole body while also taking the beautification up a notch by molding the Dirty Bird headlight bezel to the outer fairing. Matched with DD’s turn signals and a tinted headlight by Five Star, the details just added to the murdered look of the bagger. “John at Dirty Bird basically won me over on doing a Road Glide because until that lowlife windshield and bezel came out, Road Glide fairings just looked like giant bird heads to me,” Tony says. “With those two pieces and the special in-house fairing bracket we designed, we got the bike to get a factory-tucked look that flows like the factory fairing. There’ll be no fairings that stick up 5-plus inches or higher on my Road Glides.” Beyond that, murdering out a motorcycle means black everything. Every part that was chrome was then sent out to Bret at Advanced Powdercoating

and gloss-blacked out. The special mix he came up with blows away any other powdercoater Tony has ever used, and he says the durability is 10 times better than the previous shop with which he dealt. What did the air suspension say to the bagger? Slam! When customizing the chassis and suspension, Tony went with a Dirty Air El Grande setup and MRI centerstand because, “If she ain’t slammed, it just don’t look right.” F Bomb Baggers needed custom wheels to finish out the roller, and when it came to picking the wheel, Tony knew
SMT was the way he wanted to roll. SMT’s Big Fatty rim was the one that would give Rick James’ Road Glide that spoke look he wanted. That, paired up with SMT’s 18-inch dual-caliper setup, made sure the bike would stop on a dime too. Horsepower is a powerful drug. Last but not least, Rick wanted to feed his horsepower fix. When Rick saw the Trask Turbos on all of F Bomb Baggers’ other bikes, he had to have one on his too. Tony hit up Trask Performance and ordered up one of their kits, which nearly doubled the factory horsepower on this V-twin. HB

t’s a crying shame when a motorcycle doesn’t get ridden all the time. Why else would you have one? They look good sitting parked, but they look even better out in the wind being ridden by someone who loves and appreciates the joys of riding a good bike. Mike Harden at HardCo
feels the same way, and that just might be his mantra for the whole custom bike experience: “We build them, we show them, we ride them, we break them, then we rebuild them better.” A guy like that rides his metal hard and isn’t big into trailer queening it. “I have always wanted to build a single ISSUE 1

ICONIC | 1949 FLATHEAD drop tube frame 45-cubic-inch Flathead,” Harden says. “Five years ago, we did. Oklahoma City has a lot of talented chopper guys. With their help, we built a modern twist on a legendary chopper.” Some think the 45 side valve an underpowered motor. In the hands of a good mechanic and with the right transmission and gears, it will run with V-twins like the Shovelhead. This motor was originally built up by Manny in OKC, who did right by Harden. The Oklahoma roads were less kind. Thanks to those streets, the frame broke after approximately 15,000 miles. Luckily, Paughco warrantied the frame; Hardco set out to rebuild it better after that. “It may have been easier to weld up the frame, but I ride hard, so we started over,” Harden says. Harden and Mike Antinoro tore the bike down, then welded all the tabs and mounts to it. The Acme Choppers narrow wishbone springer got fitted with 6-inch risers from Lowbrow Customs and stainless bars from Acme. After that, they fabricated a new set of fishtail pipes and it was on to cleanup and bodywork. Harden molded and painted the frame. Meanwhile, he sent the fender and tank to Mik’s Pinstriping & Custom Paint in Oklahoma City, which laid down a beautiful ’70s paint job and striped the frame to help with Harden’s imperfections.

“THE HARDCO 45 FLATTY HAS BECOME A FIXTURE IN THE TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA CHOPPER SCENES.”
Ashley at Distinct Customs in OKC continued the killer design work with a floral Western pattern on the seat. He also engraved brass inserts and tooled leather surrounds for the running boards. Once all of that handcrafted handiwork was done, the two Mikes set about reassembling the bike. Since then, the HardCo 45 Flatty has become a fixture in the Texas and Oklahoma chopper scenes. Harden says he’s already attended and rode in to a lot of events this year, coast to coast. Why are we not surprised? HB

What motivates any of us to do anything? After spending most of my adult life trying to find this answer, my best guess would be that what motivates us to wake up in the morning and why we live and breathe is love—love for our family, love for our friends, and love for these two-wheeled gas-drinking and fire-breathing objects we call custom motorcycles.

It’s that feeling you get in your heart when you know a connection is made that makes life a worthwhile toil. It is an addiction. A labor of love. Take, for instance, this bike you see before you. This handmade frame and springer fork wrapped around a 1996 Harley-Davidson Sportster motor was made by Led Sled Customs owner Pat Patterson for his wife, Jen. I have known the Patterson family for years, and recognize the love they have for each other and for any and all things motorcycle. This bare-metal machine is not just another bike rolling out of Led Sled Customs in Dayton, Ohio. It is a testament to what can be done when two people love and trust each other enough to quit their day jobs to put long hours in doing something they both truly adore.

“WITHOUT PAT AND JEN’S YINAND-YANG RELATIONSHIP, LED SLED WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST ANOTHER SHOP CLOSING ITS DOORS A DECADE AGO.”
Jen is the backbone of Led Sled, and Pat is the hype man and lead fabricator. Without Pat and Jen’s yin-and-yang relationship, Led Sled would have been just another shop closing its doors a decade ago. But instead, Led Sled has been banging out some of the most inventively styled bikes and parts one could ever imagine. We all know that personal and professional relationships are both hard to balance, but can you imagine compounding both of those factors by combining both of them and working with a loved one in close confinement? Somehow, Jen and Pat have made it work and have been successful both with business and family life. And let’s not forget about the love part of it. HB

Meant to disrupt the norm, this radical design can be converted to work with any type of bike. We started with a half helmet and added an integrated drop-down sun visor for protection from sunlight. A rear comfort sleeve allows you to convert the helmet to a ¾ open-face and then attach the included front mask and you’ve got one, aggressive “bad ass” looking helmet.

SPEED FX TWIN CAM MOTOR, MEET FXR FRAME WORDS: NYC DANNY D PHOTOS: RYAN HANDT
A
lot of paint jobs have been getting out of hand over the past few years. They look like carnival wagons and ’70s drum sets with a bowl of linguine thrown on ’em. Not mine. I’ve owned this bike for close to 20 years now. It ran the 80-inch motor for the first year I owned it, and then I ran a 96-inch S&S Evo mill in it for a while. Over the years, I had a lot of fun breaking everything behind the motor on my bike: two transmissions, three belts, two rear wheels, an inner primary, a torque arm, four rear axles, a swingarm, axle adjusters, and one transmission case. I lost count of the motor mounts I wasted riding the piss out of this thing. After about 15 years of this abuse (it was ridden like a stolen dirt bike), the motor was getting tired. Every seal was leaking. I took the bike off the road. I figured I was going to go over it. It was going to go down to the bare frame and come back from there.
Big-inch Evos and FXRs have a lot of problems. Evo FXR drivelines have a lot of weak links in them. They were great for 35 hp Shovels in 1982 when they came into production, but when you’re making more than 100 ponies, the motor doesn’t want to stay attached to anything. I figured a Twin Cam swap would take care of most of those weak links in the driveline. Once I knew where I was going with this bike, next up was a front motor mount. The front stock one is another weak link. We took a Big Bear Performance front motor mount and added an additional mounting point to it. Next came the swingarm. I had two other aluminum swingarms I was going with until I saw the piece from Mad Jap Performance. It has the best craftsmanship I’ve seen: five-axis CNC machining, solid billet, precision fitment—every aspect of it was perfect for me.

I called Öhlins to hold up that swingarm with a set of Blackline piggybacks. Since I was on the phone with them, I ordered up a set of their 43 mm fully adjustable fork assemblies too. Beyond that, the crew at SLNYC made the custom fender bracket/fork brace/brake line router. Topping off the front end is a set of ProTaper bars held down by Hard Case Performance risers. When it came time to dial in that Twin Cam driveline for my bike, I called Ramjet Racing in Arizona, and what we came up with was a 124-inch Twin Cam in S&S cases. Ramjet filled them up with a crank from Darkhorse Crankworks, Carrillo rods, Woods cams, and capped them with a Dave Mackie top

end. That’s all I’m telling you about the motor though. For the styling, I stayed away from the current trends and went back to the classic FXR look. I kept the headlight eyebrow and old taillight and went with Arlen Ness struts from the 1990s with a lower bar/riser setup. I also wanted to keep the paint away from trends, so I called my homie Nick at Trigger Twist to handle that task. We went with a simple Jaguar British Racing Green, and black two-tone with gray stripe and FXDX Harley-Davidson logo on the tank. The Earnhardt-style 718s on the side covers rep my hometown of Queens, New York, just like the set on my 2014 Dyna. The frame was brought down to bare
metal and had a few modifications done. The kickstand cross-member was removed and substituted with a new one to clear the oil pan. A weld-on Eastern Fabrications kickstand was modified and tacked into place. The front motor mount was cut out and replaced with a tubular replacement brace. The regulator has been relocated to the wishbone. The oil tank opening under the seat was closed off, and a custom battery hold-down and a few other mods were done before shipping the frame and a bunch of other components to Arcane Powdercoating in Brooklyn, New York. These guys did great work in a quick turnaround; they knew the FXR show in Sturgis was coming quickly and this bike was debuting out there. HB

his is a really special bike build to us for several reasons. The project was supposed to have been put together several years ago when my wife and I purchased the heart of this beautiful machine in the form of a nonrunning 1962 HarleyDavidson Panhead. The night we bought this engine turned out to be a night we wish never happened. My mother-in-law, Kim Hall, came over to see the engine we had been raving about scoring. Kim passed away tragically from a heart aneurysm just minutes after leaving our house. Yes, we have all heard many married men rant on and on about their motherin-law, but this was not the case with me. My beautiful and loving mother-in-law was the most amazing woman you would ever meet. She loved spoiling us and
wanted only to see us happy, regardless of the situation. Because of this, I decided that building this bike would be put on the back burner until the time was right. Fast-forward about three years. I received a phone call from the man himself, Michael Lichter. Michael called and offered me the challenging opportunity of building a bike in less than four months. The bike was to be displayed at the world-famous Motorcycles as Art exhibit at the Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I knew of the event and also knew that the bike was on display for more than two weeks under some bright, unforgiving lights for all the world to see. And it was going to be shown alongside some of the world’s top young builders. Talk about pressure.

“THE BIKE WAS ON DISPLAY FOR MORE THAN TWO WEEKS UNDER SOME BRIGHT, UNFORGIVING LIGHTS FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE. AND IT WAS GOING TO BE SHOWN ALONGSIDE SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP YOUNG BUILDERS. TALK ABOUT PRESSURE.”
But doing this show opened up the opportunity to meet some of the greatest OGs of the industry who paved the way for us current builders—guys such as Willie G. Davidson, Sugar Bear, Dave Perewitz, Paul Yaffe, Bobby Seeger Jr., and Arlen and Cory Ness, who stopped by to see the bike at the show and say good words about it. Due to the situation with my mother-in-law’s passing, the time frame of the bike build, and the design of the bike, this was by far the most important and most challenging build of my career. And to do it with little to no sleep, I must have had an angel looking down on me. HB

THE

he Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, isn’t the typical mountain biker’s road-trip destination. My love for two wheels, however, goes beyond the dirt, and I enjoy roaming the country on my Harley as much as I love catching air on my mountain bike. After years of having to choose between a truck with my mountain bike in the back or heading out on my motorcycle, just staring at the mountains around me, wishing I had my mountain bike, it was time to think outside the box. After my longtime employer surprised me with a going-out-of-business phone call, I found myself at a crossroads. I’d always wanted to ride to Sturgis but was typically committed to being in Whistler, British Columbia, for Crankworx, the Mardi Gras meets Super Bowl of mountain-bike events. When I looked at the calendar and saw Sturgis took place a week before Crankworx, the wheels began to turn. Could I get a group together and ride to the two biggest twowheeled events in North America? Hell yeah, I could! And so I did. I searched eBay and bought a Harley quick-disconnect base plate for a TourPak to use as the base for the rack. From there, some square stock was erected with a roof-rack bicycle fork-mount attachment system. A friend put some tubing in a bender and welded a piece of angle iron to it to complete the motorcycle’s bicycle rack. After a successful shakedown, the bicycle rack was off to the powdercoater. In the months leading up to the trip, group texts and s—t-talking passed time as we speculated on weather and who would wimp out. Nic, who earned the nickname “U-turn” thanks to his inability to properly secure his load, had some work conflicts, so our departure was delayed to Tuesday evening. It was a few days after the Sturgis kickoff party, but we figured that would be plenty of time to make the roughly 1,300-mile ride to Sturgis from Bend, Oregon. You might have guessed by now that our trip wasn’t full of flashing women and easy miles. In fact, we only made it about five hours before our first derailment. In keeping with the theme of our trip, however, a missed turn outside the

town of Burns, Oregon, put us in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a fullmoon night. We happened to be near the Crystal Crane Hot Springs, which made our detour completely worth it. We woke up on the shore of a great hot spring, packed our stuff, and hit the road east. After a small-town cafe and hundreds of straight, boring miles, we found ourselves blazing through Boise, Idaho, with temperatures almost matching our triple-digit speeds. We’d had enough of the soulless slab and hopped off the highway in hopes of making it to Jackson, Wyoming. Shortly after leaving the highway, we snaked up the winding road toward Craters of the Moon National Monument. Our scenic ride was interrupted when U-turn unexpectedly stopped in front of us to tell us he might not have enough fuel to make it. Once the smoke cleared and our hands stopped shaking, we pressed on, rather than backtrack 10 miles to the last station we passed. About an hour later, U-turn was empty and coasted to the side of the road. Sammy and I saw the town in the distance, and after waving at U-turn, we continued to cold drinks and Hostess treats. Don’t judge us yet! We all had fuel bottles on our bikes. We expected U-turn to arrive as we were downing a tasty beverage. Instead, we saw him coasting up, skateboarding into the station. “My fuel bottle was empty!” he yelled out. After filling up and cooling off, we continued. We made a stop in Arco, Idaho, the first town powered by atomic energy, and had an atomic burger before venturing into the desolate plains of eastern Idaho. Jackson was not happening for us this night. We found a place to set up camp and pressed on early the next morning. At breakfast that morning, we took inventory of the unimpressive number of miles covered and agreed to make a quick stop in Jackson. As it goes so often on the road, we didn’t follow through with that plan either. Just as the road wound around the summit and presented us with a view of Jackson Hole, a group of 10 mountain bikers, fully geared up, raised their fists in the air and dropped into what looked like the trail of a lifetime. Not wanting to regret passing this up, we pulled over and swapped bikes.

It was a welcome break from the highway, but our “short” exploratory mountainbike ride turned into a six-hour suffer fest. Without water or snacks, we were ill prepared for the massive descent and subsequent climb back up. But—hot damn—was that downhill trail worth it! We cussed, cried, and dug ourselves back to the Harleys and mustered up enough energy to load up and ride into Jackson for the best burrito of our trip. Tired and without another nearby town, we found a friendly local who also rode mountain bikes, and he let us crash at his pad.
62 / HOTBIKE.COM
Early the next morning, we made our way through Grand Teton. We got to bask in the mountains’ beauty a bit longer than anticipated when the first of U-turn’s cargo dumps occurred about 10 miles into our ride. After a while, Sammy’s taillight rattled loose. At least it happened near a scenic viewpoint. Back on the road, we climbed out of the valley and descended into Dubois, Wyoming, home of the world’s largest “jackalope.” We sped away from Dubois and made it a full tank without having to turn around! Feeling proud, U-turn was
about to hop back on his bike before noticing threads sticking out of his bald rear tire. Thermopolis, not exactly a booming metropolis, had but a single motorcycle shop, and inside was a kooky mechanic with a tire. It just so happened to fit. Sadly, he reinstalled the wheel incorrectly and shoved the rotor between the piston and back of the brake pad and bolted up the saddlebags without us noticing. Excited with our luck, we peeled out, trying to make up time in hopes of reaching Sturgis for some Friday-night festivities.
After upsetting some motorists and dragging some floorboards through some of the prettiest country we’ve ever seen, we arrived in Buffalo, Wyoming. U-turn nearly missed the station as he yelled, “I’ve got no brakes!” We peeked under to see a chewed-up rotor as the heat blasted our faces. We pulled the saddlebag off,
64 / HOTBIKE.COM
removed some brackets, and pulled the brake pads out, and U-turn was back on the road sans a rear brake. The rain was starting to fall and the sun was setting. We only had a couple hundred miles to go. I said to myself that we were making it to Sturgis tonight! So off we went, trying to stay ahead of the rain.
Soon, the light show in the sky was replaced with the neon lights of Sturgis. We made our way through town before finding a spot to park on the main drag. We had two days to recharge, explore, and get to Whistler. But we couldn’t wait to get back on— and off—the road. HB

erched on an unassuming swath of Alabama countryside about 15 miles outside Birmingham, the Barber Motorsports Complex is a thing of beauty. The 228,000-squarefoot museum, built in 1995, now holds the largest collection of motorcycles in the world. At any given time, more than 600 machines are on display, which accounts for less than half of the total number in its collection, 99 percent of which are runners. In 2003, the 830-acre Barber Motorsports Park constructed a 16-turn, 2.38-mile racetrack that hosts everything from superbikes to IndyCars. This year was the 13th annual Barber Vintage Festival, running from October 6–8, packing in tens of thousands of vintage motorcycle lovers, riders, and racers from all over the world.
68 // HOTBIKE.COM HOTBIKE.COM
The combination of the attendees and the museum means the park is full of rare and valuable machines being traded, raced, or displayed. It’s not going too far to call it a vintage-motorcycle mecca. And more is added to the festival annually—this year there was a wall of death (and globe of death), circus sideshows, demo rides, freestyle and stunt shows, seminars, vendors, and a 5-acre swap meet. There are also three days of roadracing, vintage sidecars, and motocross. The sights and sounds are epic. From sunup until sundown for 72 hours, we were amazed by the amount of unusual and uncommon two-wheeled machines we witnessed both on the track and in the museum. There will be hundreds of bikes you recognize and even more that you don’t, and everyone in attendance is there for the same love of two-wheel life. We highly suggest to anyone who loves motorcycles to make a pilgrimage to the Barber Vintage Festival. You won’t be sorry you did. PRECISION WELDING 101 THE BASICS
F
or as long as I can remember, I’ve been building exhausts for just about any vehicle I could get my hands on. I have always felt that there are few things in life more satisfying than hearing a motor roar to life through an exhaust system that you’ve spent countless hours planning and building. And that is why I do it! In this article, I will break down techniques and skills that will hopefully make your next fabrication project a little more refined when you press down that pedal and put your torch to metal. For those of you who are beginners, we are going to start from the ground floor of precision TIG work. We’ll be looking at machine setup, torch options, and gas flow. The machine basics are some of the most important and often overlooked keys to laying some high-quality work. You don’t need a super-expensive rig or the latest and greatest accessories to do high-quality work. Just knowing the fundamentals will help up your welding game. Start at the arc! A consistent, predictable, wellfocused arc is a game changer. There are a slew of modern tungsten electrodes available in today’s market. One of the biggest favors you can do yourself to improve the quality of your welding is try a “hybrid” electrode. They work well for a variety of materials, sharpen nicely, last a long time, and aren’t radioactive so you won’t glow in the dark.

The modern No. 12 cup puts out a tremendous amount of coverage while not using that much more gas, so it is my go-to on most stainless work. The massive high-coverage cups are best reserved for titanium and other special applications because they use a large amount of gas but can shield just about anything.

Now that you know what tungsten to grab from your local welding store, what do you do with it? Sharpen it to a point! The arc leaving your electrode will resemble whatever shape you sharpen your electrode into. So sharpen it to a point! You’ll get well-focused, reliable arcs. Around a 25- to 40-degree taper on your tungsten is suggested. Remember, when sharpening your tungsten, grind it the same direction that current will travel out of the electrode. This will make that arc even more predictable. Read on, my friends, and I hope these words and photos will aid you in being the welder you always wanted to be! HB

ROLLIN’ CHROME SPORT CHROME REINFORCER WHEEL INSTALL
O
ur pals at Sport Chrome have been our go-to for all things plating for quite some time. We have taken mountains of parts there for chrome, and not once have we been dissatisfied with their quality or service. Then one day we received a call from John Reed, the main man at Sport Chrome, and he told us they are now the U.S. distributor for the Reinforcer wheel in black, black/ machined, and chrome finishes. If you don’t know what the Reinforcer wheel is all about, it is a 21-inch wheel that is very similar to H-D’s Enforcer wheel that comes on many of the MoCo’s baggers. With the Reinforcer, only the front wheel has to be upgraded for a custom “big-wheel bagger” look. Once they were in stock, we grabbed a chrome Reinforcer and a newly chromed rear H-D Enforcer, which can be purchased outright or as an exchange-item wheel from Sport Chrome. We then took the pair to our pals at Wheel Works to install them. Here’s how it all went down. As you can see, the chromed rear H-D Enforcer sure looks a lot like the new 21-inch Reinforcer. Sport Chrome and Ride Nice have all the parts you need to keep the chrome theme going. Mat from Wheel Works carefully installs the new tires on the rear Enforcer, as not to scratch the newly plated wheel. He then installs the new chrome Ride Nice brake rotor using the all-chrome hardware. Sport Chrome also

manufactures chrome cush-drive hubs that match the wheel perfectly. All wheels must be properly mounted and balanced for safety’s sake. Up front, the new Dunlop American Elite tire goes onto the 21-inch Reinforcer wheel. A pair of chrome Ride Nice rotors were then bolted on and torqued to factory specs. The new Reinforcer was also properly balanced so no wobbling would happen. The front wheel was then installed and checked for proper fender clearance using a Ride Nice fender spacer kit. The rear chromed H-D wheel was also installed and properly aligned and adjusted. And there you have it: the upgraded, chrome-plated Enforcer and Reinforcer/Enforcer wheel combination from Sport Chrome. HB

BABY GOT BACKREST

s luxurious as Touring models like our 2017 Road Glide can be, P&A catalogs make sure there’s more. Removing the bags and spinning these docking spools into place meant we could install this detachable sissy bar. A couple of things to keep in mind: Dabbing on a little red Loctite before you snug the bolts down is a good idea, and before it sets, make sure the notches in the spools are oriented horizontally. Once the mounting hardware is in place, the bar will slide in behind the shock and then rotate down with a click, much like closing the trunk of a car. HB

TWIST AND GO THE REKLUSE AUTO CLUTCH
SOURCE: REKLUSE rekluse.com
W
hat if we told you that auto clutches are the hot new thing for Harleys? Well, we have been playing with them for years and absolutely dig them. Many designs in the past have had as many parts as a Swiss watch and weren’t nearly as dependable as we would have liked. That was until the Idaho-based company known as Rekluse hit the HarleyDavidson scene with the EXP 3.0 clutch. Using centrifugal force, the $799 U.S.-made Rekluse EXP 3.0 auto clutch allows a rider to start and stop without ever pulling in the clutch lever. The system uses a centrifugally driven proprietary technology, which prevents the engine from stalling when stopped. Yes, y’all, you don’t have to hold or feather the clutch in at red lights or in heavy traffic anymore. You can just take off and stop in gear without using the clutch lever.
80 | HOTBIKE.COM
“YES, Y’ALL, YOU DON’T HAVE TO HOLD OR FEATHER THE CLUTCH IN AT RED LIGHTS OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ANYMORE. YOU CAN JUST TAKE OFF AND STOP IN GEAR WITHOUT USING THE CLUTCH LEVER.”
We installed one in a bagger, as well as a Dyna, and have loved using the EXP clutch on the SoCal freeways and at bike-weektype events where the stop-and-go traffic is overly prevalent. To make it clear, the Rekluse EXP clutch is not an “auto clutch” like those of a car or moped where you just gas and go. The transmission still has to be shifted between gears with your hand and foot. And once the kit is installed, you can still ride the bike as normal, using the clutch to engage all the bike’s gears as before. If you would ever want to. The install is just as quick as changing out a clutch pack, and there is no modification to the stock components. Performance-wise, the TorqDrive clutch pack delivers higher torque capacity and faster power transfer over the stock setup, making clutchless power launches from a standstill really fun! HB

FIRST MFG CO. HUTCH GLOVE
This men’s glove features handsome two-tone leather and denim construction throughout, and a nice, simple and effective palm pattern. When I first strapped on the Hutch gloves, I liked the fact that they had a proper-fitting rubber knuckle inlay and a nice-size Velcro-actuated wrist cuff. The gloves fit well after the initial ride, and after only a day or so it felt as if I’d had these gloves for years. I also enjoyed the handiness of the touch tech fingers when working my phone. The fingers were a tiny bit long for me, but I usually find this to be an issue with my apelike palms and stubby fingers, so normal humans shouldn’t have any of the same issues. ROLAND SANDS DESIGN LAUNCH GLOVE
The Launch may look like work gloves made out of vintage selvage-style denim, but they are made from so much more. Dyneema fibers are woven into the denim, making it a ton more resistant to road rash than standard jean material. After riding with these for a few hundred miles, I found the doublelayer cowhide palm and the hand-togrip connection to be very comfy. And, as with any glove worth its technical salt, the Launch has cell touch layers in both the index finger and thumb tips for smartphone use. I felt the large-size glove fit more like an XL, so make sure you try before you buy. PRICE: $85 ROLANDSANDS.COM

TIME TO STEP UP?
I
t’s a question that’s only come up a handful of times in the 100-plusyear history of Harley-Davidson. Every time The Motor Company has debuted a fresh engine design, riders want to know if it’s time to move up to that new model. Was the Knuckle that much better than a Flattie? How about the Evo and Shovelhead? And now it’s the Milwaukee-Eight pushing the Twin Cam aside. Is this new multivalver all it’s cracked up to be? “Over the past year we’ve been asked that a lot,” Jamie Hanson, of SPP, says. Today’s riders are asking Jamie and the crew at SPP what they think of this engine and, just as important, about its possibilities. What’s available performance-wise, and what can they expect? Now, some of those questioners are guys with bikes long overdue for retirement, Harleys ready for a rest. A new bike is in their future no matter what. “But plenty of others are coming up on strong-running, tricked-out Twin Cams,” Jamie says, late models set up with big-bore kits, cams, pipes, the works. For them, jumping to an M-8 can be a little more complicated. What’s that engine got to offer that they don’t already have? “Actually, quite a bit,” Jamie says. “But remember, it means starting all over again. Everything they’ve bought and added to their bike is going to have to be done again. But the end result can be pretty amazing.” Now, it must be said that anyone used to twisting the throttle and having something important happen might be a little let down with a showroomstock 107-inch M-8. It’s got torque, no question about that. In stock form there’s generally 90-plus pound-feet on tap. Horsepower, however, hovers in the mid70s. “Hardly what you’d expect from that displacement,” Jamie says. But the good news is that without too much effort or expense, that can change fast. With past as prologue, it hasn’t taken the aftermarket long to step up with what it takes to make a Harley engine stronger,
90 / HOTBIKE.COM
“AND A FIRST STEP IS TO GO THROUGH THAT LIST AND PICK OUT A NEW FREE-FLOWING AIR-FILTER ASSEMBLY, A GOOD SET OF PIPES, AND A NEW CAM. THE USUAL STAGE 1 TUNE.” and the list of companies already offering Milwaukee-Eight upgrades is a regular who’s who of all the usual suspects. S&S is in the game, T-Man’s here, Zipper’s is a player, and so is Bassani, Rush, MagnaFlow, RC Components, Ness, Feuling—the list goes on. “And a first step,” Jamie says, “is to go through that list and pick out a new free-flowing air-filter assembly, a good set of pipes, and a new cam. The usual Stage 1 tune.” Applied to a Milwaukee-Eight, the change in performance will be immediate and pretty dramatic. The new Harley-Davidson engine, it seems, is proving to be exceptionally receptive to performance adds. That simple air-filter/ exhaust/cam swap has routinely put the torque for the 107-inch version at well over 100 pound-feet on the SPP dyno while boosting horsepower by 20 or more ponies. At a minimum. “We’ve done a number of MilwaukeeEights with this setup,” Jamie says. “They’ve all been eye-poppers.” The picture gets even rosier when it’s the CVO 114-inch version of the Milwaukee-Eight. In stock form with nothing more than a new set of pipes (the OE has a free-flowing air filter here) these engines regularly pull 85 hp, pegging torque at 117 pound-feet or better. Slip in a new cam, maybe a .475-lift version, reset the computer map accordingly, and
SPP’s seen just shy of 110 hp and 123 pound-feet of torque. “It’s right in the neighborhood of what Harley’s claiming for the Screamin’ Eagle Stage III kit,” Jamie points out. And that package includes special heads and high-compression pistons. And this is all just the beginning. More upgrades for the Milwaukee-Eight are being announced on an almost weekly basis. New cams, pipes, and filters are all available now, and Feuling even has full cam chest/oil pump kits. But heads, pistons, and even big-bore kits are all in the works, and reliable sources are talking about a 138-inch bolt-on setup due for release. “And the potential for all this is nothing short of amazing,” Jamie says. “An easy, everyday usable 150-plushorsepower shouldn’t be out of the question.” And that, exactly, is what riders want to hear. Just like the Knuckle replaced the Flathead and the Evo moved ahead of the Shovel, the Milwaukee-Eight is poised to make its own big news. Talk to the guys at Speed’s Performance Plus. They’ve already seen it. HB SOURCE: SPEED’S PERFORMANCE PLUS speedsperformanceplus.com 605-695-1401 — Minnesota 605-695-2272 — South Dakota

SHIGE SUGANUMA THE MAN BEHIND THE MOONEYES
W
hat started as a small side business in Yokohama, Japan, in 1983 sure has come a long way. Shige Suganuma was working for Disney in Japan at the time. After meeting and befriending Dean Moon of Moon Speed Equipment in Santa Fe Springs, California, Shige began to ponder the reality of opening his own customizing and speed shop in Yokohama. And so he did—first with a small location jammed to the rafters with parts just off the shores of Yokohama Bay. Then, after a few years, Shige moved his labor of love to a larger location in the Honmoku neighborhood of Yokohama. The building known as Mooneyes Japan HQ Area-1 is complete with a garage and cafe. This location is and always has been one of the mainstays of the Japanese custom car and motorcycle scene for the past 22 years. Every day
92 / HOTBIKE.COM
and night you can find visitors from Asia, America, and Europe all converging on the location like moths to a flame. There are also other Mooneyes locations popping up all over the globe. That’s what we call taking it to the people! Over on this side of the Pacific Ocean, Moon Speed Equipment stalled after Dean died in 1987, then halted altogether after Dean’s wife died. In the early 1990s, Shige purchased and relaunched the company as Mooneyes USA. Shige virtually saved the Moon brand from an early grave and then made it more successful than it ever was. Shige is also responsible for creating the Mooneyes Hot Rod and Custom show (HCS) in Yokohama, which is widely regarded as being one of the best motorcycle shows on the planet. The Mooneyes HCS is now in its 26th year of production. It’s a one-day show that sees more than 15,000 car and bike nuts
through its gates in the eight hours the show is open. Mooneyes USA also has a very legendary Christmas party in Southern California that outgrew every event site it had ever been hosted at until it found a welcome home at the Irwindale Speedway a few years back. When you first meet Shige, his unassuming, calm demeanor is what shines through. But as the conversation lengthens and the stories unfold, you are enamored with the man he is and see the fire that resides inside of him. Only after knowing what Shige has done (in a pretty much behind-thescenes manner) a person can’t help but respect the foresight and accomplishments he has made so far in his career. Shige Suganuma is a one-of-a-kind human being, and the custom-vehicle world is very grateful to have him as one of ours. HB

CYCLE WAREHOUSE IN BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA
J
ust outside of Pittsburgh, on 200 Main St. in a sleepy steel town known as Butler, lies the holy grail of Harley parts. Known to locals as Cycle Warehouse, this five-story 85,000-square-foot piece of real estate is home to hundreds of bikes of all ages and tens of thousands of new, used, obsolete, and hard-to-find parts from just about every year and model Harley-Davidson made. There is even a complete floor of treasured new-old stock parts and accessories, which is locked up tighter than Fort Knox. We spent close to four hours there while we were graciously given a guided tour, and it wasn’t uncommon to see a prewar Knucklehead engine sitting beside a never-installed XR-750 motor or a wall full of FXRP fairings and bags stacked ceiling high. But don’t think making the pilgrimage to Cycle Warehouse is the only way to get some of the good stuff. The store post parts online daily to its eBay account; website, cyclewarehouseonline .com; and Instagram @cyclewarehouse. You can also pick up the phone and dial 724-282-7278 for any and all of your obsolete or hard-to-find Harley parts. But we really suggest making the trip and seeing with your own two eyes the amazing amount of exceptional bikes and parts all housed under one roof in a single location. It’s a bucket-list affair, indeed. HB
