Welcome to the 8th issue – this time around we’ve focussed on city hotels, which we feel are somewhat overlooked. Our cover story explores the subject in some detail, and we also present two well-established hotels, Hotel Jen and The Somerset in our Spotlights. This time, for Conversation, we interviewed Maldives Inflight Catering Private Limited’s Steve Ng. Steve is also group general manager for Hulhule Island Hotel (HIH) and Madifushi, a property under development. We talk about his vision for the HIH, his thoughts on mass tourism and what Warm Regards expectations he has for HIH once the airport project is complete. Steve Ng This time for Conversation, we sit down with Steve Ng, the group general manager of Hulhule’ Island Hotel. He also heads Maldives Inflight Catering Pvt Ltd and Madifushi, the new resort that is being developed in Meemu atoll.
Malaysia-born Steve Ng has over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, having worked for some of the top hospitality brands across the globe, such as Malaysia’s Berjaya Corporation Berhad and the InterContinental Group. He has also managed hotels in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Seychelles, to name a few. Since he took up the reins at Hulhule’ Island Hotel in September last year, the hotel has gone through major transformations. And there’s more planned for the future. We had a chat with him to talk about emerging trends in the industry, his plans for the hotel, and his thoughts on how Maldives can stay ahead of the competition.
Hotel Insider: Can you walk us through some major changes that the hotel has gone through since its opening? Steve Ng: Occupancy remains consistent. Of course, as our main clientele are airline crew and business travellers, while we see some fluctuation over the year, the occupancy rates remains pretty constant even during low season. Hotel Insider: Can you tell us some things that affect occupancy? Like external events, such as natural disasters and political unrest. Do they have an impact? Steve Ng: Natural disasters such as tsunamis definitely have an impact, but only
for a short while. Just like when I was working in Thailand when the tsunamis hit, I think that the impact is comparatively smaller here. Similar to political instability, I feel that it does not affect occupancy that much. When I was in Cha Am when Thaksin was overthrown, and while they closed down the airport for one month, it only took them nine months to resume business. Of course, airlines would try to make changes in such times of political instability, just like airlines who tried changed their routes to transit in Maldives instead of Sri Lanka when the bombings happened in Sri Lanka recently. However, not many airlines finally made the switch because there are a lot of expenses involved. I think that as long as the tourism ministry continues to promote Maldives and keeps on assuring people that it is safe to visit, it will be okay. Hotel Insider: Being the only city hotel in the greater Male’ area that serves alcohol, do you feel that you have an advantage over the others? Steve Ng: Honestly, that is the common perception, but I do not think that this has resulted in any major impact to us in terms of hotel occupancy. With safari boats just five to ten minutes away, or nearby resorts offering free flow of drinks for a small charge, people who really want to drink will go to these options instead. I think that there are advantages to come to HIH instead, but for our regular guests, it’s more for the social setting instead of just for the alcohol.

Hotel Insider: With the development of the Hulhumale’ second phase, more city hotels will crop up in the greater Male’ area. Are you concerned that this will affect your business? Steve Ng: With the development of the airport and Hulhumale’s second phase, we expect many changes. However, we are not in direct competition because the guesthouses are vastly different from our hotel. They offer a different experience, and they also target a different market segment at a lower price point, which is different from ours. We should be cognizant that with such rapid expansion, there is the possibility of starting a price war between hotels and guesthouses. This is similar to what happened in Thailand many years go, resulting in five-star hotels dropping to four-stars, four-stars to threestars and so on, due to the price competition. It is crucial that we (and the ministry) understand that we need to be clear on the kind of market that we need, and that we cannot satisfy everyone. Hotel Insider: With the ongoing expansion of the airport, there will be a significant increase in tourist arrivals. How many guests will you be able to accommodate in the future? And what changes will we see then? Steve Ng: We understand that the government has predicted that with the ongoing expansion, the number of arrivals will increase to 14 million. Thus, we are also expanding our market segments, and we are also looking at attracting MICE clients. With the upcoming 12,000 square feet ballroom that we are building, we will have the capacity to accommodate 500-800 guests at a single event, which is a market segment that no other resort is able to serve at this point. At present, we have 136 rooms, but are looking at expanding our hotel to 220 rooms with the upcoming expansion plans. This will then increase our capacity to more than 400 guests in-house. Hotel Insider: The country’s tourism industry is heading towards mass tourism, with big international players establishing themselves here. What are your thoughts on this? And will the Maldives still be able to stay ahead of competition? Steve Ng: As a tourist destination, when you compare it to Seychelles, Mauritius or Fiji,
Maldives is already ahead of the competition! The beautifully formed atolls and gorgeous islands, crystal clear waters and sandy beaches are so different here, and it already promises guests an incomparable experience. Sadly, though, the general upkeep of the country is sorely lacking, with garbage being a major problem. Our hotel sees a lot of garbage washing up on our beach area, and it takes a lot of time and effort to clean it up. Once, we even had a mini fridge wash up our beach, can you imagine? I worry that if it continues this way, tourists will be greatly turned off by the amount of garbage, especially considering how much they have spent to come here for a holiday. It would be really sad state if our guests do not return because of the negative experience that they have had here. Hotel Insider: Can you share your thoughts on Maldives’ marketing approach? Steve Ng: Personally, I think that MMPRC is doing a good job especially under the leadership of managing director Thoyyib. I believe MMPRC has plans to visit many places, and I am also joining them for a trip to Korea next month for a roadshow. I have also heard that they are planning to go to Russia, which I feel is a good move as Russian guests have proven to be big spenders and we should continue to engage them. Hotel Insider: As a parting question, what do successful hoteliers do differently, do you think? Steve Ng: I cannot claim to be a successful hotelier, but I always believe that we should never remain static. We should always venture into new things. Our hotel has been around eighteen years, and so it is crucial that we should not remain as merely an airport hotel. There will always be hiccups, but we should learn from them and move on, and take on more challenges. We cannot just remain comfortable, and this is something that I believe strongly in. Hotel Insider: Thank you so much for your time, Steve.

Opportunity for sustainable tourism to accelerate Maldives’ sustainable development
14
Hotel Insider
As a new comer to the Maldives, just like other foreigners, I was instantly attracted by the country’s natural beauty. I am also fully aware of Maldives’ outstanding economic achievement. Maldives has doubled GDP per capita from USD 4,460 to USD 9,760 between 2007 and 2017 and has transformed from a low to middle income status in a matter of decades. Needless to say, tourism has been the central driver of this amazing economic achievement. However, we have also witnessed the volatility of the sector, which negatively affected Maldivians in recent years; the global financial crisis of 2007, and the mass coral bleaching event of 2016 to name a few. Each of these instances created ripple effects in the lives and livelihoods of Maldivians involved not just in the tourism sector, but also the many subsidiary industries that support it. It’s time for us to think earnestly about the development of a tourism industry that is more sustainable and resilient, but also acts as a catalyst to unlock local socioeconomic development in an integrated and transformative manner. So what exactly is Sustainable Tourism? At the UN we refer to it as the kind of tourism that takes full account of its current and future impacts on the economy, society and the environment. It is a tourism that does not just address the needs of its visitors, but also considers rights and needs of its host communities. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognizes the potential of sustainable tourism industry in achieving SDGs 1 (Poverty), 8 (Decent work) and 12 (Responsible consumption). In Maldives’ case, I would like to add 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life below water) as relevant goals. Accordingly, the tourism sector that is developed towards achieving SDGs should promote 3 main dimensions; environmental integrity, social justice and inclusive economic development. As we are aware, the Maldives’ tourism, which heavily depends on the country’s natural beauty, is under serious danger from global and local events. Changing climate and warming seas have bleached the spectacular coral gardens. Strong currents and unpredictable weather patterns are eroding our beaches. These events threaten not just the tourism sector, but the survival of ordinary Maldivians across the country. In addition to consequences of globalwarming, localized human-made activities have caused an adverse effect on the environment. The damage created by ocean plastic wastes is just one example. In the Partnership Forum held two weeks ago, I was pleased to learn of the current
government's commitments to advance principles of Blue Economy, ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and overall ocean ecosystem health. I hope that this high-level political commitment will transform the local tourism development to practise sustainable tourism principles across the Maldives. The second dimension of Sustainable Tourism is social and cultural development. A few weeks ago, the country was visited by the UN Special Rapporteur in the field Cultural Rights. She observed that “parts of the tourist industry in Maldives had been operating in a somewhat separate, parallel universe, where tourists were not given adequate opportunities to see or hear Maldivian performing arts and culture, share Maldivian cuisine or learn about Maldivian ways of life and crafts.” She stressed that “cultural knowledge and practices be revived, professionalized or used to find new developments in the interaction with visitors.” Efforts in this regard can be employed by the Tourism Sector to drive local economies, as well as to enrich local cultures. The third dimension of Sustainable Tourism is that of enhancing equality and economic justice for all. 40 years since the advent of tourism, major gaps still remain in development gains, between the capital city Male’ and other islands. According to the 2014 Maldives Human Development Report commissioned by UNDP, for instance, a person living in Male’ is likely to receive twice more income, and complete 3 more years of schooling, than a person living in an outer island. More recently, the Household Income and Expenditure Survey of 2016 states that “91.1 percent of the country's poor population live in the Atolls (other than Male’).” Tourism sector can contribute immensely to drive local economies in their surrounding communities. Instead of working as independent entities that either import, or create subsidiary industries within our own premises, the Tourism Sector could invest in neighboring communities to drive local businesses for example: agriculture and fisheries, ultimately diversifying and strengthening local economies. As of 2014, one-fifth of all employed Maldivians work in the tourism industry. And of this sizeable workforce, 14% work in resorts. However, less than 4% of this resort workforce are women. Greater attention needs to be given to drive more
women and youth into employment in the tourism sector, by reducing obstacles to work in resort islands and enhancing their professional skill sets. This involves enabling decent work and living conditions for staff, and providing opportunities for job advancement within the hierarchy of tourism establishments. Sustainable practices in tourism development also require business operators to assess the future of tourism in the Maldives. Globally, we are seeing rapid changes in how tourism is practiced. These changes are coming about to complement changes in the mindset of travellers, who are increasingly aware of how decisions they make have lasting impacts on local communities. There is also a greater interest from travelers to interact and experience local communities and their ways of life. To be sustainable, the tourism sector needs to assess and adapt to these global changes. Locally UNDP has partnered with the Maldivian government on key initiatives such as the Baa Biosphere reserve, and the Tourism Adaptation Project. The Baa Biosphere Reserve in particular, is an example of how carefully planned sustainable tourism practices can generate local development, while also protecting the environment. In this vein, it is my hope that greater resources and partnerships are ensued in the area of sustainable tourism, in order to ensure local development is truly inclusive and sustainable.

Ihsan A. Naseer Hotel Insider talks with Ihsan Naseer CEO of Raisecrown Group, a company that’s embarking on a project the likes of which the Maldives hasn’t seen. To say that the project is ambitious is a bit like saying the hydrogen bomb is destructive.
If successful, it could open a radical new chapter of the Maldives, not only of the nation as a nonpareil destination but it has social, economic, environmental and educational ramifications. Hotel Insider: We understand you’re undertaking a very ambitious project in Hulhumale: Project ORB which includes Rasbavana THE ORB, THE ORB Land, The Crescent, the latter which also houses an aquarium. Let’s talk about THE ORB first. It’s the project’s centrepiece, a spherical, football-shaped structure built on the lagoon. What can you tell our audience about it? Ihsan Naseer: The intention behind THE ORB is to give the Maldives a facelift. It’s about a total makeover, a full rebranding of the country. It’s not just about putting the Maldives on the map but making the Maldives the unrivalled, unparalleled and the most sophisticated destination in the world. Rasbavana means the grand globe in Dhivehi. It is our image of the perfect globe. Two years back, I sat down with a former senior official of MMPRC with regards to a promotional campaign of the Maldives for another project. He flatly said that ‘the brand 16
Hotel Insider
‘Maldives’ is about the art of doing nothing. It’s where a guest comes and spends a week on the beach reading a book, without worry and gets bored thereafter because there’s nothing else to do.’ I said ‘yes but now we need to do something’ [laughs]. If someone wants to spend millions on a shopping spree, they probably won’t consider the Maldives. We have nature’s gifts, the beaches, the lagoons, but we don’t have the facilities to complement them. We’re still engaged on a very, very primitive level economically, we’re just using nature’s raw ingredients. Honestly speaking, the remark saddened me deeply. It saddened me the most because it is true. For me, it was a very strange reality check and I made it my mission to develop something truly extraordinary for the Maldives. Something that complements the astonishing beauty of this paradise on Earth. That’s when I started working on Project ORB and we’ve exhausted the past two years on just that. THE ORB is about sophistication, it’s about incorporating the beauty of the Maldives with the height of technology and innovation. It’s about the evolution of the brand that crafted for ages ‘the art of doing nothing’ to become the global think tank or
the intellectual capital of the world. For us, this project will be what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, or Burj Khalifa is to Dubai. Hotel Insider: That’s dreaming big, all right. And where did you draw inspiration for this? Cornwall’s Eden Project came to mind when we thought about THE ORB at first as we weren’t provided a visual. Plus, THE ORB’s football inspiration expresses an intimate connection with the people, football being the country's favourite sport. Ihsan Naseer: Yes, it’s a nod towards football, inspired by the nation’s passion for the sport. The project was to be a guerrilla advertisement initially, the creation of the world’s largest football to be precise. We wanted to have a giant helium football hovering over the land. And to do that for a few days was going to cost us millions of dollars. Then we thought we’d build such a structure on a lagoon nearby, make it sort of semi-permanent for two or three years and have tourists come, take selfies and hopefully make it viral. It would mean a lot of exposure for the Maldives. It would have some sort of momentum, add to the Maldives’ image. Having that structure pre-fabricated was going to cost us millions of dollars, too.
Hotel Insider

In the Boardroom
So, from that point onwards, it evolved into something else – we thought: what if we make this the permanent face of the Maldives? What if we do a full rebranding of the Maldives through it? I mean, the idea of spherical structure is ancient but nobody has done it at this scale and what better place to do it than here? Then we underwent a massive R&D process and devoted all our time and exhausted all our energies on developing what would become the face of the Maldives. We approached the top architects in the world and other global partners and they absolutely fell in love with it. It was the textbook definition of love-at-first-sight. The reason why we considered football is because we want a lot more to be done for the sport here. Our vision to develop football is what led us to do this and with Project ORB, we will develop football and other sports much, much further. Hotel Insider: As for The Crescent, part of it is going to lie on the seabed, and that's going to hold hotel rooms. We're going through a major underwater phase now in hospitality, Conrad's got their underwater room, plus a few new resorts, like Hurawalhi and You & Me, have underwater restaurants. What's going to set the rooms at Crescent apart? Ihsan Naseer: It will be a radical new addition to the entire hotel industry worldwide. The idea is to create a remarkable, once in a lifetime experience – the most expensive and luxurious experience so to speak. The suites will be placed on the seabed. Guests will have access to views and experiences that once belonged only to scuba divers. It will easily be the eighth wonder. Hotel Insider: These underwater suites, will they be part of a larger hotel complex? Ihsan Naseer: Yes. I think we’ll have about eight suites on the seabed, offering this very exclusive underwater vista. Hotel Insider: All right. Once complete, THE ORB will have eight levels, with room for office space, exhibition floors, a shopping centre among others. What kind of businesses do you hope to attract to THE ORB? Ihsan Naseer: Let me put it this way – if the Oscars were to be held at a venue other than the Kodak theatre, it will definitely be THE ORB. That’s what we’re going to offer the world. A totally unique experience. I don’t think there’d be an experience to rival it. We’re aiming for the height of excellence. We’ll create that through a fusion of the best, and most cutting-edge technology and design plus the limited and exclusive nature of the structure. The ORB would house just 18
Hotel Insider
one office, one hotel and only one apartment – a very lucky individual could call THE ORB their home. The office space there will be on the top three floors. It will provide the perfect blend of business and pleasure and will completely redefine our understanding of such spaces. Hotel Insider: We guess that means you’re targeting businesses abroad? Ihsan Naseer: [laughs] Yes, indeed and more. Along with THE ORB comes a sustainable financial centre and an educational hub, which we’ve dubbed ORB Land. The whole purpose of the project is to attract big business from around the globe and also establish some of the world’s best educational institutes here. We’ve already secured partnerships with the University of California Santa Barbara and Cornell University and many more are engaging with us, as we speak. UCSB will be conducting marine research and Cornell will establish a hospitality faculty here. The sustainable financial hub would be a catalyst in bridging investments in South Asia and East Africa. At the same time, it will play a very vital role in being a global sustainable financial centre to pioneer ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) investments within the wider region, introducing innovative financial instruments as such green sovereign bonds, blue bonds and so on. This is what we call a ‘Blue Economy’ – a conceptual economic model proposed by the World Bank Group. We’re working with a wide range of UN bodies and other international agencies to make this happen and so far, the support we’ve received is fantastic. The world is desperately waiting for something beautiful like this. Hotel Insider: We love the idea of the Maldives becoming a sustainable financial hub. And it’s surprising that one of the best destinations in the world, especially one that’s renowned for marine life, doesn’t have a world-class marine research centre or hospitality institute. Ihsan Naseer: Yes, we plan to change that. The project will house the world’s largest undersea aquarium and a state-of-the-art marine research laboratory- the very best in the world. The fish in the aquarium will be in their natural habitat. They won’t be caged. Hotel Insider: What about the energy requirements for these structures, do you plan to go with renewables? Ihsan Naseer: It will be one hundred per cent from renewable means. We can do that now, there are resorts doing this already so why can’t we? It’s an investment but it pays off, economically and environmentally.
In previous business models, the business takes precedence over the environment. That’s how it was done for centuries following the industrial revolution. But now we’re dealing with the fallout of that paradigm. Our model will be a paradigm shift – we know now how much we depend on the environment so we’re going to take every measure to protect it. We’re living in the dawn of a new era. If this project works out the way we hope, and we’re very confident that it will, it will not only be environmentally sustainable but socially and economically as well. It will benefit the people through the businesses we attract, it will make it easy for our people to get into business. There are lots of good ideas in the Maldives but we don’t have good enough ways to promote them and make them successful. Hotel Insider: Yeah, we need venture capitalists and incubators and so forth to help young people become successful. There’s nowhere to go with a good idea. Ihsan Naseer: Yes, what I envision is a Maldives where good ideas get rewarded. We’ll have an excellent banking system with a strong focus on promoting SMEs, one that provides hassle-free financing for start-ups. I’ve always believed that the Maldives is not poor – we’re a rich country, rich not only in natural endowments but also ideas. We just need a nurturing environment for those ideas to gestate and come to fruition and it’s my goal to create one. Hotel Insider: It seems to us that this project can only be a phenomenal success or a spectacular failure. There’s no middle ground. What gives you the confidence to pursue it? Ihsan Naseer: [laughs] There are no failures – you learn and try again. Try till you succeed. The dreams of this world and age are great and it is worth every sacrifice. It’s a brave new world with unbridled opportunities. That’s the reality I believe in. I believe it’s important to dream. And if you’re dreaming, why not dream big? When you stop dreaming, that’s failure to me. That’s when you’ve grown old and have your tail between your legs. If I fail, I will learn from it and persevere. Hotel Insider: Thank you, Ihsan. Bradley Calder Cluster general manager, Hurawalhi Island Resort & Kudadoo Maldives
Bradley Calder is a Kiwi, mentored by several hospitality professionals as he worked around the world, but none more so than Brian Clivaz, a respected and renowned figure in British hospitality. Brad was into tourism from the get-go and jumped a chance to work in London quickly after finishing studies in Auckland.
His journey has also taken him to a couple of island destinations including Fiji and Bali and he made his mark in the Maldives at Gili Lankanfushi. Brad isn’t too keen on mass tourism but he believes Crown and Champa Resorts (CCR), who owns Hurawalhi and Kudadoo, will survive the ‘onslaught’ of new openings.
Hotel Insider: You studied hospitality management in Auckland, New Zealand and you went to the UK soon after graduation. What led to that big move? Bradley Calder: Yes, London was where I learnt to apply my trade, so to speak. Because at the time in New Zealand (late 90s-early 2000s), hospitality was still in the early stages. The café culture was just starting to catch on. Prior to that, you’d be limited to big hotels with their restaurants and that was it. So, I went to London and I stayed there for six years. I worked for a private members’ club called Home House for four of those years. The managing director of that establishment, Mr Brian Clivaz, previously of the Savoy Hotel in London was a very good mentor [note – Clivaz is famous in hospitality circles and is a Fellow at the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts]. I learnt so much from him about luxury hospitality and serving discerning clientele. After six years in London, I came back home to spend time with family and spent two years in Auckland with Stamford Hotels & Resorts formerly the Regent Hotel. Hotel Insider: Another city hotel. Bradley Calder: Yes. I was working in a city hotel in Auckland and I’d done that in London as well.
After getting married on the tropical island of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, I thought ‘why am I working in a city hotel? Resorts are much more fun.’ [laughs]. And people in resorts are generally happier than people in city hotels. There was a VIP who was staying at my hotel in Auckland and one day, he tapped me on the shoulder and asked me if I wanted to work at his resort in Fiji. So, yeah, I did three years in Fiji, as director of food and beverage at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa. Looking for a new challenge I moved to a Hard Rock Hotel in Bali next, and worked first as a director of F&B for a year, then as an executive assistant manager [assistant GM] for four years. The owning company, HPL, decided to transfer me up to the Maldives to work at Gili Lankanfushi and I spent three wonderful years there as resort manager. Hotel Insider: That’s cool. I’d like to know a bit more about your Fiji experience, though, as the Maldives is sort of similar. Bradley Calder: I’ve got a saying about going from London to Fiji. In London, people have everything that they want but they’re not always the happiest people. Then you go down to Fiji and they have very little but they are the happiest people day in and day out. But then, coupled with that is their work ethic. It’s not at all like the Maldives. Hotel Insider: [laughs] What do you mean? Bradley Calder: [laughs] Well, they’re very friendly but not that efficient. It’s almost like steps on a ladder, you know, from Fiji to Bali to the Maldives. I think here in the Maldives you have some of the most service focussed staff that you could desire for a destination. And generally, most resorts in the Maldives get excellent comments [on review platforms] and that’s all down to the Maldivian people. Hotel Insider

They’re very dedicated and proud of their hospitality product. They really want to make sure that guests have a good time. These are good attributes, especially if your main business is hospitality. Maldivians are very hospitable people. I mean, for me, I’m a director. I can say ‘walk this way’ but if people don’t understand the vision to follow, then I’m just a guy taking a walk, you know? [laughs]. That’s one of the reasons why I’ve stayed in the Maldives and I’ve been here six years. Hotel Insider: You scooped up quite a few titles at Gili Lankanfushi. Bradley Calder: Yes, we were number one in the world [TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards 2014] and number 2 Luxury Hotel in the world [TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards 2015]. Hotel Insider: And then you came here to Hurawalhi. This is your first GM position isn’t it? Bradley Calder: Yes, and I took on the Kudadoo project as well and did its preopening. And now I’m GM of Hurawalhi and Kudadoo, which doesn’t leave much time for diving [laughs]. Hotel Insider: Kudadoo is fifteen rooms and extremely private. Bradley Calder: Yes, fifteen rooms. And it’s the first ultra-all-inclusive in the world really. Everything is included from unlimited spa treatments, six different champagnes, private diving, private excursions. No one’s doing an all-inclusive of that calibre. And it’s proving a really popular concept – you pay just once and that’s it. You’re on holiday and you don’t have to think about anything else. I saw this opportunity in the market in the Maldives. Some properties are guilty of price-gouging people for extras. But that’ll all going to change in the coming years, now that mass market tourism is coming with all these big chains. And they’re probably prepared to 22
Hotel Insider
operate on a lower rate and still be profitable. So, yeah, you’ll find a new rate equilibrium in the Maldives over the next one to three years. Which is a bit of a shame, really, because I personally believe the Maldives would have benefitted more by presenting itself as a luxury destination. Hotel Insider: Yeah, but these new properties are still going to be four-star or three-star properties at the very least, aren’t they? Bradley Calder: Yes, and speaking of three-star, CCR [Crown & Champa Resorts] just opened its three-star property as well – Innahura. So, we’ve got a good portfolio of properties ranging from three to six stars. CCR really delivers on the value proposition in each of the segments and all of them are allinclusive. CCR has done a lot of great things in the market and I think they will survive the onslaught of new properties. Hotel Insider: What are your thoughts on that? The onslaught, I mean. Bradley Calder: The Maldives has a oneisland one-resort concept. So, you’re never going to get built up, which is a good thing. But there’s logistics. There are seaplanes, domestic planes, boat transfers, and of course, the international airport. If they can keep up with the pace of development then it will all be OK. But ultimately we need to keep finding new source markets and we need to invest significantly in destination marketing to keep all the resorts filled. Hotel Insider: So, what’s it like being in Lhaviyani Atoll? It’s far enough from Male to be outside the kind of frenzied activity in the atolls nearby. Bradley Calder: I like being up here, it’s very peaceful. There’s a limited number of resorts just on the perimeter, and very spread out. The sea life is incredible, we had about five whale shark sightings around our resort
"It's all going to change in the coming years, now that mass market tourism is coming with all these big chains. And they’re probably prepared to operate on a lower rate and still be profitable." last year. And we were joking that they’re leaving Baa [Atoll] because it’s too busy [laughs]. Hotel Insider: [laughs] And it’s really chilled out here, plus you do great food. Bradley Calder: Yes, we’re very food focussed. You can see it in the range on offer from fine dining at our 5.8 Undersea Restaurant to an ever changing buffet with its own plant based offering to exciting Asian Street food and our new concept J.F.K. (Junk Food Kitchen) which offers gourmet junk food for meat eaters and vegans. I also think that Maldives has the sophistication of service and cuisine which sets us apart. It’s a European sophistication because hospitality in the Maldives has been catering to Europeans for most of its life. So, we’re very different from the islands in the South Pacific or the Caribbean, say. People who come from America can’t believe it, and people from South Pacific and Asia are just as impressed. Hotel Insider: Thank you Brad, it was great chatting with you.

City Hotels: are they here to stay? Let’s take a look at this segment of the country’s tourism industry that has seen slow growth for the past few years. The first city hotel in the Maldives was Nasandhura Palace Hotel, opened in 1981. In the decades that followed, a small number of hotels have risen up in the city.
Compared to the hike in the number of resorts and guest houses in the country, the growth in city hotels has been quite slow. To find out why, we talked to some industry experts and a number of GMs who manage some of the top city hotels in the greater Male’ area. The Maldives tourism industry is renowned for its unique ‘one island-one resort’ model. Ultra-luxury resorts that cater to honeymooners and discerning holiday-makers made the country an exclusive destination favoured by the rich and famous. Less well known are the city hotels of the Maldives. While the typical visitor has more than 130 resorts to pick from, the choice of hotel is limited to a dozen. In the recent past, guesthouses and inns that offer more affordable rates for budget travellers and backpackers have proliferated, opening up local islands to tourists. A different clientele City hotels, however, cater to a different clientele. They serve an important function in the hospitality landscape as a second home to business travellers and diplomats who, on a given month, sleep in a different city every week. More than just a bed to rest after a long day, these travellers seek peace and quiet, great food, maybe a massage or a dip in the pool. Having a nice view is a bonus. Others are transit passengers who look for a comfortable place to rest before they reach their final destination. Most city hotels are located in Male’ city and the greater Male’ area. The most prominent one, Hotel Jen, up until recently, was the tallest building in the city. A Shangri La property, the hotel boasts occupancy that remains consistent throughout the year. Its success can be attributed to a number of factors. Hotel Jen is a preferred hotel for diplomats and business travellers for its high security and its close proximity to government offices. In addition, its ballroom and customisable meeting rooms of different sizes are important factors. Another is its many dining options and its views. There’s also a wonderful spa, gym and a rooftop pool. Jen’s rooftop restaurant Azure is also popular with locals for lunch or

coffee meetings and romantic dinners. To top it all off, there is free transportation and great service, important factors to consider when you are strapped for time. Successfully running since 2013, another hotel who cater to a large number of repeaters, most of them business travellers, is Somerset Hotel. Although located in a heavy-traffic area in the city, the hotel offers quiet comfort and warm hospitality. Somerset attributes its success to personalised service, and offering value for money. Hulhule’ Island Hotel (HIH) is also one of the top city hotels in the country. It is the only city hotel in the Maldives that serves alcohol. The hotel offers great ocean views, a pool, spa and gym. Guests can also play mini golf. And the hotel is in a secluded location, surrounded by a nice lawn and a garden. Located near the airport, for the past eighteen years, it was promoted as a transit hotel. However, with changing traveller trends, the hotel is going through a renewal to tap into new market segments, such as the clients who travel for meetings, incentives, conferencing and events, i.e. the MICE market. According to group general manager Steve Ng, (and we agree) this is an important segment for city hotels. As these travellers won’t be taking the long trip to resorts that are located hours away from Male’, city hotels need to focus more on this segment. And there is growing demand. According to Steve, HIH’s meeting hall is always booked throughout the year. “The Indian market is also growing now. When Indians do events, they go all out. Even for weddings, they book the entire hotel. When I was working in Thailand, they booked the entire hotel and the hotel was closed for three days for this event,” said Steve. Changing markets China still retains its spot as the top market, with 140,265 tourist arrivals by the end of June this year, according to the tourism ministry’s latest statistics. The Chinese market holds 16.3 per cent of the market share, with a ten percent increase in arrivals compared to the same period last year. The Indian market has become the

second largest market, with a 100 percent growth from the same period in 2018. Indian holiday makers hold a market share of ten per cent. The market has seen steady growth, which some attribute to the increasing popularity of the Maldives as a holiday destination among Indian celebrities. The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation has also been promoting the country with roadshows themed ‘Journey to the Sunny Side’ in major cities in India. The other top markets have also seen significant growth compared to the first half of last year. The Italian market has recorded 34 percent growth, with 8.7 percent of the market share followed by Germany (+19.7%), the UK (+12.6%) , Russia (+11.9%), France (23.1%), USA (+34.5%) Japan (+17.9%) and Australia (+14.3%). Tourist arrivals have increased by nineteen per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching 862,589. Maldives used to be a destination for the wealthy, but that has changed now. It is now accessible to anyone who can afford to buy a plane ticket. There are many accommodation types to choose from. As of June, there were 146 resorts in operation, 554 guest houses, 153 safari boats and twelve city hotels. Tourist arrivals reached a record 1.4 million in 2018. The government is aiming for 1.5 million visitors this year, and with the expansion of the airport, we can expect to see a significant boost in visitors in the future. The common denominators The most successful city hotels have a few things in common; comfort, delicious food, and great service. They go out of their way to make guests feel at home and special, even if it’s a transit guest who arrive late at night and leave the next morning. And repeaters enjoy special treatment, like complimentary room upgrades and discounts. They also offer special packages to business travellers. Some offer excursions and city tours to ensure that even business travellers get to enjoy the same experiences that holiday makers enjoy at island resorts, minus the villas on the beach. And they all agree that providing excellent service is the most important factor. “In order to be a successful hotel, you need to provide excellent service. That’s the most important thing. It’s part of every human being; you need to be taken 26

transportation with a limited number of vehicles can be challenging. For city hotels, the average stay is one to three nights. Due to the large number of guests who arrive and depart on a given day, housekeeping can be the busiest department at a city hotel. “The rooms, even if slept for one night have to be cleaned and made ready for the next guest. This requires efficient staff who are able to work long hours, sometimes without a break,” said Fareesha. One common complaint among city hotel managers is the high turnover of staff, especially locals. In contrast to resorts, who offer high service charge and benefits such as free accommodation and food, city hotels are comparatively smaller in operation. Finding dedicated and hardworking local staff is a challenge that all city hotels face. However, in contrast to island resorts that suffer during low season, affected by changing markets and competing with new resorts, most city hotels boast unchanged occupancy throughout the year. Demand always exceeds supply when it comes to this group of travellers. So why are there so few city hotels in the Maldives? Maybe because there aren’t many cities in the country. Space might be another factor. This might change in the future though.
care of, you need some good food. If you are unable to provide these things, you won’t succeed as a hotel,” said Fareesha Hawwa, the area general manager for the INTAL Hotels, who oversees three of its properties in the city. Resorts vs city hotels In contrast to island resorts, whose biggest challenge is the logistics of getting
supplies from Male’ and dealing with transfers during bad weather, operating a city hotel presents its own unique challenges. While island resorts only have airport pick up and drop off, city hotels cater to guests travelling to and coming from different destinations. While one guest might go to the ferry terminal, another might need transfer to the airport or the jetty. And so, arranging
The future Male’, now connected to its island suburb Hulhumale’ by a bridge, is set to expand further to the east. A larger metropolis will need establishments commensurate to its size. With the ongoing expansion of Velana International Airport, the country is poised to welcome 14 million guests per year. With this significant increase in arrivals, we can expect to see more city hotels mushrooming in the greater Male’ area. As the number of hotels increase, prices are likely to drop, which means that more people can afford to travel. Even the locals are travelling more now, choosing to spend a weekend at a hotel in Hulhumale’ or booking a hotel for parties and other events. The global tourism industry is growing fast. Social media also plays a large role in promoting destinations and setting trends. Younger generations are interested in getting out and exploring more. So, the future of city hotels is hardly bleak after all.

Wood is a theme that continues in the villas, in their furnishings and fixtures – it’s like being in your own forest cabin. We love the bathroom lights, nestled in a cute, curvy log suspended from the ceiling.

La Pasta has a South Italian ambiance thanks to its food, music and décor – oh, and we were totally enamoured of its chequered tablecloths and pretty Villeroy & Boch floral patterned plates.
Of course, what will truly impress is the Lago-designed underwater restaurant, H2O. Six metres beneath the waves, flanked by manicured coral gardens, watch the fauna while feasting on Chef Giovanni de Ambrosis’ luscious treats.
Before you bid adieu, pop over to the spa and treat your skin with top New York brand Elisabeth Arden Pro. You’ll be sad to leave but at least you’re going out glowing.

Ooredoo introduces the eSIM Swapping SIM cards on a plane is a real hassle. How many times must a card drop on the aisle and a member of the crew be summoned?
38
Hotel Insider
While it may not be a huge deal for some, it’s still an annoyance that you need to put up with because that’s simply how things are. Not anymore. Rejoice travellers, Ooredoo has embraced the eSIM. “It’s something that’s going to replace our physical SIMs,” says Shunaan Zuhair, senior executive product marketing at Ooredoo. “What’s physical is becoming virtual and that’s what this is, essentially. With Ooredoo, you won’t be needing a physical SIM anymore. We’re offering a cloud-based, virtual SIM.” Only limited devices currently support this feature – Google Pixel 3 and 3XL, iPhone XS and XS Max. And while eSIMs are supported by networks in only about 30 countries, tech pundits predict the technology will become commonplace in the next few years.
“If your phone supports eSIMs, all you need to do is visit our website Ooredoo.mv/esim, fill in some registration details and there you go! We will email you your eSIM as a QR code.” explains Shunaan. “You just need to scan the QR code, and begin installation which takes just a few seconds. Afterwards, it will be as if you’re using a physical SIM. You’ll get the same top-quality mobile services which we provide to all our customers in the Maldives.” This is obviously great news for the 1.2 million tourists that visit our sunny shores. Before flying out, tourists can conveniently purchase their tourist eSIM and upon arrival they are connected to the best network in the Maldives. “We’re also trying to see if we can get the eSIM as an add-on when a tourist books a
hotel or ticket to the Maldives,” adds Shunaan. “When they arrive, they won’t have to bother about being connected.” It’s not just travellers who’ll benefit – eSIMs could add value for travel agents as well, so, if you are interested, now’s a good time to reach out to Ooredoo. What about us locals, though? There are those who use two or three devices simultaneously and eSIMs can bring an end to their plight. They can have work, personal and other profiles all on the same phone. No more multiple devices, no more wallet full of sim cards. And it’s all very secure. “Like with physical SIMs, the eSIMs will be securely generated and provisioned over the air,” says Shunaan. “eSIMs will be issued to a
customer’s valid email address and that’s the only point of contact we’ll have with them.” This is what tomorrow holds – of that we can be fairly certain. So, get on the band wagon and be part of the future today with Ooredoo. To learn more about Ooredoo eSIMs, please visit Ooredoo.mv/esim.

The Somerset Hotel Located in Male' city, the Somerset Hotel was opened in 2013. It caters to the corporate market and welcome a large number of repeat guests.
Tucked away in a quiet alley in a busy part of the city, the hotel offers accommodations in three types; superior, super king and business deluxe suites. Its sister property, the Somerset Inn serves budget travellers. Somerset prides itself in making the guests feel special, such as surprising repeaters with room upgrades and special discounts, and providing efficient service, such as express check-in that ensures that guests do not have to wait around at the lobby. The hotel also prides itself in providing value for money for its customers. They go the extra mile by providing city tours, excursions and submarine dives to its guests. The guests also get the option to go for diving or take part in watersports, for which the hotel will make arrangements. While Somerset offers in-room dining, they encourage guests to dine downstairs at the Belle Amie Bistro. It serves a wide selection of fusion cuisine, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea. Set menu packages are also available for private events. Belle Amie is also popular with locals. The hotel manages a venue for conferences and meetings with a boardroom and a seminar hall. The space is equipped with in-built sound systems and WiFi. They offer additional services such as arranging photographers and catering as well. Guests also appreciate the complimentary airport pickup service. And if they want to go to the gym or a spa, the hotel arranges appointments at their partner gym and spa too. They go the extra mile to make things convenient for guests who are busy with other engagements. Perhaps it is for these reasons that Somerset’s occupancy stays quite consistent throughout the year. There are slow weeks during low season though, due to a dip in transit passengers. They attribute their success, however, largely to providing excellent service. The hotel has won the TripAdvisor Travellers’ choice award in 2017, among others. They are also a traveller-recommended hotel with high rankings on online booking sites. At the Somerset, they believe that happy staff makes everything better. That, they believe, is the secret to a successful business. Ganesh Kumara heads The Somerset Hotel in Male', a property blessed with an exceptional location - close to main businesses, the National Museum, the Islamic Centre, cafe's and more.

Its ground floor cafe’, Jen’s Kitchen On-the-go, is popular for its grab-andgo sandwiches, pastries, smoothies and great coffee. The food is excellent. Under Shangri La’s Rooted in Nature program, Jen serves menu items that use sustainably sourced organic and locally grown ingredients. They also support sustainable fisheries. Jen does its part by promoting Male’s restaurants and cafe’s that offer great food and service. Under its Jen Why Art program, it promotes the local art scene, giving bands and artists a platform to showcase their talents. For its special events, local bands are preferred over foreign artists. And art exhibitions held in collaboration with local artists have helped promote Maldives’ artists and forged connections between guests and artists.

Shihalini Rajaratnam Front Office Manager, Amari Havodda Maldives
Are awards meaningful? Yes, when they highlight the efforts of those on the sidelines, especially women hoteliers. Colombo native Shihalini Rajaratnam was recently recognised by the Singapore-based hotelier award platform Stelliers. Shihalini is vivacious, a natural leader who cares about the welfare of all her teammates, not just those in her charge. In our interview, we revisit her experience of winning the award and we trace the path of a one-time Standard Chartered telemarketer who became a leading light of a renowned Asian hospitality brand. Hotel Insider: Let's start off with the award you received recently – the Stelliers Front Office Hotelier of the Year South Asia. How did that make you feel? Were you at all prepared for it?

Hotel Insider
Shihalini Rajaratnam: OK. So, the application for the award started in January this year. I started filling it out and realised I’d reached so many milestones, and that made me feel proud. I sent the application out and heard back from Stelliers somewhere around March. They said I was shortlisted, and I had a Skype interview with them. I was laughing about it and thinking, “Oh, wow, I’m having a Skype interview.” But it really didn’t sink in, you know. Then the Stelliers’ academic director, Hannah Wei, interviewed me on Skype – she was very supportive. They just wanted to see if what they had on paper matched with reality. Then, around April, I received another email saying I was shortlisted as a finalist for Front Office Hotelier South Asia 2019, and that I was among five other people. I was intimidated though, because the rest of them were from big international brands like Marriot and such. Hotel Insider: Yeah, that would’ve been pretty daunting. Shihalini Rajaratnam: [laughs] Yeah, I knew I was good, but I didn’t feel I was that good, you know? But being a finalist was pretty big in itself. So, I decided to attend the ceremony. And when I arrived, it was very elegant, very beautiful and the people were nice and down-to-earth, even these big hoteliers. I was able to network with hoteliers from Singapore, Thailand and India and wine suppliers from Australia, as we all shared the same table. Then, they started giving out the awards and it was so well organised. Mine was one of the last awards to be handed out. It was right before the last award, which recognised general managers. A friend of mine received an award for HR and it made me really nervous. Then my name was called and displayed on the screen. It felt so good and so surreal. And I actually managed to give a little speech. For me, it was very special. It was about achieving something for women, the women in hospitality. I was representing them. It was really amazing. Hotel Insider: Now, let's talk about you for a bit. You have an interesting educational background – you studied computing, you did science in your A-levels then switched to marketing in college. What was going on back then? Were you testing the waters in different fields before making a decision? Shihalini Rajaratnam: I was in science because I really wanted to become a doctor. I was an excellent student, but as I was in an international school, I would have had to go
abroad to complete my medical training. And I couldn’t afford to do that. I then joined the Standard Chartered head office in Colombo. Not because I wanted to but because my parents greatly encouraged it. [laughs] Hotel Insider: Ah, OK. That makes much more sense. At Standard Chartered you were a telemarketer for a while. Shihalini Rajaratnam: Yes, I was only 18 when I joined. And I struggled a lot at the start – I didn’t really understand what I was supposed to do. In time, though, I turned out to be a star performer and even won a TV! It was a huge deal. Hotel Insider: That’s fantastic. And afterwards, you went back to study, right? Shihalini Rajaratnam: Yeah, I went to India because I wanted to pursue further studies and I did my bachelor’s degree in business management. But I was working part-time and, later on, full-time at a software company. I was doing marketing again. That’s what I did until 2009. Hotel Insider: Then you came back home to Sri Lanka. Shihalini Rajaratnam: Yes, because my parents wanted me back. But the jobs back home didn’t pay as well as those in India. At that time, my brother was in the hotel industry – he was with Atlantis Dubai. He encouraged me to join the hospitality industry. So, I applied to Aitken Spence and came to the Maldives. Back then, I couldn’t make head nor tail of the work I was doing [laughs]. I was with Adaaran and we had a large volume of guests at the resort. It meant long hours. I have to say, though, that every leader I had, from Standard Chartered to Aitken Spence, was a very good example for me. They’d always encourage me, empower me. Which is why even as a guest relations executive or a front office executive, I was able to run the front office in the absence of front office managers. We had managers come and go at Hudhuranfushi in my six years there. So, sometimes, for months on end, I’d run the show. But that helped me and gave me a lot of ideas. What I’ve understood is that you really have to focus on the team members. They’re the top priority. You have to raise their standards. Not necessarily those in my department, but every member of our team. I encourage them to study because learning should never stop. I ask a lot of Indians, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis who want to work in the Maldives to learn a language. If you want to
work at the front office, you need something extra, like Chinese or German or Japanese. Hotel Insider: And you speak quite a few languages. Shihalini Rajaratnam: Only South Asian languages. And for me to get to the next level, I’ll need to pick up one of those languages. At the next level, resort manager, you see mostly Europeans. You have to be European or learn a new language. I feel that acquiring a new language will add value to us [South Asians]. Hotel Insider: OK, getting back to your career. After five years with Aitken Spence, you went with Onyx. You’re still with them. What's good about the brand? What's it doing to make you stay? Shihalini Rajaratnam: They actually showed me what work-life balance was. I get R&R twice a year and annual leave so I’m free to travel. I try to go someplace different every time. That’s needed to keep your mind fresh and open to new ideas. And also, I get to go places with the team, which I really enjoy. The brand gives you the time to do that. And that’s very important, as you need to be well-rested and happy to deliver exceptional service. Hotel Insider: OK, lastly, we're seeing more women in the industry now than before, and women in high positions are no longer that rare. What are your thoughts on this? Shihalini Rajaratnam: Yes, we’re seeing more women in hospitality right now and Amari encourages women hoteliers. What I notice, though, is that we still have a lack of local women in the industry. I think we should create the environment for them, make their communities understand that the resort environment is safe for young women. Also, I think most local women don’t see the industry as a place where they can grow professionally, they lack vision. They might hop from department to department. And then, when another resort offers something slightly higher than what they’re getting, they’ll move on. I have two local girls in my department, and I encourage them to stay and learn as much as they can. Because one day, they will be respected for what they do, and they will be independent people. Hotel Insider: Thanks a lot, Shihalini. It was a real pleasure.

overwater villa. The island also has a dedicated chef and personal concierge team, an overwater spa and gym, five swimming pools, and an entertainment hub.
