elcome to Issue 5, Volume 7 of HOT Magazine. While the sport of polo is older than recorded history, we know that its origins are in the inspirational relationship between humans and horses. This special bond and the unique blending of athletic talents between horse and rider have helped polo evolve into The Sport of Kings. One of the most fun events to take place in Hua Hin every year occurred again on April 27th when for the 10th year Horse Polo was played on the beach in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. The Asian Beach Polo Championship is a full day and night of enjoyable activities and is one of the top highlights of the Hua Hin social calendar. The day also draws a large Bangkok contingent with celebrities, high society, Ambassadors with their families and media all coming together for a good cause. Proceeds from the affair went to the Nabha Foundation under the initiative of HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha. Put on something blue, (the dress code for the day) and turn to page 32 to see what you missed and why you will want to be there next year.

The largest multi-class sailing event of its kind in Asia, The Top of the Gulf Regatta is unique. Founded in 2005, the 2019 Top of the Gulf Regatta took place from the 30th of April to the 5th of May off the shores of Jomtien. Owned and organised by Ocean Property, the regatta is hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club with support from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Royal Thai Navy, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and Pattaya City. This being the 15th edition of this event, sailors from around the world came to compete in the penultimate event of the 2018/19 Asian Yachting Grand Prix. The Top of the Gulf regatta welcomed more than 200 boats in 16 classes across a diverse range of boat types and sizes, and sailor abilities. HOT Magazine was there and we invite you read all about it on page 58.

A woman approaches a man on the street with a monkey and asks “Sir, does your monkey bite?” He says, “No, my monkey does not bite.” She then reaches down to pet the monkey only to be immediately bitten. Outraged, she turns back to the man and says, “You just told me your monkey does not bite!” He replies, “That is not my monkey. The aforementioned will be good to remember when visiting this month’s Let’s Go destination of Lopburi where you will find plenty of monkeys. They have so many monkeys that they have a Monkey Festival every year that is a big draw for tourists. Read why and when you need to be there on page 42.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN Guest Chef ‘Tam’ shines at Anantara Hua Hin Team up Hua Hin’s #1 restaurant (as per TripAdvisor) with ‘Top Chef Thailand’ winner and expect outstanding culinary experiences to follow! And that’s precisely what happened when Chef ‘Tam’ Chudaree Debhakam presided as Guest Chef at Rim Nam – Anantara Hua Hin Resort’s signature Thai restaurant. Two nights of exquisite dining. Each Thursday evening Rim Nam host a ‘Khantoke night’ - a celebration of Lanna (northwestern Thailand) cuisine. The first night of Chef ‘Tam’ Guest Chef appearance coincided with the 'Khantoke night’. Lucky diners saw her grab this concept - where up to six small dishes, three starters followed by three mains, are served on a sharing tray (a khantoke) to the dining table. Guests applauded Chef ‘Tam’s’ skill in elevating and further refining this traditional style of Thai cuisine. The second evening, a set four courses dinner, allowed Chef ‘Tam’ to showcase her sustainable farm-totable philosophy and unique take on Thai cuisine. The culinary innovation that ‘Tam’ demonstrated through the gruelling judging of ‘Top Chef Thailand’ TV competition, that ultimately handed her the winner’s title, was evident over these two nights of food discovery.

Blue Hills is currently number 12 on the Worlds 50 best restaurants. At just 23 Chef ‘Tam’ returned to Thailand and competed in the inaugural ‘Top Chef Thailand’ competition (2017), eventually taking out the top spot over older and more experienced contenders. In a one-on-one discussion on the second evening of the Rim Nam event, Chef ‘Tam’ mentioned she was working on opening a small restaurant and house farm somewhere in Bangkok and promised to let this magazine know when and where once final details are available. Certified Destination: InterContinental Hua Hin Resort Officially Recognised for Special Event Excellence From its opening a decade ago, InterContinental Hua Hin Resort has been a favorite site for special events and important occasions. Organizers and planners within Thailand and across the world have known they can rely on the resort’s superior venues and skilled on-site staff to ensure success – and for a wide range of gatherings, from informal business meetings of a few attendees to gala weddings with guest list in the hundreds. The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) knows it too. This year TCEB has awarded InterContinental Hua Hin Resort with certification in two MICE-related categories: “Certified Special Event Venue” for Thailand and “Certified Meeting Room” for ASEAN MICE Venue. Certified Special Event Venue status in 2019 has been granted to only 16 organizations in Thailand. With this certification InterContinental Hua Hin Resort has been commended for its distinctive Larn-Rom Courtyard facility. The outdoor venue at the resort’s BluPort Wing spans 3,200 square meters of meticulously landscaped lawn and includes koi

pond, an open-air sala and majestic tamarind trees. Larn-Rom is especially popular as a wedding venue and has capacity for up to 500 guests in banquet style. The bureau’s ASEAN MICE Venue Award meanwhile has been given to only 33 recipients in all of Southeast Asia. Recipients must surpass stringent standards set by TCEB relating to meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) criteria. Each TCEB certification extends for three years. General Manager of InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, Michael Janssen, spoke to the importance of TCEB certification: ‘Being named by TCEB as a certified MICE venue is tremendously important. All events, even the smallest, require a lot of planning and commitment by organizers. For that reason,’ said Janssen, ‘they have to know they can trust us.’ Now as one of only a very select few MICE operators with TCEB Certified Special Event Venue and Certified Meeting Room designation, InterContinental Hua Hin Resort further enhances its reputation as a premier event venue in Thailand and Southeast Asia.

The Beach at Anantasila Restaurant & Bar

O

n entering this tropical hideaway, I am immediately struck by the vibrant flowering orchids, brilliant yellows, purples, reds and pinks pop from both sides of the path and make a dramatic entrance. Glimpses of the beach and calm ocean appear between palm trees as we wander further in. The resort's pool is so inviting in the softening light of this balmy early evening. And even though I've visited Anantasila Resort many times, this

entrance way is always a delight. For this writer, Anantasila invokes memories of good times, beachside afternoon cocktails, dinner on the terrace, or lunch with friends fanned by cooling sea breeze. The Beach (restaurant) at Anantasila serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and our group has come for dinner. The two-tiered terrace fronting the beach is inviting. Generously sized tables with comfortable seating, crisp table linen,

candles flickering, and wine glasses gleaming in the subdued light. Add to that, welcoming attentive staff, Khao Takiab beach and the ocean to gaze out on – and it’s an irresistible setting! The Beach restaurants very comprehensive dinner menu offers a full range of Thai dishes from starters to noodles, curries, seafood, mains and vegetables. A real tour of Thailand. The western menu extends the choice even further - soups and starters, salads and sandwiches, pasta, from the grill, plus

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND seafood and other mains. And if any of that does not catch your fancy then check out the Pizzas.

For mains, our groups chose two dishes from the Western and one from the Thai menu.

Our evening starts with a Thai Sharing Platter – chicken satays, spring rolls, crispy pork wontons and suitable dipping sauces; a Prawn Cocktail atop iceberg lettuce and accompanied by two cocktail sauces; and my personal favourite, a fresh Yellowfin Tuna Tartare flavoured with Citrus & Ginger sitting on a bed of diced avocado and cucumber. A great start to the meal.

First off, Executive Chef Pong's take on the classic northern Thai dish, Khao Soi. Egg noodles and chicken pieces sitting in a curry flavoured coconut soup and topped with crispy fried noodles. Served with the traditional condiments of pickled cabbage, coriander and shallots, and a delicious chilli jam.

The Mediterranean Grilled Salmon - pan cooked to order and served with blanched asparagus spears, basil flavoured potato mash and sundried tomato aioli. A fish lover’s delight. And to round out the mains, the Texas BBQ Pork Spare Ribs accompanied by a cream cheese topped baked potato and a serve of coleslaw. The ribs glistening with the sticky BBQ sauce and a bowl of that sweet and tangy sauce is on the side for further indulgence. That sorted the meat lover on our table.

The restaurant’s musical duo kept the atmosphere humming with an appealing array of tunes that had our table delving into our memory banks (and Google) to name the original artist or band. Great entertainment for the evening! To finish the meal, Chef Pong served us three desserts starting with Dark Chocolate & Chili Fondant. The small chocolate cake with a crisp outer shell and warm chocolate filling oozed forth as the spoon cut through the petite confection. The plate decorated artistically with a delicate chocolate lattice twirl and an almond tuile (biscuit) in the shape of a butterfly, and white chocolate ice-cream. The other desserts were a classic Baked New York cheesecake accompanied by a scoop of chocolate ice-cream, and an individual Tiramisu made even more luxurious with the addition of a small Amaretto truffle and coffee ice-cream. Deserts designed to please!

What is your current Job Position?

sometimes spending too many hours away from home or personal pursuits, so you need a partner who understands this, I am fortunate that my wife shares my passion of the industry.

I am the General Manager of the Avani+ Hua Hin Resort

What do you like most about Hua Hin?

How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin?

I love the laid back style of Hua Hin and the diversity of things you can do in the surrounding areas whether it be exploring the nearby National Parks, Rafting, Golfing or just hanging on the beach.

What is your full name and age? My name is Matthew Fryar and I consider myself a young 50.

I arrived in April 2018 after 2 ½ years living and working in Vietnam with the AVANI brand.

What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I had travelled here before and was well acquainted with Hua Hin through our sister property the Anantara Hua Hin.

What do you like most about your profession? It is hard to isolate just one as I think that those who choose a career in the hospitality industry have more than just one major ‘like’. If I had to pin it down, I would say that the friendships you make whether it is a colleague or a guest, they tend to be stronger because you have a shared passion for either the industry or travel in general.

What do you like least about your profession? You must be truly committed and have a passion for the industry in order to be successful. This results in

What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) My wife and I enjoy going to Chom Talay seafood restaurant in Cha-am the food is always fresh and in the evening the feet in the sand dining is cool.

What do you like to do in your free time and why? I love to play golf whenever I have the chance and Banyan Golf Course is my adopted home course. Its a great way to meet people whom share the same love of the game as I do.

What would you recommend to new-comers to do in Hua Hin and why? I would say join one of the many social groups around town, it’s a great way to meet people and learn about the local must-do’s Hua Hin has to offer.

Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I was married in Hua Hin at the Anantara and for my wife and I who were living in Vietnam at the time it was the ideal beachside destination to invite our friends from around the world to help us celebrate.

What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? I once ‘borrowed’ a guests Ferrari with his consent and blasted through the streets of the seaside location I was working at the time. It was the middle of the Australian summer and it was a cabriolet, needless to say my colleague and I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day.

hile the sport of polo is older than recorded history, we know that its origins are in the inspirational relationship between humans and horses. This special bond and the unique blending of athletic talents between horse and rider have helped polo evolve into The Sport of Kings. Polo has been an international sport since at least 821 A.D., when Chinese ambassadors in Japan played a team fielded by the Emperor. The world’s oldest active club is the Calcutta Polo Club, established in 1862. In the U.S., the first international match was in Newport, R.I., in August 1886. The Westchester Polo Club challenged the British to put up a silver trophy (today’s Westchester Cup) and after two convincing losses saw the prize sail away. The Cup is presently in England, who won the most recent challenge. Today, upwards of 84 countries play polo. In Thailand, Polo is played at the Thailand Equestrian Federation’s Thai Polo & Equestrian Club, a 2,000rai facility in Pattaya that houses 3 full sized international-standard polo playing grounds, each with their own clubhouse.

The first goal came in the second half of the first chukka from Argentine professional Diego Gomez for the China/Korea team. The second chukka saw the first goal by Justin Jin also for China/Korea followed by two goals from Thailand’s Worajit Wongkraso “Ead”. The third chukka had just one goal scored by David Ko for China/Korea taking them into the lead on handicap. Ead, took another goal at the start of the 4th chukka, levelling the match followed quickly by a goal from Diego Gomez. Thailand responded with another goal from Ead. The spectators were cheering and getting very involved with every play encouraging the teams along.

The 5th and final chukka saw no less than five goals scored between both teams. Diego Gomez led the chukka taking them ahead, followed by David Ko and Justin Jin also for China/Korea. In the closing minutes, Harald Link for Thailand scored two goals in quick succession, but it wasn’t enough to level the scores. China/Korea won 8 goals to 7.5. A very entertaining, good spirited match with loads of action for the excited spectators who were watching beachside. With the completion of the Cup Presentation the day time activities ended and the nighttime activities kicked in. Guests were treated to a superb InterContinental buffet, free flowing libations, a Hawaiian “Aloha” themed show, a raffle with great prizes and an auction. Those who have attended many years of Beach Polo ranked this one as one of the very best and were pleased to see the evening cocktail party back on the lawn of the InterContinental where it hadn’t been for several years. Beach Polo is one the most fun yearly events to happen in Hua Hin. If you didn’t make it this year be sure to put it on your social calendar for next.

Lopburi

W

ith a population of about 20,000 inhabitants, Lopburi is a quiet town located in central Thailand, only a two hour drive from Bangkok. While it is small, it’s a good place to monkey around—no, you heard me, right. The old town is famous for its monkeys, especially the Monkey Temple where they run amok. You’ll find them everywhere: napping on Buddha statues in ruined temples, watching you from rooftops and holding up traffic while they cross the streets in mobs. The old town is

42

HOT Magazine

one of Thailand’s oldest occupied cities and if you look past those cheeky little monkeys, you’ll find some amazing things to do in Lopburi. Set in the province’s far southern reaches, Lopburi town is closely related to other ancient cities in the Chao Phraya River basin, such as Singburi, Ang Thong, Suphanburi and Ayutthaya. Defined by flowing waterways and fertile paddies, this general area was a cradle of Mon/Khmer and later Siamese/Thai civilizations stretching back well over a thousand years. Once called Lavo (or sometimes Luovo or

Lavapura), the name is supposedly an allusion to the ancient name of Lahore in modern Pakistan. Supposedly, the settlers of Lopburi were originally from that region. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area has been settled since Neolithic time. When the Khmer Empire absorbed the kingdom in the tenth century, it gave birth to the most ancient structures in the city such as Prang Sam Yod (the aforementioned Monkey Temple) and Prang Kaek. Dating back to the thirteenth century, the Monkey Temple is the most famous attraction in Lopburi. It’s also totally

overrun with monkeys, and it’s in this area that the town’s annual monkey festival happens in November each year — the locals hold a banquet for the monkeys, with a buffet of food laid out on tables for them to feast on. This quirky festival also includes parades, folk performances and plenty of monkeying around. Just across the road from the Monkey Temple is the San Phra Kan shrine where giant mounds of bananas are given as “tribute” to the awaiting monkeys. A folktale holds that the mythical King Rama gifted the city to Hanuman,

the noble monkey warrior and “son of the wind” who helped Rama rescue his wife Sita in the Ramayana epic. Today the line between “venerable descendants of Hanuman” and “mischievous pests” is a thin one. While generally docile and used to humans, the simians do occasionally bite, especially if a mother feels that her babies are under threat. They also hang from power cables and scamper over the train tracks that run straight through the old town. Keep food and valuables secure when you’re out and about -- it’s all fun and games until

one of them creeps up your back and dashes off with your camera. Temple enthusiasts might venture south over the border into Saraburi province to explore the ornate Wat Phra Phutthabat, or strike west into tiny Singburi to see ancient reliefs at Wat Lai and a 46-metre-long reclining Buddha image at Wat Phra Non Chaksi. There’s also Wat Khao Wongkot, a forest temple with a large bat cave located 20 kilometres north of Lopburi town

Lopburi is easily accessible by bus and train and is on the main railway line that runs between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. It’s about 2.5 hours from Bangkok or an hour from Ayutthaya. Most of the ruins and attractions are located near the train station such as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat. The 12th century compound was built during the rule of the Khmer Empire and it is truly an impressive site worth visiting. The entrance fee is currently 50 baht. Lopburi’s most famous ruins and attractions are in a compact area and you can easily take them all in within a day, and most people recommend going on a Wednesday which is when the local night market is set up as well. Packed with locals shopping and buying delicious food such as roti, pad thai and massaman curry, even plaa salid tôrd (deep-fried salted fish), a local favorite. In the seventeenth century, King Narai revived Lopburi's fortunes when, according to some accounts, western colonialists appeared to threaten Siam. He rebuilt many of the old temples and created a large palace in the city. The city faded into obscurity until King Rama IV rebuilt the old palace as the Phiman Mongkut Pavilion a century later. Next

to King Mongkut's residence is the Chantra Paisan Pavilion. This templelike building was originally built by King Narai and used as his audience hall before the Suttha Sawan Pavilion was completed. Today, the buildings constructed and renovated by King Mongkut now house the collections of the King Narai National Museum. The Somdet Phra Narai National Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but when open, visitors pay an entrance fee of 150 baht to view an extensive collection of antiquities, with a special emphasis on the "Lopburi" period of Khmer inspired art and architecture. The palace grounds play host to an annual fair usually held around Makha Bucha day, which generally falls in February. About 40 km east of the ancient city, in Phatthana Nikorn district lays some of the biggest sunflower fields of Thailand that blossom between November and January. One of the largest stretches are at the foot of Khao Chin Lae, a 240-metre-high limestone massif festooned with more than 40 rock climbing routes. Vast fields of commercially grown sunflowers have proved a popular weekend day trip. The district also hosts a relatively new tourist attraction—a beautiful fern garden (Rai Sap Prayun). And on the way, don’t miss out on the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam. Earning the title of the largest reservoir in Thailand’s central region, Pa Sak Jolasid Dam was erected as part of the Maenam Pa Sak Royal Development Project, a royal initiative by His Majesty King Bhumibol. The State Railway of Thailand operates a special route to and from Bangkok-Pa SakJolasid Dam every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday. The railway leads to Pa Sak Basin Museum and a scenic lookout point above the dam. It is highly recommended to take the train in the cooler season between November and January. The train runs daily from 7.30 AM to 6.30 PM. The fare is 25 baht for adults and 10 baht for children. Other than that brave monkey leaning through your window (if you’re not careful), Lopburi is still a tranquil old town. You’ll find that apart from a couple of mustsee attractions, part of Lopburi’s charm lies in walking around and spotting ancient ruins popping up unexpectedly throughout the town — on the other side of the river, on a traffic island, you name it.

Inclusivity Reigned at the 2019 Top of the Gulf

A

s the largest multi-class sailing event of its kind in Asia and the only regatta in Thailand hosted at a marina, The Top of the Gulf Regatta is unique. Founded in 2005, the 2019 Top of the Gulf Regatta happened 30th April to 5th May off the shores of Jomtien (Pattaya). Owned and organised by Ocean Property, the regatta is hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club with support

58

from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Royal Thai Navy, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and Pattaya City. As the 15th edition of this event, sailors from around the world came to compete in the penultimate event of the 2018/19 Asian Yachting Grand Prix. The Top of the Gulf regatta welcomed more than 200 boats in 16 classes across a diverse range of boat types and sizes, and sailor abilities.

Competing classes included Optimists and Lasers, 29ers and 49ers, 420s and 470s, and beach catamarans, through to ocean multihulls, keelboats, one-design 25-foot Platus, and even radio controlled IOM Sailboats. Inclusivity has been at the heart of the Top of the Gulf Regatta since it was first sailed in 2005, and to this aim organisers added a Para Sailing class for the first time this year, using the S\

V14 two-person dinghy. The S\V14 is a uniquely designed boat to enable people with disabilities to enjoy sailing. Over four days (2 – 5 May) sailors from France, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Indonesia, Estonia, Philippines, Russia and Thailand competed in the inaugural Thailand S\ V14 Para Sailing Championship. Ultimately, organisers who have been working closely with World

Sailing to introduce Para Sailing to Thailand, hope to be able to support the development of a Thailand para sailing team which can compete at the international level. The Top of the Gulf Regatta has a reputation for delivering close and competitive racing, and this year’s competition was no different. Thankfully the weather over the 5 days was conducive to competitive sailing.

Results by Class In the Keelboats and Multihull, the Australian manned Team Hollywood with Ray Roberts at the helm took the honours for Class 1: IRC Fleet 1. Thailand-based THA7 with 2010 World Optimist Champion Noppakao Poonpat at the helm and ex national team sailors onboard claimed second place.

In IRC Fleet 2, Fujin (AUS) came into their own putting together a string of seven wins from the last seven races on the final day to win the class. Tenacious (AUS) performed better in the long races at the beginning of the series, but kept Fujin honest throughout, finishing second overall ahead of Lawana (THA) who claimed third on count back from Ink Zone (AUS). IRC Fleet 3 saw Team Spray (JPN) find their sweet spot and string together a series of firsts and seconds on the final day to top the standings. MoonShadow2 (GBR) who performed better in the stronger breeze earlier on in the regatta had to settle for second overall with SailQuest Hi Jinks (USA) in third. The Platu class traditionally delivers

some of the closet racing in the regatta, and this year did not disappoint with just seconds the deciding factor in many of the races. Of the 12 Platus competing this year six made the podium but it was Chris Way's Easy Tiger V who put in a dominating performance finishing with six firsts and three second places in the 12-race series to win by a clear margin. Last year's winner, Team ViewPoint, placed second just two points ahead of top Thai boat, Pine Pacific, skippered by Ithinai Yingsiri. For the Multihulls Bob Garner's BladeRunnerIX (GBR) finished their series with five wins from six races and a comfortable class victory. Sonic (THA) placed second overall with a string of second places beating out the French entry, Edenko.

Thailand Optimist Open Championship Known for the Optimist class and support of youth sailing in Thailand, the 15th Top of the Gulf Regatta saw more than 80 youngsters split into Gold and Silver fleets. All competing in the new Thailand Optimist Open Championship. For the Gold fleet, Panwa Boonak (THA) won comfortably while in second place Bowonnan Chanram (THA) edged out M.L. Weka Bhanubandh by a point, who had to settle for third overall. In the Silver fleet, Pitipoom Jaroenpon (THA) dominated with a 23 point winning margin from Supakan Kerdsakul (THA) in second and Amonwan Aphiwatudomkun (THA) just three points further back in third.

2019 Bentley Continental GT

O

riginally slated to be released in November 2017, Bentley’s Continental GT proved to be well worth the wait when it made its European debut in May 2019. Bentley's Continental line has always aimed to capture the essence of the grand touring automobile, with elegant styling, bespoke leather and wood, opulent seating, and more than a hint of dynamic capability. But the first modern Bentley Continental

66

HOT Magazine

GT — introduced in 2003 and finally discontinued last year — never quite hit the mark. The new Continental GT features innovations throughout the drivetrain, making it the most advanced Bentley model ever built. At a glance, it may look like an evolution of its predecessor, but there's a revolution underneath. The redesigned Continental GT's classic rear-wheel-drive proportions are

unmistakable. Because the front axle has moved forward relative to the cabin and there's less mass ahead of the axle, the hood looks long and prominent, as befits a grand-touring coupe. At the nose, the LED matrix headlights utilize many smaller LED modules to fine-tune the beam pattern for the driving conditions. In the sheet metal department, meanwhile, a special hotstamping technique used previously only on fenders is now employed

on every exterior panel, resulting in sharper lines and smoother curves. It gives the Continental a unique softly chiseled look that isn't overdone. Continental's 12.3-inch touchscreen display is decidedly modern but is part of a rotatable triangular prism, so if you want to take a quick trip back in time, you can power the display away and instead reveal three analog gauges or a wood panel that blends in with the rest of the dash. For audiophiles,

there are three systems to choose from. The base unit is a 10-speaker 650-watt audio system that anyone would be happy with. In the middle of the range is a Bang & Olufsen 1,500-watt system with 16 speakers. Topping it all off is an insane Naim 2,200-watt, 18-speaker system with Active Bass Transducers built into the front seats. The brand's bespoke approach to leather, wood and metal remains in full effect. New technology such as the Continental’s

48-volt active anti-roll bars at the front and rear axles, three chamber dynamic air suspension system and the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission indicate that the big Continental GT will corner flatter, ride better over varied terrain and conditions, and shift more rapidly and precisely than ever before.

HOT Magazine

67

Under the hood, however, the 2019 Continental GT retains its predecessor's distinctive 6.0-liter W12 engine, albeit with new tweaks that should improve both performance and efficiency. The W12, which is more like a squished V12, produces a monstrous 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque with the aid of dual twin-scroll turbochargers. That output gets sent

68

HOT Magazine

to a variable all-wheel-drive system that sends power to the front wheels only when necessary, ensuring the big coupe maintains a sporty rear-wheeldrive nature. Mainly driving the rear wheels also increases efficiency, and the W12 can also shut down six of the cylinders to further minimize fuel consumption. Four driving modes are accessible at the turn of a dial. Comfort

optimizes the chassis and drivetrain for luxurious cruising, while Sport mode retunes the engine for a more dynamic response – with the variable exhaust valve adjusting the character of the exhaust note to match. The Bentley mode provides the optimum combination of Sport and Comfort, while a Custom mode allows you to configure your own settings for future

use. Using the available launch control function, Bentley says the Continental GT can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds (0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds) and deliver a phenomenal top speed of 207 mph (333 km/h). The new Continental GT First Edition is the most exquisitely appointed expression of the new car. Created to celebrate the launch of this ground-

breaking grand tourer, it represents a stunning showcase of Bentley craftsmanship and design. Built by hand, it offers practically limitless scope for personalization. Taken together, the vast range of options available for both the interior and exterior of your car ensure you need never see another one like it. The new Continental GT can be commissioned

with stunning dual veneers, in which the natural grain of wood is contrasted with clean, minimalist Grand Black, the two finishes separated by a Chrome Pinstripe – a 3mm strip of polished chrome, tracing a ring around the cabin. Alternatively, there is a choice of eight single veneers, including the new Koa and Crown Walnut veneers, any of which can be enhanced by the same

Chrome Pinstripe used in the dual veneers. There are 15 interior hides to choose from covering everything from the seats and the dashboard top to the door panels and car headliner. They are Magnolia, Camel, Linen, Portland, Saddle, Brunel, Cumbrian Green, Burnt Oak, Damson, Cricket Ball, Hotspur, Newmarket Tan, Porpoise, Imperial Blue and Beluga. Carpets can be chosen to match either the main hide or secondary hide. Hand cross-stitching is now also available to compliment your choice of hides. The elegant, wide center console can be commissioned with a sleek finish inspired by the Côtes de Genève finish used inside mechanical wristwatches. To complement the car’s striking interior design, the interior mood lighting

(fitted as standard) can be configured to your preference. With lighting strips created to accentuate the car’s key design lines, you can choose vibrant or muted settings in seven colors, as well as backlighting the tread plates in your chosen color. The seats are minimalist in style, with a streamlined design that ensures they are as comfortable as they are elegant. Smooth center panels maximize the effectiveness of heating, cooling, ventilation and massage functions, while handcrafted quilting adds detail to the bolsters and upper areas – parts of the seats that can be seen from outside the car. The seat memory selectors are located in the door pads, allowing you to select your preferred seating position with a flick of a switch before you even sit down. A satin chrome handle is used to tilt each rear seat forward and access the rear of the cabin, with an alternative ‘express’ switch, which moves the seat electrically instead. As Bentley describes it, “Whichever version you choose, and whatever your destination, the new Continental range will take you there in unmistakable style.” The Continental GT is now available in Thailand with a price of 22.1 million THB. Bumrungrad Health Briefs Dengue Fever in Thailand: What You Need to Know Highlights • Thailand’s May-through-September rainy season is also the peak period for dengue fever • The dengue virus can only be transmitted from mosquito-to-person; it is not transmitted person-to-person • Infection symptoms include high fever, flu-like symptoms, and skin rashes • You should see a doctor if you experience dengue symptoms Thailand’s rainy season from May through September coincides with the highrisk period for dengue fever, a potentially serious condition most prevalent in tropical countries. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carry the virus that causes dengue fever and infect 50 million people a year, including 500,000 serious cases requiring hospitalization (source: WHO).

Transmission: Virus-carrying mosquitoes breed in clear water and are usually found in and around urban housing developments. They are most active in the daytime. The virus can only be transmitted from mosquitoto-human; it is not passed from one person to another. Symptoms: Once a person is bitten by a virus-carrying mosquito, symptoms only appear after an incubation period of three to 15 days (five to eight days is typical). Dengue fever’s most common symptoms include: • Sudden chills and pain around the eyes • Fever up to 104° F /40° C • Headaches, muscle pain and neck pain • Unexplained lethargy, loss of appetite • Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea; • Skin rash around the abdomen and upper torso High fever and other symptoms usually persist for two to four days before a rapid drop in temperature and profuse sweating. Next comes a temporary respite for about a day as body temperature returns to normal,

followed by a second round of fast-rising fever accompanied by a rash that spreads from the extremities until it covers the full body except the face. Some patients experience swelling and redness on the palms and soles of the feet.

Treating dengue: There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but it’s important to see your doctor if you develop dengue-like symptoms. In mild cases, doctors usually recommend fluids to prevent dehydration, plenty of rest, and Tylenol or acetaminophen for pain and fever. In severe cases requiring hospitalization, patients are usually given intravenous (IV) fluid and electrolyte replacement, blood pressure is monitored, and some patients may require blood transfusions. Fewer than one percent of dengue cases are fatal. The fever and muscle pain during the acute phase of the illness last for up to two weeks. Full recovery may take several weeks. Prevention tips: Since the virus is transmitted mosquito-to-human, prevention entails both controlling and eradicating mosquitoes and protecting oneself from being bitten. It’s important to empty standing water from places mosquitoes breed such as discarded old tires, trash cans and flower pots.

Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok is home to over 1,300 doctors and surgeons providing quality in-patient and out-patient care in state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and intensive care facilities. Founded in 1980, Bumrungrad today serves over 1.1 million patients each year, including 520,000 international patients, who have access to comprehensive support in more than 20 languages. Along with its internationallycertified lab and pharmacy, advanced imaging, and 24-hour emergency care, Bumrungrad has 55 specialty centers — including the New Life Healthy Aging Clinic, a dedicated geriatric clinic supported by specialists in heart and cancer care, bone and digestive health, and neurology and ophthalmology.

Wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts helps guard against mosquito bites, and consider using a mosquito repellent containing DEET when visiting places where dengue is endemic. Avoid areas with standing water and stay indoors in the morning until two hours after sunrise and at sunset to further reduce your risk of being bitten.
