Five DYI Projects You Need to Try
By S. Elfman
Home Improvement Special Issue
Through taking on a home project, you can learn new skills and experience how good it feels to create something with your own two hands.
Hotspots spoke with former painter and current Interior Designer David Mayer of Decorative David Designs about tips on DIY projects for beginners. With over 25 years of experience, the New York native –now Wilton Manors resident – was overflowing with tips.
Here are 5 DIY projects for everyone to try, from simple to intermediate:
The Doors
Skill level: Beginner
An easy DIY project is to upgrade your doorknobs.
Mayer said that most interior doors are thinner than exterior doors and it is important to measure door thickness and the center of the doorhole. He said you will need the specs of the new doorknob because it's not always a universal size.
“All you need is a screwdriver and patience,” Mayer said. “An electric screwdriver is the better way, but you can do it with a handheld one.” He also said that in some cases new door strikes don't line up to the existing hole in the casing. In

this case, just keep the existing one to make things easy. “You'll still have a whole new look, but it's simple. I would not rebuild the wheel.”
He also suggested not updating the door plate to keep things easy. Check YouTube for more detailed videos on how to perform this simple project.
Plant Your Seed
Skill level: Beginner
“A few flowers and plants can change the whole vibe of your property and bring a smile to your face every day,” Mayer said. He said he thinks it's best to start small, as small plants grow faster than you think and are easier to plant. He suggested that you do your research – see which plants you
Remember to follow the instructions included with the plant. “If it says it will grow twice as wide — plant accordingly,” Mayer said.
Assembly Required
Skill level: Beginner
Mayer said a good project to try is to assemble a piece of furniture on your own.
like and either ask or read about their requirements, whether they need to be in the sun, need a certain amount of water, etc. “If you buy the right plant for your environment, it will thrive,” Mayer said. “If not, it will die. That is two-thirds of what it takes to make a beautiful garden.” He also said it is important to dig your hole a little deeper than the size of the plant requires. Always add fresh soil with nutrients and use your garden hose to water the hole. “That is one of the tricks to getting the new plant to catch and grow,” he said. “The other thing is – this is very important for the first few days – water, water, water. Wait and find out how fast your plant will grow.”
“You can save a lot of money,” he said. “And there's a lot of pride in saying 'I Did it.'”
If you hate reading instructions, look the item up online and there's almost always a how-to video to follow. “If you can buy it, there's going to be a video on it online,” Mayer said,
He said when unpacking your furniture, lay all of the parts out and learn their proper names as you can't guess what the parts are.
“Follow the directions and it's easy to go right,” Mayer said. “Don't skip steps –there's a reason for them and it's important.”
A Fresh Coat of Paint
Skill level: Intermediate
“Painting is the easiest way to refresh your home,” Mayer said. “Whether it's a walkway or the whole house – it's easier to do than you think.”
Mayer said to get samples beforehand. A lot of companies offer self-stick samples, which give you a good preview of the colors you are choosing from. He also advocated for not going the frugal route.
HotspotsMagazine.com | 27
Photo: Lara Jameson
“Don't buy the cheapest paint,” he said. “You don't have to buy the best but get something in the middle. The cheapest is hard to work with and won't cover.”
Mayer also said that he likes to buy disposable accessories for painting. “Cleaning up is half the mess of painting,” he said.
He has had the best luck with using a thin paintbrush and said a two-inch chip brush is easier to work with. This will also help you get a better finished line. “You don't need a big fancy brush,” he said. “They are hard to work with.”
Mayer likes to use roller handles with a cover. He said rollers snap into them and it's a good way to avoid paint splatter. These are hard to find in stores but can be found online. “You won't make a mess,” he explained.
He always buys a good quality, thick roller pad, which costs $6 to $7. “They tend to flatten up when you use it,” he said. “You want a thicker pad – ½ inch.”
He also said not to go crazy with a ton of paint during the first coat with the idea that you will only need one coat. “It will run and have an uneven finish,” he said. “Always do a second coat.”
Paper that Wall
Skill level: Intermediate
“Wallpapering an accent wall is very trendy,” Mayer said. The first thing to do is to order a sample to see the paper in person before committing to covering your
space with it.
Mayer said, when you do decide to order a roll, it is good to order extra because when you are cutting the paper, it could be sloppy.
In addition, Mayer said that a lot of people paste the paper and then hang it on the wall, however, it's better to add paste directly to the wall with a big brush. Then wet the back of the wallpaper with a very wet washcloth before putting it up. “This is easier and when it dries, it will tighten up,” Mayer explained. “You will get a better finished project.
Mayer also suggested that the best tool to use is the plastic spatula found in the paint department of home improvement stores. When paper is laid down, push it down with a spatula in a side to side motion and use a wet washcloth. This will get the bubbles out.
Mayer said wallpapering gets easier the more you do it. He also said that when using a pattern, it's important to be patient. “Patience is everything with wallpapering,” he said.
He suggested that beginners start with textured paper instead of patterned. “Textured – or embossed– paper is very beautiful.” “It doesn't show imperfections and it's easy to line up.”

Add Value to Your Home With Fresh Upgrades
By S. Elfman
Home Improvement Special Issue
Spring is a time for renewal. There's a reason people feel the need to do spring cleaning, redecorate and generally get a fresh start.
While cleaning out closets and bagging things up to donate, toss or sell, it will be hard not to notice things around your house that could use a little zhuzhing up.
There are several ways to give your habitat the glow-up it deserves, while also adding value to it.
And a note of warning—although it is tempting to personalize your home with the latest trendy flooring, bold wallpaper, bright or very dark colors – these things can decrease your casa's worth.
In addition, you'll want to avoid
34 | HotspotsMagazine.com
By Jimmy Nilss on Masth
combining rooms, doing big renovations yourself and risking sloppy work and getting built-in electronics that would need to be upgraded often.
Here are some ideas for sprucing up your abode, while not decreasing its worth.
Revamp your kitchen
A good way to add worth to your kitchen is to upgrade cabinets and countertops. Although it is tempting to dive into the latest trend, the keywords here are classic and durable.
Raise the roof
Not only will getting a new roof add longevity and safety to your home, but it will also add value. How do you know you need to reno that roof? Things to look for are damaged shingles, leaky spots on your ceiling and – a guaranteed way to know if it's time – check the year of the last replacement on your home improvement records.
Make an impact. . .with new windows
Update your old windows with new, fresh impact windows and doors. This could be one of your most important upgrades along with your roof. The weather in Florida is no joke and putting up and taking down hurricane shutters every time there is a whiff of a warning is exhausting and bad for your back and mindset. Sturdy windows
and doors never go out of fashion.
Get a paint job
When was the last time you had your house painted? How are those doors looking? In many ways this is your home's first impression. Freshen up the look of your home by changing its exterior color. Perhaps you are ready to ditch the cool gray tones of your domicile and switch up to warm, creamy neutrals. Or vice versa.
Trim your bushes
Keeping your yard tidy is important. Lawns should be shorn and clean looking. Bushes and shrubs should be trimmed and neat. Consider planting a tree – fruit trees especially are known to add value to a dwelling.
Floor it
Refurbish your floor for an instant new look. Waterproof and laminate flooring add value, but surfaces that resemble wood flooring can add the most value. As we live in the Sunshine State, it is important to choose materials that can handle humidity and heat.
It could be tempting to do all these things in your home but remember less is sometimes more. Even one of these updates freshens things up and keeps your home looking good in case you decide to put it on the market.

'The L Word' is dead. Long live 'The L Word'
None of Showtime's TV series have been renewed yet since the announcement that all of the network's content is getting folded into Paramount+, and that spells the end of “The L Word: Generation Q,” which has been cancelled after three seasons. suggests a full reboot with all new characters in a new city. After all, lesbians are paying extremely high rents everywhere, so why not find out which glammy ones are competing with Sarah Jessica Parker for extremely expensive shoes and pigeon-shaped clutch purses in Manhattan? Stay tuned for more about this one, as it's still in the earliest stages of development.
Luke Macfarlane joins Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne for 'Platonic'
We were hoping to see Luke Macfarlane move on from “Bros” to more comedy — he was, quite frankly, underappreciated in that film — and now it's happening. He's joined the cast of the upcoming sitcom “Platonic,” which stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. It's been a long time coming for this one — it got a series order in October
up with new shows an impossible task, only to have corporate entities come along and destroy what they created. But diehard “L Word” fans are allowed to hope for more anyway, as Ilene Chaiken is developing a full reboot of the series, with the working title “The L Word: New York.” What little information there is

Macfarlane joins the supporting cast that includes Tre Hale (“Love and Monsters”), Carla Gallo (“Bones”), and Andrew Lopez (“Blockers”). The 10-episode season drops on Apple TV+ May 24, so summer comedy television is already shaping up.

It's the kind of aural experience that's going to be best experienced in an immersive theatrical setting — think the 2022 Tilda Swinton-starring arthouse sensation “Memoria” from queer filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, but in a somewhat less trippy package. This is one for the art-queers, who always deserve a little treat but never find it at the multiplex. It opens April 28 in New York, with more cities to follow.
Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist are bringing 'Brokeback' back A new version of Annie Proulx's short story, “Brokeback Mountain,” is coming to London's West End, and it will star BAFTA-nominated Mike Faist (he was Riff in Spielberg's “West Side Story”) and Academy Award-nominated Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”). And it's something of a musical, or, as it's being called, “a play with music,” which

Adapted by Ashley Robinson, with songs by gay songwriter and lead vocalist of the band The Feeling, Dan Gillespie Sells, who composed the music for “Everybody's Talking About Jamie,” the Jonathan Butterell-directed production (he directed the film version of “Jamie”) will take the stage at Sohoplace Theatre for a 12-week run beginning May 10. We're very pleased to see Lucas Hedges return to more queer material after his moving performance in “Boy Erased,” and hopeful that this new staging makes its way back to the United States.
Romeo San Vicente can't quit you.

Recipes
By Andreus Quinones
Cod filets (at least 1.5 to 2 inches thick)
½ stick of unsalted butter
½ lemon
Kosher salt (to taste)
Cracked black pepper (to taste)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon of dried dill
Extra Virgin Olive oil
For the rice (best if done in a rice cooker)
Mahatma basmati rice
1 chicken bouillon cube
½ teaspoon of salt
½ teaspoon of onion powder
1 packet of Sazon con Achiote
Baked Cod & Seasoned Rice
Preheat the oven to 400° F. Take your cod filets, fresh or thawed, and pat them dry. Coat them on both sides lightly with the extra virgin olive oil. Place into a Pyrex or other non-stick baking dish. Squeeze the lemon over the filets, then sprinkle the salt, pepper, oregano, and dill over the fish. Cut up the butter and place a few pats on top of the fish and around it.
Follow the directions for the rice, but add all of the ingredients to the rice, stirring before you start the rice cooker. Once you start the rice cooker, then place the fish in the oven. The fish and rice should finish about the same time. This meal goes great with sweet plantains, or sweet potatoes, and even broccoli. Enjoy!!

Stepping into the role of 'Otis Williams' will be original First National Tour cast member, Michael Andreaus, and joining the tour from the Original Broadway Company is E. Clayton Cornelious as 'Paul Williams.' They join the current Classic Temptations Jalen Harris as 'Eddie Kendricks,' Harrell Holmes Jr. as 'Melvin Franklin,' and Elijah Ahmad Lewis as 'David Ruffin'.
The tour also welcomes new cast members, Reggie Bromell, Felander, Melvin Gray Jr., Quiana Onrae'l Holmes, Ryan M. Hunt, Jeremy Kelsey, AJ Lockhart, Omar Madden, Dwayne P. Mitchell, Devin Price, Brittny Smith, Amber Mariah Talley and Nazarria

Workman, who will be performing with current tour cast members Brian C. Binion, Shayla Brielle G., Devin Holloway and Andrew Volzer.
Featuring the Grammy Award-winning songs and Tony Award-winning moves, Ain't Too Proud is the electrifying new musical that follows The Temptations' extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With their signature dance moves and unmistakable harmonies, they rose to the top of the charts creating an amazing 42 Top Ten Hits with 14 reaching number one and being voted the greatest R&B group of all time by Billboard Magazine in 2017. The rest is history — how they met, the groundbreaking heights they hit and how personal and political conflicts threatened to tear the group apart as the United States fell into civil unrest. This thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal is set to the beat of the group's treasured hits, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” “Papa Was a Rollin' Stone” and so many more.
Nominated for 12 Tony Awards and the winner of the 2019 Tony Award for Best Choreography, Ain't Too Proud tells the thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal, as the group's personal and political conflicts threatened to tear them apart during a decade of civil unrest in America.
It was a pleasure to sit down with E. Clayton Cornelious who plays Paul Williams for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
At what age did you begin performing?
I started performing in the 4th grade. I had always wanted to perform, as I learned to play 5 instruments.
What was your first paid gig?
I guess it was at a theme park. I am from Pittsburgh, and I performed at Kennywood. The first year I worked there I worked the gate and the next year I was in the show. When did you know performing would be your career?
I performed all through High School doing musicals and plays, and I remember I did the show “Company,” and I played the role of Bobbie. My father came to see it and he said to me “You are really good, and you should do comedy.” That was the first time I thought I could do this. After that I chose to go into a theater program for college. Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?
My favorite role was the Caterpillar in “Wonderland.” It was my first leading role, and I was very nervous.
What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but would die to)?
Its funny, I really don't think I have a fantasy role, but I do think I would really want to play the baker one day in “Into The Woods.” Is there extra pressure in this role playing
HotspotsMagazine.com | 89
E. Clayton Cornelious
someone famous and from such an iconic group?
There might be a little bit of extra pressure because Otis is still alive, and I was part of the original Broadway show and helped create the show. You really have the pressure of getting it right for Otis because he lived this legacy. I always got a little more nervous when he was in the audience, but the truth is he is so supportive of this show. I have been with this show for 7 years and I am having the greatest time of my life.
Is it hard being on the road all the time?
Yes, it's hard. Its great to go to different cities and see different cultures, but its hard to be away from your home all the time.
How well do you and your castmates get along?
The reason why I stayed 7 years with this show is because of the family unit we have and continue to have even with the new actors.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Funny, committed, and smart
What do you do for fun?
Rest, as I am the oldest member of this company. I do love to Netflix and chill when I have time off. I also am a big foodie. What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Ain't Too Proud – The Life And Times Of The Temptations”?
It's a good time. You will also hear a
wonderful Motown catalogue that everyone is going to enjoy. We are going to give you 2 ½ hours of songs, dancing and a story and most people don't know the whole story. It's really a great night of theatre.

96 | HotspotsMagazine.com
It was a pleasure to sit down with Giovanna Bullen, the Operations Director of Physical Therapy Group of Florida for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
How does someone know if they need one of your services?
We treat people who are either in chronic pain or people who need physical therapy post-surgery. A lot of replacement surgeries have mandatory physical therapy afterwards. We also treat people who have had a stroke.
What is your goal in your practice?
To help as many people as possible to get rid of pain without medication or surgery. Many people think there is no hope, but we can help a lot of the people. Explain to us what's unique about Physical Therapy Group of Florida?
We are a small practice and that means you get one-on-one time with a licensed physical therapist. We only see two patients at a time, so each patient has plenty of time with the doctor. We are a family-owned (Anthony Bullen, MSPT, is the Founder and my husband), and operated clinic and we know that patients feel much better when they have quality time with the therapists. How quickly can someone get an appointment?
Within 48 hours we can schedule an appointment for the patient. What are some of the biggest questions you get from new clients and how do you alleviate their concerns?
The biggest questions are how long it is going to take to get rid of the pain and
how much experience we have with the issue they are suffering from. They also ask what happens after physical therapy and how to make sure they don't have that issue again.
What is the success rate of your treatments? Everybody gets better with physical therapy, but not everybody gets to 100% better. However, we find 80% of people get better and can avoid surgery. For the 20%, we then recommend surgery. The surgery success rate is only 50%, and that's why we recommend Physical therapy first. Physical therapy is also much cheaper.
What if you feel you can't help someone?
We work with several doctors in the area that we trust, and we would send the patient to one of those doctors for a consultation.
Do you take insurance?
Yes, we take all major insurances. If people don't have insurance, we have self-pay packages. We also have care credit which is a credit card with 0% interest.
What's the best comment you have ever heard from a patient?
We have over 300 google reviews that are positive, but the best ones are the ones where people say, “You have changed my life.” We also like the ones that say we are a family.
Physical Therapy Group is located at 2430 East Commercial Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308, and they are open Mon and Wed from 8am to 7pm, Tues and Thurs from 8am to 3:30pm, Friday from 8am to 5pm and Saturdays, are by appointment only from 9am to 1pm. Queen Charlotte Drops on Netflix on May 4th
Shonda Rhimes Does It Again!
By Scott Holland
Photos Courtesy of Netflix
Like myself, millions of viewers around the world became fans of “Bridgerton” when season 1 dropped in December of 2020. I couldn't get enough of binge watching this show. After watching it two times I wanted more and couldn't wait for the second season to drop. A few months later we were told that one of the lead characters, Simon Bassett, the Duke of Hastings, would not be back in season 2. Daphne and the Duke's love affair was what the entire first season was about, so I was concerned if I would adore the second season as much as I did the first. What I didn't realize is how much power the supporting cast had, and how much I grew to love them. The second season focused on Daphne's sexy brother, Anthony, and his search for a wife. That season was equally as good and steamy as the first season.
A few weeks ago, I heard that Shondaland was releasing a prequel entitled “Queen Charlotte,” and I emailed my friends at Netflix to see if I could get a

media preview, and I am so happy I did.
“Queen Charlotte” mostly tells the story of how the young Queen's marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift. It does go back and forth between current Bridgerton times with such an ease that only Shonda Rhimes can do.
Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury), Ruth Gemmell (Lady Violet Bridgerton), and Hugh Sachs (Brimsley) reprise their roles from Bridgerton in this series.
The new casts consist of India Amarteifio (Young Queen Charlotte), Michelle Fairley (Princess Augusta), Corey Mylchreest (Young King George), Arsema Thomas (Young Agatha Danbury), Sam Clemmett (Young Brimsley), Freddie Dennis (Reynolds), Richard Cunningham (Lord Bute), Tunji Kasim (Adolphus), Rob Maloney (the Royal Doctor), and Cyril Nri (Lord Danbury).
Keep an eye out for some of the young actors in this series including India, Corey and Arsema as I predict great things from them as they capture you on screen.
I urge you to watch “Queen Charlotte,” which is only 6 episodes and drops on May 4.
One more thing: I love me some Shonda Rhimes!!!

By Andreus
Dear Andreus,
I have been dating someone for 3 months now. We really get along well, and I like him a lot. The issue is that he always wants to go out, either to the bars or to restaurants. I am a bit more of a homebody, but that is not the real issue. The issue is that along with his suggestion to go out, I always end up paying. Every time the bill comes, he is always like – “Can you get that baby?”. I am starting to feel like he is taking advantage of my kindness, but I also don't want to assume. I don't know what to do.
Sincerely,
Gerald P.
Dear Gerald,
It is so important to set boundaries early. The moment that your boyfriend or partner's behavior makes you uncomfortable in any way, you should talk about it. It is okay to express how you feel about something, and you can certainly do it without implying that his behavior is intentional. It could be intentional, or it could be that you have made him comfortable enough to feel as if you paying is the norm. Here again, it is important to establish boundaries early on. I would talk about it, and maybe agree on taking turns paying when you go out or splitting the bill – except when someone volunteers to pay. Always ask, before you assume, and certainly before you accuse.
Dear Andreus,
My boyfriend is always on his phone. No matter where we go, or what we are doing – he cannot disconnect from his phone. Even when we have date night, he is constantly checking his phone, or texting his friends. I find this disrespectful. I
feel like if you are spending time with me, then I should be the focus, and have your undivided attention. He says that I do have his attention because he is with me. But I don't agree. Am I wrong for wanting him to be more present?
Sincerely,
Frankie M.
Dear Frankie,
Believe me, this is not just a problem for you. With dating and socializing taking media platforms, it has made real-life interactions almost foreign. Social skills are a dying art, and people rely on their phones now for everything. That does not, however, excuse the behavior. I must agree with you because I get annoyed by the same thing. I tell my friends and my significant other – If you are on your phone constantly when we are together, that means I am boring. If you are going to spend all of your time with me on your phone, then just call or text me. Maybe that would work as a pitch to shed some light on how you feel. Either way, if this is a relationship that you expect to last, talk it out and come to some type of happy medium that works for you both. Good luck!
